Fifteen Days/Songs of Christmas Music Mixtape Draft - Links to final mixes in post #1 (2 Viewers)

I aim for cultural significance.  I just like how seemingly every rap song from that time used the same hook from Chic.
IIRC Chic released a club mix of Good Times with an extended instrumental part that discos loved to put on for dance-offs and Soul Train Lines.  Old school rappers could put that break on and freestyle over it without needing to edit, loop, or scratch it.  And it's catchy as heck and makes you want to dance.

I'm hyper aware that I owe many, many picks for this draft. And I vow to get to them soon-ish. My apologies, it's been a crazy week.

That said, because I know you're all waiting to pounce on it like the sleeper that it is, I hereby select:

4.11. Taking Back Christmas, Shag & Adam, Novelty Song

For my first Wild Card song, I will take a local favorite. I am curious to know if this track is played anywhere else in America at Christmas time:

13.09: "All I Want For Christmas is You" - Vince Vance & the Valiants

Not the same song as the Mariah Carey song of the same title. This one came out in 1989.

I saw Bonnie Raitt drafted earlier ... anyone appreciating bluesy female vocals will enjoy this one, I think.

Time to catch-up with some fun swingin and gin drinkin Christmas tunes.

Round 11

"Well he lives up in a mountain like a hermit in a cave, never got a haircut, never too a shave."

Mabel Scott. Boogie Woogie Santa Claus. Novelty.

Round 12

"Bring your coats and hats you lukewarm cats, I've got my horn to keep me warm."

Glenn Miller and His Orchestra. Jingle Bells.

Must be the title of the most l different Christmas songs as Carla Thomas's "All I Want For Christmas is You" is distinct from both.

This one gets played at our house

Round 13

I've been pretty good about getting rock songs into my pre-rock era and non-rock songs into my rock era, so I will continue the trend.

John Williams. Somewhere In My Memory. Rock Era.

I think this song hasn't been taken at all yet and we need to get it in the mix here for folks like me who may just be lazy and hit shuffle on the playlist for the week of Christmas (plus I need to fill this category).

13.2 - "Carol of the Bells" - The Bird and The Bee - Pop Standard (1900-1963)

We should bring back Wassail.  Go sing some carols, get a warming libation, maybe some coin for the old purse.  I think I'd dig the 19th century.

Under the Lamppost -  Here We Come a-Wassailing  -- Non-mandatory Carol

I've got Louis.  I've got Ella.  I need them together.  This is my favorite song off of their Christmas Album and my second favorite "Christmas" song (well, winter song) from the two of them combined (after Cool Yule).

Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald -- I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm -- Wildcard

Complete Playlist is available here:

EDIT: I have no idea how to edit the order in the Spotify web player.

Here's my linkage. I tacked on some extra crap that didn't make the cut.  I'll push a zip file of 15-20 mp3's on everybody in the next couple days.. if you like bad music as much as I do you should definitely check it out

@simey the song we talked about.. can't find that #### anywhere, short of overpaying for the CD*!  RIP bittorrent :sadbanana:

*so I did.. stay tuned

Need more Canadian indie/folky Christmas songs on the mix, I guess :oldunsure:  this song is actually really good. There is no video of it on Youtube other than this one that some dude made with just random videos from his own life but it is on Spotify.

14.12 - "Hang a String of Lights" - Great Lake Swimmers (wildcard)

:o   I hope you like the cd. I should have sent you the song zipped up in mediafire. I totally forgot about that site until I got a notice from them last night saying they were going to delete my account due to inactivity unless I signed in.
Not a big deal, it will be a good folder to have on hand!  I'll zip that whole thing up and share it here too.

My mix has Hathaway, Stevie, Eddie Kendricks... may as well stay in this lane...

Round 14.xx "Silent Night" by Al Green

Like the gospel take on it.

I know I have one more pick left.  Trying to figure out if I'm going to fill my open category, or slide over a previous pick and backfill.

Mix requirements

Core versions of most covered 25 songs randomly selected from fivethirtyeight.com's list of the 25 most covered songs
(2) picks from the following traditional carols:  Away in a Manger, Silent Night, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Jingle Bells
(2) picks from the following pop standards:  White Christmas, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

Other songs from the traditional and standards category (excluding the 6 7 mandatory songs)
(1) traditional/religious carols (written before 1900)
(1) pop standards (written between 1900 and 1963)

(3) Rock-era originals (written in 1964 or later)

Miscellaneous categories (relatively open to your interpretation except the 6 7 mandatory songs are verboten except for Jzilla's Jingle Bells)

(1) Instrumental - any song, any era

(2) Wild card songs - any song, any era and including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter, December, New Year's etc.

(1) Sad/depressing/wistful/anti Christmas song

(1) Child's Christmas - A song by, for or about kids.

(1) Novelty song - JZilla's pick of the Barking Dogs version of "Jingle Bells" is grandfathered in.
Is it too late or too early to join and throw a mix out there?

i have some songs in mind that are undrafted....

Going to move 12 Days of Christmas to Children's to make room for a pre-1900 to finish my draft.

Round 15.xx "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" by Take 6

Gospel a cappella at its finest.  Their albums are great, but wow hearing them live is something special.

Had a blast drafting.  If anyone wants to take a moment to explain how to make a publicly-available playlist on Spotify (asking for a friend), one of you could probably explain it better than I could (for my friend).

Looking forward to hearing everyone's mixes.

Happy Holidays.

Happy Holidays, Bruce!  On Spotify, your friend can right click their Holiday playlist and you they will see a menu, and then left click "copy playlist link." Then they can paste it in the link section on FBG.

I always listen to a Charlie Brown Christmas during the holidays. I enjoy jazz piano in general.
I have a Snoopy downstairs that has reindeer ears and moves and grooves to jazz piano.

It was 14.99 at CVS.

Mer--ry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, rock! Snoopy (and Woodstock) have always been cool. Does Snoopy move and groove to a certain song (perhaps "Linus and Lucy") or is it random?

:D

It's totally Linus and Lucy. Great call. It does not have the breakdown at about 1:10 in; though, and certainly misses the 2:00 mark, so that's sad. But it's happy!

Merry Christmas, simey!

Hallmark sells a set of Peanuts band figures with Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, and Schroeder each on a different instrument.  Press the button on one and it starts playing, then the other figures "hear" the song and pick it up in time on beat.  Plays a total of 10 songs.  Early versions were just music, more recent ones also have light shows in sync with the music.

I just checked the video of Linus and Lucy. If Snoopy is on guitar, that must be so cool. I'll have to look for it, Bruce. (FBF? Notebook.)

Also, simey, Woodstock and Snoopy are my favorite characters in Peanuts. Johnathan Franzen and the old school Peanuts fans would not agree with me, most likely, but I love them so, especially playing hockey on the bird pond.

Time to wrap this up. It's been fun and I'm sure the mix will be playing in many of our homes over the coming weeks. I look forward to it the gift that will keep on giving for weeks and years to come.

Round 14

Dexter Gordon. The Christmas Song. Instrumental.

Round 15

J.S. Bach. Unser Mund sei voll Lachens. Traditional before 1900.
Dexter Gordon taught my class at a fancy-schmancyoung art school, IIRC. Dex is mentioned here? Jazz trumpet.

Like this?

ETA: guess so.

Couldn't find the Zooey/Redbone version of Baby It's Cold Outside on Spotify, so I subbed in a version by Jeffrey Osborne and Chaka Khan.

Sorry about ditching on the draft this week.  I had an unusually hectic business trip.  I'm glad to be back in SF and can finally wrap up my picks.

14.xx  Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer - Billy May and His Orchestra

Christmas time is Mambo time!!!

It's somewhat amazing that I went this entire draft without saying how much I hated Nelson Riddle arrangements and LOVED Billy May arrangements for Sinatra or Nat King Cole.

I owe one still that I will make then update the playlist. But maybe not today.

In the meantime, someone should have taken the songs by The Eels, Low and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Sinatra's Xmas album (the 1957 one, the only one that matters) was arranged by Gordon Jenkins.  May swings harder than Riddle or Jenkins but the latter duo's gifts for string arrangements really suit Sinatra's ballads.

I chose the High Strung over the Low song for my last pick because I thought I needed something more upbeat.

Gotten my arsze whipped at work yesterday and today ... but I can finish up now.

OK, to close out the Mandatory Pop Standards -- from A Very Special Christmas 2. Someone's ears must've been burning with the Sinatra talk, 'cause I've had this at the ready all week:

14.05: "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" - Frank Sinatra & Cindi Lauper

Sinatra still in fine form in 1992 on this track. Lauper contributes a lot of whimsy to the song without getting in Frank's way.

Last pick, to close out Wildcards.

Wasn't sure this one was still out there, but I think it was the Eagles version that was taken earlier (?). Charles Brown has been tabbed at least once, but still this iconic titan of a record is still standing out there. We'd be remiss to collectively leave this recording out of this draft. Was going to take a local-favorite novelty song to close out, but any legit Xmas song draft needs this in it:

15:09: "Please Come Home for Christmas" - Charles Brown

Not a bad selection for my desert island ice floe at Xmas time, if I do say so myself:

1.09: "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)" - Savatage
2.05: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" - Mannheim Steamroller
3.09: "I Believe in Father Christmas" - Greg Lake
4.05: "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" - Nat 'King' Cole
5.09: "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" - Burl Ives
6.05: "Do They Know It's Christmas?" - Band Aid
7.09: "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht" - Nana Mouskouri
8.05: "Frosty The Snowman" - Jimmy Durante
9.09: "Same Auld Lang Syne" - Dan Fogelberg
10.05: "Back Door Santa" - Clarence Carter
11.09: "Christmastime for the Jews" - Darlene Love
12.05: "O Tannenbaum" - Nat 'King' Cole
13.09: "All I Want For Christmas is You" - Vince Vance & the Valiants
14.05: "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" - Frank Sinatra & Cyndi Lauper
15:09: "Please Come Home for Christmas" - Charles Brown
