Trump definitely needs to make sure HRC is not wearing her Brue Brockers sunglasses and make sure Gennifer Flowers is wearing the brightest, reddest dress ever. In fact, the Donald should eschew a regular dark suit for an all red one.

 
Economy, that is this debate should focus on.  When Barack Obama entered the White House, the U.S. government was 10.6 trillion dollars in debt.  Today, the U.S. government is 19.5 trillion in debt, and Obama still has several months to go until the end of his second term.  That means that an average of more than 1.1 trillion dollars a year has been added to the national debt during his presidency.  We are stealing a tremendous amount of consumption from the future to make the economy look much, much better than it otherwise would be, but we are systematically destroying the future in the process.  One thing though it should be entertaining.

Trump lies far more than any politician in recent history.  He received Politifact's lie of the year.  Normally they pick one false statement as their lie of the year, but since the best choices were all Trump's anyway, they just made HIM the lie of the year.  And his record is the same with every independent fact checker.  He lies FAR more than Hillary.  It's not even debatable.

So yeah, she'd be more than happy to have statements from both candidates fact checked by the moderator.  While she doesn't bat .1000 either, she can be careful and prepared enough to stick to the truth.  He can't help himself.  He has to lie.  He needs it like air.  And when he doesn't know (which is often), he just makes something up. 

I would think it would be very difficult for a moderator to fact check on the fly, but if he can that's a huge win for Hillary.

I'll be surprised if he wins tonight.  It can happen, but a one v. one debate makes it harder for Trump's schtick to be effective.  For him to win, he has to maintain his alpha-dog image.  Clinton will be well drilled, and anticipating certain things from Trump - so I expect she has responses/zingers ready.  Trump needs to keep her off-guard - zig when she expects a zag.  He would do well to adopt a counter-puncher's mentality here - invite Clinton to throw the first shot, then hit her with something else.  But, like I said, if hits her with obvious stuff, she'll hit back harder.

If I were Trump, I would go after her on policy - particularly foreign policy.  Say she is terrible, making America more dangerous, and helped create ISIS, and when she denies it, hit her again.  Stay away from health, emails, etc.  Of course, I might also go for a low blow, but only in the opening statement or closing statement.  If you get her riled up in the opening, she may go off script, and if you hit her in the closing statement, she really won't be able to respond.

 
I Maintain Sinn Fein regardless of who he votes for/against understand the political field as well as almost anyone on these boards. I don't say this lightly but he inspired me to be more active. Good stuff

 
I agree that she will be ready for the typical things Trump will say to/about her.  She'll have nifty comebacks at the ready.  He'll need to throw her off guard and try to get her to scream at him.  The louder her voice gets, the better for him, imo.   

My guess is he'll screw things up and get riled and she'll remain, mostly, in control of her demeanor.  I think people have desperately tried to prepare him but I don't think he listens.  He does his own thing and too often comes straight from the hip.  It'll be a big mistake, imo.  Hillary will be well prepared and already knows what he's going to say surrounding a lot of the issues.  He says the same things over and over and has since last year.  If he sticks to his typical responses, she'll nail him.  

 
Another random observation - about how different this campaign is from the past - people will be expecting Trump's facial contortions tonight, and it will get lots of camera time as he reacts to Clinton.  But, it will not be portrayed as the same negative or downside that nailed Gore.  Gore was nailed for his sighs and eye-rolls, which will pale in comparison to Trump.  Yet, nobody will think Trump loses because of those reactions.  (Oddly, if he controls those emotions, he may come across as more "presidential" which would help him sway some undecideds).

Debt matters if we are paying rates much higher than inflation.  Last year we paid $50 billion less in interest than we did when W was President due to low rates.

If we can reduce the deficit then the long-term concern over the debt is not a big one. 

The debt does limit our options of raising interest rates - higher interest rates mean more interest paid on the debt.  The inflexibility we have on rates due to the cost of raising them is the biggest problem I have with the debt.

What I find interesting is that Trump gets a free pass for his lies, while Hillary is vilified for being dishonest.  It's a really weird dynamic.

I think there's a small chance Trump comes out and is cordial and gentlemanly the whole debate. Clinton has been preparing for ahole Trump, and this could throw her for a loop.

Who am I kidding. This thing is gonna be over the top ridiculous. I can't wait.

What you should consider is Obama hasn't had a budget passed since his first year in office, with our government in a cycle of continuing resolutions.  Congress deserves at least equal blame for the deficit, and probably more.  Fact check from earlier this year:


 


Federal Debt, Deficits and Spending


Debt – The U.S. government’s debt owed to the public has more than doubled. It is now more than $13.6 trillion, an increase of 116 percent since Obama first took office.

And the debt also has grown dramatically even when measured as a percentage of the growing economy, from 52 percent of gross domestic product at the end of fiscal year 2009 to just under 74 percent at the end of fiscal 2015, according to the most recent estimate by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Spending – Federal spending, however, has increased much less. Total federal outlays in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 last year totaled just under $3.69 trillion, according to final U.S. Treasury figures. That’s just 4.8 percent above the total outlays for fiscal 2009, which was well underway when Obama took office.

To be sure, Obama was responsible for some of the FY 2009 spending, but as we’ve shown in detail elsewhere, his early spending initiatives added — at most — $203 billion to the fiscal year 2009 spending levels that were set before he took office. Even attributing that extra FY 2009 spending to Obama brings the total increase in outlays since he took office to 11.3 percent over the level he inherited.

Massive federal deficits continue: The final figure for FY 2015 was $438.9 billion. That was about $44.5 billion less than the shortfall in fiscal year 2014, but CBO projects that without further spending cuts or revenue increases, deficits will soon be growing larger again, and will top $1 trillion in FY 2025.

Total debt, counting money the government owes to itself, currently stands at nearly $18.9 trillion, up nearly 78 percent under Obama.

And the whole deficit argument is largely blown out of proportion anyway.  This is not like your personal finances, the U.S. has so much collateral it is never going to be in a position of defaulting.  Spending needs to be brought down even further than it has, but that isn't gonna happen building walls and fixing our "outdated military."

I know that lying is lying but what is really interesting is WHY each candidate lies and what they lie about.  

When people lie, they do it for a number of reasons.

Is anyone here honest enough with themselves to point out exactly WHY each of these candidates lie?

I can tell you now that, other than being elected POTUS, they do not lie for the same reason.

Considering the timeslot, they should really use the Bachelor/Bachelorette format. Hot tub setting, the odd embarrassing disclosure, bully posturing, slutty indiscretion, anger-cry. Putin gives a rose to the winner.

 
I think Hillary is going to have a few key moments where she can drop the hammer on Trump and she's gonna swing and miss or not try at all.  If Trump stays on the rails, which is probably asking a lot, he should be ok tonight.  This isn't gonna be like those GOP three-ringed circus debates however, and Trump could struggle if he has to go off script.  His ego and hubris could be his enemy if so. 

 
Part of me doesn't want to watch because it is like looking at a car accident You know you shouldn't stare at the mangled wreck, but you just can't help yourself.

The one ace in the hole Clinton has is if Trump goes after her too hard, she can count on the MSM raising the issue that Trump is disrespectful to women. We already saw them come to her defense when Bernie made his "Excuse Me!!!" comment.

I think this is a really important point. In those debates, Trump could hide/fade into the back for long stretches. Here, his complete lack of knowledge of the issues could hurt him. Because he can't hide. At least I hope it does.

 
My feeling is if Trump has not prepared at all for this debate he'll begin to repeat himself about half way through on the same points and begin to look bad and sound like a broken record. In the GOP debates he had to be the focus for only about half of the time allotted(with commercials) and he had a number of targets to make it look different. He will look lost in the last half hour without that crutch and without a teleprompter his closing argument will surely be a rambling affair.

I can imagine a question during the America's direction portion where race relations are discussed - so I did not know if this broadly defined or narrowly.  I answered if its narrowly defined, I would take the under.  Racism/Racist are terms that are not generally used in polite society - instead the racism is inferred.  Clinton will not call Trump, or his supporters racists during the debate - but she will imply it.
