For what it's worth... Chris Leak signed with the Bears (1 Viewer)

I still say Orton is their best option. Dude was run out of the lineup while posting similar numbers to Grossman.
:goodposting:
:lmao: Orton had an abysmal 5.1 YPA and only threw 9 TD's vs. 13 picks in 15 games during 2005.

Grossman has a career YPA of 6.7 and has more TD's than INT's in his career.

Its quite a stretch to say Orton is the best option in Chicago based upon his performance.
I'm certainly no particular fan of his, but you're comparing Orton's rookie season, without a WR of the caliber of Muhammed, to Grossman's fourth season, and third in the same offense? Doesn't that seem like a bit of a reach to you?
You're right, but because Grossman's sample size is so small for his first three seasons (3 games max), its difficult to draw on any other info. FWIW, Grossman's worst YPA is 6.1 from his rookie year, and Orton's was far worse. It's a difficult comparison to make based on numbers, with better WR's and experience definitely giving Grossman an advantage, but the coaches selected Rex as their guy based upon watching both play on a daily basis, and their professional lives depend on him. I am not a fan of Rex at all, but he did enough to earn the #1 seed and win the NFCC game in his first full season as a starter. Orton is not the answer, and the Bears front office knows this.
Um guys - Moose was there when Orton was playing. In fact, the WR corps is identical except for Bradley. And Grossman got hurt in the first preseason game his 2nd year, I believe the 3rd game of his rookie year. When did he get all this gme experience? Seems Orton was ahead of him the 4th game in.

What I liked about Orton was that he was thrown into the fire as a rookie, and still held up and mostly avoided mistakes that prevented his teams' superior defense and special teams from winning the game for the Bears. That's about all you can expect from a guy drafted to be a developmental player anyway. To me, the jury's out on Orton still. As for Grossman, we know that he's both tantalizingly talented and also prone to feeling the pressure in game situations and making major mistakes.

Guys, IMO Grossmans problem was picking up the blitz last year. If you didn't notice he was getting creamed alot of the time by a free blitzer running in and crushing him. For a while the linemen were calling the shifts. Also a problem that Grossman had to deal with.

When you look at his poor games, you all are decribing the games when defenses were in place he couldn't read at that point - ergo he didn't know when/where the blitzer was coming. THAT led to some of his worst efforts last year. I gave him props for continuing to get up.

I am telling you that his ability to read a defense has changed.

You all will laugh at this but I think he has a legitimate chance at being a top 5 fantasy QB next year (depending on the Bears defense - it would need to be worse).

Name one superbowl QB who didn't come out the other side noticibly better. No one believed me last year when I said Rex would perform either. Next year this wont be so hard.

Orton? Do any Orton fans wach football? He's a mentally weak individual with a terribly innacurate arm. But yes, he can throw the ball 60 yards from his knees. Grossman puts him to shame, end of story. Lovie Smith will legitimize this viewpoint in due time. Orton would struggle as an AFL QB, in fact, he'll never be one.

The biggest problem you'll have with Chris Leak is that once he actually gets some playing time, all the fans will be clamoring for Lovie smith to put in Tim Tebow instead.

Maybe after this season we can bump this thread and see how Grossman is coming along.
Grossman has the potential to be special but of course may never make it like numerous other quarterbacks. This year will be a make or break year as regards to maturation in game management for Rex. He needs to make serious improvement in his decision making to progress into the QB the Bears need. However, Orton is merely a shell of an NFL quarterback. Ask any Bears fan what it was like to see Rex play at the end of 2005 after suffering through the incapable play of our other quarterbacks. The first 15+ yard pass on a string and on target was almost euphoric. Why? Because we lived through Orton, Hutchinson, Quinn, etc... and none even resembled a NFL QB. None of them could throw the ball beyond ten yards with any reliable accuracy. There is no reason to think that Orton should be the Bears QB.

How loosely are you defining the term "special?" I agree that he's better than Orton, but c'mon, he's shown nothing that makes me think he has the potential to be anything more than a competent starting QB.

Grossman has a problem with the slightest bit of in-game confidence leading him to make poor decisions. Great QBs do risky things either (a) when their team needs it to win or (b) once or twice a game to set up the defense. Other then that, they play within a very regimented game plan and strategy of execution.

Until Rex realizes the right time to do something overboard, I think he'll get the same results.

FWIW, I think Leak was a nice signing for the bears. He has a LOT to prove and like all UFAs, it will be an uphill battle. But he has some talent.

(By the way, where is Wood? IIRC we had a spirited discussion wherein I declared Ainge would be a contender for the #1 spot this past weekend and he was trumpeting Leak. We were both wrong, but I still think my guy will be a 1 st rounder next year)

A first time starter in their 3rd year isn't the same as a rookie starter. However, this is all moot as Orton is wayyyyy down the depth chart.
It is if you were hurt your first 2 years....it's not like he got any snaps with the injuries he had. His snaps have been limited due to injury.

True, but he's had LOTs of film time and sideline time. WHile it may not be as significant as some might think, there is a reason the Tony Romos, Matt Hasselbacks and Trent Green's of the NFL play well almost from the word go when they finally get their chance.

I will give you that but the speed of the game and actual preseason stuff can't be duplicated with just film room study. Im sure Orton at least saw the field in preseason the year he started unlike Rex. But Rex is just young and if they stick with him he should pan out. I remember the Chargers having a quick hook with Drew Brees and im sure the Bears don't want to make the same mistake. Rex has shown enough flashes that he can turn it around given time and confidence.

Honest question: Is Rex's confidence in tatters based on his late season play?
I don't think so...With them putting the shotgun in the offense and drafting another weapon for him he should be excited about the new season. The preseason will be key though...Hopefully the coaches can get it in his thick skull to check down instead of going for the home run every other play.

Don't. Anyone saying Orton deserves another chance in the NFL is beyond reasoning with. :goodposting:

I was never calling Orton the second coming of Unitas. I said I'd prefer him to Grossman. If you Bears fans want to have the ultimate faith in a guy who can make the occasional big play with as many bad ones in between, then that is on you.

As a Colts fan, I enjoyed seeing Rex load up and sling his deep rainbows trying to make the big play. It helped to get 2 of our DBs huge off-season contracts elsewhere.

I think until he learns to take the checkdown route he will continue to fail. Teams will learn to bait him into throwing the jump ball, much like the Colts did.

Be thankful you play in a weak division and conference.

Then you can say, "look, Rexy got us to the playoffs again."

He will be the single reason the Bears waste the terrific special teams and defensive play and never win the big one.

And anyone who is beyond a discussion about two flawed QBs is looking through rose colored glasses.

Lol, quite the comic we have here.15 starts: 1869yds, 9td/13int, 5.08ypa, 59.7 QB rating16 starts: 3193yds, 23td/20int, 6.65ypa, 73.9 QB ratingCan I trade you Anthony Thomas for Ladainian Tomlinson? By your absolutely insane definition, they put up "similar" numbers!

Honest question: Is Rex's confidence in tatters based on his late season play?
Personally, I don't think so.Last year he understood what he didn't know - he couldn't read the blitzing defensive player and it was getting him killed. You'd be gunshy too if you knew you didn't know where the next 240 lb guy was going to smash into you from. And when he got jumpy, his mechanics would take a nose dive. Hence his worst performances last year.I think he is improving, but we'll see how it actually pans out when the bullets start flying. Rex can make the throws ~ all of them. He just needs to get better at directing his O-Line and backfield blockers to keep himself from getting killed when he drops back. He also needs to understand when to audible to a run. You can't teach talent, but you can teach the mental aspects of the game.ETA: I think "motivated" would be the word to describe Rex right now. Everyone and their mother is ragging on the guy. Its a contract year. Its his first offseason not rehabbing since he entered the league. As long as he continues to do what he is supposedly doing, he will have a better year next year. Also, FWIW, I heard Mark Bradley is really practicing well also. "The light turned on" was the decription I got. But, we'll see.

Since this thread is way off, I'll keep it going. If having a great QB is the key to Super Bowl success I want to know what took the Colts so long to win it? That team has been STACKED for 8-9 years. I really can't think of a more underperforming big game team in NFL history.

Shhhh. Not so loud. While others will be drafting Moose and Berrian, I'll be waiting to take a flier on Bradley.

He's lost it. He wishes he could turn back but now he's past the point of no return. Orton all the way baby.

Reminds me of a less athletic Joe Hamilton with a better, more accurate arm.

I'm through doing this. I'm not gonna break down your posts any further. You're not a Bears fan and have no clue what you're talking about. It's hilarious how you think you know more about what's best for our team than the coaching staff and actual Bears fans. No Bears fans anywhere wants Orton in over Rex. And you're right. We're really wasting our defense and special teams. All the way to the best record in the NFC and the Super Bowl. What were we thinking? We could've won the damn thing if Orton was in there. Lucky for you. :lmao:

Both of those teams have better QBs right now as their starters than your team.Your team has a better Defense and ST than theirs. Your QB will win the same amount of Super Bowls this season as Joey Harrington, and David Carr. You need a QB who is not a liability. Which part of this is so funny to you?
I'm through doing this. I'm not gonna break down your posts any further. You're not a Bears fan and have no clue what you're talking about. It's hilarious how you think you know more about what's best for our team than the coaching staff and actual Bears fans. No Bears fans anywhere wants Orton in over Rex. And you're right. We're really wasting our defense and special teams. All the way to the best record in the NFC and the Super Bowl. What were we thinking? We could've won the damn thing if Orton was in there. Lucky for you. :lmao:
Consider this...Your beloved Bears won the same amount of Super Bowls last year as the Texans and Raiders. Both of those teams have better QBs right now as their starters than your team.Your team has a better Defense and ST than theirs. Your QB will win the same amount of Super Bowls this season as Joey Harrington, and David Carr. You need a QB who is not a liability. The sooner you open your eyes to this, the better off you'll be.I was merely trying to post my position with the OP. You blindly follow and support your QB. Enjoy mediocrity.
How does any of this support your claim that Orton is better than Grossman?
 All I was saying was that he was better than Orton. :loco:This thread took a bad turn. Sorry guys. I let it get away from me this time. :DETA: That Chris Leak. He sure is something. :D

One last time...

Grossman is the most talented QB on the Bears and has the potential to be a very good NFL player. He may never make it but even if he doesn't, he is better than Orton ever will be right now. If Orton started in the playoffs last year, the Bears are not in the game versus the Seahawks and don't see a Super Bowl. Grossman has a lot of work to do but as of right now, he is the best we got.

As for Leak, let him battle Orton for 3rd string and let the best man win. Leak has obvious shortcomings that must be overcome but if he can alleviate some of those concerns, he has a chance to stick.
