Game Thread W2 - Miami V Minnesota (1 Viewer)

I know it is fun to blame a loss like this on Favre, and I am not absolving him of anything - four turnovers is never good - but if Brad Childress had used his brain, the Vikings still would have won this game. Why go for it on 4th and 2 on that opening drive? Longwell can hit a 43-yarder. Hell, if they hit that FG, they could have kicked a winning FG on either of the last two drives. It was almost like Childress was too intent on them finishing drives with touchdowns every time, instead of taking the points when they were there, and look what happened: they lost by 4 points in a game in which your defense allowed 7 points. Childress is simply a horrible coach when it comes to game management.

Run the ball to the left Childress. You #######!
:P  :lmao:  They're crushing the Dolphins for 10 yards a pop to the left side and getting little to the right towards the end of that game, so when the game is on the line and you need a yard I'd definitely try to trick the defense and run behind the weaker side of your line. :wall: Goodness, Childress is a efffffin dunce. Seriously, he needs to be gone and gone soon. Favre saved Childress' job last year, but without any semblance of a WR to throw to this year he won't be so fortunate. Here comes the overpayment, likely in picks and salary, for Vincent Jackson.

This. Going for it on fourth and two in what would be a completely makeable FG? That was a dumb dumb dumb decision to begin the game.

Lovie Smith syndrome?

It's easy to say this in hindsight. However, there's plenty of stats to show that in that position, going for it is the better play (just google "going for it on 4th down"). When Bellichik does this, no one blinks an eye. There's plenty of things to criticize Childress about, but this particular decision is not one of them.

Uh, when Belichick did it, message boards across the internet exploded and melted down.

Just absolutely have to disagree with you here. Statistics be damned, their offense has done nothing this year to warrant going for it on 4th and 2 on their fist possession of the game, when Longwell's a near lock for a (43 yard?) FG. Fourth and one? Fine, run AP off the LEFT SIDE and smash the Dolphins in the mouth. Fourth and two with a sputtering Favre? You take the points, and let your defense do its thing. But not Childress, he's far too smart for such simplistic thinking.

If you're going to ignore the data that is available on this particular issue (going for it on 4th down), then you're not being any smarter than you accuse Childress of being. There are plenty of good reasons to go for it in that situation. Enough that characterizing it as "dumb dumb dumb" is flat out wrong. At worst it was marginally wrong. I think Childress is a terrible coach, but not for this.

I guess that's true. There was a commotion in that instance. Doesn't mean the critics were right, which was my main point.I forget the exact scenario of that particular decision, but what I do remember is:

1. Football outsiders, among others, crunched some stats to show that it was probably the correct decision. Certainly after all of the discussion, while you might have disagreed with it, it probably would have been too far to call it "dumb dumb dumb".

2. Bellichik has done it many times, and I only recall that one "meltdown" as you put it. If I remember correctly, that was not at the very beginning of a scoreless game, they were deep in their own territory, and it wasn't a choice of a FG attempt vs going for it. However, I guess your point is well taken. There were a lot of people that wrongly criticized that decision as well. Just like people are wrongly criticizing Childress for this decision. It's especially weird, because there's a million better things to criticize Childress about.

Childress was Lovie before Lovie was Lovie.. .. Childress is still trying to figure out how to coach himself out of a

:)Late in the 4th quarter, down by a touchdown or more :rolleyes:at that point of the game you take the points..

Really impressed with the secondary this year - seems like a huge improvement from last year.

When did Jason Allen learn how to play CB?

Vontae Davis is a star in the making.

Cameron Wake is getting constant pressure.

PRIME TIME for the next 2 weeks.

Home vs the Jets on Sunday night in Week 3

And then home vs the Pats on Monday night in Week 4.

Exactly. You can cite all the statistics you want. But on a fourth and TWO on your first possession of the game with a defense that was rock solid in Week 1, you take the points. That's especially true with a rusty Favre and a sputtering offense with not a single trustworthy receiver.
