General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

Fired it up last night, and wow - a beautiful game got even more so.  Going from 360 to the PS4 is quite the step up. So much more detail and color on top of 10x faster load times (I have actually fallen asleep waiting for the game to load while I enter a new area).  Even after playing the 360 version for countless hours this summer, I found myself being amazed all over.  Just gorgeous.

Anybody do much with being a werewolf?  Thought about doing a loner hunter/archer werewolf.  Seems like I see a lot of stuff about vampires, but not as much people talking about werewolves, so maybe it's not worth it?

I was down until I watched this video:

Ouch. I like the Special Editon's water a lot more, but the rest, yeah, mods on the original game gave a better appearance.

I wasn't using any of the mods he listed either, will have to give a few of them a try.

ETA: Though getting rid of the crappy pixelated shadows in the original would also be a nice thing. Tried changing all kind of settings to make those look better without much luck.

I am having even more fun on my second play through with the PS4 SE.

Doing the Wood Elf Archer/Thief/Sneak/Alchemist build. His name is Seratus

(On the PS3 I did the Destruction Mage/One Handed/Alchemist named Moses)

It is awesome. Level 15 already (like Karma said...say good bye to the family for a few months) and in the Thieves Guild. I made my way East to Riften after meeting with the Grey Beards. I will do the entire Thieves Guild quest line first (except turning in the Skeleton key) and mix in the main story. Then on to the Companions to get better training and experience in Block and One Handed weapons. Then on to the Dark Brotherhood. After that, maybe to the College of Winterhold to round out my Wood Elf in Illusion and Destruction magic, finish off the main questline (with the hundreds of side quests in between and exploration of the lands, caves, mines and dungeons) and then on to Dawn guard and Dragon Born DLC.

I am a rugged Wood Elf who is not very nice at all. I do have my eye on a Red Guard babe in Whiterun to marry, but she will never know of my other life as a Thief and Assassin. She will think I am highly successful merchant who travels most of the time. Little will she know of my scoundrel life style of thievery and murder Bwahhhhahahahahah.

So I dumped 250 hours into the PS3 version.....safe to say I will dump another 250 into this PS4 version. Here are the mods I am using thus far:

Rain and Snow FX

No Borders Solstheim

Castle Ragner

Spell Light Dynamic Shadows

Phenderix magic Evolved

You Don't Know Me

Merchants with 10K in gold to trade

Merchants at Inns

Lamp Posts On The Roads of Skyrim

Improved Road Signs (so you can clearly read them)

Nice. Love to hear character backstories / adventures.

I used the "alternate start" mod to land in the Dark Brotherhood. Kind of a wayward dude who didn't fit in, he was sent to the Skyrim office as punishment for mouthing off or whatnot (nevermind that Skyrim is technically the last remaining outpost - it's my story!) He did a few quests, but was uncertain once he heard them talking about killing an emperor. On his way to Riften to get an amulet appraised, he wandered by Helgen and snooped around, which triggered the main quest. Sidetracked by the whole Dragonborn thing, he quit the DB without ever getting the amulet appraised. Turns out he likes Skyrim too. Hearing about this Civil war thing - maybe some law and order isn't so bad (I sided with the stormcloaks the other time I did this questline). Will also help as cover for my planned thieving activity,

Got sneak up pretty high in my 12 levels of DB quests, and am doing the bow thing too, while also dabbling in some magic. Will just use light / leathery armor (not even elven), and am playing "one dagger only / no shield" for hand to hand, (going to stick with the Ebony dagger I started with.) Will not enchant, and may learn some blacksmithing later. But full on sneak thief / archer / magic to further help sneak - should be fun.

After that, I'll probably do a Cleric/Mage thing - Mace only, robes, and spells. There should be some good mods for new spells.

Making backstories and imposing limitations based on the character is really fun.

I've started a sneaky, lesbian pure archer using the Ordinator perk overhaul mod.

I've noticed that this mod makes sneaking a lot tougher (bases it not only on skill but on light and movement).  It's pleasantly challenging so far.

So I played through the PS3 version of Skyrim on multiple classes (archer, sneaky dagger rogue, mage, 2h tank).  My wife just bought us the PS4 edition and the mods I think are going to add a lot for me.  I've seen a few mage mods that seem really cool.  I think I'm going to get a few more playthroughs out of this.  A necromancer type build (undead summons/life drain spells), a beastmaster type build (saw one that will let you summon up to like 10 things at a time and included all beasts in the Skyrim world), and a poison/disease mage.  Super excited!

I only played as a mage. I think ill buy this tonight and start one of those sneaky elv type things that JTG talks about. Or maybe tank it up since that was fun for my fallout 4 build. But def not mage again

:pickle: PSA  :pickle:

Falskaar has apparently been converted to SE.  I'm not sure if this is up on the XBox mod listing(definitely not on the PS4 mod list), but this is one of those mega mods that adds about 20 hours of new quests/lands to explore.  It doesnt change how the game plays, just gives you a DLC sized expansion for free.

Ok, mod guys

This is what I have so far

Ordinator, perks of skyrim

The forgotten city

Unofficial skyrim patch

Alternate start

Anything else before I start

I ended up doing archer / dagger assassin. Let me know how it goes.

I have rich merchants (or whatever its called). Makes it so you don;t have to do a fast-travel three city tour to dump your stuff.

I will only buy this if I can be convinced the PS4 mods are worth it. Otherwise I still have Skyrim so I may just play that through again...

Someone mentioned the lanterns of skyrim. I have that on pc. Love it. Makes it easier to follow the road in the dark.

Think it was added in a DLC.
Gotcha.  Didn't remember being able to do it in the first base version that I bought, but thought maybe I didn't see it.  It's silly, but this might be my favorite thing about the SE versions.  I really freakin' hated running out of arrows.  I really don't even do a ton with the armor, but like to level that up just to upgrade the bow and arrows.

Nobody said either way, but I am going to probably go the route of the werewolf soon.  Don't really have a specific build or anything.  I am just a loner Breton hunter/archer that keeps to himself anyway.  Already have my base bachelor pad purchased over by Falkreath so I can keep more to myself and to my gardening and smithing in peace.  Figure this will be a safe refuge in case the villagers start coming after me with pickforks after I turn.

Haven't really travelled too far around, and going to keep the fast travelling to a minimum.  I think I am at level 12 or so, and basically just stuck to archery, smithing and light armor upgrades.  Will have to head out somewhere to find some ore to upgrade my bow soon.  I never touched the settings in any versions of the game I've played, but this time around it seems a tad harder to start which is good.  Keeps me from wandering around aimlessly.

I never really got into the werewolf thing. Spent too much time trying to get awesome weapons and armor I guess.

One tip on getting nice arrows, particularly if you haven't maxed out Smithing yet:

If you do the random Thieves Guild missions from the 2 people in the Ragged Flagon, once you've done 5 then they give you a special quest in that town.  When you complete, there will be 3 barrels that start showing up in town marked with the Thieve's Guild symbol, each of which will have a magic dagger and some other stuff and a bunch of arrows. At higher levels I was getting Daedric arrows from them. 3 per town, and like 5 towns, you can load a bunch just fast traveling to each town.  Then takes like a month of not visiting for them to respawn.

If I had not played this before, I would not like the mods. It just throws you in with no real story. I know that is what alt start means, just saying it for new people. I had to remember my way to the first village to clear search helgen. But I had spent 10 mins in helgen for nothing.

Also, im pretty sure the people I talk to have a lot more to say than my first run through. Wonder if that is a mod I installed without realizing.

Ok mage guys, please tell me how this class is fun or how to make it more fun. Really trying to get into it and I just do not find anything nearly as fun as playing an assassin/archer or 2H melee

Another Xbox mod that I really like is Less Aggressive Wildlife (or something like that). It keeps that lower level wildlife (Skeevers, Mudcrabs, basic wolves, etc) from attacking you on sight. Bears and the big cats will still attack if you get too close, but do so cautiously.

To me, it's essential, because your 40th level character constantly getting charged by a mudcrab was silly. Most animals would avoid a person, and this mod makes them do exactly that.

Full mage is fun if you really embrace the mage part and not just go total destruction (which is what most people do). That means maybe having a tank-y follower, summoning, illusion, etc. It might not be for you if your playstyle is full on attack. You need to avoid direct combat as much as possible and let your follower / summons soak the damage. Then when someone gets too close, the dual cast / stagger perks handle that.

Maybe try a spellsword type? Some mage / some warrior?

ETA - there's also a highly rated mod that adds 100+ spells. I haven't looked at it yet, but plan to when I do my mage/cleric build next.

The only mage type I can play is a sorcerer/battlemage. Replacing archery with magic as my main range attack.

I tried a follower but I killed him because he wouldnt/couldnt avoid my flames. I am only level 9 so I will give it to 15 or so.

I'm using conjuration with some destruction.  Low level still, but I drop an atronach, let her start wrecking #### and then come in and mop up.  I like having my minions do my bidding.

That's why I don't like followers as a mage  The only 2 I will use anymore with my mages is Mjoll or Serana. Otherwise I will summon an atronach or raise a dead something to help

Yea, to make that work, you can't lob spells into a melee battle - you will kill your follower (it's the only way they can die, I believe). Better to summon an atronach and/or use your spells to pick off the ones not in the melee brawl.

I conjured a flame and ice  atronach and a dog that I dont remember its name. With those guys tanking for me, it was rare that someone got a hit in.

I would head out to the college of winterfell (or whatever the name is) and work that entire story line. You will get a room there that is awesome and pick up some great skills IIRC.

I used a fireball as my main source of attack

You can buy a dog or use Barbosa. Barbosa is part of quest line and can't be killed,  just get him (which is very easy to do) and don't finish the quest and he is yours the rest of the game. You finish the quest he leaves you

The trouble with dogs for me is the barking all the time and Barbosa has a tendency to push against you when you are stopped so don't stop on the edge of a cliff because he might push you off.

No, it was like a demon dog that I conjured. Not the regular one that barks.

Started down the Dark Brotherhood path. That's a new one for me. Don't sneaky assassinations is fun. This game would be absolutely bonkers if they could add an Assassin's Creed layer to the mechanics.

After recently playing Fallout on hardcore for a bit, I am abusing the #### out of fast travel. I probably should scale it back at some point. Though, walking a million miles to carry out quick assassinations is never going to happen.

The gold / vendor mod seems a little OP. It really takes money out of the game pretty early.

I will probably turn to Vampirism once I finish both the DB and thieves guild quests. Then, I will pick a side and join the war. I don't think I ever completed the Vampire story and I definitely did not get involved with the war.

So much content I never touched back in the day. This game really is amazing.

Thought about taking out all the jarls once I get uber. Is that possible? Can you assassinate them?

it does a little bit, but no more than fast travel to a few places to sell your gear does (which i'm sure we've all done countless times). Money becomes a non-issue very early in Skyrim anyway. Once you save up for Breezehome, you're well on your way.

When I did my mage based character on PS3, I started out by focusing on Conjuration and one-handed weapon-based fighting.  So initially I was more like a fighter who can conjure.  Then I built up my other mage skills such as destruction.  That was fun because you can defend yourself if enemies get close to you but otherwise there are some powerful spells you can use which can be more fun than just bashing things with a sword.  I didn't start out just as a mage.  IMO that kind of character is too vulnerable early in the game so it's not as fun.

My recommendation would be to step back from the destruction and other spells (except for conjuration) for now, and spend some levels getting better at one-handed weapon based fighting and conjuration.  Keep your non-weapon hand open to cast spells.  When you are good enough at that, then go back to more spells.  I built up conjuration the fastest.  I love conjuring those demon guys (the high level conjuration).  They are powerful and can really help fight, but they are also funny with all of the trash talking.

This is pretty much me. I use the bow to take down people from a distance. I use magic close up generally. Way to get a good bow early is to go to the companions place after you help kill the giant. When you walk in there is a huge fight going on. Go downstairs and you will find a room with an elven bow. No one around to catch you so steal it. But make sure you have a lot of picks it is a tough lock.

I use flame magic mostly so I do invest in destruction. But this time I am trying to get into some conjuring.
