General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

I'm playing the vanilla version, no mods. It's the (somewhat) recently released ultimate version or game of the year version or whatever the ####.
I wouldn't waste anymore time, install the unofficial skyrim patch. All it does is fix the #### Bethesda was too lazy to fix. HUGE improvement.

So, I have read all 191 pages of this thread.  Bought this game back in 2012 and never really played it.  Finally started and after a couple character restarts, think I have figured out what I'm doing with it.  Having fun with a sneaky archer with one handed and shield for melee.  Not much magic.. mostly fall back and heal as needed.

So, I'm at level 11 right now and I was heading west from Whiterun and ran into a forsworn camp.  I know from this thread it is a questline, but I don't know any of the details.  I didn't read a lot of the spoilers unless it was something I had encountered, which has been very little comparatively.  Anyway, I picked off about half a dozen of these guys and was wondering if I should go in and wipe out the camp or just leave it for when I get the quest?  The camp is right where I made a special mark to find a sword from a book I read.  I also think that is the quest I have read somebody has gotten three times, so I am just trying to figure out my game plan.  Don't get a ton of time with it, so I like to make it count.  If I move on from that, I will probably go see the greybeards next.

Whaddya think?
As others have said it's ok to wipe them out. One thing I always did was after clearing out a place I'd look it up on the wiki and make sure I didn't miss anything.

I may actually finish the main story this time. I am working my way towards the door to Sovngarde. I got to ride the dragon but it could have been way cooler. There should have been a cut scene looking down as you fly over Skyrim. So that was kind of disappointing. Kind of disappointed you can't bring a follower as well. But I can live with that. Also I downloaded a small mod that allows you to convince the Blades that Paarthurnax will be left alive. You do have to get pretty pushy to make it happen basically going all you will obey or else. But they do cave and it's all good you still have the Blades with you. It was buggy for me though. I couldn't hear what Delphine was saying so I just had to push through the choices that kept showing up on my end. Worked though. After I finish the main story it will be off to deal with the fake Dragonborn. There can be only one.

That was the hardest boss battle for me in the game. And I thought it was ####ty that you had to choose between the blades and Paarthurnax, glad there is a mod that lets you force the blades to see the error of their black and white ways.

I choose Paarthunax over the Blades in my other playthroughs. They are just wrong and the devs should have given us this choice from the beginning.

Down goes Alduin. I actually finished the main story line. Using fire on someone with about 110% fire resistance isn't the best strategy.

So much left to do. But I do have a reward coming. I downloaded the castle players house mod. I should be the damn emperor and I deserve a castle.

This castle is frigging huge. You need the portals. The cloud storage part seems to work great. Looking forward to getting everything how I want it.

Is the mod available on PS4?  What's it called?

Unfortunately Paarthunax Dilemma isn't available for PS4.

My favorite type of character is a silent archer type.  I think I am going to try a twist on it now that I have 100 archery and sneaking skills.  I am going to combine sneak with magic use.  Most of the times when we see a magic user combined with another type of character, it's a spell sword (fighter/magic user).  I think it would be pretty badass to walk silently into a room full of enemies and cast ice storm, or some high level spell, and kill them all before they knew you were there.

Basically the character I am playing right now.

So I have now ended the war. Sided with the Empire. They kind of suck but the Stormcloaks are a little too racist and murdery for me. Took out the traitor myself.

How am I not Emperor?

There's a mod that apparently lets you become the emperor. After I finish up the DLC, there can be only one, I think I may try that out. Something like that should have been DLC. Only available after you end Alduin and the war.

OK, letting the FFA decide where I go from here:

  • The wife is leaving town for a few days, so I've got lots of bonus gaming time
  • I've finished both Skyrim and Fallout 4 once
  • Do I play the Nuka World DLC for the first time or pay to download the remastered edition of Skyrim (which I probably wouldn't finish again)?

If you've never played the DLC that seems like the way to go. However I had over 100 hours in Skyrim from my first playthrough and I am still enjoying the heck out of the Enhanced edition. Still finding places I've never been.

Some of my quests won't show map markers. Including a Dawnguard quest which is stopping my progress. Any ideas? Xbone.

Nuka World IMO. That was fun.

Ah ok. Yeah let me kill the mods. Thanks.
You may not have to delete or disable your mods.  Try just changing the load order.  Also, IIRC in the vanilla game there were a couple of quests with that glitch anyway so it may not be the mods.  I recently encountered one of them, but it was one of the minor side quests, not a Dawnguard quest.  What is the quest you are having a problem with?

My vanilla version is glitching all over the place. I'm a hybrid werewolf/vampire. That shouldn't happen. I completed the Imperial / Stormcloak quest and it tells me to report to Jarl Balgruuf but when I do, he proffers no dialog that initiates anything. The Thieves Guild quest line stalled out after 1 mission. Dude tells me to talk to Maven Blackbriar and she offers no quest. All I have left are a handful of miscellaneous quests, not all of which work (I still can't find any more "people to help in Falkreath") and all the main quests seem to be over or glitched except for doing BS jobs for the Companions or the Dark Mother.

123 hours in and it seems to be over. I'm not quite ready to say goodbye. I feel like I should be emperor. I feel like Hermaeus Mora and I have unfinished business. I feel like Aela should give up the wolf####.

What the hell do I do now?

This is ####in' weird, especially if you are ####in' around with mods and the such.  I have had a couple odd things happen, but not to the point were I can't advance any farther.

As far as the bolded, I haven't found more people to help either - I think I have helped 1.  I assumed that they weren't in the town proper, but more in the area that that Falkreath controls?

I wonder if this is all to do with that vampire/werewolf glitch.  Aren't there rules in the game when you are one or the other - townsfolk won't interact with you, will attack you on site, some sort of nonsense?

None of that happens. I have a few people yell "Vampire!" but only those who attack me on sight anyway (Forsworn, etc.) I have the vampire powers but cannot transform into the Vampire Lord. I can transform into the wolf. The extra powers are cool, but the weaknesses to fire and in daylight are frigging annoying at times.

Well if it were me I'd install the unofficial patch. I'd also install some cheat mods, IIRC they can cure werewolf but can't cure Vampirism.....however if you go through Dawnguard I believe you can get cured.

Serana can cure Vampirism

I had a dawnguard quest glitch, and it's unfixable. I didn't realize the Elder scroll was in that machine where you transcribed it, and I returned to the guy, and then helped him by getting the blood (which is the second half of that same quest.) I found out that glitches the scroll - the quest marker vanished, and if you return to the machine and grab it, it just vanishes from your inventory. I even tried the cheat room and add the scroll, but the game seems to know it's not the real one, I suppose.

@Evilgrin 72 In Falkreath you can sell firewood to Hert at the mill on the lake, you can pick crops at  corpselight farm, and there's an old guy that used to be Jarl that has a simple quest you can do...he's usually at the inn in the afternoon/evening.

Serana can cure Vampirism
Not if she herself has been cured, or so I read. Naturally, I did that and killed her pappy in the Dawnguard quest. Dude in Morthal doesn't recognize me as a full vampire and offer to cure me.

Some online reading revealed one or two others with the same circumstances and consensus was that it's permanent.

I already slaughtered Hert. I've gone to the ex-Jarl a couple of times and got nothing, but I'll try again. I may have tried picking crops too, but I'll try that again as well. Thanks.

WTF.  So do you have to reinstall the game?  When you were reading about it, is it something that happens all the time if it happened once, or was it just a fluke thing or the way one quest happened and snowballed?

It's stuff like that vampire thing @Evilgrin 72 is going through that has me hesitant about buying the game again for my PS4

ETA: Which sucks because FO4 is about played out for me now and I need a new sandbox game to play

That's why I was surprised that it's just the base game.  I would get it if he was dicking around with a lot of mods.
I can't imagine playing the game without mods - on my PC I ran it with something like 30 mods at a time, most for better gameplay and more quests, only a few to enhance the visuals including boob size ;)

Vanilla still has a metric ####ton of bugs, I would never start a playthrough without the unofficial patch. Sucks you don't get the achievements but I'd rather have a solid play through vs the achievements.

I'm also stuck on only 1/3 people helped in Falkreath, but I don't think I've tried selling firewood or picking crops yet - thanks Homer.

I probably have a good 20 mods or so on my XB1 and have only had a few glitches so far, although a big one is that I can't enter my Skyfall house without the game freezing and then resetting. I still have to figure out if the mod order is messing that one up.

Not necessarily reinstall the game, but start a new character.  Apparently, if you give Serana a blood potion and she uses it, you get infected with the vampirism disease.  You won't know it unless you catch it in active effects until symptoms begin to manifest.  You get the powers and negative effects of the vampire without actually becoming a Vampire Lord (you cannot feed to suppress the effects.)  The way to cure it is to become a full-blown vampire and then get cured by the jackwagon in Morthal. This can be achieved either through Serana or Harkon.  As it is, the guy in Morthal doesn't recognize me as a full vamp and doesn't offer a cure.

By the time this happened, I had sent Serana to get cured by the guy in Morthal and I had killed Harkon already.  Apparently, Shroud Hearth Barrow is where this often occurs, but for whatever reason, I had finished the Dawnguard storyline before I got around to clearing the Barrow.  So Serana was my out, but I sent her to get cured just before I noticed the symptoms setting in.  The few people who had experienced the same set of circumstances said there was no way to fix at this point.  Apparently, some people try for the wolf/vampire hybrid intentionally, so I'm just dealing with it, but the negative affects of vampirism are annoying sometimes.

I don't even know how to obtain mods.
Are you playing on PC or console? On the XBox at game start you just choose mods and it takes you to the XBox Nexus I guess. I would think it would be pretty similar for PS4 although their rules have modders avoiding them to a degree. On PC go here. If you do nothing else get the unofficial patch. Just download and away you go.

On PS4 you have to sign on to bethesda.net and then download

I think I was getting too cocky with my skills.  Might have hit one of those level-ups when the baddies get harder ( I am on level 28 I think?).  Haven't put a ton in my health or armor yet, and now I am getting murdered consistently.   First was dude in the Brewery basement took me out quickly with some fire, then it's Bandit Marauders at the docks killing me with 2 arrows.  Still can one and two shot kill a lot of things, but I definitely need to watch my step and go slow for a bit until I get my Light Armor perks up and my Armor skill up to create something else (currently just rocking the Thieves Guild Armor).

PS4.  I may try this tomorrow, thanks.

I got the Stahlrim armor set in Solstheim on a quest and threw a bunch of perks into Light Armor and got my armor rating to 400+ pretty quickly, even with no shield.  As long as there's not fire involved (stupid vampirism) - I'm damn near indestructible.  Sometimes just for fun, I'll save the game right before I quit and then just roll into Dragonsreach and kill everyone 10 times over as they respawn just to get my bloodlust out.  I don't think my HP ever get below 90% without restoration or potions.  I'm just a sherman tank with a mace and a chain lightning spell.

That crazy fker in the Honnibgbrew basement was a nightmare the first time I played. Hate that guy.

Also, I developed a "calling card."  Every time I kill a female NPC, I remove all her armor and drop it in the corner of the room or across a field so that her corpse is left to its eternal rest in its underwear.  As a side note, I am 44 years old.

Do the Deathbrand quest in Solstheim and you'll end up with a full set of Deathbrand armor (armor plus gauntlets, boots, and helm.)  The pieces themselves are solid, but when worn as a set, you get a +100 bonus to your armor rating.  Keep leveling up your Light Armor rating and throw the perks whenever possible into the one that gives you a +20%/40%/60% etc increase in Light Armor effectiveness and you'll be up there in no time.  In addition to being as good or better than even Daedric armor, you also get waterbreathing, +60 stamina, +40 carrying capacity and +40 one handed attacks when dual wielding.

As far vampirism and other diseases, even though this may not help you at this point, in general I make it a habit of going to a shrine frequently since that cures diseases.  Any time I am near one I activate it just in case.

I don't even know where Solstheim is.  I haven't travelled much.  Don't know how I am even at 30 without doing much
