General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

So if a dragon gets you down to 1/4 health and you're standing right in front of him, he can grab you in his jaws, toss you around, then throw you a couple hundred yards away to your death.
What made you think that standing directly in front of a dragon was a good idea in the first place?
He was low on health and I thought I could dual dagger him to death. It was bad tactics. I usually summon something to occupy its attention while I sneak around to stab him in the back.

How do you negate a bounty without paying it and sacrificing all your stolen crap? In Oblivion you'd pay off your guild contact.
I have had luck just telling them I'm the Thane (assuming you are) and they let it go.
What about areas where you are not the Thane?
I think you can sort of do the same thing when in the Thieves Guild but it's just a lower fine, it isn't going to a separate contact like in Oblivion.Best thing is probably to just drop all your stolen stuff somewhere safe, go pay your bounty, and return and pick it back up.

Im getting very frustrated not being able to defeat this one guy. I have tried Arrows, arrows with potions, magic, swords, shouts and scrolls. This is the only guy in the game that has given me any kind of trouble. Killing dragons alone is easier. I may need to get a companion and come back.
Got any summon scrolls? Those can come in handy.

The Shadowmarks book tells you what all of the marks mean: protected, good loot, fence, danger, etc. The marks themselves are somewhere on the exterior of the house, generally near the door. Sometimes at ground level, sometimes above the door... somebody who wasn't looking for them would probably never notice them, but when you know what to look for, they stand out pretty well.

But not every building has one, so don't drive yourself nuts. Many residences do, though. Especially swank ones.

If you want to see an example, go to Windhelm. Spot the "protected" mark on the Clan Cruel-Sea house, and the "loot" mark on both Clan Shatter-Shield and Viola Giordano's House.
Shadowmarks Book

In case you guys want to study up.
:goodposting: X 2 . thanks guys.
Bumping this for others who may have missed this because it's freaking cool.

Only downsides I've seen to the game so far: The openness sometimes paralyzes my decision making. If I do X now, will I regret having done it or not done it later? Should I buy this item? Take that perk? The map is teh suck. It's hard to maneuver the world map, and the local ones look all gray and washed out, and I can't tell what the different shades are supposed to depict.
I love the openness, but agree on the local map, in particular. If I may add my own really the only thing I am disappointed in is the general lack of creativity that went into dungeon design. Don't get me wrong, the ambiance of different ones is really well done. What I refer to is their one dimensionality. In literally every one I have been into (50+) you are channeled in one direction with no real choices involved. You get in, get herded to the boss monster, get a treasure room, and then if it is a big one you get a backdoor out. I'm hoping they get better from here on out, but I have my doubts.

I'm not entirely opposed to that, but a younger me would adamantly disagree. One of my gripes is how diverse your character can be. Maybe I'm just programed to accept classes but it appears I can be a duel wielding, backstabbing archer who uses magic when he gets caught stealing.Im the reverse on the map sucking. The local map is fine, the over world map is a jumbled mess of icons and you can only zoom out so far. On top of that, names don't show on the bigger towns/providences so you (I) don't get a good feel for specific areas.

MiniDoss just told me about some bookcase glitch that pretty much ruins the leveling up aspect...so everyone is going to be level 80 in everything with no effort.

I heard about that and will stay far away as will most who enjoy this kind of game.
Yea...we're doing the same here...just sucks though.Hopefully a patch will happen quickly.
I envy that you get to enjoy a game like this with your son. some of my fondest gaming memories was beating games with my brother as kids. We were beating The Legend Of Zelda, Phantasy Star, and stuff like that.

It is a great joy of mine. And to see how he thinks and works through things is awesome as well.I've been seriously considering building a gaming pc and getting Skyrim on PC as well and he convinced me not to do it because you'll just cheat. It's too easy to cheat on the PC and there's going to be one chest or door that I'll want to open before I have the level for it and I'll just use the cheat or something. And eventually I'll end up cheating on the entire game.I don't think I would...but he's right...it's just to easy to on the PC and it's just too tempting. It was really cool to see how he thought that through and didn't approve.

I understand where you're coming from, when I first learned about the console commands back in Morrowind I did that a bit. And of course found it ruined the game and haven't done it since. But there is SO much that you're missing if you don't get the PC version eventually. In Oblivion I'm sure I had over 200 mods loaded. Some of them are just to fix the bugs that Bethesda never did. But you can find ones that will change just about anything. Don't like the leveling system? Download a mod that changes it to how you want. For Oblivion you could speed up or slow down the level rate, add a good old XP system, or just base the stat gains straight off of improving skills (which Skyrim later adopted). Don't like the inventory interface? Replace it. Done all the missions? Download entire new regions of the map, cities and quests. Don't like how everything leveled at the same rate as you? Download Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul that completely changes the economy, the monster levels, the ability to brew beer and mead, adds a ton of new quests, like two elven factions invading and going to war with each other, a faction of slavers, spectral minions and a quest line you can go through to gain the power to wield their ghost weapons.New races to play. The ability to buy seeds to plant your own potion ingredient gardens. A lot of the "new" things they added to Fallout and Skyrim were things that users came up with as mods. Like how the plants change when you pick the ingredients, that was the Harvest Flora mod that introduced that to Bethesda games. Fan of martial arts movies? Download combat mods that have martial arts moves including the character actions for them to where you'll want to fight in 3rd person just because it looks cool. It's just amazing the things that people do with these games on the PC. The whole companion concept really got going in the mods. Ruined Tail's Tale, the story of an Argonian who grew up in a sect of assassins but now has come to question the morality of killing and joins you as a companion and over time asks your thoughts on moral issues and your responses guide how his story plays out. By far the best quest line I've ever seen in a Bethesda game.Anyway, you get the point. Enjoy it on console first to not have the temptation if you need, but it is worth playing on the PC down the road because the mods available can turn it into an entirely new game.

I'm going to bed now. But I took down my second dragon. Well, perhaps more accurately I was around when three soldiers were defending a town and I helped finish him off. Kind of funny bc the soldiers dismount to fight, then a frostbite spider got in the mix, and the dragon for some reason focused its attack on the horses. What a mess. I was able to get 90 degrees to the dragon's attacks on the horses and put him down. And I got the soul and used it to enable

a shout that calms wild animals, which is pretty cool.

My favorite shout so far
is one that freezes enemies for 10ish seconds... very handy when you have three people running at you and you can freeze them all with one shout.

All of you are saying how easy it is to bring down dragons, but the 2nd dragon I've faced is owning me. I'm a level 12 and on top of the mountain where there are those 2 really high half-bridge kind of things. The dragon just flies around me and if I step to far left or right, I fall off the freaking half-bridge thing. My fireballs and poison arrows barely dent this damn thing. My sparks and flames won't reach it. I swear I've been killed 10 times and I've never gotten the dragons health below 80%. I was on my way to get the horn thing following learning the shout when I ran into this thing. Frustrating.

Created a God Hammer last night just in case things got crazy while cave diving.

105 Base Damage

Absorb 20 Health

+25 in Lightning Damage

Yeah, by far the hardest guy in the game I've faced so far.I remember you guys talking about him being tough so I went to check out that quest. Walked through him without even taking a potion, that is when I started thinking about just doing the main quest and hopefully things get tougher or I will just start over with a new character. :kicksrock:Oh, on the main quest I got another shout :lmao:
The shout where you have to talk to the dragon about defeating Anduin, the firebreath one. If you breath that on one of the mountain goats going back down the mountain...not only does it fry them but also picks them up and throws them far away. Pretty funny to do.

Tips -1. Counter its elements. If it breathes frost, hit it with fire. If it breaths fire, hit it with frost.2. Summon something to act as a target dummy. Never go one-on-one with a dragon unless you're a tank.3. Be patient and wait for it to land. Then whirlwind sprint (or just run) to it and wail away until it takes off again. Unless you're a master marksmen (with bow or spells) you'll only hit the thing in the air every 5 or 6 shots. It's a waste of magic and/or arrows.

Could you explain this? Bookcase glitch? What bookcase? How does this affect level? You mean skill levels?:shuked:
There was a glitch where you could pick up unlimited Books of oblivion but they patched it. I did it once because I figured it was just as simple as cutting wood for an hour. I got about 300 books. Im sure its something similar.

Don't there have to be some dead bodies around for me to raise zombies? I don't think I can summon anything out of thin air. I forgot about the sprint, that will be helpful.

:finger: :boxing: That is my fault for doing a tank. I always tend to play that role the first time through, if you just do the main quest it is pretty fun. This time I did way too many side quests and as a level 43 tank there isn't a whole lot in the game that can stand toe to toe with me at this point. Does anyone else have the
ebony armor you get on one of the daedric quests that gives off poison damage when things get too close? It is good armor after being smithed, but the constant black fumes it gives off is kind of annoying when you are trying to use a bow. Doesn't affect my sneak ability though.

JamesConjuration is not only zombies. Try a flame Antioch. It's my BFF. Helps a ton with dragons.
Forgive my stupidity, but how do I know I have conjuration? I don't think I have magic specifically called that.
Go to the menu, choose the "magic" direction and conjuration, destruction, shouts, etc will be choices. It will tell you what you have available in each category, let you choose favorites, tell you active affects, etc.

Onto glass creation...and created my first bow. Finished it to legendary and added "absorb 11 points of health"

it's about 85ish on damage plus the health I absorb and I'm pretty indestructible at my level now. Tested it out just before bed by turning on the guards in Whiterun and my health never got below half.

FWIW I would have a really tough time taking one down solo. But if you are near a town, everyone pitches in. That helps a lot. And yes, don't be afraid of sprinting away. I also try to find a spot with some cover until it lands again.

I don't think this thing is going to land because the only thing to land on are the two narrow half bridges sticking out of the mountain.

Are you to the Northwest of Whiterun? I think this is where my 2nd dragon encounter kept occurring. I was getting wailed every time too and eventually took the long way around to stay out of it's path.

Just dl the patch and there is a definite difference for PS3 guys. :yay:
I just came to post this. Even saw you on while I was downloading the patch. :lmao:Yea, it looks like the lag issues in cities is gone.
So this is working out for you guys? I've read elsewhere that installing the patch results in some graphics degradation? Confirm/Deny?
I am not sure about the graphics, if they have changed I haven't really noticed. However...........the lag that was making it unplayable to me (or close to it) is gone. I was literally having 2-3 seconds of lag when I was turning a corner in town. :hot: One interesting thing I did note, my save file went from 11MB+ to 10MB after the patch and playing for about an hour...so more playing time but a smaller save file. Maybe I will get the lag again when it gets bigger, but fingers crossed at this point.

This is consistent with what I've read elsewhere. Apparently one of the things that Bethesda did was change the game so that more things in the game reset or they reset faster. So there's fewer specific things for the game to keep track of, resulting in a smaller game file.I'm still scoping out SSDs, though. Only owned the Playstation since Saturday night and last night started hitting frame stuttering. I'm waiting on installing the latest patch until I see how bad the lag gets and if the patch creates new problems. One of the funnier ones I've read about is some type of dragon (frost, maybe?) now flies backwards. Or at least it does for some people.
I have never had this problem with the PS3 other than this game. I haven't played Fallout 3 long enough, just couldn't get into it but have heard that game had similar problems. No frost dragon encounter for me, although I did kill....hmmmmm...can't remember the type but I can say for sure it wasn't flying backwards.

Had the dragon music kick in and I went into Inventory to equip my bow. Before I could notch an arrow the dragon fell out of the sky and died in front of me. Must have scared him to death.
Close to the same thing: Was sitting on some rocks at night, trying to get my bearings, and down below me a dragon lands with his health bar almost empty (I'm assuming he came from another fight?). Promptly unloaded two arrows into him and BAM! Another dragon soul.I had three hired thugs come at me when I was trying to take down my first dragon on the main storyline, RIGHT AS THE DRAGON LANDED. I must have died at least 10 times before I figured out a way to run them in front of the dragon and let him take care of them :hophead: And they were hired by the family of a hunter I killed outside of Riverwood. There were no humans around, so I can only assume that a wolf or fox, etc saw me and took out a bounty on me :banned: I must be blind, because I haven't found any of the Shadowmarks books in the Thieves Guild, but it's cool to check the houses for marks now  I'd still love to have one of the books in my inventory instead of checking it out online while I'm playing, though.

Of course depends on your skills and what kind of char you have...But I fought one on a mountain top where it had no room to land. I'm playing basically a mage/archer, don't think I've even swung a weapon at anyone yet.I pretty much was plugging him with arrows while he would hit me with his breath weapon, then soon as he was done and he'd fly around I'd heal myself with healing spells back to full and then go back to plugging him with arrows. I think I only needed 2 magicka potions before I took him down to a point he landed at the base of the mountain and I was able to finish him off at long range with the bow.Of course if you didn't put points into magicka, wearing magicka regen gear, and have an appropriate perk for half price casting of restoration/healing spells, it might not be that easy for you.Oh, and hitting it with a fiery breath shout when recharged helped too, stunned it for awhile which gave me more time to hit it.

I found 2 copies of the book in the Thieves Guild. I recall one was sitting on a barrel, though don't recall which barrel exactly.

oh, is it okay to admit being scared so much that I screamed like a little girl when a wolf sneaked up behind me and attacked me?

If it's not okay, it didn't happen
