General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (3 Viewers)

will I naturally be assigned another companion like I was with Lydia or do I need to go somewhere and purchase/hire a new friend?
There's a handful of people that you could get as part of a quest. If you want a follower, most of the bars in the big towns have "for hire" companions. I think they're all 500 gold, but I could be wrong.

Quick PS3 bug update request. I haven't played yet as I am still trying to finish Demon's Souls, so I've really been avoiding the thread as spoilers are inevitable and haven't kept up. But I had my son over the weekend and he decided to play it. He was really in to it and played long enough to get his character up to level 11. I don't know exactly how much he has played (hopefully you guys have an idea based on his level), but it hasn't been anything to extravagant. Thing is, he came out complaining that the game is already slowing way down on him. Now, we're talking playing over a three day weekend while also playing other games. So it isn't like he has sat and been hammering away at the game all weekend long. We've been co-op playing Dead Island, so he really only has put a few hours in each day over a three day weekend. It kind of scares me that he is already seeing such bad lag. Is this normal for the PS3 version? Has the lag issue been big? He admitted to only keeping one save. Is a work around to keep multilpe saves? Or would the save size be the same for the last file anyways? Just looking for any info (good or bad) on the lag thing with the PS3. TIA.
It is common. It's questionable whether or not Bethesda will be able to fix it. Multiple saves wouldn't do anything. Bethesda put out a patch on Monday that was supposed to improve things but only made them worse.
The 1.2 patch they put out this week fixed all my lag issues.

Played last night for a while and was enjoying everything. Running up past some bandit camp (fairly low level quest I still had on my to do list) and running around the side of a hill saw a nice looking elk. Decided to sprint at it and double blast it with fireballs streaming from both hands. Roasted him in fairly short order.

Stop to get my bearings and drink some real-life wine and something starts drilling the crap out of me. Spin around to see multiple elk attacking me including some etheral green one! Scared the crap out of me and almost took me out. I'm playing pure mage and have absolutely zero buffs on health as it is all dumped into magic. I'm lethal at a distance but shatter like glass as soon as anyone or anything gets in melee range.

Too funny.
That's where having a companion, dog and horse come in handy.
I had Lydia with me but she got all burnt up in some dungeon with fire coming up from floor vents. In the natural course of game flow I haven't come across a way to pick up another companion. I don't mind spoilers....will I naturally be assigned another companion like I was with Lydia or do I need to go somewhere and purchase/hire a new friend?
Other Jarl's have Lydia equivalents they'll assign you, in addition to the numerous other people you can add.

Where do you guys sell your stuff? The thieves guild fence is barred from me because of a quest bug, an all the other shops seem to be limited to 750 gold. I'm a level 42 and have probably 30 items that are worth more than 1000 I can't unload anywhere for fair value.

You can buy smaller items from them first, to give them enough money to cover the value of what you want them to buy, then sell them the big item, wait for their money to replenish and sell them the small items you bought originally. It's not perfect, but better than giving your stuff away. Also, I think one of the speechcraft perks is to be able to invest in merchants so they have more gold on hand.

This just strikes me as odd. Why would they have such an issue with the PS3 but not the Xbox? Aren't most consoles essentially the same on the inside? Or do they actually use a vary different propriatary system language that makes them very different? Just seems odd they could not have the issue on one system, and have an essentially unfixable issue on another. To be honest, the whole reason I chose to get in to the console thing over upgrading the computer again was I thought consoles were supposed to be above these type of system issues. No compatability problems, yada yada yada.

I'm level 13 on a PS3 and have not had any lag at all.

anyone else having a horse issue like this? I settled a stable owners debt and he asked how he could repay me. The horse he had there wen from steal to take. So I thought, "Cool, free horse"

Now, every time I get off of the horse the ####er starts to walk away. He returns every time I fast travel, but ends up walking away again. :( I've swam him out to an island to see what he would do and he swims away :hot:

I can't figure out what kind of character I want to be. I started out as a Dark Elf. I mostly use spells when fighting, but I also whip out my shield and mace setup. However, archery is super fun! I also like stealing from people? WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!!??!?!
All of the above?I'd say the only thing you really should decide is what kind of combat damage you want to do primarily. Because you don't want to burn lots of perks in 1-handed, 2-handed, destruction, and archery. I'd concentrate on one of them and then just drop 1 or 2 perks into 1 or 2 of the others. Mostly I use spells to kill guys but I do try to soften them up with an arrow beforehand and am not above whipping out a 1-handed sword if I run into a mage who out-guns me. But I've only dropped 2 perk points into archery and none in 1-handed.
Do you think I should drop the shield? Basically when I battle I like to fire a few arrows and when they charge me I shoot them with fire. If they get too close I switch to my mace and shield. Also, what type of armor should I use? If I mostly want to use magic, am I better off with robes and not heavy armor?
I carried a shield for a while then eventually sold it because I never used it. If nothing else, you can be healing in that hand. Up to you, though.Armor just personal weight/sneakiness preference. I use light so I can sneak some but do use the mage's robe for the magicka regen. I'm L16 or so, chose Altmer to start, have only thrown 6 level-ups into health and the rest into magicka, have some plus magicka items, and I still always run out of magicka. But again, totally up to you.
I started out pretty much the same, ditched my shield and finally ditched my lunar mace after I realized I'd never swung it a single time. Have only used archery and magic.I agree with picking no more than 2 combat types to focus on. If you do go with archery, I find the zoom-in ability to be very worthwhile. Oh, and if you are tired of arrows being shot at somewhere above your cursor rather than right at it, if you're on the PC you can fix that by adjusting two parameters in one of the .ini files. If anyone wants instructions let me know and I can dig up again what they are.If you're going with magic, getting the "spells cost half price" perks for Destruction is big. I also recommend getting the one where dual-casting will stagger an opponent most of the time. Since picking it up, far fewer opponents make it within melee range of me. Also if going with magic, I would go with the best destruction robes. The Adept robes give you 100% magicka regen and 17% reduction on Destruction spell costs. I also wear a helm that gives me another 17% reduction on Destruction. And there is also a perk in the Restoration tree that increases magicka regen. If you go with a couple of items that have that (I have a necklace that does it too), you can really refill your magicka meter faster without needing many potions. Just have to stop casting for a moment, so a quick switch to a bow for 2 shots is normally enough regen I can go back to spells.
Not sure if this is going to spoil anything for anyone but here's something that can help you
If you have your enchanting up you can disenchant your destruction robes and then enchant that same enchantment onto several pieces of armor. You can basically make destruction spells cost nothing to cast at all.

Yeah, I got a mage dude for 500 gold after I accidentally whacked Lydia. He's pretty good. Covers my ### when I'm running around through the woods.

Supposing I happen upon a cave/mine/dungeon. Should I go in and clear it, or will that mess up some other quest that will come later?
It shouldn't but there are inevitably bugs in Bethesda games like this. I wouldn't let it stop me from dungeon diving, though. If you're really nervous, you can check out the elder scrolls wiki before entering one to see if anyone's reported any bugs related to that area.I have been unable to complete the very first Companions quest because I killed the mage earlier in the game. The dungeon re spawned with spiders, but the mage did not. He's just lying on the floor dead with a white arrow hovering over him. Since the deed was done much earlier in the game I'm not going to go all the way back to a much earlier save. Unless there is a fix some is aware of, I guess it will give me something to look forward to during the second play through.
Along with what buddyboy mentioned, another thing to consider is the effect on monster level. For most dungeons, when you enter it, it "locks" the denizens in at your current level. So if you step into a dungeon at level 5, then come back at level 30, the denizens will probably still be level 5. Some quest areas might not follow that rule, but most do from what I hear.

While that might like sound like a great way to clear areas easily, just lock them in then come back later, that might also be true of the items you get in there. So me personally, I don't want to enter a place until I am ready to clear it.

buddyboy, if you are on PC you could search on the web for the quest stage identifiers for the quest you're on, and use a command in the console to advance yourself to the next stage.

There's also Mallus from the Maven quest to poison Honningbrew Meadery. When you complete the quest one of the last things he tells you is "look me up if you ever need to fence anything" or something like that. I haven't tried it yet as I just finished the quest and went back to Riften, but I will tonight and can report back if nobody else knows.

Does anyone know where Mavus Blackbriar hangs out besides creeping near the market in Riften at night? I finished one of her tasks and need to go speak to her, but can't seem to find her. I've never once actually found her at Blackbriar Manor, either - doesn't she ever just want to spend a quiet night at home?

Maven is usually upstairs at the inn in Riften.

This. I've read enough game reviews to see that programmers have a harder time with PS3 for whatever reason.

:bag: :bag: :bag: Thanks to both who posted this. I haven't been upstairs there in a while since I looted everyone in it. Didn't even occur to me to go back up there. I most likely would have never thought of going up there, and would have just had to get lucky and run into her at night in the market like I did before. Whew :hey:

I understand this is the next in the franchise but is this pretty much the "same" as Oblivion?
Yes and no.There are a couple of new things, primarily Shouts and dragons flying around as creatures. But I would say fundamentally this is a better version of Oblivion. Better how? Primarily the leveling system is much, much better. In Oblivion I'd constantly be worrying about what skills were being leveled and how many pts I was getting in stats at each level and do dumb stuff like jump on and off a fountain for 30 minutes to maximize that increase. I haven't really thought about what skills were being leveled in Skyrim once. I certainly haven't worried about it. Some skills level, not always the ones I really care about, but that's fine. The perks system guides where your character is really improving. There are some other things that are also improved: the lockpicking is much better, the archery is much better, the spell-casting is much cooler, the mage's clothes are better, there's some awesome killing moves that your character does, the dungeons are more varied... the list could go on but you get the point. That all said, I think this is a better Oblivion not fundamentally a different game. The most noticeable things are the things that were pains in Oblivion and now aren't not the things that are fundamentally new to the franchise.
Ok thanks doesn't sound like my thing. I tried to get into RPG with Oblivion and pretty much spent all by time in the battle arena :)Thanks

Agreed, it is still much the same type of game, but I am having a hard time coming up with any changes they made and thinking, "I wish they went back to how it worked in Oblivion". I've used 4 different leveling systems for Oblivion including the stock one, and the Skyrim system beats all four if you ask me.

It's also nice that the critters in some areas do not depend on your level. It's a good balance, still lets you hit some areas that you are in over your head but can get a great reward if you can get creative in winning your fights, while most areas are a regular challenge.

I'd add that the graphics for Skyrim are so much better than Oblivion that it's not comparable. I wasn't a big fan of the Oblivion graphics, to be honest. I'm constantly blown away by the scenery in Skyrim, and as others have pointed out I often find myself just panning around and taking it all in, especially when I'm standing on top of a mountain or big rock and looking out over the countryside. Just yesterday I stopped dead in my tracks outside of Whiterun to watch the water rush over the rocks and under the bridge I was crossing :nerd:

Have you ever noticed that if you look down in the forest you can see friggen' ANTS running around? The attention to detail is insane in this game and I have no idea how they fit on one disc, let alone with minimum load times.I haven't played a lot of them, but its the best sandbox type game by a 10-1 margin I've ever played. The game best reminds me of the original Final Fantasy for the NES mixed with Knights of the Old Republic and a good FPS shooter. I played Morrowind years ago with the XBox release and didn't get into it at all. This has had my attention from the 2nd I put it in. I've actually managed to keep from turning it on the last few days. I have a feeling I'm in for another soul sucking weekend. I've put about 75 hours in and still have a huge "to do" list.

Just really delved in today, and it is a good game. I like that they finally made archery a viable option, as well. I am enjoying sneaking around bringing death to bandits and undead, thus far. The only hard thing is deciding how to play. I always love the bow, but then I just feel like I am missing out by not leveling my magic, either.

There is no reason you can't do a mix. I am playing as a nord with good blocking and one handed, as well as pretty decent archery and magic skills. Typically I hit them from long range with an arrow, switch to dual wielded magic, and when that runs out I beat them to a pulp with my shield and mace.

So if you had to choose PC or Xbox..... I may make this a present for Christmas but not sure yet
So, you go and build a new rig to play games, and you ask THIS? You are dead to me, belljr.
Mad Cow -> wait   Sorry should have asked that better. You are right. :bag: I guess I meant was this a port, is it really an extra benefit etc. Some games don't translate well from pc to system and vice versa.Remember my last PC game was Half life 2 :P well bf3 nowbut I think I know the answer....

Ordered. Arrives December 1st. Anything I need to know? What class/setup should I run? XBOX-360
You don't need to know anything. I picked this game up on XBox 360 after NEVER having played an RPG type game in my life. I picked everything up within a matter of hours and you just figure out things as you go along. That is a lot of the fun, just figuring things out as you go along. The one thing I would say, I guess, is make sure you save frequently.
Correct. I got the guidebook (since my nephew had it and I figured hell if HE needs a guidebook) but really haven't looked at it aside from an evaluation of the power tree. I've decided to only go back to it if I really want a reference as it's pretty easy to figure out how to do stuff. Not going to cheat and read the alchemy spoilers.I'm doing the high elf thing and finally am getting comfortable with using the magic and toasting guys instead of trying the old-school bash the heck out of everyone thing.Game is ridiculously fun.-QG

If you have a new rig, PC for sure. The mods will keep adding to the game.
I dunno...as much as I love the mods (I had Oblivion on the PC), I'm wayyyy more comfortable kicking it on my couch and playing this on the big screen. And the game is so much fun that I'm already enjoying myself a ton as it is. While the PC may be the better way to go, I'm not sure that it's SO much better than my 360 as to make me give up the comfort and big screen.

I've got it on console but will probably keep an eye on Steam for a cheap copy for PC in the future. If I can get it for $30 a year from now when there will be a lot of great mods out I'll do it for sure.

Depends id you want to play a 200+ hour game sitting on your couch of crouched over desk.
So Steam automatically uploaded the 1.2 patch, which apparently breaks a number of things. Included is that the mod I was using to put the HUD back on the center monitor is no longer compatible and it just crashes to desktop if you try.Luckily someone had archived his game directory and put it out on the net for download. Was able to replace the TESV.exe, and in the Data folder the Skyrim - Interface.bsa and also the update.bsm files and it reverted me back to a version that works, until the guy who made the mod adjusts it to work with the patch.
This is exactly why I no longer buy PC games. While the mods are cool, the chances of some random bug or just the overall hassle of "making the game run" is more then I can handle. I used to use MS-Dos, but now I just want to play.I'm just no longer as knowledgeable as I was when it comes to the PC, and I'm too old/lazy to figure it out even though I could. I just want to play.To each his own.

The only hard thing is deciding how to play. I always love the bow, but then I just feel like I am missing out by not leveling my magic, either.
I'm bowing and conjuring.
Me too and was thinking about if that is redundant to focus on leveling destruction and bow since both are ranged attacks. But nah, sometimes I want to shoot someone with an arrow and sometimes I want to smoke them w firebolt. Why do I keep getting sick?

So I opened the game for the first time and decided to check out the included map first. I then proceeded to wet myself in intimidation when seeing just how freaking huge this world is.

:excited:

BF3, MW3, and Skyrim; so long real human contact.

So if you had to choose PC or Xbox..... I may make this a present for Christmas but not sure yet
So, you go and build a new rig to play games, and you ask THIS? You are dead to me, belljr.
I'm looking to do the same. In a year, the best mods will have been made, tested, and fixed. And in the meantime, I'll enjoy Skyrim from my recliner.

Maybe those Skeevers are infecting you. It took me a while of everyone telling me "don't take this personally, but you don't look so good" before I realized I might have some sort of disease from something I'd been fighting. Either that or they're just racists :bag:

I am not sure if this has been mentioned as an exploit/glitch yet, but in Riverwood, you have that elven dude that can train for archery as well as be a companion. You can train with him 5 times/level. Anyway, train with him and then while the menu is still up, you can offer to switch gear around and just get all your gold back. If one were to want to power level archery, it would be very easy to do that. But then, that could already be mentioned here.

ETA he needs to be your traveling buddy for it to work, as far as I can see.
