General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

I am not sure if this has been mentioned as an exploit/glitch yet, but in Riverwood, you have that elven dude that can train for archery as well as be a companion. You can train with him 5 times/level. Anyway, train with him and then while the menu is still up, you can offer to switch gear around and just get all your gold back. If one were to want to power level archery, it would be very easy to do that. But then, that could already be mentioned here.ETA he needs to be your traveling buddy for it to work, as far as I can see.
Also there's a glitch (on the 360, at least) you can exploit to get your 5000g back from buying your house in whiterun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPdr_3w8rcQ

You can do this with anyone that is capable of both training and joining you. I always make sure to get my 5 trainings in somewhere before Leveling up to the next level. It makes a big difference level 20-30 for your character.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned how if you go to an unreachable peak/rock, then the "enemies" run away rather then stand there and get merc-ed. (Well most of them)

Anyone have any private rules of the road?Me -1. Slaughter any Thalmor you see. 2. Run from giants.
I don't pass by a giant without killing them. They have a lot of good stuff on them usually. And if they have a chest near their camp that thing is usually loaded with goodies. Granted I am like level 36 with an ebony bow, a ring and some gauntlets that give extra bow damage, and some glass arrows. It doesn't take much to take them down anymore.

I'm lvl 22 and I agree with DP :scared:

So no tips on staying healthy at all? Sleep/eat regularly? Any cure disease spells in this game?

Also, is there a book of alchemical recipes either in the college or published online somewhere? Speaking of college, in Oblivion it was stacked with enchanting alters, alchemy tables, and also somewhere you could create your own spells. Is that in the college at Winterhold?

I have werewolf blood (Companions Quest) in me so I am immune to all diseases

If you are looking for something to do with the toe's:
Giant's Toe + Wheat = $

Small spoiler about gods

No idea if doing stuff for the good ones gets you anything, but bowing down to the evil one gets you some pretty sweet rewards. One gets you a book that gives you +5 to every attribute in one of 3 categories.

Picking the game up tonight.

I asked this a few days after release and will ask again now that many of you have logged more playing time.

Can one play through the game without doing all the magic/spells type stuff?

The first time I asked everyone said you can, but I am seeing now the majority of people are discussing the magic type stuff.

Easily. Some of the strongest characters can be non magical. Some suggestions are a thieve/assassin build, a tank build or you can be like a dual wielder or sword/shield.If you like to sneak and use archery you can become pretty powerful by putting perks into both, add some into some armor and the rest maybe into enchanting and smith and your good to go.For tank, just go straight out warhammer/greatsword etc and pump perks into heavy armor/two handed and you can go around swatting creatures. You can also use a shield or two swords and make kinda a light knight build. Block can become very powerful in the game if perked up.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've always been a gamer, but just never got into the fantasy type games with elves/wizards/magic spells, etc...

Not that theres anything wrong with them, just ain't my cup of tea. But this game does look/sound fun. I mean, I am sure I'll dabble in the magic stuff just to try it out, but like I said, never was really into those type of games. Always wanted a game with a big world like this but ala more realistic. Like a Braveheart/Knights of the Round Table type stuff. But without the magic and stuff. Guess this'll have to do. Excited to check it out.

I'd say that's more because it's fun and there's more to discuss. Playing a tank is pretty straight-forward. But I am thinking about doing an orc 2-handed guy some time in the future. I think it definitely looks playable.
Berzerker mode is awesome. At level 43 my 2 handed is almost 90, one handed about 37 through reading and training only, over 50 on both destruction and restoration and around 60 at archery. I'm having a blast switching through everything as needed and running through Frost Trolls with my 105 Damage hammer never gets old.

The magic in this game isn't nearly as "nerdy" as other games like this I've played. I generally play exactly how to describe but I really like dabbling in magic in this game.

Favorite Perks:

Impact: A must have magic perk. The ability to stagger with 2 handed destruction spells. You can slow down almost anything coming at you.

Power Shot: Similar effect with the bow. Staggers almost everything 50% of the time. Just enough time to drop another arrow in them

Also recommend upgrading all 5 perks in whatever weapon/armor you usually wear. It adds 20% every 20 levels, so you deal double damage and have double armor rating when all is said and done.

No spells, but there are alchemy tables and enchanting altars all over. Many of the Jarls have a mage who will have both in his room. In the mage college you don't have to wait to get the archmage's room unlocked, there is one of each on the second floor of one of the side rooms. Don't recall which side, but it's the one that the Destruction trainer has a room on the ground floor of.

I'm a level 14 and I just picked up an ebony bow off of some dude in a dungeon. This thing is off the hook! I took out 3 frost trolls in the labrynth place with a couple of shots and some fire. I've also just recently discovered the fun of blowing skeletons apart with firebolt.

Works on Dragon bodies too.

With Fortify 2H (+32% 2H) Gauntlets added to my Legendary (with +20% smithing buff) Deadric Hammer and 2H perks, the base damage is up to 146. Through level 36, the only spell I've used is Healing. Whatever I hit, I destroy.

I really want to be able to resurrect a dead giant. Take one of those big bastards into a bandit camp with me.

You can! There is a master level conjuration spell called dead thrall; "Reanimate a dead body permanently to fight for you. Only works on people and target must be level 40 or below."Currently working my way toward this. Would be hilarious having that guy bounce around behind you go into Jarl courts, the college of magic, etc.eta: well, maybe it wouldn't work on giants. Says "only works on people" Damn.

I just had a real test to my "Kill all Thalmor on sight" rule.

I was in Markath. In the Jarl's palace, of all places.

A group of 3 Thalmor are there.

:itchy trigger finger:

I decide to talk to them. Yep, typical Thalmor d-bags.

They ask me to break into some old guy's house to find evidence of Talos worship.

I agree.

They thank me and turn to leave.

Then I put an arrow in each one of their heads.

The Markath guards were not pleased. They attacked, I yielded, and they charged me 1000 gold.

I'm here to tell you that it was worth it.

So where are you guys finding all this awesome Daedric/Ebony/etc stuff? I've found some decent items, but nothing spectacular as of yet. Is it because I haven't done a dungeon in a while? I've been doing lots of quest lines (Thieves Guild, Mages College, Main quest, etc.) but haven't finished any all the way through yet, and because of that I haven't popped down into any dungeons recently. Maybe I have to take on some of those side quests I have for clearing out this crypt and that barrow, etc?

I didn't find mine, I leveled my smithing up and made it

Same. But I have started to see more Ebony armor and weapons around in dungeons once I hit level 30 or so.

I haven't gone looking, but I'm sure the UESP Wiki (Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages) and the Elder scrolls Wikia have charts to show what you can make from a given ingredient, or what it takes to make a given potion.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have the web program updated where you can enter all your ingredients and it'll tell you everything you can make.

Just google "skyrim alchemy" and you should be able to find it pretty quick. I'm trying to avoid using those sources right now for much more than finding out how to avoid a bug, or making sure I'm not losing a quest line when I kill someone, that sort of thing.

I decided to restart my character the other night. When I was messing around with smithing, alchemy and enchanting I flew through about 10-15 levels without doing any training, and afterwards decided that was probably a mistake. Plus I wanted to take back a few perks I wish I'd spent differently now.

I'm so confused on my perks. I'm only level 7, but so far I'm at 31 Destrucion, 23 light armor, 21, archery, 18 one handed, 16 conjuration(the battleaxe looks cool) 21 restoring...and i forget the rest. I'm just so spread out that I'm not really good enough at one thing. HEEEELPPPP GUIDE ME!!!
What do you want to focus on? Just save up some perks until you figure out what style you really want to play. From the looks of it you look to be trending towards magic. Maybe Destruction/Conjuration build with either perks into light armor or alteration (for magical armor spells)

I really like magic. However, I run out of magicka quickly right now and end up having to switch to an axe quite often. I also snipe guys with arrows before engaging.
Then here are some perks for you. Some of them you can't get yet, but you will want to work towards them eventually.Destruction:Any Destruction perk that cuts the cost in half. The dual-casting Destruction. The dual-casting causes people to Stagger.Bonus to (favorite type of damage, I suggest shock or flame, or even both).Archery:Bonus to damage (just spend 1 there until you get the two after it)Zoom in when drawn bow.Time slows when zoomed in.Restoration:Work your way up the right side towards Magicka Regens 25% faster and the second level of it, 50% faster.Conjuration:Work your way up to the second perk for casting is half cost... as that will make Soul Trap half cost. Spoiler to explain why that is a good thing.
Easy way to make money is enchanting any weapon before you sell it, and that requires souls. Fear enchants give a good price, I think Absorb Health was giving even better. Even at low levels, a 10 coin iron dagger that sells for 5 can be turned into a 250 coin dagger that sells for 125. It also levels your enchantment very quickly. I throw a soul trap on pretty much anything non-human that I fight, and carry around large numbers of soul gems for them to go into.
For armor perks, only go for them if you are actually wearing armor. I hit level 25 and pretty much didn't wear armor as a mage/archer because I had much better items that were non-armor that gave magicka regen and lowering destruction magick costs. If you do a lot of archery while sneaking for the backstab bonus damage, you could work up the sneak tree as well to get to extra bonus damage there, though I haven't really found a need myself.

Spoiler for a fairly easy to get item that helps your selling prices.

From Riften's stable, go down the hill. Just pass the two guard towers is a little dirt road on the right climbing a hill, with what looks like a brick wall at the top. There's an altar of Zenithos there with an amulet that gives +10% on prices. Combined with the Thieves Guild armor's hood you can earn in Riften that'll give you a 20% break on prices. Also, that altar will give you yet another 10% bonus that lasts for 8 hours.
