General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (3 Viewers)

Sorta want to be a dark elf necromancer. zombies kick ###.
The zombies are much cooler in this game. Instead of being summoned out of thin air, the spell animates corpses back to life. They're pretty tough too (so far).
in my quick read of the guide, I saw that. any dead body = potential zombie. Can you zombi-fy animals too? Zombie horses and birds and stuff, That's be neat.

I'm crafting stuff right now. Made a new set of leather armor for myself.

Does anyone know how to make raw IRON ORE into usable iron ingots?

I haven't tried that. There were plenty of rat corpses but I never zombied one. Hmmm....

How is the control? Did they finally fix the weird 3rd person where it looked like your character runs on ice and the world is projected behind him?

What would you say the "re-vamped" control are similar to?

How many zombies, skeletons and other creatures can you summon/conjure at once? Can you have an undead mob entourage protecting you in dungeons?

If you talk to the Smith in Riverwood and ask to do some work, he'll give you all the materials to do a number of smith tasks. It's a quick and free way to raise your Smithing skill.

I can confirm that storekeepers will buy stolen merchandise this time around. Even merchandise stolen from their own store.

The controls are very similar to what I remember of Oblivion. 3rd person view looks way better though.

I wonder if my wife has any idea what she is doing to our marriage by picking this up for me?
It's a devious plot. Start hiding money (less $65, of course).I was thinking about getting this as the draw is way too strong, but as of 15 minutes ago I am now working all weekend. :kicksrock:

I haven't played a video game in over three years. I got really caught up in Morrowind, I'm talking real bad. I'd get home from work at 5:30pm, turn on my XBox, and the next thing I knew, the sun was coming up. That went on for 2 solid months and I caught hell from the wife.

Reading these reviews really, really tempts me into jumping in again. Thinking about rolling the dice.

Took a break for a few hours. When I get back I plan on searching out the Bard College that a guy told me about in an inn.

Just started this (PS3). Thinking I might end up buying the 360 version and selling my PS3 copy though. It's a bit...laggy at times.

I guess I'm the only one playing a kitty cat for their first play-thru, eh? Just got to the first town (Riverwood or something) and got a quest to retrieve a golden claw. Gonna go try that, but man, it's been a long week and I'm exhausted. Thinking of just going to be now and waking up at 7am to get a solid 11 hours in tomorrow before the Oregon game.

GB having a wife who is also a gamer who is on-board with this. She'll play WoW while I'm knee-deep in Skyrim! :pickle:

Did anyone choose to go with the rebel in the opening quest?

Update:

Finally made it to Solitude and the Bard's College.

Fun things along the way -

- You can forget the monster equity of Oblivion. If you come across a giant and you are too dumb to run, he will hit you once with his club and you will die. Fortunately they aren't that fast and have really bad reaction time.

- You can turn dead animals into zombies. I was attacked by a sabertooth cat. A tough battle ensued but I won. Then I remembered JTG asking about reviving animals and viola! Zombie sabertooth cat.

In hindsight I would have, but I was all freaking out trying to get away from the dragon that I charged at the door and it happened to be the door with the Imperial guy, so I went with him.

I went with the rebel guy. Not sure how it differs from the other but
I now seem to be on a quest to join the rebels. Wonder if it is different if you go the other route.
Wondering how you get the raw materials to smith stuff - do I have to go mine ore somewhere (if so, how?) and kill some cows for leather straps?

Yes. Yes it is.
You go on a quest to join the Imperials. Imagine that!

UPDATE: there may be consequences to theft
I knocked off a house when I was in Riverwood. Then I left and went on a bunch of adventures. After a few days I returned o merch and use the smithy and a "Hired Thug" approached in the streets to "teach me a lesson." After I diced him up, I found a contract from the people whose house I knocked off. They hired him to rough me up. :lmao:

Some dungeons are mines. You need a pickaxe to mine the ore though. Then you need to find a smelter to refine the ore into ingot form. Some merchs will also have ingots for sale in their "Misc" menu.As for leather, you can make that from animal skins using a tanner. It's a good excuse to go hunting. Merchs will also sell various animal skins.

Update on the Bard's College, in case you're wondering whether to go there.

I was hoping it would be a new guild/profession line like the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood, but I don't think so. They give you a very long quest to be admitted to the college. After finishing it they admit you to the college and say that the various professors have quests for you, but don't direct you to anyone in particular. Also the Bard's College quests don't have their own category in your stats. Completing them is registered as a "Misc quest." It seems like Skyrim has the same four guilds as Oblivion.

So much for my dreams of playing Bard's Tale like magic tunes.

Ugh, F'n Steam. I can't even play today.

I hit the "Play" button on Steam and I get the little window "Preparing to launch The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" and then it just hangs there.

I'm playing as an Altmer wizard, focusing on destruction and conjuration. LOVE the dual-casting... the fire atronoch makes for a very formidable ally at my level (5-6).

:goodposting: on watching where you just run into guns blazing. Saw a mastadon icon on the map and the giant knocked me about 1,000' into the air with one shot.

Question for the PS3 players: is there a way to make the objective of the miscellaneous quests appear on your compass? It seems that even when I select one of the objectives, the icon that shows up on compass is for the primary quest. All I've been able to figure out is to add a marker to the map and follow that, but it's pretty useless once I get into the town where I need to find someone.

Is it downloading the patch or something?Mine sat on that for a while (about half an hour) while it did stuff. Eventually it stopped though and let me play. All in all for a D1 Elder Scrolls release its remarkably stable...Hey Fly does that Bard thing have anything to do with the guy who was in love with the shopkeeper in riverwood?I helped the other guy hoping he would , you know, be grateful and be a bit reasonable with a discount on the archery lessons but the bastage didnt bat even an eyelid. Hope he realises that after I'm a ninja marksman his days are numbered..

Actually, I was wrong about this. I could have sworn I was able to sell stolen goods yesterday, but it was a definite no-go today. My bad.

:goodposting:I'm playing as a Dunmer thief, who takes cheap shots with his bow and falls back on destruction when combat ensues. (I know a wood elf would have been statistically a better choice for this build, but I like the way dark elves look). Dual-casting is awesome. It tears through my magicka but it seems to deal out a lot of damage. And it looks cool.

Yes, you can definitely do this. I just used it find the house of the kid that hooks you up with the Dark Brotherhood. My guess is that you need to un-select the objective the main quest.

Yea, the sleezy musician in Riverwood is the guy who told me about the college, but any tavern musician will tell you about it.I also helped the elf hunter. While he doesn't give a discount on Archery lessons, he is in your debt and if you get into a fight he'll immediately join your side.

Update:

- Took out a nest of vampires. The Master Vampire was the toughest hombre I've fought yet (outside a giant).

- Contracted Sanguinare Vampiris for my efforts. I'm pretty sure this works like Oblivion: once you get it you have a couple nights to drink a Cure Disease potion or you turn into a vampire.

It's been one night so far. I'm leaning towards turning. This character is developing into a dual-sword, poison-loving assassin type. Should probably seek out the Dark Brotherhood soon.

After building a decent base of skills (Archery, Light Armor, Conjuration, Smithing), I've focused on Sneak and One-Handed.

- In Sneak I've chosen a couple ranks of Stealth, then Backstab (X6 damage) and Deadly Aim (X3 with a bow).

- In One-Handed I took a couple ranks of Armsman, and then 1 rank of Double Flurry for wielding twin swords.

I should probably start focusing on alchemy too to develop nasty poisons.

Any PS3 players having issues with the controls during an intense fight?

When I maneuver around I always end up pushing the L3 and R3 (the analog sticks) buttons and switch to sneak and normal and (most annoying of all) I'll suddenly pop out to 3rd person view. It's been driving me insane.

Yeah, I'm doing the same thing. Hopefully once I get more used to the controls I'll stop.

A message from Bethesda to 360 users

http://kotaku.com/5858743/bethesda-working-on-skyrim-graphics-problems-on-xbox-advises-not-installing-yet

If you want to get the best graphics out of your Xbox 360 play-through of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim you may want to hold off on installing it to your console's hard drive. At least for now, developer Bethesda says.
ETA: It's not a major deal so may or may not be worth an uninstall and playing from disk. It involves the textures in the game. For example, see here or here.
Bethesda is kind of infuriating when it comes to this stuff. Man.

Same here. Not sure why I keep doing this.So far I've taken one level of the Sneak perk, and then got the ones for sneak attacks with backstabs and bows. I also got the Destruction perks for novice spells and dual-wielding. And one level of the first Archery perk. I still have a couple of perks to use, but I haven't decided what to use them on yet. I really want to be able to zoom in with my bow, but I need to improve my archery to be able to get that one.

Had my first random dragon encounter (not part of quests), was pretty intense and a tough fight, was a frost dragon. Fight took about 10 or so minutes, lots of hiding and taking advantage of openings.

What a great game.

This is money, IMO. I have the same type of build. Got a fire-enchanted bow with the 3X damage Sneak perk and the eagle eye Archery perk (the zoom-in ability), and I was able to take out an entire fort by sniping each guard from the surrounding hills.

Vampire update -

Vampirism is similar to Oblivion. Each night you don't feed you grow more vampiric, which means stronger effects and additional powers. Weaknesses also grow. The first day you have -15% health, magicka and stamina. It grows from there to (I think) 25% and 35%. You also look worse and worse. If you don't feed for 3 nights townspeople will attack you (found this out the hard way. Imagine map-jumping to a town only to have the entire population begin attacking you. :lmao: )

Powers (as I recall) -

100% disease resistant

100% poison resistant

+25% sneak ability

+25% cold resistant

+25% fire WEAK (this grows when you don't feed, up to 100% at full vampire)

You also get a 60 second night vision power/spell

A charm/calm people power

And a moderately powerful animate zombie power.

Despite that list looking impressive, I don't know if it's worth having such drastically reduced health & stuff during the day. The need to feed also quickly becomes a pain in the butt.

Is it sad that im on a date night in the movie theatre with my wife and all I can think about is this game.

Anyway, what is the deal with the constellation tree? I have seen some walk thrus but none mention them. Im a level 4 but have not distributed any perks yet. I have increased my health and magic once. My stamina shows 120 but I have not increased that so not sure how that works.

Any help on this leveling stuff is appreciated. I just finished dragon rising if that helps. I think I'm going to find the magic college next though and go off the main story for a bit.

Interesting. But no dice. The vamps I wiped out lived in a cave.
