Archery is kinda slow-leveling. I use it on most dungeon crawls where there's a few guys and I have it up to maybe 55 or so.
:goodposting: To put it in perspective, I've used archery as my main combat skill since the very early levels. I would guess that 95% of my kills are with a bow. Despite that near-exclusive reliance on ranged combat, I don't think my archery got to 100 until I was at or very close to level 50. And I probably bought five or so of those levels from the trainer in the Flaggon. This skill levels slowly, but if it didn't, you'd be way overpowered in the middle-levels.

I used Illia once, in addition to the quest where you pick her up. She more than holds her own.
She's a mage? Haven't used her yet. I have used Marcurio who is a mage, he was pretty good. I like Mjoll, she's a pretty good tank, after you upgrade her armor, plus she's happy to carry your stuff and loves a good fight.

finally got started last night. Went around for like an hour and a half and still don't have a clue what I'm doing really. I made some vegetable soup though.

Yah, she is. Does some nice damage and doesn't totally blow you as a sneaky character.
As I've mentioned I like Lydia. As a player she reminds me of me. Rush in and let the bodies fall where they may. A little snarkiness for personality. I am kind of hating they didn't activate the marriage thing for her. It's all there so maybe later. And Lydia sneaks just don't let her spot any enemies close by she can kill or sneaking is right out. I think though you can become a bit dependent on these sidekicks. I was noticing last night some holes in my fighting that aren't as evident when you stand back and stick enemies with arrows or hit them with magic while, in this case, Lydia gets up close and personal. My timing is at times pretty crappy when in close. I am endeavoring to fix that.

I still don't get what is so great about having Lydia or any companion at all. Maybe I'm greedy, but I like having all the kills to myself.

I stumbled upon a talking dog last night but I seem to have lost him, I'm guessing he'll show up again if I pursue that questline.

Carry twice as much loot, get a hand with those kills especially early on. For me I couldn't take out Sahloknir in the Blade in the Dark quest without Lydia. I tried several times. I am a lower level character though just got to 12. I was at 10 when we killed him.

They are in the game to be used. Sometimes I use a tank follower and sometimes I use a range follower and melee the fights.

So do you find switching easy? I have read that sometimes they will refuse to rejoin you.

So far no problems. I have used most of these at least once. 2 housecarls- a bunch from doing the companion quest line and a few more from other quest. I have also hired a couple to try out.

2 3 questions:

1 - The Jarl (sp?) said i could buy a house in Whiterun. Thats cool, but how do i buy a house?

2- How do you guys get people and animals to follow you? I'm at level 13 and have been in and out of plenty of towns now. No one has ever offered to follow me though. Beginning to get a bit self conscious, maybe it's me?

3 - Is there any way to kill a giant in a straight fight? I managed to get one by taking the high ground at night, sneaking, and lobbing a few dozen arrows into him. but any time i try to face off with one, they send into low earth orbit

1. Go up the steps behind the Jarl and the dude there will sell you the Breezeway for $5000. It is on the first level of whiterun on the road between the smithing shop and the alchemy/general goods store.2. Dog I found last night was outside Falkreath. You can buy a horse at the stables for 1000 or so.

3. Don't try fighting a giant till at least level 30 I would say.

You need 5000 in coins for a house. You ask the bald guy up by the Jarl, he will give you a key. You can also ask him to furnish the house for you for extra coin. The house is the house right next to the blacksmith as you enter town.

Talk to more people, you will find some that will go accompany you.

As for the Giants, I only engaged 2 of them. One killed me, the other (actually two of them at the same time), I ran away from.

not sure how much we need to spoiler text, but:
1. Talk to the Jarl's advisor, the weasely looking guy that stands next to him on his throne (he's also often hanging out at the table out on the balcony, head up the stairs behind the Jarl, through the door and out to the end of the balcony). he'll sell you one for 5,000

2. Continue the main quest. Once you kill the first dragon, you'll gain a title and a "servant". I'd imagine there's any number of other ways to gain them as well.

Whats the most amount of people/dogs you can have accompany you at once?
1 person, 1 animal
I'm pretty sure you can have a horse and the dog with you at the same time. Also, you get people who sometimes follow you on miniquests. We went to look for some guys daughter as part of one of the dibella quests and it was me, my follower, girls dad, horse, and dog. My follower was summoning a familiar and I was summoning Frost Atronachs. As soon as we saw an enemy, I just stood to the side and watched the 7 of them house some bandits.

1 cup?
:lmao:You can get more followers, but it happens at higher levels. At one time I had all of these helping in a fight -1. The wood elf archer from Riverwood2. The ghost of Lucian LaChance3. Shadwomere4. Odahviing! We were unstoppable. I'd enter a bandit fort and kill maybe one guy before the whole place was dead.

I am constantly losing companions to the point that I no longer even bother with them

Lydia and 2 from the college

I don't know how you could take one out toe to toe. I either hit them with arrows from a good distance or ask the mammoths to help me out(wood elf).

I got Lydia killed way too quickly :kicksrock:
I was beginning to think she was indestructible. I mean I have seen her take shot after shot from dragons and we walk away fine. How did you get her killed?
I have accidentally killed her twice. The only way she dies and won't respawn is if you kill her. Once She stepped right in front of me when I was trying to shoot an Ice Wolf to capture it's soul, and the other time I used the unrelenting force shout to make some space and she was in the path and had little health left...boom dead. She had too much of my stuff so I had to revert to an earlier save and redo what I just did. I think tonight I may take all my stuff and kick her to the curb for Mjol.

I had a pretty odd bug last night when I was leaving Whiterun. I'll put it in spoilers since it involves the main quest

As soon as Lydia and I loaded up outside of Whiterun the skeleton of the first dragon we killed from the main quest fell from the sky. At first I thought it was a new dragon encounter, but it was just the dead skeleton that was previously laying on the ground near the West Watchtower. I was hoping it was have its loot still on board, but it wasn't. Curious to see if that skeleton will remain 10 feet from the gates of Whiterun for the rest of the game, or if it'll go back to its previous resting place.

can you not alt the controller to make the dpad be the item/spell thing? Hitting a button to then go directional is a stupid extra step.

this happens all the time

I've killed her multiple times (I reload when it happens). Almost without fail, it is due to her stepping in front of my arrow when I am sniping in sneak mode. She simply can't survivie that type of damage. As for the other comment, if she dies at someone else's hand, she will respawn?? I figured dead was dead. I wonder how many battles I may have unecessarily re-fought because I didn't want to lose my pack mule?

Does it matter where you hit an enemy with an arrow (or sword even)? I mean, does a head shot do more damage than a body shot?

It is my understanding that a head shot does a lot more damage. Experience would seem to concur with that.

I have yet to be launched by a giant. I've seen all the videos, I hear other people talking about it, but I've been clubbed by a giant on more than one occasion, and it just takes a chunk of health off.

Maybe it only launches you if the club hit kills you?

I'm a mage. If a giant connects with me it launches me into orbit.

Really? I've read the opposite but don't know for sure.
Early on, I was aiming for the head a lot (based on playing other shooters). I noticed no change in the damage factor whatsoever. So I stopped even bothering to try for headshots. I'm dubious that it causes more damage. Maybe it's time to try again next time I run in to something tough, like a Draughr Overlord or whatever those things are called.

I think the way it works is that if your follower goes down to 0 health, they kneel down and rest or whatever and recover. If you do the damage that takes them down to 0, though, they don't. They also don't if they take some massive hit of damage that puts them down to -50 or -100 or something. So a big hit from a dragon or giant can kill your follower as well. And then once they're dead, they're dead.
Ok, that's what I thought. Thanks.

Left/right the d pad are your two presets. Up is your favorites. Just favorite stuff and you won't need to bother with opening the menu for most things.

I still suck at backstabbing with daggers - I never get it right. I can take down almost anything with my bow & arrows when I'm sneaking, so I don't really need it, but it would be nice to see some of these sweet cutscenes you guys are talking about. The only ones I see are when I'm swinging the Mace of Molag Bal around for some one-handed experience on lesser foes.

I hate followers. I accidentally killed Lydia in a house doing a quest and when I came back to get my stuff thatshe was carrying, it was all gone. And my last save that wasn't autosaved was from 10+ hours ago, so no way was I going to reload that one. So my stuff was permanently gone.

So I no longer travel with anyone.

I would love Shadowmere though. Is he found during the main quest or a side quest?

About 3/4 way through the Dark Brotherhood you get him.

Yeah you sometimes pick up more temporarily for quests. And I don't think the horse counts as part of your party so you can still have a dog. But my understanding is in general play you can only actively select one of each.

Hmmm, I really wasn't planning on doing that quest line. Dilemma.

Is there a downside to stealing a horse? I came across one at a bandit camp that was... recently abandoned and had the option to "steal" it, but didn't want to be accused of being a horse thief and rounded up like it was a western.
I stole one and as soon as I got off it, it split.
This. I've never gotten in trouble for snagging an unattended horse, but as soon as you jump off, it'll wander away.

that makes me think of another question, how exactly do i get the animals to help me out? I'm a wood elf and i see that power in the magic menu. Just not sure what to do with it from there. I've been focused on Sneak Arrow attacks and two handed blasting, so i'm basically a V when it comes to magic etc.thx to everyone else for the answers to 3 ?s

You equip it and use it just like a dragon shout. On the pc it's z.
