Is there a trick to lockpicking? Cuz I suck at it.
Use a light touch. If you start feeling any resistance, back off and try another spot. The easier the chest, the bigger the zone in which the lock will budge at all but even for Master-level locks, there's no more than 6-8 zones so you should be able to identify the general area where to unlock it within a few lockpicks.
ya also mainly for locks lower than master and expert you can try a light tap in the middle position, 45 degree position (both sides) and 90 degree position, usually you can get the general area with these spots and work from there.

Thanks matts. I was going to buy a new one once my CC closed but it sounds like this game should not be played on the PS3. It might be time to switch to Xbox. But then I need a new Bly ray and that sucks.
Yah, it's a tough call. I was on the fence between the 360 and the PS3 when I bought at Thanksgiving because all of the bad reports of the game on the playstation. So far, the PS3 is working out with just smatterings of lag/freezing problems. But I could see a once bitten, twice shy attitude from your perspective.
I have been thinking for a while about getting this game and I only have a PS3...is it not worth getting for that system?

I have it for PS3 and its runs great most of the time. there is an occasional load freeze where you need to reset if all the loading lights on the PS3 go dormant. I haven't had a stuttering problem like some others, although you prob should wait when it autosaves before walking around. I'm now at level 47ish with almost a 10MB save file, the large save files were giving people stuttering issues but there's a patch to fix it coming out. Unless you have another system I think the PS3 is fine from my experiences. Mine is the old fat PS3 by the way.

Before I even really had any idea of the scope of the game, or what I wanted to focus on in terms of evolving my character, I ended up becoming really adept at lock picking by accident. I happened to get a few locks open with relatively few broken picks early, and saw that I leveled up quickly as a result. The key from there was realizing that you can save your game at any moment. So I went and found a few expert or adept locks, and saved right before my attempt. Then I tried opening the locks and would load my game back up after five or six broken picks, until I was able to open even the expert locks. You level up super quickly and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

By the time I got to the Dwemer museum I had such high lockpicking skills that I was able to ransack that place and come up on tons of great weaponry and armor on the super cheap.

I have the old fat one too. After reading the below I had another question--is the game played online? If I didnt wire my PS3 would I be able to avoid these issues?TIA

One thing that helps is I turned off Autosaves and turned off the Internet connection to my PS3. So it doesn't perform those checks.

I have 2 dungeons that had master locked chests. What skill level am I going to have to get to for a legitimate chance to open them? On one of them I wasted about 30 lockpicks trying to pick it.
Umm, around level 30 or so you should be able to crack them with a little patience.Just buy up all the lockpicks you can, fences usually have a ton. I think I run around with 400 or so even now. You gain experience by breaking them to, so the only thing you are damaging is your psyche by not cracking them right away.

what's the actual technique you use? You turn the pick (this is the thing that breaks, right?) first, and then turn the stick thingy in the same direction you previously turned the pick? Early on I had some success not moving the pick at all and just opening the lock with the right stick, but I'm guessing that was more an exception than the rule.
Technique? LMFAO says it best:Check it out Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle yeah Do the wiggle man Yeah I'm sexy and I know it

Tried to but got sidetracked by a butterfly or something.

Once you join the guild "fences" open up which are shady merchants that will buy stolen items from you. The first one you meet is in the bar in the Ratways in Riften. Tonilla, she likes to hide in the dark.

Does this spell "clairvoiance" really work well enough to buy? I can see how it would be useful.
I like it a lot, especially when I lose track of which direction I was going in a dungeon or if I am looking for something obscure.I got use to just casting it as I ran around to help level illusion. There are a couple places where I ran back and forth so many times that the Donnie Darko trail is now permanently glitched into the game.

Name for mine is Elbryan

In other news: Remember how it wouldn't let me kill the damn kid, Skuli, at the inn I ransacked? Little ##### took a contract out on me. Why can he do that and I can;t just go kill his scrawny ###?!?!?!?!?!?! Ugh. I enjoyed the 400 gold I got from the hired thugs though

What did everyone name their character?I named mine "Drago".
The same name I have given every character in every RPG I have ever played, Loketar. This name goes back to the old Case's Ladder moniker I had during the Warcraft II days. I've used it ever since.

For this kind of stuff I use a couple of different Latin names. This time I went with Cuspis. It is the pointed end of the spear.

I just cleared out the silent moons camp. I go back to Dragonsreach to collect my bounty from Proventus, and everyone there immediately tries to kill me when I walk in. ANybody know what I did or what is going on?

ETA: I have no bounty in Whiterun.

No clue. I just finished that quest last night and everything went smooth. You must have done something before leaving on the quest.Isnt the forge up there cool? I swear there is something special about it. But I was happy with the book that gave you the extra smithing skill.

I had the same thing happen when I first tried that quest. I was a noob at the time, and in the area of the camp, there was some small, other camp nearby just over a stone bridge I believe that I'd cleared out. I remember the last guy in the camp running for his life and thinking, "huh, that's weird". I'm pretty sure in my case, I mistook a random camp of non-aggressive folks for bandits and wiped them out thinking it was part of the silent moon crew.

So I'm sure that it has been mentioned, but I will bring it up again.

How do you get an animal companion again?
AFAIK, there's only one that you can get and he's associated with a questline. He's not really a designated companion, more that he tags along until you finish his quest. So some people just don't finish his quest and keep him hanging around. You can also buy a horse, I suppose, which is kinda like having an animal companion when you're outdoors. And you can get animal familiars but they won't stay with you.
There is a dog you can get for 500 gold (Vigilance) and there are also 2 stray dogs that will become a companion after talking to them. Meeko is another dog who you can recruit.
I know for a fact I killed a stray dog by mistake because I thought it was wolf... and it was dark ... and I didnt check until after it was slain... :bag:
Vigilance is a canine follower that can be purchased outside the city of Markarth, just inside the stables.
If I get a chance to play tonight, I will make this one of the first things I do.
Yeah, until you run into someone wanting to kill you, but you kill him and take his sword, only to find that sword has crazy value, and you go to sell it but the shopkeeper doesn't have enough gold to give you, so you mill about chopping wood to pass some time, then get overloaded and you have to walk really slow, then you find the guy to sell the wood to, you sell it then a dragon appears and you fight it and get some other goodies and then you take them to your house to store them and then you go back the next day to sell that sword and get good money for it, but then you feel as you must buy a dining room set for your house with that new found money so you go to find the bald dude to buy it from and spend an hour trying to find him, and when that is done it is 1:00am real life time and you need to go to bed. You lay in bed for a few minutes and then BAM it hits you. THE DOG! I FORGOT ABOUT THE DOG!
:lmao:

Good stuff Cope
Update:Went and got the dog on my lunch break

:nerd:

I'm totally ####ed. This sucks so much. There's absolutely nothing I can do now because every load point is just people in whiterun trying to kill me....any ideas?

ETA: I now have 80 bounty. Why can;t they just arrest me like usual? Why do they all try to kill me every time I do anything now?

You don't have previous autosaves?

Do you have your weapon drawn?

Just took a look and can't find any associated bugs. It almost sounds like they think you are a vampire or something.

sheath your weapon and they should drop aggro with a bounty of 80. If you dont have a weapon out equip yours then sheath it and they should offer to arrest you. I think

Ok: I got rid of my bounty by fast traveling elsewhere as soon as I could, wandering around a while, fighting a dragon, and then going back. I got the "You have a bounty" thing and told him I was the Jarl's Thane. Guard said alrighty then have a good day.

Now I am going back up to dragonsreach to see if they still want to kill me for no reason.

They still want to kill me in there - with a sheathed weapon. Awesome. No idea what to do now.

On he plus side, found Lydia again. I had lost her.

Last night I was wandering on my way to Riften when I ran into one of those random encounters with a difficult enemy. I had to reload a previous save a couple times, once because I got killed and once because Janessa got waxed. So the third time I decide I'm really gonna sneak up on this dude slow and snipe his a**.

Well I sneak up to the location where the encounter had been spawning and see the heads of not one but three foes. Crap. So I sneak shot the first one and kill him, the other two don't seem to notice. Hmmmmm. I sneak shoot the second, same result, dead, and his remaining companion doesn't react. I put down the third and run over there to claim my hard fought loot only to find that these were Revelers who had apparently been having a keg party in a field! Oooops. :bag:

Apparently they were too drunk to notice their buddies taking arrows to the face.

I killed Farengar. Damn it. Didn't know he would die. Then Proventus, only he did that stunned cower thing where all his health is gone but he can't be killed. Then he stood up, said hello, and I told him I cleared out silent moon camp, so he paid me. I'm done for a while, gonna try and figure this out.
