General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (8 Viewers)

So decided I'd veg out with a couple hours on this tonight. Figured I'd be able to make some good progress. Learned the clear skies shout, made my way to the throat of the world, and then I ran into Paarthunax. He ####### blabbed on 45 minutes about some boring ### #### he could have explained in about 2 minutes.

You get the chance to kill him later. I didn't do it because I thought he'd be useful, but I'm seeing the light here.

Hey guys I see some of you talking alchemy so I thought I would ask: how do you do it? I've identified almost all my ingredients by consuming one of each but I can't figure out where to go from there.
Find an Alchemy table. They're all over the place. The easiest to find is in the Jarl's Hold in Whiterun. If you go into Dragonsreach, head up the stairs, and take a right once you get to the throne room, there's one in the mage's quarters. You can find them in pretty much any mage quarters, dungeons that involve spellcasters, the College, and a number of other places.Once you find one, you just mix ingredients. The way I've done it has been that I mix 2 ingredients that I know make a potion and a third wildcard. Generally, I try to use ingredients that I don't know many of the effects. Eventually, you'll find ingredients that share an effect and your character will "discover" that effect for that ingredients. Then thereafter, that new effect will show up when you view the ingredient. I've gotten 3 or 4 of the effects of pretty much all the ingredients I've found that way.
Thanks a lot, going to try this out tomorrow! This is such a deep game, I can't get over how much there is to do.
On a related note, Windhelm is the best place for enchanting stuff. In the market you have a full service smith (smelter included), another armor & weapons merch, some other merchs, and an alchemist's shop off to the side. Behind the open air weapons and armor merch is an enchanting table. It's just a short walk from the smith and you don't have to bother with load screens.

Main quest complete.

anyone else think the final battle was anticlimactic?
I've heard this, but I enjoyed it. Speaking of this -

Which questline is your favorite?

A - Main

B - Dark Brotherhood

C - Thieves Guild

D - Companions

E - Mage's College

F - Bard's College

G - Civil War

I've only done the first 3. While it feels unfair to say the main is the best (it is the most developed), that wasn't the case in Oblivion where the Dark Brotherhood was clearly the most fun.

Your opinion?

Yup. They didn't build up Alduin enough as a bad guy, IMO - you only hear about him in isolation a handful of times. Your character only meets him twice, IIRC, before you battle him on the top of the mountain, and one of those times he ends up saving you from execution. But, a weak main plot is a signature of Bethesda's so I didn't have many expectations along those lines going in.

Man am I loving this game. So far I am at level 10 and in the mid 30s in archery, one handed combat and stealth. Where or when do I start making some real gold? I have disenchanted some weapons but don't know the spell to enchant them so I can't sell them for big money and only have around 3k in gold so I can't even buy a house to store all my crap. Also where do I get a good bow that I can reload faster? I have an orkish bow now but want a better one it seems to take forever to notch an arrow. It's faster with the orkish bow than the old nord bow I had been using that I stole from one of the undead in Bleak Falls.

NOOB here. I loved FF7 when I was under, never liked the other RPG's like KOTOR and havent gotten into Mass Effect ever. I did love Fable but despised the sequals. Any chance Skyrim would be for me?

Anything good about Fable is done 10x better here.KOTOR is really the only other RPG I've ever gotten into besides the original Final Fantasy on NES.

Well, if you don't like some of the best RPG's of all time, it is unlikely that you will like this game either. This is a much more serious RPG than Fable.

thats my thinking, I am the sort of player who wants to play and hates long cinematic scenes in games, I take it Skyrim is filled with this right?

No not really. Obviously there are conversations you have to have to advance the game but it isn't full of cutscenes by any means.

Not cutscenes, but KOTOR wasn't overloaded with them either, and FF7 had a bunch, so I doubt this is your biggest problem with these games. There are still plenty of conversations and loading screens.

Not even a little bit. There's a few conversations you need to have (and you can blaze through them, too), but for the most part, no, no cut scenes.

But I did decapitate my first victim last night with a battle axe, and it showed it in a slow-mo close-up, which is nice.

Just keep plugging along. Eventually you'll start finding good loot that will allow you clean out merchants. Some people have posted that they never seem to have any money, but I found the opposite to be true. Then again, I never bought much.
I have disenchanted some weapons but don't know the spell to enchant them
You don't need a spell to enchant stuff. You just need a filled soul gem. You can find they lying around, or you can fill them yourself, which requires either the soul trap spell or a similar weapon enchantment.
so I can't sell them for big money
You might be disappointed in how little you get for most enchanted items. That is, until you start enchanting things with banish, at which point you'll be lighting your cigars with $100 bills and making it rain at the Winking Skeever.
and only have around 3k in gold so I can't even buy a house to store all my crap.
Make buying Breezehome (in Whiterun) your top priority for now. You should be able to scrape together 5K in relatively little time. Having a house does make life a lot easier.

For most people, damage is way more important that draw speed. Enemies can't attack you when they're dead.

If you're cash poor with no home, read up on how to start the dark brotherhood storyline. You can use the "Abandoned Shack" as a home for free until you get your funds right.

When you set up your home in Whiterun, do yourself a favor and install an enchanting table instead of alchemy lab because there is one right up the street.

Still kicking myself for not doing this, I just assumed I could install both.

The Companions storyline isn't very long and you can keep in the far bedroom downstairs. That way you have a small army guarding it. This is where I hide my hoard of daedra hearts.

The time it takes to draw a bow is dependent on the bow's weight. The lighter the bow the faster it will draw. But it is also true for normal bow types that the lighter the bow the less damage it does. There is a perk you can take to draw bows faster.

Pretty sure you don't have have the option to install an enchanting table. Alchemy is your only option for Whiterun's house.

Hmm, my memory has failed me then. I thought I remembered seeing in on the upgrade list and then it disappeared when I purchased the Alchemy lab. Guess I was wrong.

Money Making

For money making, there were some tips in this post.

Some additions for it. Banish is the best enchant for making money with, but you can't get it until higher levels. Paralyze is second best, and Absorb Health is probably third, but you may not find those until later as well. The best one I found that is available right away is Damage Stamina. Turn Undead is also good. Don't bother enchanting armor or clothing for cash, they aren't worth nearly as much.

A few more good ways to make cash. Go through every dialogue option when you talk to people. A lot of the time they will unlock an errand you can do that may net from 250 to 1000 coins, though sometimes you get items instead.

Just heading out into the wild and heading towards the compass indicator for any tower or campsite is likely to net you a bunch of bandits who you can wipe out and sell their gear for good money.

When you have done favors or missions for people, a lot of times items in their home will no longer be marked as stealing. Such as after you advance the main quest the first bit, most things in Dragonhome, the castle in Whiterun, can be taken and sold.

Speaking of advancing the main quest, take it far enough that you start fighting dragons. Dragon bones and scales you get from their bodies are worth a ton of money. And while they are good for crafting items if you ever max out your smithing, it's easy enough to find dragons and get more that it would stop you from selling some early. If you find some of the dragon nests that appear on the compass as their own icon, I find that if I wipe out the dragon there, then later fast travel back a month later or so, dragons tend to have returned to the spot. Sometimes even two of them at once at higher levels.

Finally, some potions are worth a ton of money and others not so much. Here is a link to a post I made with the most valuable potion types, along with the full list of ingredients you can make them with. Some of them can be created with really common ingredients, like blue butterfly wings and blue mountain flowers. Others can be created from ingredients that can frequently be bought for very cheap from alchemy shops and then combined to make a potion worth much, much more than the ingredients cost. You can also pick up a lot of the needed ingredients for them for free in the mage's college next to the alchemy station. As well as stealing them from people's rooms.

I really can't stress the insane amount of money you can make from alchemy. Early game I buy up pretty much any ingredient that costs less than 10 anytime I went near an alchemy shop. Then after a bit, any that costs less than 20. As your alchemy goes up, potion values go up, but the ingredients stay the same cost. So you can buy more and more expensive ingredients and still make money off the resulting potions.

Also, if you can make a potion that combines two of the effects in the list I gave, or that adds in an extra effect to any of them, the value of the potion will increase even higher. In typing this up, I googled and found this list of multi-effect potions, with ingredients required, sorted by value. Some of them have pretty easy to obtain ingredient lists.

If a person isn't making weapons, do the deadric hearts have value?
You can use them in Damage Stamina Regen potions which is normally a moderately valuable potion, but at low levels of alchemy selling the heart by itself would be worth more than the potion would. There are also a couple of quests that require them.

Greg is right about needing daedra hearts for quests. Hang on to a couple.

Also, do not sell every flawless ruby you come across. Keep on stored away someplace.

Thanks, how do you get the banish enchantment?

You can get a free house in whiterun.

In the tavern you can fight a girl (Uthgern or something) and then she can be a follower. Open her inventory to exchange items and you can take the keys to her house without theft or pickpocket risk.

Thanks, off to Whiterun as soon as the kids are done playing Skylanders.

Say what???Neither of these is the least bit realistic.

Benefits

A player's spouse will prepare one homecooked meal a day, which will boost health, stamina, and magicka regeneration for x amount of time.

Note that though there is a unique dialogue option for each spouse character when asked to prepare this meal, the item received will always be the same.

Spouses that are also followers can still follow you, and you can still exchange equipment and items with them.

Your spouse will occasionally surprise you with a gift.

Your spouse will set up a store "somewhere" and earn a cumulative 100 gold or more a day for you.

If your spouse moves in with you, they will purchase and sell general goods with you.

If your spouse is naturally a merchant, they will buy and sell the same goods they would normally. If not, they will sell miscellaneous goods and seemingly items you leave in their inventory.

This inventory is randomized and seems to reset once a day (along with the amount of gold your spouse has to offer).

Your spouse will not give you additional discounts for being a spouse, prices are still defined by speechcraft and perks.

Sleeping near to your spouse will give you the resting bonus "Lover's Comfort" for eight hours.

Does not stack with the same effect from the Lover's Stone.

This effect does stack with the Mage, Warrior and Thief stones though.

Does not work if you're a werewolf.

Your spouse will be semi-essential; the player's spouse may only be killed by the player.

 If you get married without already having a house, does your spouse have one that you share? - Yes

If you already have a house, do they just join you in yours? -You can choose wich one to live in

What does the bolded mean? I meant gold, she gives you 100 gold per day from her "sales"

For that matter, what does "home cooked meals" mean?- Bonus regens for chowing down on them

I found the one thing in the game I don't like. You can't fight when on a horse. I passed by some ritual stones yesterday on my way from whiterun to dawnstar. However, there were some mages there. As a Mage myself, I didn't have time to get off the horse, summon something and then blast with destruction. So I just sprinted right past them and was not able to get the location on the map. I think I'm starting Thieves guild tonight and maybe getting married while I'm at it. I find having finished the main quest, to be more at ease with whatever comes my way. Not sure why, but it was important for me to complete the main quest. Maybe bc it's my first RPG.

Question:

on the restoration perk tree the perk 'Recovery' says that magika regenerates 25% faster. Is that overall magicka, or just when using restoration spells?

That's one big thing I'm missing playing as a scrawny eleven mage. Next play through will be a meleer.

Oh I'm not questioning the fact that the game treats a spouse this way. As a married man, I'm saying that it's unrealistic that a spouse would be a financial gain and that you sleep better when she's nearby. It was sort of a joke.
