General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

Speaking of soul gems, I have Azura's Star, grands, greats, commons. Yet every time I pop a mage or even a bandit, it says I don't have a large enough soul gem to capture the soul. WTF, does any human take a Black or something?
Yes. Any humanoid soul can only be captured with a black soul gem (or the black version of Azura's Star -- which is why you definitely want to go that route in the quest where you get it).
Unfortunately, by the time I read that hint, that ship had long sailed. Makes no sense either. The harder route leads to the crappier result. Bleh. I mean, c'mon, if anyone should provide Black Souls, shouldn't it be a Deadra?????

Lydia just ####ed me from her grave.Trying to get married to that broad who hires the Dark Brotherhood to kill her ex.Go to the church and set things up, but every time I try to enter the church for the wedding...gd Lydia is there, on the ground, dead as ####. Everyone is all pissed off at me "oh, what did you do!!"
This is a known glitch. I think I read somewhere you can drag her away from the door but leave her in the building, reschedule the wedding and get past it that way.
That worked. Dig my ole lady's eyeliner :excited:

Well I am glad to help with true love.

Is it possible to buy a spycam in this game?

I was romping around Skyrim with Mjoll and figured I may as well double down and marry her as well. Her little fruity friend hadn't been around since he started kicking butt with me, but I think he was at the wedding. No big deal.

I then get the keys to "her" place in Riften and it turns out it actually belongs to her little friend. Everytime I go to see her, he's actually there too. And the place is kind of a dump. So I suggest that she move into my place in Whiterun. She's cool with that and even seems happy when I first see her at my place. Even tells me how much she likes the house and starts her own business. But then I walk into the other room and who is there? Her little boy toy!! Hey dude, why are you in my house in Whiterun? I didn't invite you? What do you think you're doing here?

Everytime I go back to my house in Whiterun, there he is. He's always telling me that he's never seen Mjoll upset like this before. Yeah, she's probably upset because I keep interrupting your mad passionate lovemaking and she's afraid she'll get caught. Go back to your own house in Riften dude. I don't want to see you around here anymore.

I'm regretting busting up the Dark Brotherhood because I'd love to be putting out a contract on this guy. If I can find a good webcam setup to buy in one of these holds, this guy is going to end up with a fireball up his butt.

You can buy black soul gems in the mage college.

BTW fought my first poisonous dragon today  Dragon floats down in front of me, blasts me with the flame breath, I'm shooting arrows into the flame, kind of watching my health and suddenly see the status "You are poisoned." Sweet, this is new. Dragon floats back down, resume normal combat except when he flies up I'm still taking a little damage. Finally kill the dragon and I'm STILL taking damage. Turns out a freaking spider - out in the wild, not in a spiderwebby cave - is biting my ### right at the moment the dragon is in my face. :hot:
I ran into my first spiders the other day. I was walking through tall grass and all the sudden the something bad music is playing and I am taking damage. But I don't see anything. So I'm looking for where the arrows are coming from when Lydia finally catches up and starts killing things on the ground, that's when I saw the spiders. There were a bunch of them.
Spiders suck, but the things I really hate are the Chaurus. Those things can just suck it.
I saw some mud crabs by the water recently. I steered clear of them. Disgusting creatures. I hope to never see another.Take care.

Can someone tell me how beneficial over-charging your spells are?I got the perk, see that it takes more mana and does more damage, but no idea how much better they are or if they're even worth it. The only quantifiable effect I've been able to conclude is that it takes more mana to over-charge a spell than casting it twice regularly. About 250-300% mana from the eye-ball test. But does an over-charged fireball do more damage than 2 regular fireballs? If not, why does it cost more mana than two? From my experience it does about equal or less damage, but it could be my accuracy and it's difficult to tell as 1-2 fireballs usually kill the enemy regardless of overcharging. Yes there's the benefit of stagger, but if that's the main benefit, it's better to use a lower-ranked spell like firebolt over a much higher-mana but higher-damage one like inferno to just abuse the stagger and spam it for little mana cost. However, this also means over-charging higher level spells is meaningless if it does equal or less damage-per-mana ratio to 2 normal casts. Also, what about other spells like flame wall and fire shield? Do those increase in damage? It costs the same 250-300% mana so you'd assume it does but it's hard to see any damage difference and there's no stagger with these spells so the only benefit is the damage if there is any. Also what if you supercharge a conjured Atronarch or Daedra? Are they more powerful? Damage-wise or health-wise?I've searched google for this and have come up with nothing specific :(
You mean dual-casting, right? If so, it costs 2x mana but gives you 2.1x damage. The primary benefits are that it staggers the guys and that it gets damage out there quicker so you don't need to cast that many of them. If the guy is 4 steps away, for instance, you might not be able to keep him at bay long enough with dual-casted firebolts before he gets to you whereas you might be able to kill him with a few dual-casted fireballs. As far as dual-casted lower-level spells versus single-cast higher-level spells, it's a balance. I have about 500 magicka and I still almost never use any spell over fireball. The extra magicka cost versus extra spell damage doesn't seem to be worth it. Maybe if I started using some items that reduced the cost of destruction spells, that balance would change. It probably would. But for right now, I stick to fireballs or occasionally firebolts if I'm really low on magicka.I don't think dual-casted daedra are any better than single-casted ones.
No, they are better, though like all the other magic spheres, they are only better if you have the perk. Dual casting conjuration spells makes them last longer. Dual casting destruction gives you stagger. Dual casting illusion affects higher level opponents. All assuming you have the relevant perk. On a pure "points of damage per magicka cost" basis, they aren't beneficial in that respect. That said, the Destruction stagger perk is one of the best perks in the entire game in terms of how beneficial it is to a mage character. Melee opponents can seldom get in combat range with you. That's golden.

Any secret tips on where to get refined moonstone or moonstone ore? I just unlocked elven smithing but now I can't find any moonstone to smith elven gear. I've been to a couple smiths with not much luck. How often do their inventories refresh?
Easiest to just buy it from blacksmiths and people who sell general items. Might not be available until a certain level.

Ice Wraith. Not really tough but really hard to hit since they move fast! If you have perked your archery enough you can slow down and zoom in either 25% or 50%, that's very helpful with these guys IMO.
I can NEVER hit those with my bow. And I have time slowed by 50%. I think the main issue is I am just not sure where to aim. These guys are probably about 50% of my one-handed leveling as they are the only enemy I just go straight to a sword the minute I see them.
I think they are basically little orbs that fly around, and the part that looks like a snake is just a wake they leave behind. Anytime I hit the lead part of it I score a hit. When I am for the body I almost never hit it.

It's a bug. You need to kill him but don't let Mjoll know you killed him.
link

The player can marry Mjoll if they possess and are wearing the Amulet of Mara. The player must also have completed her personal quest. She can be both a follower and a spouse simultaneously. When married, Mjoll opens a shop, and gives the player a profit of 100 Septims each day; everyday that you don't collect from her, it adds up.

Even when wedded with the player however, Aerin may sometimes continue following her. One solution to this particular bug is to kill Aerin. Alternatively, one may change followers for a time and then recruit Mjoll again, which can also resolve the issue. Methods killing Aerin without upsetting Mjoll are as follows:

The easiest way of killing Aerin when Mjoll is a companion, is telling Mjoll to wait inside a hold that is not Riften. Aerin will leave the hold and head back to Riften. He can be killed on the way back with no witnesses, and also without Mjoll hating you.

On PC, instead of directly killing him, you can use the console command "disable" while selecting him to make him disappear.

another way is to kill Aerin when Mjoll is a companion and is following you, followers are oblivious to crimes. (confirmed PS3)

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:Two related things -1. My orc has made himself available for awhile now, but the only person to express interest is ...a big gay blacksmith. I'm beginning to think this is all he has in the cards. At least he'll get cheap big gay weapons, right? Big Gay Sword. Big Gay Hammer. When I'm feeling sweet and subtle, the Big Gay Dagger...2. An assassin from the Dark Brotherhood just tried to take me out. I found a letter that says someone performed the Black Sacrament and payed the gold to have me whacked. I have to assume they'll keep sending people after me.I know where their lair is. Is it a good or bad idea to clean the place out like a hornet's nest?

1. Who you can marry is based off of a few things. One of them is that you have to have completed a quest for them typically. They also have to be single.

And, of course, there's the whole deal about talking to the priest and wearing the amulet.

2. I killed an assassin early in the game and never had another one come after me.

I don't think you can get into the lair without knowing the password. Also, to actually destroy the Dark Brotherhood, you need to start the Dark Brotherhood questline.

I think I hit a glitch?

I accidentally shot an imperial soldier because he felt the need to help me out with bandits at Fort Greymoor and I thought he was one of them...so I got bounty. Now when I go to Whiterun, I get attacked by some guy named Commander Chris or whatever...and then Lydia and I destroy him, but he stands back up at full health and attacks again. So we kill him again, rinse and repeat. And it just keeps going. What now?

Can I still pay the bounty somehow or do I need to go back a save or two?

On the one hand the Nords are generally a racist reprehensible people.

On the other hand, their Temple of Mara will marry an interracial gay couple.

My orc married the Big Gay Smith. I suppose it's nice having a house attached to a full smithy and mine. I store all my ingots, ore, and dragon parts there. Plus Big Gay Smith makes a mean homemade pie.

i took a pretty random approach to start this game (xbox360), and stayed on the "main quest" for a little bit, and then went exploring and got sidetracked. leveled up fairly quickly, but didn't figure out how to use magic (playing as a Wood Elf) until i hit about level 10 , so i'm behind in that aspect of the game.

stopped in at the Riverwood trader while going from one side of the map to the other, to sell some stuff and lessen the weight i've been humping around. as i'm leaving i cruise by the table near the door and see some "free" arrows sitting there. as i swing my cursor over them, it goes a little too far past and i accidentally hit (A) as it lands on a sword which i inadvertently "steal".

so the shop owner (forget his name) gets his panties in a twist, and comes out from behind the bar swinging his mace around like he means business. not wanting to kill him and incur the wrath of the village and end up with a bounty, i leave the building and head down the road. well, apparently it was a very "special" steel sword i nicked, because the shop owner follows me outside, and is chasing me down as i jog down the path toward Whiterun. oddly, no guards are coming to his assistance, and everyone else in the village doesn't seem to care at all.

in an effort to get this guy to stop one handing me with his mace, i "drop" the stolen sword at his feet hoping this will resolve the situation. sadly, it does not. and like a Jersey Shore castmember hopped up on Muscle Milk and liquid courage, the shop ownner guy just won't let it go and proceeds to follow me out of town, screaming about "...bathing in my blood..." and all kind of other insensitive dialogue. so, i ended him quietly just north of town; absconded with the key to his shop, and a little bit of gold.

since nobody "saw" this happen, i wonder if there will be a bounty out for me the next time i roll through there? also, since he was the proprietor of the establishment, will he respawn within the game, or do i now have access to all his stuff (though his sister might be an issue since she actually witnessed the original theft)?

I have no idea what to do with my perks...what are some of the ones you all have found useful? Right now I've thrown them all into Destruction. I was thinking smithing or enchantment ones will be helpful, and/or the sneak ones.

I'm not sure about Archery. It's nice to have range on melee people, but I suck at the aiming part. I'm thinking I want to play kind of a mage/rogue class. I'm great with magic, I dual wield daggers and sneak all the tie, and I can use a bow when I need to, but using a bow isn't a strength or anything. There's so much freedom right now because leveling up one thing doesn't seem to hinder anything else...kind of awesome, but I only have os many perks to put in so many places, so I want the most utility I can get out of them.

Can Lydia get lost while you're out and about? I was running around near a river, turned and she was gone. So, i run back up the river and see her dumb### swimming.

Will she always catch up or find you?

Also, i think i managed to screw something up or maybe find a glitch in Angarvunde. I walk into the place and pickpocket the key from Medresi Dran. Which in turn lets me all the way through the maze of ruins and the catacomb. And which also allows me to open every gate/door before Dran comes down the hall. When she reaches a gate thats supposed to be closed (its wide open) she stops and says "go figure out how to open these gates". I then run around for 20-30 minutes hitting every lever and switch i can find.

I can't seem to get in there and follow her to the "treasure". Is there anything of value in there or just some gold and jewels? And she also said "its all mine!" so was she just gonna screw me over?

i kinda like the Sneak skill tree. it's easy to work on, and becomes pretty valuable later on when you are a higher level, and some foes don't really see you, even when you are right in front of them. if i had it to do over again, and i'm sure i will when i finish the game with my first character, i'll put more weight on smithing (which i've neglected to a point) so i can create better weapons and make upgrades.

Update on the mammoths for those who care:

When you run into them again, but this time there's a giant walking with them...DEFINITELY don't try to kill them. Even from a cliff from afar. It takes the Giant an estimated five seconds to walk over and one hit you.

Restoration is probably a safe place that you won't regret. It sounds like the Sneak tree might be for you as well.
I invested in the first perks of Sneak and Smithing. I think I'll be wearing light armor just about always once I can enchant some stuff with the magicka regen and such that the robes I have now give me. Is Ebony armor light or heavy? I assume glass is the best light armor, but what do I know...

Sometimes followers just disappear. Before I had Lydia, I used the wood elf archer from Riverwood. I made him some armor, smithed up his bow, and used him as a mule. He was a great compliment to my orc tank. He'd soften enemies up with arrows as I charged in.Then we fought the first dragon together, he lived to watch me absorb its soul, then I map-jumped back to Whiterun....and he was gone. I've never seen him again.:confused:It's such a glitchy game.

Dragonscale is the best light armor and Ebony is heavy armor. But if you are going the Mage route Robes will be better as you can enchant them to a higher level than regular armor IIRC.

If you max out enchanting, you can put some pretty sick enchantments on your armor.... once you get it up that high, that is. I'm L38 and still using the Archmage Robes because I've never put anything into smithing and my enchanting is somewhere in the high-60's.So even for a magicky guy, enchanted light or heavy armor will be better than the robes. But it'll take a while to get that high. Of course, it's not a strict either/or thing. You can use light or heavy armor for your other pieces of equipment even if you're using mages robes.
I thought the magika regens and the fortify spells worked better on robes. I am at 100 Enchanting though, but am a stealth archer with smithing and enchanting so I don't have much experience with the regens. I typically enchant with archery and resist enchantments and shock on my weapons. Still trying to figure out if Banish is worth putting it on a weapon.

You can't kill kids in Skyrim

If I watched you absorb a dragon soul and then carve up its body into various parts to take back to your Big Gay Orc Husband for your Smithery of S&M Debauchery, I don't think you'd see me again, either.

The magicka regeneration on the robes you can buy or find is much better than what you can create yourself. The bonus to spell casting you can better, but you don't need to. Master Robes of Destruction plus 3 items you put fortify destruction on will have you over 100% at high levels of enchanting and perks in the right places.

Banish is only useful if fighting creatures that can be banished like Daedra. So probably not worthwhile except for rare cases. It is really only useful because it's the enchantment that increases most the value of weapons you want to sell.

If I watched you absorb a dragon soul and then carve up its body into various parts to take back to your Big Gay Orc Husband for your Smithery of S&M Debauchery, I don't think you'd see me again, either.
:lmao: :lmao:

For someone playing a mage who plans to wear the Master of Destruction robes but also wants the best armor rating you can manage, you need to go with heavy armor. I believe I have 100 Heavy Armor, have the perks for it to +100% (but not the others since they won't help as you're not wearing all heavy armor or a matching set), am wearing daedric or dragonplate as all of my armor, and I think I even have an extra Fortify Heavy Armor on one of my items, and I still don't have Armor Rating maxed out. I believe I'm around 430 or so.

Is there any difference between Heavy and Light armor outside of the effects on how well you can sneak? I'm not seeing any magicka penalties or anything for armor like I'm used to in other games

In Oblivion armor reduced how effective your magic was, but they did away with that in Skyrim. So no negative in that regard for mages. In addition to the sneak penalty (which can be overcome with perks, the Muffle spell or the Muffle enchantment), there is a small lessening of movement speed. You can also overcome that with perks or by using the Steed Stone as your sign. Steed is a great sign for the +100 carry weight, so it's a realistic option if you want to keep your travel speed maxed out.I'm not aware of any other negatives for heavy versus light.

By the way, height affects movement speed as well, the taller the better. One of the small downsides to playing Breton, and one of the upsides of playing Altmer.

Question: what is a grain mill supposed to do? In the windmills I "activate" them and on the farms I push them around in circles, but nothing else happens
No clue. I tried making some powdered mammoth tusk... didn't work.Anyone ever kill two dragons at the same time? I didn't get a soul from the second one... he's just laying there with his skin still on.

If youre wearing the Master of Destruction robes how can you also wear armor? Ive been playing this game for 20+ hours and am level 20 and there are still tons of things I have no clue about. Im probably playing this game all wrong but heck im still having fun.

GD, can you elaborate on this either in spoiler tags or in PM.TIA!

You want to check out the orphanage in Riften and go find the kid that ran away...

 Will check it out hopefully when I get home.

SO I had the small house in Whiterun, now I have the sweet pad in Solitude. Is there any way to get all my crap up there? I have so many dragon bones and scales, books, it would take a ton of trips.

That makes my decision tougher, I may just end up going with Heavy armor. I need to find the Steed Stone (DON'T tell me where it is, please). Heavy v Light has no effects on Archery either? I'm so miffed because it seems ot me that movement speed isn;t even really a penalty, so why would anyone ever choose light armor?
