General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

Morrowwind at the time was more revolutionary as far as what an RPG could be. But I'm not sure going back 10 years in videogaming ever really works well outside of nostalgia.

Trailers from all games in the Elder Scrolls series, including a few I didn't know existed (Redguard? Shadowkey?)

I'm already hopelessly addicted to this game. If I finish with this, will I enjoy going back to the other ones like Oblivion or Morrowind, or is this one that much better that I'll be disappointed?
It should be noted that the Skyrim DLC's are expected to be pretty big so you may have plenty more play on this gamehttp://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-29-skyrim-dlc-rarer-but-more-substantial
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will have fewer DLC add-ons than Fallout 3 had, but they will be "more substantial", Bethesda has revealed.Game director Todd Howard wants them "to be closer to an expansion pack feel".He also said Bethesda made "a mistake" by ending Fallout 3 when the main quest concluded. Playing DLC therefore meant reverting to an early game save (until add-on Broken Steel re-opened the world and upped the level cap)."That was a mistake, yeah. We were really confident about that, then the game came out and we heard pretty loud and clear that was not what [fans] wanted," Howard told AusGamers."So we're not gonna do that again. No, you'll definitely be able to... When you finish the main quest you can just keep playing.""The Fallout 3 pace that we did was very chaotic."Todd Howard, game director"And you mentioned DLC," he added. "We would like to do DLC; we don't have any specific plans yet, but they've been really successful and we like making them."Right now I can say that we'd like to do less DLC but bigger ones - you know, more substantial. The Fallout 3 pace that we did was very chaotic. We did a lot of them - we had two overlapping groups. We don't know what we're going to make yet, but we'd like them to be closer to an expansion pack feel."An expansion-style approach is a long way from what Bethesda offered post-Oblivion, in 2006, when we were infamously asked to pay £1.70 for Horse Armour. Still, Bethesda announced in March this year - five years after Oblivion's release - that people were still buying the equestrian protection.Howard went on to mull the possibility of PC mods for Skyrim appearing on console. Oblivion was improved considerably by the tinkering PC audience.Bethesda is looking into mods on consoles, excitingly, but the freedom to download a fan creation that could corrupt your Skyrim game is a liberty that doesn't yet exist on console. It's an issue that is "not going to be solved for the game's release", said Howard - "But it's something that we're going to continue to look at because we think that it's an awesome part of the game that the majority of our audience isn't seeing."

This idea is consistent with what they did with Oblivion; as Shivering Isles was a pretty big expansion.Knights of the Nine was smaller, but still fun.

I was going to try and buy Morrowind online but, from what I've read from other users/comments, it wouldnt be worth it with the long delays in loading screens and with how buggy it was sans mod (XBOX user).

I'd like to see bad guys sneaking, sniping, pick pocketing and breaking and entering.
:lmao: that would piss me off if I lost items to a pickpocket, but I would still think it was awesome and then hunt him down.
It would be similar to Assassin's Creed II and later then, when you can get pick pocketed and then you have to chase the guy all over hell until you catch him.
I was in Riften when I ran into a thief trying to break in to someone's house at night. I walked past the guy and it scared him and he started to walk away when he noticed me.

Thanks. I had no plans to hunt down all eight, but I have been doing a lot of random Word of Power quests for Aernigar or whatever of the Greybeards. You come across then now and again if you do enough of those. Just wondered if it was worth the effort.
Yah. The last one was the only one that I specifically hunted down to find. All the others I found because I tried to get as many shouts as possible. So in that sense, it wasn't any extra effort. But the payoff is just pretty weak. The only 2 masks that I carry around are Morokei and Volsung. Both of those are pretty peachy keen.
Otar was the first one I found and it's e one I've kept wearing. I enhanced it to Legendary and with the 30% resistance to frost, fire and shock, it seems like its been ages since any foe really did much damage to me.

My fav mask so far is Masque of Clavicus Vile (not one of the 8) not only because it looks badazz and the bizarre story I had to go through to get it, but speech and price effects it produces helps a lot.

As for tweaks, not sure if you could even do it, but adding volume to items would make the game much more difficult and realistic. How many of us are toting around three suits of armor, four bows, fifty potions, six sets of dragon bones and 20-30 books? Maybe make it more of a 'hardcore' setting.
Could just adjust item's weight so it is an overall encumbrance. Not sure if I'm a huge fan personally of doing that, though. If you can only manage to haul one suit of armor out of a dungeon, it would annoy me more than it would add anything.

Not sure if NPCs can gain backstab damage or not. Breaking and entering could be done with a script... there's already some of that which happens in Riften now.
I'd like to have better sensory awareness. Right now when I'm out in the wild I get precious little feedback on what's going on around me. I hear wolves baying but cannot tell from what direction. (although I'm sure a better sound setup would help this). Maybe a yellow dot on the compass to indicate "I hear something in this direction.I think the sneaky "eye" is overpowered. Unless something is running at me and I hear their breathing and footsteps, or a human says "hey, WTF?" I shouldn't know when I'm detected.I'd like to remove the quest icon from the compass. Let me set a manual location, but I shouldn't be able to know where a person is at any given moment.
Most of those are doable in some fashion (though not really where I'd be aiming for). The quest icon removal I would be surprised if there isn't a mod out already for it. I think I might have seen something in the .ini files for turning off the sneak icon as well. Or barring that, you could probably just get the file for the normal icon, and save it overtop of the sneak one.The hearing thing might be a little tougher. Though I was under the impression if you can hear a wolf howling you can probably already see the red dot on your compass. Or soon after, anyway. It might take a lot of work to add something new like that. Probably not in the list of stuff I'd be focused on again, but interesting thought.
I'd like quests and dialogues to be more interactive. "Go get me this sword from this cave I marked on your map" quests suck. Give me more options when I speak to people. Don't have them give me the whole story.
New quests, editing quests, etc, is definitely possible. Though you'd have to record your own dialogue for them and it wouldn't match the voices being used if you want it to be audio as well. It could just be text dialogue though. One thing I have had in mind since Oblivion would be a mod that takes the normal quests and changes them just enough that it makes it feel like a new game. Maybe it randomizes who gives you the quest, so you actually have to go explore to find them and can't just head straight to Person X to start up a quest with a great item. Maybe randomize some of the rewards you get, or have different versions of quests, sending you to other locations, etc. That will be a lot of work though.
Scale magic damage up or melee/archer damage back. Powerful mages are supposed to be able to make the earth shake.Fix the stacking bonus that allows you to cast spells for free. The first item can grant 25% bonus, but the second should grant 1/2 that, and the third 1/2 of that and so on.
I think magic damage is fine with the stagger perk there, but I agree about scaling back somehow the top damage. The way to get rid of the free magic would just be lower the maximum enchantment you can get with Fortify <magic skill>.
Make it so you can't chug five potions on the pause menu. "yeah, you're about to chop my head off, but wait just a second, please while I toss back a six pack of healing potions!"I agree with the others about money... Maybe have the tax collector come by once a month wherever the player owns property?
Potions I know can be done, Oscuro changed the limit in Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, though I will have to hunt to see what controls it, whether it's a script or an effect or what. For money, one thing that I want to avoid is just taking cash away for nothing. I'd rather have something where you want to spend the money. Maybe charge for existing services (costs you to use the smelter, the forges, alchemy tables, etc). Maybe have some of the nicer quests where it would make sense require a bribe before the person will give you the quest. Or add new upgrades for houses. Though some of that will require dealing with meshes and textures and crap I have no clue how to do. I know how to add and move items about and such, but actually making a new item and not having it look like an existing one, I have only a basic idea of how it is done, and would rather have a graphic artist do it. Maybe could recruit someone willing.Oh, here's an idea. How about a breeding farm where you could take your dog to have a litter and let you pick out one of the pups trying to get an upgraded dog? Maybe let you choose what dog to breed yours with to try to accentuate certain characteristics (health, bite strength, speed, etc)? Of course they charge a pretty penny. Could do the same thing for horses I suppose.

And just where can this be found?
Talk to Lod, the blacksmith in Falkreath and the strangeness will begin.

I have this glitch going on at the pub in Riften where this thief is trapped in there running around like a chicken. I could prob put him out of his misery but its kind of amusing.

I know I'm a noob to this game and RPG in general (dabbled a little way back) but not my type of game.

Bit upset I can't be as menacing as I want

Would love to hear input from people on what things you think need fixing, and how you think would be good ways to go about it.
Lock picks should be more expensive and much more rare. Buying one should be difficult to locate and very expensive, and finding one should be a real treasure. You shouldn't want to burn through 3 or 4 to pick an advanced lock and there should be an incentive to put perks into lockpicking.

As for race, I'm with SteadyMobbin - just pick one you think looks cool. I'm always Imperial because it looks most like me IRL. I haven't died yet but I've come very close twice. Once my follower saved me, then she died. The other time I used Emporers voice (Imperial power, calms everyone) on a mob of bandits and ran away to heal. A lot of people playing tanks would choose Nord or Orc for good reasons. But if you're playing "nethack rules" I'd go with Imperial just for the special power.
interesting, i started an orc tank this time (2 handed, heavy, smithing, enchanting) but may have to consider an imperial if i don't make it
Death :sadbanana: "Not like this. . . "
After very carefully watching my smithing and armor, and leveling up my axe, I proceeded in the Companions quest line up to the point where I'm there with no armor or weapons and they tell me something like "Go kill those guys as a werewolf" OK, like an idiot off I go. Kill 2 guys in 3rd person view (although I normally hate fighting in 3rd person) and then got ambushed by 3 or 4 with special anti werewolf weapons <_<Ugh. I didn't really want to be a werewolf - just wanted to move the quest line forward.
Next build: Charming Orc (high speech), unarmed or 2 handed warhammer only. No ranged weapons of any kind. No magic. Absolutely NO out-of-character quests :hot:

seems a strange one to call out. I would start with the AI, then the clumsy combat command/interface for close range. There are some gui issues on xbox. Not sure why level up is on the b menu. It should be on the start menu IMO and quests should be on the b menu. It is a real PITA.

Oooof.

My first attempt at nethack rules ended pretty bad. I finished the Golden Claw mission and killed the dragon at the West Tower. Made it to level 8. Then I died in the Ratway trying to make it to the Thieves Guild. I just blanked out and didn't get to my healing potions in time and/or run.

Terrible. :bag:

Yep, and now you have to start ALLL over.

Same here. At first I thought it was going to start a quest, but nope. Then I kept expecting him to say something or do something. But no, he just kept running around bumping in to walls. It almost reminds me of when you have a fly in the car. I want to hold a door open until he runs out.

I've found him running around the basement of the blacksmith's house. Which incidentally is a nice place to visit if you're looking to steal some ingots.

Sometimes this game is hilarious.

Hit a random dungeon and was having fun stalking the bandits that had taken over inside. Came up on a switch plate triggered swinging door... One of the bandits noticed me, ran over, and then promptly hit the switch plate. As the door swung back into position, the crumpled mangled body of the bandit came with it. :excited: I then had the idea to lure the bandit's partner to the same doom. Dropped a fire rune, made some noise and watch in complete merriment as he hit the rune shortly followed by the pressure plate. Was kinda bumming there wasn't more bandits I could lure over.

Had a similar experience in a dungeon that had two swinging gates side by side. 4 or 5 bad ### draugers (at least badd ## for the level i was at) come racing towards me, i back peddle and watch each one of them step on the switch and get flung about wildly. Then i just  and walk on through, pillaging their corpses for lots of good stuff. Had me :lmao:

The worst part is I really liked that character. He was doing great. I just got distracted and had a mental lapse. There's no way those two goons in the Ratway should have been able to take him down. :(

I've got a crew hanging out at my house in Riften. Me, wife, house carl, dark elf chick from hunting store in Whiterun and a random dog I found wandering around one day.

Did a random side quest where I had to get some guys helmet back for him. He was in Solitude. Was interesting. It was in a cavern full of bears and weird dudes who had bees swarming around them. They weren't too easy to kill, but I managed. Solitude is pretty cool. Is there a house there that I can buy? And if so, how do I do it?

Finally managed to find a weapon (battleaxe) with paralysis. Had to pay over 4400 for it, but snatched it up without a second thought. After disenchanting it, I plused up two glass bows, one with paralysis and shock (Glass Bow of Paralysis) and one pure damage bow enchanted with shock and frost (Shock and Awe). Going by value, Shock and Awe is more valuable, but I am stoked to try both out. I have to wait as I was unable to find Refined Malichite at either Whiterun or Riften (really???) so that I could smith then. So I'll have to go from town to town a few times until I get it.
This is killing me, reading through this thread. DIL decided to have my wife's new granddaughter yesterday, so that totally hosed up my Skyrim time. Can't play today, likely not tomorrow. So now I will have to wait until at LEAST Thursday to smith these new bows up, and it's killing me! Stupid real life, always getting in the way. :P :banned:

Almost done the Companions quest. While I certainly have had much tougher clear outs in the game for other missions, there was something really satisfying about avenging Kodlak's death by wiping out the Silver Hand.

Is that the furthest you are with it?
I just started the Glory of the Dead quest before I signed off for the evening.
For those who have finished the above:
I cured Kodlak's spirit and also cured Farkas' spirit and now the only thing I get for mission is "speak to the Companions for work"...I still have 4 witch heads and there seems like there should be more. I wanted to get rid of this Werewolf thing myself and start the Dark Brotherhood or something but before I do that I want to wrap up the Companions stuff...is that all there is to it?

I'm surprised you guys don't move to Pacmantm rules. Start with 3 lives. Earn another one every 10 levels.
That sounds more interesting to me.

No I believe you can use that at any time to get rid of your werewolf impediment. You may have to use the Witchead while in the underforge though, not sure on that. You can remove witch heads from inventory now that you've completed the quest involving cleansing kodlak's spirit.

Sounds good, I'll try and look. Do you know if by doing this do I relinquish my Compainion rights at all?
**EDIT** I found the answer...thanks for the help.

Spriggans. My butthole clenches whenever I hear that buzzing sound. Those, and ice wraiths are two things I really hate fighting. There's a really nice crib for sale in Solitude. Talk to the Jarl.

I stopped reading at page 85 when my PS3 broke. I know Matts said his has held up very nicely. Anyone having issues with the game on PS3 anymore, Canuck? Hoping the 320 slim holds up better while playing this then my 60 fat which lasted 4 years

I only had the game freeze once since I bought the game roughly a month ago.
