General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (3 Viewers)

Has anyone maxed out their achievements/trophy's with a single character?
Just finished it off tonight. I messed up the very first daedric quest by not killing a wizard and had to do all the quests over.
Once you made that mistake did you have to create a new character to get the quests to reset?
No, I ended the game with about 1k saves. I had a level 24 that was almost done with nightcrawler temple that I used. It sucked going back to being very weak.

Just started playing today. Only logged about an hour, so far it's boring as hell and the game movement sucks.Does this get better?
Well all games come down to a subjective opinion. I didn't find the first hour boring. But then I also kind of knew what I was getting into so I had appropriate expectations for it. By that I mean the way the game plays and how the story unfolds not the actual events. For me it's been very good from the beginning. Only you really know whether it will get better for you. Most opinions here are pretty much biased in favor of saying yes it gets better. But I know as an FPS player it wasn't until I played Oblivion that I found a game in this genre that I liked. And I had tried a few. I would say give it a try for a while longer and then decide.
Do I have to open favorites to every time I want to cast a spell? How do you fight like this? No hotkeys?

Once you have whatever spell assigned to a hand it stays there until you change it. I play on the console so yeah no hot keys. I would say the biggest challenge for me has been going from PC to console play. I spent years with a keyboard and a mouse. I was fairly good at it. So it does take some getting used to but once you do it is fairly easy to deal with.

Yeah I play all my games on PC (including this one) but this seems like it's set up more for console play.

I played Oblivion on both and it was OK on the PC but yeah a little console leaning I'd say. I haven't tried this one on PC.

I feel like a few things have changed since I last played. Is this possible?

I chose not to update to 1.3 yet

Main thing I noticed is a khajit clan right outside the whiterun gates. They were by a fire and they looked like an occupy whiterun clan. Never saw them once in my 70 hours before. This can't be because I went to 320 slim. So I'm shuked

Well I have only played on the 360 and they were there for me as well.

I really have to be missing something 'big'. Everyone has been telling me about this game, it's "Game of the Year" and it just seems slow and limited to me.

The dragons are pretty awesome. And the leveling up of the skills and leveling up overall is a big improvement over the last Elder Scrolls game. You can spend the time/energy to do the mental math of what all is going on behind the scenes, but you really don't have to. So you can just play, do the things you like, get better at them, and then do cooler versions of them. I think that's what people liked best about it.But I don't play video games much. So I'm not sure how it compares to current non-Elder Scrolls games.
Speaking of leveling. What would happen if I spent the whole game at 1. Just leveled up to 2 but didn't level yet in game. Would opponents increase or stay low. Not going to do it but was curious.

Only a few monsters in the game level with your character. The rest have set levels that don't change which means your level 1 character is going to be almost useless if you don't level it.

I have to assume from your comments that you don't play RPG games. It sounds more like you are having issues with the genre than the game itself. What type of RPG games have you played before?

OK all possible chores, errands and general interruptions caught up on. Going in now for some extended play. Hopefully when next we speak I will have completed the Forbidden knowledge quest and Diplomatic Immunity. Yeah I am going to get back into the main story line once I finish the amulet quest. They were killing me quick last time but I think I'll have something for them this time.

RPGs, Final Fantasy, Ulitma etc. I mostly play MMORPGs, Warcraft, Rift, LOTR, SWTORs. Skyrim has a turn-based feel but it's not turn based. I do like the 'open' feel but I'm not sure if I'm going the right direction for if I should skill up first. How do you tell what level the mobs are before I engage them and get owned?

Save - Engage - Get Owned - Load - Run

lol you'll start to recognize name types after a few of these. one that always had me po'd in early levels is trackin across the map without saving only to get chased down by a bear and have to start the journey all over

They move. they won't always be outside Whiterun. Sometimes they'll be found in other locations. I had a Thieves Guild quest that required me to contact them. Every time I'd fast travel, they'd move before I got there. So I had to pick a location and just wait for them to come back.

You can also do a quest for one to get him as a follower.

They are traveling merchants. You'll see them alternatively outside of Whiterun, Solitude and Markash that I'm aware of... perhaps more towns.

Fighting seems like I have little or no control of what's going on. I just click and hope...
Are you sure you're playing Skyrim?
Yes on PC.
Well, the FFA schtick answer is "You're doing it wrong."As for a serious answer... are you playing in first person or third person mode? If you are having problems with combat, maybe switch to the opposite of the one you are using and see if it seems any better for you. Personally, I seldom melee fight, so my experience with it is somewhat limited. I haven't felt my close in battles were hit and miss, but I have had trouble in first person view tracking the target. So maybe third person works better for it.

Played my first two hours last night after the fights were over and enjoyed it. Using a mace so I need to get pretty close to the opponent to make contact.

Arizona Ron, if you are experiencing issues during melee, make sure you understand the endurance system (the green bar). If you run out of endurance, and keep trying to swing, it is going to feel strange to you.

One thing I can't get the hang of is the hot keys (left and right horizontal d-pad keys). They keep changing items in both hands and I can't seem to make them only change an item in one hand. I think I will just stick to the favorites menu instead since it does pause the action.

That seems really odd. The left key button changes the left hand, and the right button the right hand. Don't know how you could possible be changing both hands with one button. UNLESS... if you have a hotkey set up with a two handed weapon like a bow (lets say left button), and the right with a single handed weapon (like a mace), when you press the right button to switch from bow to mace, as the mace is only one handed, it will put whatever you last had in your left hand back in your left hand as it equips the mace in the right. i.e. It doesn't just leave that hand empty, and most of the time you wouldn't want it too (since it is normally a shield or another weapon). Conversely, if you have a mace out and hit the left hand button to equip the bow, the bow is two handed so it will have to unequip the mace at the same time, leaving you only with the bow. You can't walk around with the bow in one hand and a heal spell in the other. Are you trying to do something like that and just getting confused on how it works?

I am sure I am confused on how it works.I am not changing both hands on the same press but on subsequent presses. I might be pressing the wrong directional button. I might be pressing left then right which is causing both hands to change on two presses. How do I tag items to be for the left hand vs being for the right hand in the favorites menu? Can I tag a total of 4 items (2 for each hand?)

it was always a pain for one handed, for one-handed, each time you press the button it changes one handfor example left = heal, right = firepressing left, left will change both hands to healpressing right, right will change both hands to firepressing left, then right would change left hand to heal and then back to fire

ok now I am really confused as this seems to not jive with what TX Buckeye said above: "The left key button changes the left hand, and the right button the right hand."Let me give you my setup and maybe that will help.1) Left hand is magic2) Right hand is mace3) In the favorites menu I tag Fire as 1), and Sparks as 2)4) I want the left hand to switch between fire and sparks and never have the right hand change. Is this doable with the hot keys? When I try to do this as TX Buckeye said ("left changes left and right changes right"), I press the left key once and it changes my left hand from fire to sparks as expected. If I then press the left key a second time to switch back to fire, it instead changes my right hand.

that's how i ran my first character (ps3) right hand was sword, left hand was shield or heal. from the items menu assign the mace to your right hand and sparks to you left hand. assign hot keys for sparks = left and fire = rightpressing right should switch your left hand to firepressing left now should switch your left hand back to sparksyou can go back and forth and keep the mace in your right handthe hard part is if you ever press left while sparks is already in your left hand then it will also change your right hand to sparks

on a side note re: one hand magic, one hand weapon

you may be better off switching between dual wielding magic and dual wielding weapons in order to take advantage of the dual wield damage bonuses

that's how i ran my first character (ps3) right hand was sword, left hand was shield or heal. from the items menu assign the mace to your right hand and sparks to you left hand.

I think I am struggling on how to do the bolded. When I try and tag something in the favorites, all I get is a 1) or a 2) next to the item. What specific steps do I take to assign hot keys to be specific to left or right? I don't get how the numbers figure into this. The only time the number seems to get tagged is when I press the left key in the favorites menu. Pressing the right key in the favorites menu does not do anything that I have noticed.

as an aside this all seems awful clunky. I think it would have been more intuitive if the left key let you cycle through items for your left hand only and the right key cycle through items in your right hand only. Having to remember where you left off in the sequence seems problematic for me as I will likely always screw this up.

I think it would have been more intuitive if the left key let you cycle through items for your left hand only and the right key cycle through items in your right hand only. Having to remember where you left off in the sequence seems problematic for me as I will likely always screw this up.
sorry, left and right refer to the directional pad, not the handsassign the following

left on directional pad = sparks

right on directional pad = fire

gotta admit im starting to get bored of this at level 29. might just finish up dark brotherhood and main quest and move ontp other games. starting with a new character is not something im interested in doing. regardless, im so glad i bought this game. put in 50 hours into it and habe had a blast playing.

Can I tag a total of 4 items (2 for each hand?)
it was always a pain for one handed, for one-handed, each time you press the button it changes one hand

for example left = heal, right = fire

pressing left, left will change both hands to heal

pressing right, right will change both hands to fire

pressing left, then right would change left hand to heal and then back to fire
ok now I am really confused as this seems to not jive with what TX Buckeye said above: "The left key button changes the left hand, and the right button the right hand."Let me give you my setup and maybe that will help.

1) Left hand is magic

2) Right hand is mace

3) I want the left hand to switch between fire and sparks and never have the right hand change.

Is this doable with the hot keys?
that's how i ran my first character (ps3) right hand was sword, left hand was shield or heal. from the items menu assign the mace to your right hand and sparks to you left hand.

assign hot keys for sparks = left and fire = right

pressing right should switch your left hand to fire

pressing left now should switch your left hand back to sparks

you can go back and forth and keep the mace in your right hand

the hard part is if you ever press left while sparks is already in your left hand then it will also change your right hand to sparks

I understood that part, I am not understanding how to assign the hot keys as left or right. All I get when I do it is a 1 or a 2 next to the item. When in the favorites menu, what are the exact steps to take?

Thank you for your help!

that's all you can do (as i understand it) for me it would swap my left hand first and then my right hand.

ok that appears to be what I am seeing. I guess since it seems counter intuitive to me I was hoping what TX Buckeye said was correct (left pad only controls left hand) but that does not appear to be the case. Thanks again. I think I will just stick to the favorites menu and pause the action.

You can hot key on the PS3?
yes, it is not great but can be done. When in the favorites menu, select an item using the left d pad key and you will see a number 1 go beside the item. Do the same with the right d pad key on another item and you should see a number 2 appear. These will be your two hot keyed items. Since I am still confused as how to best used the hot keys, you can just experiment with them yourselves by pressing left and right d-pad keys while playing to see the affects.

OK finishing Forbidden Knowledge was tough. Man that first guy was the thorn in my side both times. Anyway after several deaths, both mine and Lydia's, I was able to get through. But I haven't gone onto Diplomatic Immunity yet. I went home to drop some stuff off and realized I was actually fairly close to Fellglow Keep. Man this place is crawling with trouble but there is some good loot. Took a break to eat and pay attention to the wife for a bit so I still haven't quite finished that.

I think it's time to trade up companion wise. My Lydia is getting killed pretty regularly now. Who was the one you guys were suggesting?

Ok, I went online with the game today for the first time in over a month. I didn't get prompted to download a patch or anything. Is there something I missed?

I'm going to start playing this game soon. What quests should I do first?
It is generally recommended to stay with the main quest in the beginning until you at least get to the first dragon and then you can do what ever you really like.As you move along on the Main Quest you will pick up side quests just by chatting with various people but you can keep those quests on the side until you are ready for them. You can really approach it however you want though.

I'm level 54, but am there with you now. I started just doing the straight up main quest now as I'm getting sort of tired of the game. Even took a couple breaks and fired up some old Bioshock 2 multiplayer just for something else to do. So, today I just:
Talked to the main Greybeard dragon thing and got the quest to find the Elder Scroll. Probably no more sidequests until I'm done.

Thanks. I will do that. I asked because in Oblivion I started out with the Mages Guild and Fighters Guild quests and didn't get to the main questline for a long time, but it sounds like this game is a little different in that regard.

I was getting a bit bored so I made a new guy, 1st guy was two handed orc tank who would use bows and magic from time to time. Game was getting a bit too boring so with the new guy I took the RP more seriously, a pure mage who won't do any manual labor or use any weapons.

I want to get through the game at least once. I think if I started a new character from scratch, the odds of that happening would drop considerably. So I'll finish up with my current character and then, perhaps later, go back for a second round. Lots of other games waiting on the shelf right now. Wouldn't mind taking a break with one of those first.

Are you sure you're playing Skyrim?
Yes on PC.
You'll get used to it. What class are you playing? I play a Mage, and I pretty much leaned on Lydia for the first 5 levels or so while I got the hang of it.
Thief. Seems most people are playing ranged/spell instead of melee. Maybe that's where I screwed up.

I m playing one handed melee with destruction magic thrown in. However I have put some development into archery because you have to really and of course restoration.

A question for those who finished the main quest -

Have you found any benefit to using the Elder Scroll again? It just sits there in your inventory. You can read it and get blinded, but does it do anything else or is it just another useless item? It's an effing Elder Scroll! It should so something. Slow time. Making you temporarily invincible. Evoke orgasm. Something...
