General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (2 Viewers)

I usually only travel with Mjoll (and we're usually married).  I toss her my old gear when I upgrade or if I'm powerful enough make her some wikked awesome gear.  Eventually that becomes too powerful and I ditch having a sidekick and roam Skyrim alone.
Yeah me to. Usually only need a follower at lower levels after I'm powerful and rich myself I send them home.

Yeah once I get to a point it feels OP I usually go it alone. Really only want them to carry stuff anyway.

Follower death. Luckily I save a lot. Somehow Lydia got between me and an enemy just as I was about to land the death blow. Instead it ends up being Lydia who I grab and slit her throat from behind. Dead as a doornail. Go back to previous save.

I like Lydia. I'll marry her and then switch up.
 to me you miss out on a lot if don't change up who you roam with. Mods make the game a whole lot more interesting to me. It's even fun traveling with some tavern wench.

I decided to skip mods for a bit. I wanted to grab some trophies I missed last time and with mods on that doesn't happen.

But I've seen some followers that seem pretty cool.out there.

I just bought 3 expansion pack DLCs but I didn't know they would automatically install and start up and be part of my current game. When I came out of the ratway in Riften I had an entire line of people waiting for me. A courier for a Jarl somewhere offering me a house, a guy who wanted me to hunt vampires (sign me up!) and that started Dawnguard, a courier with an offer to adopt children (oh hell no) , and then two guys waiting patiently at the end of the line who turned out to be cultist who aggroed and tried to kill me

Well at least they waited politely.

How is it possible that you of all people haven't experienced these? I specifically remember you posting when the game first came out. I remember it because it was a hilarious tale about your girflfriend asking if this was the new fantasy game about killing monsters and braving dangerous dungeons, and you had to admit that you were spending your time catching butterflies.

I miss her. I'm trying to get back on a schedule of buying games after they've been out for a long time and get them cheap  - so my intent was to play vanilla Skyrim until I got bored with it and then add the DLCs. I kept approaching but never quite got bored with vanilla. I wasn't even going to install the DLC yet, just bought them today because of the sale and was planning on installing them after the new year.

My current girlfriend just shakes her head and says "My ex used to play a lot of games" I'm sure that's supposed to mean something.

She likes guys who play video games?

The new version has all the DLC. I have been invited several times now to start Dawnguard. But vampires are usually pretty tough and I am still fairly low level so I have been holding off.

Vampires will still start attacking you weather you start Dawnguard or not same with the cultists who start attacking after you first talk to the Grey beards.

Well that explains why so many have been around. I have been part of killing a fairly good number. I got fancy new vampire armor out of the last one. Between me and the town guard he was overwhelmed. I didn't realize it was triggered. Geesh i am usually on a permanent death list from a lot of factions to start with now I got to deal with vampires.

Of course I do enjoy killing the people from these factions and then talking crap to them. My wife just shakes her head.

Yeah it starts at lvl 10. I would go ahead and start it to get Serana to help out. She is in the first Dawnguard quest and then if you decide you don't want her help just take her home and she leaves you until you go back to the Dawnguard quest line again.

Any veterans here tried out the Skyrim: Requiem mod yet? It's a complete game overhaul which takes out enemy scaling and tried to add more realism. The net result of this is that the start of the game is off the charts hard until you start getting perks in place, and then if you can survive until endgame you get rewarded by finally being able to survive encounters at the same rate as vanilla Skyrim, IF you still play tactically. It's both immensely challenging and immensely rewarding.

I know a lot of people just stick to one or two things, but I do find myself becoming slightly less interested if I just go one route for combat.  So mostly archer, little magic, little one-handed.  I do love the look of the bound weapons, so that is a reason to increase my magicka when I level up.  Just started playing again the last couple nights.  I think I am at level 10 or so.  Focused on my Archery, then made a beeline for Fort Amol to get the bound bow.  Will use that if I run into trouble with something big while I increase my one handed clearing out caves of bandits and such.  Never thought of it before, but I would guess you can - Is it is possible to double wield bound axes?

The only bound axe I'm aware of is the 2-handed axe, so you couldn't dual-wield that. Maybe there's a mod with a bound 1-handed axe, but I'm not sure.

Gotcha.  I am probably just remembering wrong.  I thought on my first play through a bit ago I had a one-handed bound weapon, but I am probably just thinking of that axe you mentioned.

The bound sword is one handed, the bound axe is two handed. Dragonborn DLC adds the bound dagger. And of course the bound bow. Thos are the only bound weapons I'm aware of.

Does elemental fury work with bound weapons? Also if you dual wield your off hand determines the speed, so a sword in your main hand and a dagger in your off hand is the way to go.

Well I am definitely loving the bound bow. I have settled into stealth, bow, bound sword or magic closer up depending on the enemy. I am now getting triple damage on sneak and stagger with the bow. I killed a dragon with a half dozen or so shots. In fact my destruction hasn't really been getting leveled as I rely more heavily on the bow and sneak. Whats funny is I never mean to do it but this is where I usually end up. I either have a tank or a sneaky bow wielding wizard. Just my play style I guess. But I feel good that I have expanded my wizardly horizons. Usually I am heavy destruction. But the antronachs and bound weapons have shifted that a bit.

Got the whole Graybeards quest done for now. The Blade quest has started although I just did the dragon hunt and haven't progressed it any further yet. The vampires are starting to become a pain in the butt. I may have to do Dawnguard just to see if I can slow that down a bit.

Something happened I can't ever recall happening before. People are challenging me to wizard duels. Happened twice so far. The first time it crashed the game back to the last save. The second time he attacked me Lydia took him out before I could get to him. No real armor on just the robes and she hit him with a base dmg 23 two handed battle axe. He didn't last long. She has some pretty good armor on. Got to take care of your followers and they'll take care of you. Anyway she wrecked him. I am surprised if they have that mechanic it doesn't keep your follower out of it. Like I said I don't remember this from before. And really you are going to attack the arch mage? Who is also the Dragonborn and who has been witnessed killing dragons? The same guy with a rep for killing his way through bandit camps, rogue magician camps and mowing down undead armies? Not to mention dragon priests and death lords. Really? It's almost insulting.

Also started using illusion. Been using Muffled while dungeon crawling. Sneakier is always better.

Created my first potion. It cures all disease, provides 18% protection against poison and restores endurance IIRC.

A busy day all in all.

So do I need a mod to double wield these, or is that just a main thing like double wielding any other one handed weapon?

Also maybe a dumb question, but how do I know how much damage a bound weapon is doing? I assume at some point (could be wrong) the other weapons would get more powerful - ie a Dragonbone bow with a couple enchantments, but I was curious where that break even point is.

Don't consider these answers definitive, just "to the best of my knowledge" (which is pretty decent, but not infallible)...

The only ones you can dual wield without mods are the bound sword and bound dagger, since they're the only one-handed bound weapons in the official content. But you don't need anything extra to dual wield them, it will just work (and cost a lot of mana).

If you go into your weapon equipment menu with the bound weapon cast and equipped, you'll see the weapon strength of your weapon. You can then compare that to your other weapons. It's my understanding that they're all the equivalent of an unimproved daedric weapon, which means they're amazing at low level, but get less effective at high level (when true warriors have levelled up smithing and are improving their weapons to crazy degrees). Even the conjuration perks don't come close to doing to a bound weapon what levelled smithing can do to a regular one. But they won't be useless, just not optimal. They'll still look awesome and be really fun.

This thread is kind if inspiring me to jump in and try the build I've always wanted to try... I've taken it to about 10th level before but not higher, and it's kind of fun. The shtick is to build a Healer (only) who never does damage themselves. I rely on my follower, constantly casting the heal other and courage spells on them. Just strictly a healing mage in street clothes, wandering around keeping her bodyguard alive. The only things I level and perk are resto and speech, maybe alchemy. It's an interesting challenge.

Thanks, so I assume that all the one-handed skills, potions, apparel apply to the bound sword I would have equipped too?

Sad that I really never looked into the bound weapons much, just assumed all skills that would apply to the normal weapons apply to the bound ones.

Yup, any boosts to your one-handed skill from levelling, potions or enchantments affect bound and normal weapons equally. The only thing that's different is you can't grindstone improve a bound weapon, which is a negligible difference early, or to anyone who doesn't do smithing, but a huge difference to a master smith.

Tried it, but would rather just play Dark Souls. I like the epic power you wield in Bethesda games.

Downloaded that monster and had trouble loading it, so I wandered off to something else.  Sounds like it's worth looking into.

Became a Vampire now what? I played this game for countless hours and always avoided becoming these blood sucking scum. Thinking maybe I should embrace it?

The only two achievements I don't have are the vampire and werewolf ones. I just liked my character build and wanted to kill things in my own way.

That's a hell of a challenge. Never considered it and wouldn't even know how to start. But now I'm interested.

You just need the spell and enough mana to cast it. The spell can be bought from Phineas Gestor at the College if you have Conjuration >= 40, or you can find it in the wild. I think it's always at one of the forts, but I forget which one. It's an Adept level spell so you'll want the Adept Conjuration perk to be able to cast it cheaply (although even discounted it will suck up a lot of mana).

OK, picked it up this morning for XB1 - $30 for the download.

What mods are must have on XB1?  Also any game of thrones mods?  I beat the game when it came out originally, want to play it as Jon Snow now.

I walked into Whiterun and was attacked by a Vampire master.
ah. I would go ahead and start the dawnguard quest line  if you want to stay a vampire then. Vampire lord is better then being a regular vampire. maybe save before you enter the dawnguard castle in case they attack you.

@AcerFC

If you want to know where to find the bound bow spell for free:

It is at Fort Amol, in the prison, under the lantern in a bucket in the room as you first enter the prison

Had a couple.of hours to kill last night. So I did the Barrow outside Ivarstead. Got to the last chamber. Bunch of skeletons and draugurs. Put on a bow clinic. Shooting from a hidden position took out all of them one shot. Even made some long distance shots. I wish you could record these it was a thing of beauty. I was pretty proud of myself. I think Lydia was a little impressed but she'd never admit it.

You can.

Learn something new everyday. Not sure I would have gotten the whole thing but still that would have been cool. Unfortunately Lydia and I moved on so it's to late for this one. I will definitely try this the next time I'm awesome or maybe the next time I do something so stupid you have to laugh. Use the latter as a knowing is half the battle type PSA.

Anybody playing the remastered game and feel underwhelmed? Im a little gun-shy after buying the Bioshock "remastered" which wasn't very impressive.

Is there a permadeath mod?

Not at all, with all of the mods now it's a lot of fun. There are mods that make it more difficult but not sure about a permadeath mod. Smoo posted about one of the harder mods available up thread.
