256.8 or 12 - Drive-By Truckers - Ronnie and Neil  (Concept Concept)

The DBT's Southern Rock Opera is a rock opera about Southern Rock. Like a lot of concept albums, it's more song cycle than operatic libretto, covering the duality of the Southern thing while growing up in Alabama during the age of George Wallace, Bear Bryant and Ronnie Van Zandt.

"Ronnie and Neil" is part of the album's prologue.

Now Ronnie and Neil became good friends their feud was just in song
Skynyrd was a bunch of Neil Young fans and Neil he loved that song
So he wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
But Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the Lord

And Neil helped carry Ronnie in his casket to the ground
And to my way of thinking, us Southern men need both of them around

Ronnie and Neil Ronnie and Neil
Rock stars today ain't half as real
Speaking their minds on how they feel
Let them guitars blast for Ronnie and Neil

Roll set 1
Die rolls: 401, 564, 220, 834
Roll subtotal: 2019
Roll total: 2019
Perilously close to the 2020 roll total

Featuring... (Songs with Guest Shots)

Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar (Rock Instrumentals)

XMU Rocks!!! (21st century Alt/Indie but not too quiet/twangy for KP)

Velvet (pop vocalists)  - fifth roll

Elton John and Leon Russell did an album together in 2010. I like most of it but this song was my favorite.

Glad I didn’t save it for you then.
I was aware they did an album and I even saw them perform stuff from it on SNL. But I never caught wind that Neil had anything to do with it. I wasn't visiting any Neil forums, nor doing much in the way of keeping up with any of the music industry around then.

Round 256.Bonus Not On Spotify But Nothing Else Will Do

Category: Featuring

Song: Control

Artist: Big Sean ft. Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica

Lamar steals this song.

https://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/best-ever-rap-songs-features-2284065
In this vein, I think.. I always really liked

Bonus - Clique - ??? (feat Kanye West, Jay-Z,  Big Sean) - featuring?

...in case it's not clear, I have no idea who this song is officially credited to, but I like it.

I accidentally went in Tim's 1981 thread and holy ####, I'm going to find a new way to get banned, aren't I?! :sadbanana:
I made two comments trying to reel it in a bit. I'll say that. One of them was a "Hey guys" disguised as a Go-Go's comment, the other was just a "hey...ease up a lil'."

Let Floppo do his thing. That'll end it.

❤️

Tim is great. Those lists can be fantastic methods for reflection and discussion, regardless of whether I agree with the choices...which I usually dont. I don't tend to get involved in most, because I know most of both will be about times/things I don't have a connection with...but 1981 was a giant year for my own personal musical growth and discovery, so it felt personal.

When he started the thread, I started my own hastily culled playlist of tunes that I loved at the time or found later. I didn't really know what reggae was until 82 and I've only grown to genuinely like punk as an adult...but post and new wave were my thing, as was newly discovered college radio and thumbing through bins at different record stores for bands heard there or just covers and arrangements that looked interesting.

Not much if any thought went into it and it would take me a lot of time and energy to sort the tunes into even a subjectively ranked list, let alone the quasi objective thing Tim seems to try with these. I give him full credit and respect for doing it. And I'm sure some of my tunes might be off a year.

Here's the 1981 playlist, if interested.

And I still have no idea what's going on here. I honestly thought it was schtick.
