When I posted Joan's version in my 1975 countdown thread, there were people who had no idea she did it before Judas Priest.

We've never flagged a pick when someone else's version of the song has been drafted before.
1- Even I knew it was a cover back in the 80's when I first heard it. Had no idea who Joan Baez was at that time though :bag:

2- that's why I mentioned it didn't matter

Been trying to go all female on this page of my notebook.  Evidently women aren't quite as into the concept albums.
I've got one for you. The album this is from is her take on Romeo and Juliet. The character based on Romeo is a bisexual female and the Juliet character is the male. I've liked this song since I saw her perform it on SNL but never knew about the concept album thing until today.

Round 278:

Concept Concept

Joe's Garage -- Frank Zappa

As I mentioned a few pages back, Zappa would have preferred to write, arrange and perform only instrumentals, but couldn't if he wanted to sell to the rock audience, so when he had to write lyrics, he made them as absurd as possible. So as you might imagine, the libretto for his concept album Joe's Garage is really out there. I'll just leave the short version of the description to Wikipedia:

The story is told by a character identified as the "Central Scrutinizer" narrating the story of Joe, an average adolescent male, from Canoga Park, Los Angeles, who forms a garage rock band, has unsatisfying relationships with women, gives all of his money to a government-assisted and insincere religion, explores sexual activities with appliances, and is imprisoned. After being released from prison into a dystopian society in which music itself has been criminalized, he lapses into insanity.
Oh yes, and it has a song about prison sex a decade and a half before Tool made that a thing.

The title track is the best-known and most accessible song, so that's what I selected. The lead vocal is by Ike Willis; about 15 years ago I saw him perform this with Zappa tribute band Project/Object.

@krista4is right. ilov80s took it in round 137 for Outlaw Country.
Oh jeez. I knew the notification of both of you quoting me meant bad things. I knew he'd taken it, but for another draft, I thought. So that was my error. And I wasn't going to pick it because of recency, too. Should have gone with my gut about unwritten rules and the song I really wanted to use (instead of adding a necessity to the playlist), which was...

Round 278.xx

Category: Bob Dylan Radio

Song: Corrina, Corrina

Artist: Bob Dylan

A traditional one for the station. I guess we should picking uniquely Dylan songs, but I happen to find this song with a seemingly simple blues riff and progression brimming with a deep complexity in its understanding of what sounds good and what sort of lyrics are inviting to the listener.

Far out, man. Far out. :)

Love it. Except for its sadness. But other than that, love the idea. Zappa for President, man!

Standards have always been part of Dylan's repertoire, from his early years as a folksinger, to a pair of albums in the early '90s, to his recent interpretations of the Sinatra and Christmas songbooks and whatever else.

Oh yeah, no doubt. Just giving a slight apology for not picking an original and then proceeding to pick a standard. But yeah, his first album is full of them and he always did them.

The Christmas video he appeared in was a song Krista alerted me to, and it was hilarious.

I know I have a storyteller one somewhere deep inside the recesses of my heart, but not sure I can...oh, here we go. Just with names that are represented by general terminology, a nod to the archetypes they're narrating. Several stories, including a generalized interlude.

Gentlemen, he said
I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards
But Eden is burning, either getting ready for elimination
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards
