4.14 King of the World -- Steely Dan

Countdown to Ecstasy is an album I have always found fascinating. Steely Dan is known for being hyper-perfectionist in the studio, not caring about touring, and finding new ways to merge jazz and pop. But in their early years, they pretended to be a real band. For Countdown, the Dan's second album, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen deliberately wrote a bunch of songs that they thought would translate to the stage, as they knew they were going to be asked to tour to promote the record. As a result, Countdown is by far their hardest-rocking album, yet retains the intricate arrangements and jazz touches that were a hallmark of their career. 

Not surprisingly, teenage me LOVED this album and it remains a favorite to this day. I even wrote to one of the Philly FM stations about it in the late '80s. They had a feature where on Sunday night, they would play an album in its entirety that was requested by a listener. There was no infernet so you had to write them a letter to make a request. I wrote in with the case for this one, lamenting about how they never played anything from it except My Old School, and particularly extolled this track, the album closer. And they played it! 

The guitars from Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Denny Dias are astounding, so nimble and yet so rocking. The lyrics, which seem to be describing some sort of apocalyptic landscape, are insane even by Becker/Fagen standards. Songs like this are the best kind of stimulation for the brain and the gut.

Footnote: In 2010 I saw a Steely Dan show with a "rarities" theme. They played 5 of the 8 songs from Countdown to Ecstasy. 😃 But not King of the World. 🙁

I think I missed my window, but if tomorrow goes well with work and I really have an open slate Friday I may engage and try to catch up. I've been wildly unproductive this week and should have locked into this Monday. Just didn't hit me until there were no sports tonight and I looked at the awful football schedule coming up. C'est la'vie

The group of drafters is, if we assume demographics are similar to fantasy football message boards as a whole, almost entirely made up of white men who were in their teens, 20s or early 30s at the height of grunge. ANYTHING is going to get a raw deal vs. Lithium.

Covers channel

5.04 You're No Good -- Linda Ronstadt 

She didn't write, so her entire catalog qualifies for this channel. This is her best record, and IMO towers over all other versions (the most famous of which before hers was by Betty Everett.) Peter Asher's hyper-detailed production style serves her and the band extremely well here.
