It was easier for me to keep track of what was going on when I held the dice. I'm having a harder time keeping track of days, rounds and categories now.  Hopefully this is because of proximity to the dice instead of general mental decline.

I didn't know what to do either. I was just going as if it was a chain. I figured having Rick Rubin as the producer could lead to good stuff, but Dr. Octopus went a good route with Queens, NY, too. I think everybody just bailed. I was exhausted and laid down for a bit. It wasn't you, it was just the tiredness and I'm sure that went for most everybody (that it wasn't you, but some other circumstance).

I agree!  It was fun anyway; I read the original post the way Eephus intended, but then when people got into the chains I thought that was a good time.  I was going to participate but just petered out myself.

The Wrens didn't stick around long enough to be associated with any scene.

Emo as a genre is easier to stereotype than define.

It's not that they didn't stick around, it's that they didn't produce much of anything. They existed between 1990 and 2019, with long hiati because of record company shenanigans, failed negotiations, writer's block, "loss of confidence in the new material," most of the members taking day jobs, and finally internal infighting. 

 
I'm listening to a playlist right now that I put together based on a Genrepalooza, maybe even this one though I don't remember since it was so long ago that it started.

It's Frightened Rabbit.  And I know that Northern Voice is the one who introduced me to them, and I associate them with him so strongly, though I also know The Dreaded Marco has been a big fan, and maybe others.

Anyway, he and I don't get along at all these days, but I wanted to acknowledge how profoundly I'd been affected by one of these drafts.  I almost can't stand how much I love this band.  Not having known of them or seen them before he died is a huge regret, though I wonder if I could have felt even more devastated by his death if I had.  As it is, I can't listen to The Modern Leper without breaking down, every time.

It's all heartbreakingly beautiful.  Thank you to NV for that.

One of my nephews is starting his first day of class in London today. He is taking an accelerated 3 week course for college. He left last Thursday, but ended up just an hour 1/2 away from home, because his connecting flight got cancelled due to bad weather. He left again for London Saturday night, and made it there yesterday. His luggage is still "somewhere," but hopefully getting there today. His brother did a whole semester in Manchester in 2019. I hope my nephew has a great 3 weeks.

I am still crazy busy so I’m not around as much but I check in from time to time—not posting very often though (never really have posted much). 
 

I’m glad you discovered Frabbit and love them as much as I do.They indeed were great to see in person.  I cried the day he died. First “celebrity” death that affected me that much. 

 
567.  David Bowie - Beat of Your Drum  (Good Song, Bad Album)

Bowie's 1987 album Never Let Me Down isn't among his best.  The collection of songs is on the whole stronger than his other 80s clunker Tonight but some unfortunate production choices drag the whole album down.

I like "Beat of Your Drum" in spite of its gigantic drums and saxophone solo.  Bowie's crooning on the verse and the abrupt transition to the up tempo chorus make the production excesses worthwhile for me although it's still about a minute too long. 

The album was extensively rearranged in 2018 for a Bowie 80s box set.  I don't know if Bowie had any input to the project before he died but the new version of Beat of Your Drum was a major improvement on the original.

the album it was culled from - "Pleasant Dreams" - is easily a top 3 offering from them, imo ... some days it's actually my favorite. 

most compelling and intricate output from the bruddahs, featuring the most melodic Johnny playing of their entire oeuvre - and some stone classics ("Airwaves", "9 to 5 World", "KKK", "Sensation")

but the real gem for me, and one i return to constantly, is Sitting In My Room ... perfect.  

sure, the lyric expiration date has long since passed for me ... or has it?

Live, in the last chorus he would sing the call letters of a radio station in the market wherever he was playing instead of W.O.L.D.

I made a playlist of French language songs the last time we went to Paris in 2015 and have been adding to it since.  It's now over 100 songs in length. Whenever I hear a French song on the radio or movie soundtrack that I like, it gets added. I'm rarely in the mood to listen to French music much less six hours of it but it's become a force of habit.

Circling back to this as the Spotify algorithm is playing a Teenage Fanclub song for me.

My thing with Grand Prix is that the first two songs are exceptional -- you could even make a case that they are the best of the band's career -- and the rest of the album doesn't really come close to them. Bandwagonesque and Northern Britain are more consistent.
