Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

There's a fairly big artist that hasn't been picked yet that kind of surprises me. I'm sure there's others but one that I have in my top-15 that has zero votes so far.

ETA - I will say their catalogue isn't very deep so that could explain it some.
We're only 8 songs into this thing - I'm sure there's a lot of artists that haven't been picked, but will.

Sure, but we discussed Zep for a long time until they were picked - this artist isn't close to that level of talent but not far off. Just surprised and couldn't remember if we are supposed to discuss artists not picked yet. I'm sure I read it but my memory is ****.

It's perfectly fine to mention whom you're thinking of. I'm guessing Van Morrison?

LOL - no but I should have been. :lmao: I think I just assumed he was gone.

I'm happy to let others take a guess if they care before I reveal it.

Dog Days Are Over -- Florence and the Machine (Don Quixote). They emerged after I mostly stopped paying attention to new music, so I'm not as familiar with them as I should be. I have some friends who are really into them. Intense and moving.
Happy to see this down as a new one and liked it. I do like their stuff and considered putting down something that was not quite as ubiquitous (like Shake It Out) as they are close to each in my rankings of favorites of theirs, but ultimately gave slight edge to Dog Days because it was the one that first introduced me to them.

(ETA: Although just listened to Shake It Out again and if doing it today, I think I'd have Shake It Out here instead. Snapshot of my mood on whatever day I submitted, I guess.)

I'm curious which Lloyd Cole song you would have chosen. If you give me the initials, I'm sure I can figure it out quickly. I invested heavily in the LC catalog back in my CD days.

A Cole song with the initials F.F. made my long list

Cole chat is allowed; this was the only song to make the countdown.

I've always loved how "Forest Fire" builds and builds culminating in a simple but perfect guitar solo. I also appreciate Cole pulling back the curtains on his songwriting secrets when he reveals a forest fire is just a simple metaphor for a burning love

So a quick word on my selection today:

The Assembly was a temporary project by Vince Clarke upon leaving Depeche Mode and prior to forming Erasure. I believe they only produced one song, the one I selected. Fearghal Sharkey, best known as lead singer of The Undertones, was hired to be the vocalist.

I first heard this song right around the year it came out, 1981, from a friend who was a huge Undertones fan. It’s stayed with me through the years and I was delighted to find it again on iTunes.

Sorry if this has been answered already but I'm trying to link Alexa to Spotify to play playlists - it's impossible to get it to understand this long *** playlist name (no offense Hawks) but I can't get any playlist to play although it plays Spotify fine. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

I never narrowed it down but would have chosen from this list:

My Bag
Jennifer She Said
Butterfly
Downtown
Don't Look Back
I mostly dig the earlier work with The Commotions, but he has dropped gems throughout his career.

Two of my other favorites are Perfect Skin and Mister Malcontent, the latter with a definite nod to Simple Minds.

Yes, I had Perfect Skin on the list as I typed it out but removed it because I knew I would have chosen the others sooner.

So I had a few issues with this and Alexa before. First, make sure you're copying the playlist into your Spotify. If that doesn't work, I've had to unlink and relink my Spotify in the Alexa app and then it started working correctly. I can certainly shorten the list name but it may not help your situation. I just tested it and it works by asking Alexa "play playlist Brit Invasion Top 31 number XX"

Hippling back to food. Best thing about using a Mexican mow and blow crew for the week isn't the great price. It's this one guy's wife sending home made grub for all four of them. Me, the boss, is offerred leftovers. Yesterday, I declined. Today I just couldn't. Scarfed the last two chile rellanos that were about the best I can remember and and cleaned the last of some amazing cheese enchiladas from the pan. I'm understanding siesta time, atm.

What's the right play here. Give this amigo $20 for his wife or just accept the kindness?

I'd offer the cash, he'll likely decline it but I'd still offer it.

Oh, and I didn’t look at your top 15 to make my guess so don’t even know if he’s in there. I suppose I could figure out which artist you’re referring to if I looked at your list. Smacks of effort, though.

I’m the queen of over-tipping but in this instance would accept the kindness. Would probably offer something non-cash back the next day. Flowers to give his wife or something.

The Animals

Nine-Point Selections:

New Binky the Doormat: No More Heroes - The Stranglers
I've liked all the Stranglers songs picked so far.

worrierking: Boom, Like That - Mark Knopfler
I feel better now that Knopfler approves of my footwear choice of Crocs

titusbramble: Red Alert - Basement Jaxx
So many jams.

simey: Linger - The Cranberries
Never really cared for the band but this is a lovely song.

Don Quixote: Dog Days Are Over - Florence and the Machine
Lou didn't go for this at all. Every day is a dog day when you're a dog, how about Florence is over.

timschochet: Never Never - The Assembly
Don't think I've heard his one since the 80s. KITS Live 105 "rock of the eighties"

Yankee23Fan: Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
Happy to see this one break the Zeppelin duck. The Brown Bomber was the first album bought by 9-year old Eephus. I've listened to it more than any other LZ record.

Hawks64: Roundabout – Yes
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there. What else would a mountain do?

jwb: Cruel Summer - Bananarama
@ditkaburgers will feel so vindicated.

DrIanMalcolm: Hysteria - Def Leppard
Another Def Leppard song I liked. What is happening

Dr. Octopus: War Pigs/Luke's Wall - Black Sabbath
I don't listen to much Sabbath and I probably wouldn't listen at all if it wasn't for this board but man, this is a powerful song.

Manster: 6 Underground - Sneaker Pimps
I had this on cassette as part of the soundtrack for The Saint. Good times.

scorchy: The Concept - Teenage Fanclub
Such a great song. It was hard to boot the Fannies off my list. It somehow manages to combine Big Star and the Jesus & Mary Chain yet sound completely original.

Sullie: The Politics Of Dancing - Re-Flex
I used to dance to this at the I-Beam on Haight Street.

Mister CIA: Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
I've loved this record for going on 40 years and I still don't know how one would go about reading Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance. Great band.

Mrs. Rannous: Close My Eyes Forever - Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne
Big time power ballad. Does an effective job of building up drama before the drums drop. More synthy than I anticipated.

higgins: No More Tears - Ozzy Osbourne
Back to back Ozzy. What a gloriously ridiculous over-the-top production.

The Dreaded Marco: Swamp Thing - The Chameleons
I always get them confused for the Charlatans becaues of Mark/Tim Burgess and the unfortunate UK suffix over here. I think I like this band better and they're the only one of the two that I've seen play live. It's too bad the Strange Times album isn't on Spotify.

simsarge: Mustang Sally - The Commitments
The song loses a little without the visuals. Director Alan Parker was very good at using music in his films.

landrys hat: When The Sun Hits - Slowdive
If Trip Hop is the worst genre label, then Shoegaze is the best. I turned this one way up.

zamboni: Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want (instrumental) – The Dream Academy
I listened to the instrumental on YouTube. The cor anglais was nice and fitting for this thread (unless it was an oboe). Still prefer the original, even with Moz.

Doug B: Wasted Years - Iron Maiden
Of the bands that are outside of my normal wheelhouse, I think I've enjoyed Iron Maiden and Def Leppard the most in this thread. This sound just jumps out of the speakers.

Ilov80s: Hounds Of Love - Kate Bush
10/10 love this so much.

Val Rannous: Kiss Me Deadly - Lita Ford
It's got a cool beat, you can dance to it. Also, congrats to the Rannouse household for coordinating your song selections better than my family.

Chaos34: The Card Cheat - The Clash
Great deep cut off of London Calling. I've always thought this was the one song off the album that anticipated the direction the band would take with Sandinista.

Chaz McNulty: St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion) – John Parr
I never realized John Parr was British not that I've spend much time thinking about him.

Zegras11: Pride (In The Name Of Love) (live in Tulsa) - U2
U2 just released a new version of this song. I don't think it adds anything to the original version or the live one off Rattle & Hum but at least they've used the correct time of day of the MLK assassination.

I'm running out of steam but like the Depeche Mode, Adele & JAMC songs and love the Nick Lowe, Gabriel, Oasis and Zombies.

I’m the queen of over-tipping but in this instance would accept the kindness. Would probably offer something non-cash back the next day. Flowers to give his wife or something.

I went with Hawks and offerred the 20. He said no but not as expected. The others pay $3 a day for lunch, but said I can eat for free. She always makes too much. So, not to be outdone by the queen of over-tipping, I gave him 40 and told him it was for all of us for the next three meals. He tried to decline, but I insisted. Can't wait for tomorrow's lunch.

I'd offer the cash, he'll likely decline it but I'd still offer it.
I'm with Krista. If someone wants to do something nice for you, sometimes the kindness thing to do is just say thank you. Also when eating out, your guest wants to buy you dinner. If you don't let them, it can actually cause hard feelings coming the other way. Especially if that person can afford it less. I think maybe they find it insulting that you think you should pay, since maybe they cannot afford to. It can be a tough call, and you may need to use your Spidey sense..

This sounds good.

Family hour

Mrs. Eephus: The Changingman - Paul Weller
I asked her if she had anything to add to her selection and she asked if she can just say Paul Weller is a genius. She added it tells a powerful story of growth but it still is really funky.

I've probably offered this take before on here but I view Weller as the UK equivalent of Tom Petty. Not that he'll have a bunch of different songs in this thread but in the depth and consistency of his songbook and the high level of songwriting craft. Neither ever made a bad album in their long careers. I think Weller has been a little more experimental and definitely has better fashion sense but both Paul and TP are classicists at hear. Weller never broke in the States with any of his bands which is unfortunate but on the other hand, I'm happy to be able to see him perform at the Fillmore rather than an arena.

@ditkaburgers: Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears
She said she never used to like this song until she saw Tears For Fears open for Hall & Oates a few years ago.

Eephus: The James Bond Theme (From Dr. No) - John Barry
With all due respect to Monty Norman who got the composer's credit, John Barry wrote some great movie themes but this is his most famous and greatest. Everything works perfectly together, the low E string guitar line, blaring brass, the string arpeggio and ride cymbal. From the music alone, you can picture 007 sneaking around, kissing the dame and blowing **** up.

Agreed. Next time they come, you should have flowers or maybe some quality baked goods to take home to thank the wives.

Songs On My Original List of 75 that Missed the Cut

Damaged Goods - Gang of Four (KarmaPolice) - Karma Police is back in my good graces. Damaged Goods was #2 in my Classic Post-Punk Countdown.

Just Like Honey – The Jesus and Mary Chain (Oliver Humanzee) - another among my four JaMC finalists that changes based on mood.

Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode (AAA Batteries)

Songs Not On That List But I Still Love Them

Linger - The Cranberries (simey) - Coincidentally, a coworker told me "Good advice, Dolores" after I recommended not letting some minor annoyance linger. FTR - I wasn't the annoyance. We were giving a less-than-stellar performance review and the person pushed back pretty hard.

Dog Days Are Over - Florence and the Machine (Don Quixote)

Never Never - The Assembly (timscochet) - I had totally forgotten about this song. Thanks for bringing it back, Tim!

Swamp Thing - The Chameleons (The Dreaded Marco)

When The Sun Hits - Slowdive (landrys hat)

Supersonic – Oasis (Hov34)

Wasted Years - Iron Maiden (Doug B)

Hounds Of Love - Kate Bush (Ilov80s) - I always preferred this one to the bigger hit.

New to Me Songs That I Liked A Bunch

There's No Way Out Of Here - David Gilmour - I know this was up earlier and I must not have given it the listen it deserved. My bad.

Previously Lauded

Cruel Summer - Bananarama (jwb)

War Pigs/Luke's Wall - Black Sabbath (Dr. Octopus)

Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand (rockaction)

Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe (krista4)

Ok, who's the jerk that's probably going to make me watch freakin' St. Elmo's Fire after the edibles kick in tonight?
Speaking of bad movies that are oddly entertaining.

Never seen it. Is it better than Zardoz?

The USA thread inspired me to watch Less Than Zero which was a big mistake.
We watched a few months back while flipping and it was un-good. Lots of cringe, even without the Mare Winningham granny panties scene.

OTOH, it won't make you feel nearly as dirty as Less Than Zero.

St. Elmo’s is a poor man’s Breakfast Club of the Brat Pack genre IMO.

I like Less Than Zero as a guilty pleasure even if not a good movie - if only due to the presence of Downey and Spader.

I think so but it’s also a type of movie I am more prone to enjoy. My threshold for sci-fi is pretty low- doesn’t take much for me to find it silly. Both have a lot of faults and some stuff you can’t help but laugh at.

OH has a charming habit of turning on the TV, putting it on something I'm not interested in watching, and then going into another room where he gets distracted by something and isn't back for an hour or two. Literally last night he did this with St. Elmo's Fire.

Man in motion indeed.

The playlist wasn't up my alley so much today. I did forget to shout out "If You Leave" as another under-the-radar great song earlier.

Of the new-to-me songs, I had a lot less success than yesterday, though I had fewer than half as many to evaluate today. I liked the Teenage Fanclub song and should probably listen again to see if it can make my playlist. The only two that made it on first listen today were "Madness" by Muse and "The Changingman" by Paul Weller.

I also noted that I should listen to more songs from The Clash, because I enjoyed "The Card Cheat" after previously adding "Complete Control" to my playlist. Had always written off The Clash as being "good but not great" for me, but these two have inspired me to listen more.

I hope I am not stepping on anyone's toes, but I would suggest people also try out the live version of Madness from their Rome concert album. It was a very hard song and version to leave off my list. I think somebody took it in GP4 and I've been obsessed with the song since.

HERE is the video.

I have a Clash recommendation for you, but my notebook says @timschochet will have it ranked very high, so I'll say no more.

Nine-Point Selections:

simey:

Linger - The Cranberries
(new song)

Yankee23Fan:

Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
(new artist)

:pickle::clap::headbang:🍾🥁🎸📣🎉🥳

Andy Dufresne:

Sanctify Yourself - Simple Minds
(new song)

AAABatteries:

Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
(new song)

Oliver Humanzee:

Just Like Honey – The Jesus and Mary Chain
(new song)
Of the songs well known to me by title these are my favorites.

There are a few other songs that I know I know but need to listen to again and several that I do not recognize by title at all. Gonna give them all a listen.

The Animals

Great guess like Krista said but the one I’m thinking of is The Yardbirds.

9 pointers:

Rolling In The Deep - Adele - I was trying to think of the name of that one Adele song I really liked. This is it!
Roundabout – Yes - I love YES
Hysteria - Def Leppard - I liked the writeup on this that @DrIanMalcolm did. I agree - I loved the tempo and sound of this when it came out.
War Pigs/Luke's Wall - Black Sabbath - I missed commenting on this last time but War Pigs is great.
6 Underground - Sneaker Pimps - One of two "new to me" that I'm listing today. I like this.
Sanctify Yourself - Simple Minds - Great 80's tune.
Close My Eyes Forever - Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne - Lita AND Ozzy? Doing a (I think) love song? But cobwebs and graves and stabbings... it's metal love!
No More Tears - Ozzy Osbourne - Same with Hysteria - loved the tempo of this.
Mustang Sally - The Commitments - Best version of this song. Great pick.
The James Bond Theme (From Dr. No) - John Barry - Superb pick - really fun.
Wasted Years - Iron Maiden - I'm going to call out every Maiden song. Besides ineligible-for-both-drafts-so-far Neil, Maiden is my top artist.
Kiss Me Deadly - Lita Ford - Second time for this song.
St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion) – John Parr - Oh wow, John Parr. This was a good song from a pretty nostalgic movie.
Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode - no comment but I really like it.
The Changingman - Paul Weller - second new to me
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears - I have a soft spot for these 80's keyboard/synth songs.
Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe - and my ACE award pick racks up more points
