Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (5 Viewers)

worrierking:

Shoot Out The Lights - Richard and Linda Thompson
(new artist)
Obviously I'm partial to this because Bob Mould covered it. Odd that this is credited to Richard and Linda because I don't hear Linda anywhere. The whole album's about their divorce, so presumably they interacted as little as possible while making it.

The whole album is phenomenal and I could have picked at least a couple of other songs from it. Yes, Linda did not appear on three or four songs on the album, but the ones she sings are amazing.

Shoot Out the Light would have definitely made my list if we were doing 31 UK albums. As it was, "Wall of Death" was in my last five out.

Known-to-me favorites from #20, not including my own pick or Son of a Preacher Man, which (again) is known to be on my list:

Baby Blue -- Badfinger (AAABatteries)
Time of the Season -- The Zombies (Val Rannous)
A Whiter Shade of Pale -- Procol Harum (Krista4)
The Real Me -- The Who (Doug B)
You Really Got Me -- The Kinks (Sullie)
Evil Woman -- Electric Light Orchestra (jwb)
Paper Sun -- Traffic (Binky)
Bitter Sweet Symphony -- The Verve (Shuke)
War Pigs -- Black Sabbath (Scorchy)
And You Bird Can Sing -- The Beatles (Tim)
Sultans of Swing -- Dire Straits (KarmaPolice)
Gloria -- Them (Don Quixote)
Is She Really Going Out with Him? -- Joe Jackson (Cosjobs)
Two of Us -- The Beatles (Zegras11)
Shoot Out the Lights -- Richard and Linda Thompson (Worrierking)
Substitute -- The Who (OH)
House of the Rising Sun -- The Animals (Westerberg)
Watching the Detectives -- Elvis Costello (Ilov80s)

I knew almost everything today -- even OH's pick!

Just getting to listen to yesterday's new-to-me picks today, and the first three all hit my "new-to-me favorites" playlist!

Scorsese made great use of it in New York Stories/Life Lessons.

I remember thinking his segment was excellent (as was Woody Allen's) but recall nothing else about this movie.

I rewatched it recently. Scorsese's segment holds up well and Allen's is better than I remembered although the one gag was stretched even at its 30-40 minute length. Coppola's film was just terrible.

Coppola's film was just terrible.

This is how I remembered it, too.
Coppola's career makes no sense. No idea how you have a run like he did in the 70s only to turn into a pedestrian at best director. He must have used up every ounce of good luck in his body and soul to pull of Apocalypse Now,
In all media, sometimes there are artists who just lose it all of the sudden. That's what happened to Coppola.

And yes, his segment of New York Stories was hot garbage.

ETA: There are those who argue it happened to Rob Reiner starting with North.

In all media, sometimes there are artists who just lose it all of the sudden. That's what happened to Coppola.
Yes, for sure. He was just so good though. Wrote and/or directed Patton, The Conversation, GF1 and 2, Apocalypse Now. In the late 70s, he was probably the king of that generation i (Marty, DePalma, Spielberg, Lucas, Altman, etc). Like you said it happens but man was his fall a massive one.

Baby Blue -- Badfinger (AAABatteries)
Two words: Breaking Bad

This absolutely played a role in me picking it. I like several their songs so they were in contention for getting picked as an artist and then it was a foregone conclusion that this would be the song. The usage of this song in context of the show is maybe the greatest I've ever seen and the lyrics almost sound like it was written just for this usage.

Guess I got what I deserve
...
The special love I have for you
My baby blue
....
All the days became so long
...
Guess that's all I have to say
...
Just one thing, before I go
Take good care, baby let me know, let it grow

 yesterday's playlist

I don't think I shouted out any already-known songs yesterday, so I'll start with a  to spreadsheet maven @falguy for Robert Plant's "Big Log." Loved that album way back when and was happy to give this a re-listen. I'm also happy to see Duran Duran and Pet Shop Boys continuing to get some love.

I added nine songs from this group to my new-to-me playlist!

Technically four were not new to me but were reminders that I should put them on a playlist somewhere:
- "Needles In The Camel's Eye" by Brian Eno, which I might know solely from OH playing it a lot.
- "Let Down" by Radiohead and "I Know It's Over" by The Smiths, both of which I loved years ago but had forgotten about.
- "He Ain't Heavy" by The Hollies, which, sure, is bombastic, but also beautiful. "Bus Stop" was also a fantastic selection yesterday.

True new-to-me songs that got the promotion to my playlist were:
- "Kill Your Television" by Ned's Atomic Dustbin and "Don't Think You're the First" by The Coral - loved the music but didn't love the lyrics on these, so I'll check out more from both of these artists perhaps to find some I enjoy even more.
- "Little Lion Man" by Mumford & Sons - my favorite of the bunch, thanks to @MAC_32 for this one!
- "Stockholm Syndrome" by Muse - third Muse song that has made the playlist! I have a friend who must be the biggest Muse fan ever - follows them around the world seeing their shows - and I should have paid more attention years ago.
- "Daddy's Gone" by Glasvegas - actually didn't totally love this song, but it had enough I liked for me to put it on my playlist as a reminder to check into the artist's other works.

Don Quixote:

Gloria - Them
(duplicate - second vote)
I don’t think I’ve heard the version of this song included in the Spotify playlist — it looks like that is the original B side single; I was just familiar with album version. Fine enough, but I do prefer the album version with things kicked up a notch.

I probably could have gone a dozen different ways with a Them / Van Morrison pick. Some days I just feel like screaming Gloria.
Yeah what is that? This is post Van Morrison, not sure who the lead singer is. It’s definitely inferior.

A few favorites from round 20, not including repeats or the Foursome:

Paper Sun
Shoot the Lights Out
Side
And Your Bird Can Sing - Two of Us
Spanish Bombs
You Really Got Me
Total Eclipse of the Heart
Veronica - Watching the Detectives
My Finest Hour
Substitute - The Real Me
House of the Rising Sun
Care of Cell 44
So Alive
Baby Blue
A Whiter Shade of Pale
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

New to me favorites:

Homicide - I like the song, but not the band's name. Yikes!
Little Willy - This sounds familiar.
She Said - I was surprised when the guy's voice came in all of a sudden, but I love the music in the song, and I like the female singer.
Local Boy in the Photograph
Let Her Go -
Gettin' Tighter
Showdown
Born Slippy - dig the drums

My special shout-out today goes to @Chaos34 and "So Alive" by Love and Rockets, though I'm a little afraid to give Chaos the special shout-out since last time I did, he came in and dissed his own song. This song still sounds fresh to me, and I love it as much today as I did when it was out.

That dis was mostly tongue in cheek. I do love that song, but since I wimped out and chose artists more than once, another U2 song is certainly more deserving. I feel the same about Charlotte Anne and the Beatles. I picked posers when the real deal had more to offer.

So Alive

Bauhaus guitar master and goth rock co-founder, Daniel Ash, is one of my favorite musicians. I praised his dickdale-ish background shredding in the chosen Bauhaus song (Mrs Eeph - The Passion of Lovers). Dave Navarro and John Frusciante (two more of my favorite guitarists) name Ash as a primary influence. His taste in music evolved. He fell in love with a concept - rock/dance fusion. Formed Love and Rockets and basically put his Tele down. Wiki says, " Love and Rockets' fusion of underground rock music with elements of pop music provided an early catalyst for alternative rock." Later in the 90s his tastes would again change as he fell in love with "the future of music" - techno/edm. He became a big influencer in that stuff too. Three different genres have his DNA all over the foundations. He's the underground Velvet Underground.

In 2016 he released an album (Stripped) that updated a bunch of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets and other tracks from his early days. By update, I mean EDMing them. I nearly went with the '16 version of So Alive. Give it a listen. It's the first track in the link. Dare ya. I didn't because that techno stuff doesn't play well here, but it is in heavy rotation in casa chaos. Lil chaosburgers is all in. Shame she's too busy/lazy to join us.

The original I chose has a good beat and you can dance to it. I don't say that lightly. It is my favorite song to dance to. it makes me dance. I chair danced to it while making the list. And it's damn sexy; which is something else I like in music. One day I went to this place that rhymes with kitty bar. This stunning socal beach bunny started dancing in a bikini to So Alive and it motivated her to remove her top. Now that's an amazing song. I would have stuck around for more but the next hottie blasted some Def sugar pouring song and I got the hell outta there. Kidding Val. I like that song too and think the non-chorus staccato lines are just too good.

Oof, it's awful. @Hawks64 , would you mind replacing with this? Thanks!

Twelve-Point Selections:

Pip’s Invitation:

Showdown - Electric Light Orchestra
(new song)

New Binky the Doormat:

Paper Sun - Traffic
(new song)

Best start to a playlist yet. Best playlist yet? For me maybe.

simey:

The Ghost In You - The Psychedelic Furs
(duplicate - second vote)

Seems like old times. We were this close to a double up.
MAC_32:

Side - Travis
(new song)

I like all the Travis so far and alot. Definitely a blindspot for me. Deep dive soon.

timschochet:

And Your Bird Can Sing - The Beatles
(new song)

I finally knew a tim song!!! Funny, I was a 80s kroq junkie and didn't know his 10:15 song. Guess I got to LA too late for that one.

Yankee23Fan:

Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
(duplicate - second vote)

Hatin' on this is just wrong. Like I said in the tl/dr So Alive post. The delivery of the non-chorus lyrics is really good. Turn it up to 11 and find a dancing girl.
jwb:

Evil Woman – Electric Light Orchestra
(duplicate - second vote)

Love every ELO song chosen.
Dr. Octopus:

Spanish Bombs - The Clash
(new song)

Great pick. The Clash were very hard for me. Their "15 minutes" Eeph talked about just wasn't long enough.
shuke:

Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
(duplicate - sixth vote)

Has me leading the contest heading into the backstretch. Doubt it can hold on. I see strong closers coming for me.

ditkaburgers:

Little Willy - Sweet
(new song)

I thought that couldn't be a cover could it. It is! And pretty true to the original. Fun listen. Humor, right? Definitely one of my favorite picks so far.

cosjobs:

Is She Really Going Out With Him? – Joe Jackson
(duplicate - third vote)

Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street. Classic opening line and a little funny, right? Love this one, but I put Joe in the pretentious edgy cool educated category and skipped him. This would be my pick for him too.

Sorry if I left you out. There's some new-to-me to check out. But I love the whole list of knowns.

The Dirty Dozen, starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charlie Bronson, Jim Brown, Trini Lopez, and this soundtrack:

Paper Sun
Sultans Of Swing
Total Eclipse Of The Heart
The Real Me
Time Of The Season
Two Of Us
Substitute
What is this about? None of those songs are in that movie.
You haven't lived until you've heard Ernest Borgnine sing Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Veronica is the one Costello song I do like.
Another shout-out to the selection of "Veronica" as I love the Spike album and didn't expect it to get a selection (plus it's another backdoor vote for Paul McCartney).
This stuff is intriguing, as the battle for which Elvis Costello song I'd select (/try to look cool with) was fierce for me. krista's comment makes me wonder if this is the only time it'll show up (feel free to not confirm either way if you don't want to). Honestly, I'm okay with that, if that's the case, considering it could've been a few other songs. If anything, little comments like this make me glad that I settled on it.

Songs On My Original List of 75 that Missed the Cut

Songs Not On That List But I Still Love Them

Local Boy In The Photograph – Stereophonics (titusbramble) - was hoping Stereophonics would get some love, and my favorite song of theirs to boot.

You Really Got Me - The Kinks (Sullie)

Homicide - 999 (Mister CIA) - classic. was on my original mega-list.

Born Slippy – Underworld (The Dreaded Marco)

Veronica - Elvis Costello (Mt. Man)

The House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals (Westerberg)

Elektrobank - The Chemical Brothers (rockaction)

So Alive - Love and Rockets (Chaos34) - Great song but a totally out-of-left-field pop hit. #3 on the Hot 100 after zero charting singles beforehand and the only one after peaked at #82.

Little Willy - Sweet (ditkaburgers) - Mrs, Scorchy loves this song. I guess her much older sister had the 45, and when my wife was a little kid, they would always play it and dance together.

A Whiter Shade Of Pale – Procol Harum (krista4)

New to Me Songs That I Liked A Bunch

Shoot Out The Lights - Richard and Linda Thompson (worrierking)

Baby Blue - Badfinger (AAABatteries) - I've watched Breaking Bad front-to-back a few times. I guess I never paid attention to the song at the end and honestly have zero recollection of it.

Previously Lauded

We were a wee bit drunk here last night, too. Around midnight OH made a grilled cheese, using a Stouffer's mac-and-cheese as the "cheese."

It was delicious.
Do you ever eat a grilled cheese with pickles on it? It's really good.
On the grilled cheese talk, I put some chopped Hatch green chiles in one the other day — good to add a bit of a kick to it.
I dip my grilled cheese in spicy mustard. Not a euphemism.

I'm guessing this is a joke, but I still have no idea what you are talking about.

There are some songs that are so overplayed but I don't care because they are just that great/offer something new with every listen. This isn't one of those. I don't care if I ever hear it again. Sorry, guys.

Something else we agree on. :hifive:

In grad school, my girlfriend wanted to learn guitar so I bought her one for her birthday. She took lessons from some dreamy long-haired PhD student. One night, she was practicing Brown Eyed Girl and I had to do a doubletake when she was singing the final verse. I looked at the hand-written tablature sheet he had given her and the lyrics were transcribed as:

Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometimes a woman comes just thinkin' about
Making love in the green grass...

I have no idea whether the dude was a dumbass or if he was not-so subtly hitting on her.

FTR: I love “10:15 Saturday Night” but I didn’t select it; that was @rockaction.

I had less luck with new-to-me songs today, with none of them making my playlist. I did enjoy "Local Boy in the Photograph" by Stereophonics and "Crank Resolutions" by Meursault, though, as well as "Born Slippy" by Underworld, which I realized I knew once it came on. I also liked the Deep Purple song "Gettin' Tighter" the most of all of theirs that have been selected so far.

Forgot to mention on yesterday's that I even liked the Whitesnake song and also enjoyed the King Crimson one.

I found where it’s from. Some 1971 album called Them In Reality (after Van Morrison left the band). I was trying to be polite with the “fine enough”, but, yeah, definitely inferior.

Songs On My Original List of 75 that Missed the Cut

Baby Blue - Badfinger (AAABatteries) - I've watched Breaking Bad front-to-back a few times. I guess I never paid attention to the song at the end and honestly have zero recollection of it.
Yeah, I'm in camp vaguely familiar. I am ready for a BB binge.

Working my way through the playlist.

Thinking about it, Electric Light Orchestra was a huge part of my radio experience in pre-teen years. Hardly ever listen to them these days, but it almost feels like unconditional love.

Similar story here. I haven't purposefully listened to them in many years, but today's two songs were a pleasant reminder of how much I'd loved them as a kid.

The diferenence for me today was the ones that stood out REALLY stood out. I listened to all of them multiple times.

HOMICIDE - 999 @Mister CIA I don't know anything about this artist or song, but I found this one funny as well as being a rocking tune. Then I looked at the album cover and was even more confused.
SIDE - TRAVIS @MAC_32 A rarity for me - the lyrics here stood out and is what sucked me in tonight.
GETTIN' TIGHTER - DEEP PURPLE @Hawks64 I was not prepared for that level of funkiness. :fro: Fantastic solo as well.
CARE OF CELL 44 - THE ZOMBIES @zamboni Hmmm is this what The Beatles would sound like if they were good?? ;)
SHOWDOWN - ELO @Pip's Invitation Loved the driving synth tone in this one, and it also had a fantastic solo.

More random thoughts and dumb "awards" probably only I find amusing....

The WTF can't I remember this song award goes to @krista4 . Every damn time I see the title, I think "huh, what's this?" and every time - oh, yeah I love this song. Whiter Shade of Pale is a great track

The please don't let me encounter this song while high award to @rockaction and that Chemical Brothers track. I had listened to a couple of their hits, but I forgot about Elektrobank. Great song, but sober with the headphones on it was freaking me out a little.

The don't tell anybody I liked this, I have a reputation to uphold award to @Zegras11 . I hope people know I am joking when I poke at The Beatles. Even if I gravitate to other bands of this era way more, I am developing more of an appreciation of the musicianship and therefore are liking them more and more. Two Of Us is a tune I don't hear very often, and I think it helped me lean in and listen closer.

Richard and Linda Thompson, Shoot Out the Lights.

Nope. I love that one song, and had I thought of it earlier it would have been a contender to break my top 31. I feel like I'm listening to Hold Steady's grandpa.

Choose Love

Stereophonics, Local Boy in the Photograph

Not my cup of tea and feels kind of tired. Sorry ... I have no idea who liked what, although I'm sure I'll figure out a few along the way. It's better than Styx, way better, I'll grant that.

The Psychedelic Furs, The Ghost in You.

The production quality grabs me by the neck. It's great, so, not for me.

P.S. - I want to like it.
