Twelve-Point Selections: This was one of my favorite mixes. I loved almost all of it but these are the songs I can try to be clever about
New Binky the Doormat: Paper Sun - Traffic
Nice song that sounds more like the members' bands that preceded Traffic than the sound they'd eventually have.
titusbramble: Local Boy In The Photograph – Stereophonics
I love this and most of their first album it came from. This is another band we were able to see play small clubs a couple of times over here rather than the huge venues they played in Britain.
simey: The Ghost In You - The Psychedelic Furs
The Furs at their most melodic
Just Win Baby: Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
Don Quixote: Gloria - Them
Are we sure it's really the same singer or is one of them a crisis actor?
timschochet: And Your Bird Can Sing - The Beatles
There are days where this is probably a top ten Beatles song for me yet it didn't make my top 25 in Zegras & krista's thread last year
Hawks64: Gettin’ Tighter – Deep Purple
Deep Purple was played a lot when I was in high school so I must have heard this song before but I was still floored by the funky instrumental break in the middle.
jwb: Evil Woman – Electric Light Orchestra
Loved this and the other ELO song.
Dr. Octopus: Spanish Bombs - The Clash
The leadoff track of the great side 2 of London Calling. I appreciate Mick's pronunciation of the Castilian 'th' sound.
KarmaPolice: Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits
The centerpiece of the band's debut album is still a career highlight. There was a lot of great music that came out in 1978.
Sullie: You Really Got Me - The Kinks
I love the contrast between the nonchalance of Ray Davies' vocal with the fury of the band behind him.
Mister CIA: Homicide - 999
Oi!! A lot of early Punk was more about the attitude than the music. This song has more in common with mainstream 70s Hard Rock than it does with some of their contemporaries in the Class of '77
Mrs. Rannous: Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler
A little bit of Power Ballad goes a long way for me and this is much more than a little bit. But the song is undeniably a top shelf example of the musical form. I don't remember it going on for seven minutes.
The Dreaded Marco: Born Slippy – Underworld
Now this one I remember going on for seven minutes plus. It's a cool song that sounds about 20% better if there's a strobe light going.
Mt. Man: Veronica - Elvis Costello
Classic juxtaposition of a sunny, up tempo melody with a heartbreaking subject. Its bridge is particularly beautiful. The Spike album is a prime example of CD era excess; there's probably a great 40 minute album in there somewhere.
landrys hat: Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Elton John
Two things can be true: I love this song and the arrangement is kind of overwrought.
rockaction: Elektrobank - The Chemical Brothers
Would sound 50% better with a strobe light.
Hov34: My Finest Hour - The Sundays
Lovely song, lovely band. Probably the greatest Harriet in pop music.
zamboni: Care Of Cell 44 - The Zombies
If I've ever heard this before, I wouldn't have pegged it as the Zombies. Sounds like it came from Southern California.
Doug B: The Real Me - The Who
Quadrophenia is the Who's greatest achievement but it's hard to pick songs out of the whole.
Ilov80s: Watching The Detectives - Elvis Costello
The one song from My Aim is True that hinted at the possibilities of Mr. McManus' career.
Chaos34: So Alive - Love and Rockets
In the main exhibit of the "singer just broke up the band, what do we do now" hall of fame.
Chaz McNulty: Let Her Go – Passenger
@ditkaburgers liked this guy for a minute. During her college years, she skipped classes to be first in line for a show where Passenger opened for Ed Sheeran. She got interviewed for the news and caught a guitar pick. Good times.
Zegras11: Two Of Us - The Beatles
Phase one in which Doris gets her oats
AAABatteries: Baby Blue - Badfinger
Phase two in which Doris bakes oatmeal cookies. I kid, this is a wonderful song.
