Sally Simpson - The Who
(new song)

Dr. Octopus:

Beware Of Darkness - George Harrison
(new song)

Ilov80s:

I Can See For Miles - The Who
(duplicate – second vote)

Special shout-outs today to these "other" songs from The Who, which I prefer to the other two (even though I like those as well). I realize "I Can See For Miles" was selected already, but I was busy with a special shout-out to something else that day. It's my second-favorite Who song, and Sally Simpson is a fantastic one, too.

And of course my favorite George solo song would get a shout-out. I didn't check the version Dr. O selected but hope it was the naked, non-Spectorized one. :)

I’d Love To Change The World - Ten Years After
(new artist)
I've been waiting for this one to drop. It's got a great propulsive rhythm on the verse and that atmospheric chorus :chef's kiss:

To me, it's by far their best record. They were a good band and Lee was a good guitarist, but most of their stuff was generic blues boogie.
Could you imagine this song being released today with those opening lyrics? It would be cancelled before they even got to the chorus for the first time.

The 15s playlist

So apparently the UK artists are much more difficult to get the rights to because we have another song I Can't See My Feelings - Budige picked by @Manster that isn't in Spotify, and I can't find the Live in Boise version of Pictures of You picked by @Zegras11 but did find a couple of different Live versions, so I went with the Live in Detriot.

Pip’s Invitation:

Empty Pages - Traffic
(new song)

My #1 Traffic rotates a bunch. The band has always been very special to me, so I wanted them represented on my list. John Barleycorn Must Die was one of the first cassettes I bought, and it's a tour de force of jazzy rock, which is not the same as jazz-rock fusion. You can't go wrong with any of its six tracks, but Empty Pages has always been a favorite for its compelling melody, Steve Winwood's keening vocal and the fantastic piano solo.

I'm sure you're right. I'm not well-versed in TYA lore, but I always took it as Lee singing it in the vernacular of the day and not in a mean-spirited way. I don't recall any backlash, but I was a kid. I guess, today, he'd have to be ironic or in-character to pull it off. I know that gay folks I knew had no problem with referring to themselves the way Lee did well into the '90s.

Oof. Wasn't expecting a 20min wait out the door at the dispensary at 8am on a Weds. Lol.
These aren’t the stoners of yesteryear who didn’t roll out of bed until noon and were too stoned to remember where they left their Dozer CD. The live resin is the worm and these are your early birds. They probably even have jobs that don’t involve making pizza or selling guitars.

For sure - no doubt Lee was just pointing out the issues of the time, Vietnam particularly. But today it would never get that far to understand the underlying message.

Hawks64:

Don’t Bring Me Down – Electric Light Orchestra
(new song)

higgins:

Shine A Little Love - Electric Light Orchestra
(new song)

These two are on the same album but they could not be any different. Much of Discovery finds Jeff Lynne obsessed with grafting Bee Gee-isms onto the standard ELO sound. Shine a Little Love is the pinnacle of that. It's a dead ringer for a Bee Gees song except for the vocals. And it has many of the strengths of the Gibbs' best work. On the other hand, Don't Bring Me Down is nothing like that at all. It's driven by power chords and is as forthright a rocker as they ever did.

Discovery produced numerous successful singles but not surprisingly, due to its lack of disco touches, Don't Bring Me Down is the one that has endured the most.

For sure - no doubt Lee was just pointing out the issues of the time, including an anti-war protest. But today it would never get that far to understand the underlying message.
Plus no one is doing pop music that way anymore, so there'd be very little market for it. TYA was definitely a child of the era and - IMO - wouldn't make a dent these days.

Interesting contrast in it. On one hand it’s obviously going to get heat for the second line but then it’s going to get a lot of love from the same group for its openly anti-rich, anti-capitalist POV. It’s economically left, socially right. That’s probably a very small sliver of the population.

Just Win Baby:

All I Want Is You - U2
(new song)

I ranked this #7 in JML's U2 countdown. It's an amazing ballad WITHOUT the string arrangement -- with it, it's one of the most gorgeous songs ever produced in the "rock" genre.

Sullie:

Radioactive - The Firm
(new artist)

The Firm was greeted with disappointment at the time because it was nothing like Led Zeppelin or even Bad Company. But if you ignore who is playing and singing, this is a well-crafted tune with sneakily good guitar lines.

Eephus:

Get Started, Start A Fire - Graham Parker
(new song)

This is a nice pop song but I always thought it didn't have much that was distinctively Parker about it. Will be interesting to see Eephus' story behind its selection. When I saw him in Trenton in the early '00s (a friend was the opening act), he didn't play it.

Hov34:

Death Or Glory - The Clash
(new song)

Yet another London Calling song I didn't know if we'd see. The record is ridiculously deep.
jwb:

Rime Of The Ancient Mariner – Iron Maiden
(new song)

@KarmaPolice I know this title as a poem by someone else, but not as a Maiden song.

Chaos34:

There, There – Radiohead
(new song)

One of Radiohead's best and usually not credited as such.

Mrs. Eephus:

Both Ends Burning - Roxy Music
(new song)

In my Last 5 Out.

I was so mad/excited when I saw someone take I Can See For Miles a couple days ago. I thought maybe it was going to somehow not get discussed until my selection. It’s always fun to be first on a song even if being later actually means you ranked it better.

Yeah, in retrospect shouldn't the countdown be a count up? Then the person who had the song ranked highest could be first to discuss it?

Some people were Abbie Hoffman, some others were Forrest Gump.

Regarding my Iron Maiden pick today: It's been one of my favorites since the first time I heard it on the much anticipated Powerslave album. It's a long song that tells the story from the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem of the same name. The version linked (here again) has the lyrics which tell Maiden's version of the tale. If you have 13 minutes and don't mind some (fairly light) metal, it's a good listen/story. I particularly like the drums in this song.

Way ahead of you. For the catch-all I aim to trarget all the favorites with bottom ten picks, and then finish with my favorite Canadian bar bands.

Yep, not a fan of this concept with this many songs. For one, it's just too many songs to get through in a 24 hour period. I've sort of given up trying. And then if someone lists one of your songs a pick or two above yours it's lost. (Until the top 5 or so). I understand the drawback of a draft, but I also miss talking about a song that has the spotlight and doesn't have to share it with 40 other songs. And I sort of miss sniping.

Oh, and I want my Avatar back...

I see we've reached the whining stage. Somehow we avoided this in the US one.

Nothing keeps you from discussing a song you have later on your list. I've done it with songs that I had higher, without saying it's going to be on my list. My pick tomorrow is a prime example. Say that you love a song and why, without doing the silly "wink, wink, we'll be seeing this again" stuff. The latter means that you've (1) revealed the song is on your list without (2) saying anything meaningful about it, which is the exact opposite of what should happen.

Mrs. Eephus' 16 point replacement song

James - Sit Down

She thinks Tim Booth is a fantastic, charismatic front man. The song (which was her second choice by the band without the pesky American guitarist) conveys the joyfulness of the band's music and its lyrics talk about how interconnected we all are human beings.

@krista4 @Hawks64 @falguy
Oh, turns out I know this song. Had no idea it was by the same people who did "Laid." Good stuff.

New-to-me favorites from #16:

Hallowed Be Thy Name -- Iron Maiden (Manster). As I said before, this reminds me of '70s Rush but with better vocals.
Trash -- Suede (Titusbramble). Chaotic but fun.
White Shadows -- Coldplay (MAC 32). Another Coldplay song that is much better than most of their radio hits.

as Uruk stated, I don't think TYA is making political statements here but rather just throwing out the "talking points" that were being bandied about by opposing political/social groups.

I think that's the point. Everyone loves to complain - but no one has a real solution.
