Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

My last 3 picks were either from my wife or because of her.

SLIDE AWAY by The Verve has always been a song that I associate with her. It reminds me of the college years when we were friends. I love that first album, and listen to it a bit, and that song has become one of my favorites as well. It was on my list before I even talked to her about picks. The Oasis pick is a tune that I like, but it's a running joke that sometimes I'd overthink it and confuse that one with as her favorite. When I was doing research the Oasis one kept sticking out to me as well.

HOME by Depeche Mode was one of the surprises for me. I hadn't heard of the song and it's the first one that popped into her head when I asked. @Pip's Invitation hit the nail on the head with his observation about Martin, as when we were talking she said that Martin is her musical soul mate, and she loves it when he sings at the shows. I was going to have Depeche Mode anyway, but my pick was going to be Halo.

FASCINATION STREET The Cure is another of her favorite bands, and this was an instant reaction when I asked for her Cure song. I am not sure what my pick would have been for them.

REUTERS - WIRE @rockaction Another where I wasn't expecting what I hear. I thought Wire was more straight punk, and I am glad it wasn't

IMHO and others, Wire is an art rock band more than they are a punk band. Pink Flag are sketches of pop songs, sometimes fully fleshed out and run to max time ("Mannequin" and "Ex Lion Tamer") while others are heavily condensed and edited punk songs ("Field Day For The Sundays" clocks in at 0:28 and needs to be no longer than it is). Others take an idea and repeat it as the prominent aspect of the song. "Three Girl Rhumba" takes this to extremes with its repetitive guitar riff and run time of (1:23) while Brazil uses a bass line to lead up to a chant that sees the song end in a fantastic climactic moment (it clocks in at 0:47).

Others have done this album more justice than I could because they have a little better of a critical ear than I do.

From Pitchfork:

"Pink Flag was a fractured snapshot of punk alternately collapsing in on itself and exploding into song-fragment shrapnel. The record's minimalist approach means the band spends only as much time as needed on each song-- five of them are over in less than a minute, while a further nine don't make it past two. It's clear you're not getting a typical 1977 punk record from the opening seconds of "Reuters", an echoing bass line that quickly comes under attack by ringing but dissonant guitar chords. The tempo is arrested, lurching along to the climactic finale when Colin Newman, as the narrating correspondent, shouts "Looting! Burning!" and then holds out the lone syllable of "rape" twice over descending chords, which grind to a halt over chanting voices. It's all the bombast, tension, and release of a side-long prog opus in just three minutes."

That's a worthy review and one worth reading. The album is my third favorite of '77 behind only The Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks and The Damned's Damned Damned Damned. Ask me some year which one is the best and my answer generally varies depending on the year and long-standing mood I've been in that year or two. There's a thread I took out back in '15 or so asking whether Wire cut the greatest album ever with Pink Flag. Ask me now and I say it's the Pistols. *shrugs*

Known-to-me favorites from #16 excluding my own pick and all versions of Valerie:

Kashmir -- Led Zeppelin (Worrierking)
The Immigrant Song -- Led Zeppelin (Zegras11)
A Whiter Shade of Pale -- Procol Harum (Zamboni)
Stairway to Heaven -- Led Zeppelin (Chaz)
The Rover -- Led Zeppelin (Tim)
The Punk and the Godfather -- The Who (Doc Oc)
Tempted -- Squeeze (Binky)
Abacab -- Genesis (jwb)
Time -- Pink Floyd (Westerberg)
Day After Day -- Badfinger (Mister CIA)
The Bends -- Radiohead (Ilov80s)
Why Can't I Touch It? -- The Buzzcocks (OH)
Sweet Thing -- Van Morrison (Rockaction)
Destroyer -- The Kinks (Doug B)
Crazy Water -- Elton John (Mrs. Rannous)
House of the Rising Sun -- The Animals (AAABatteries)

Those guys in Led Zeppelin, they might have been on to something.

This is my favorite mix so far. Probably helps that what would've been my number 2and 3 songs are on it along with great deep track from Maiden. I even like @ditkaburgers Scandalous pick, I've drafted it a couple times in other drafts.

Oh man, that pair of Maiden songs. I thought Hallowed would be drafted, but Stranger in a Strange Land was a fantastic surprise. Not sure if @Pip's Invitation has chimed in on his thoughts on these.
I don't recognize them by title. Haven't gotten to them on the playlist yet.

Hallowed Be Thy Name - My high school friends who were into music and metal invariably liked Maiden. I was an outlier. I always wanted to like them, but they were too prog and too sweeping in scope for me. Too operatic, really. But I grew to appreciate them and I dig this song. The riffage here around 1:30 in is killer. Bruce is fine form vocally.
@KarmaPolice Just got to this one. The opening is a bit Spinal Tap-ish (not a terrible thing in my book) and then it takes off like RA said. The structure, cadence and momentum reminds me of early Rush, but with much better vocals. The guitar solos starting around 4:45 are fantastic.

Judging by the production I'm assuming Stranger in a Strange Land is newer than Hallowed Be Thy Name. It's not bad, but not something that elicited a huge reaction.

WHY CAN'T I TOUCH IT? - THE BUZZCOCKS @Oliver Humanzee Again, I just assumed a 6min assault of punk, and greeted with that fantastic bass line.

I just commented to OH that his Buzzcocks selection got a lot of love today, including from me, and he asked me what his selection for tomorrow was. When I told him, he responded with a fist-pump and "YEAH! Nooooooobody's gonna like that one." Then a five-minute description of it (knowing his selections, probably longer than the song itself) that included the words "deeply troubling" and "awful." So anyway...enjoy!

I was not expecting to see three Del Amitri songs but not the one that was played to death on the radio in the '90s.

All three were from the same drafter. I actually enjoyed the first two a lot, more so than today's.
So we've found the British version of John Mayer!

(And I guess we'll see the overplayed song from the '90s later.)

I was fine with today's, though I think Here and Now is by far the strongest of the three.

I do remember Be My Downfall from '90s radio as well -- but it wasn't as oversaturated as the other one.

Nope, that's the end of Del Amitri for the countdown.

Guy? GUYS!?!?!!?

For the first-time in middle-aged-dummy countdown history, tomorrow we will have a quintuple-up for an artist. I don't think we've even had a quadruple-up before. Our first ever(!!!111) quintuple-up will feature four different songs and one Deja Vote.

With this kind of excitement, I can't even fathom posting any other teasers.

WATCH THIS SPACE. Or, you know, that other space that will come after this, except it won't be space so much as a post. Tomorrow, a post. Watch for it, hereabouts.

Correct. Off the top of my head '86 vs. '82? Stranger is on the same album as Wasted Years. It has a special place for me because it was my gateway to Maiden, and I just always loved the bass and galloping guitars on Stranger.

Oh, thank you! - Pip had me worried.

Didn’t we just have a quadruple-up of Zeppelin?

Mrs. Eephus' 16 point replacement song

James - Sit Down

She thinks Tim Booth is a fantastic, charismatic front man. The song (which was her second choice by the band without the pesky American guitarist) conveys the joyfulness of the band's music and its lyrics talk about how interconnected we all are human beings.

@krista4 @Hawks64 @falguy
Replaced in the list.

Here are a few favorites from round 16 not including repeats or the Foursome.

Fascination Street
Day After Day
Destroyer
Sweet Thing
Jive Talkin'
Don't You (Forget About Me)
Stuck in the Middle with You
The Punk and the Godfather
Time
Kashmir - Immigrant Song - Stairway to Heaven
All three Elton John songs. A part of Levon has given me stuck song syndrome for days. Specifically since rock's friend disappeared. As soon as I read rock's post about his friend being a balloonist, the part of the song that goes "Levon sells cartoon balloons in town, his family business thrives. Jesus blows up balloons all day, sitting on the porch swing watching them fly" has been in my head constantly. Now I've just recharged it to run around in my brain today. I reckon I'd rather that swirl around in my head all day instead of other people's earworm of She's so Popular.

A few new to me favorites:

Why Can't I Touch It?
White Shadows
Sit Down
Scandalous - Wasn't sure if I'd like this pre-listen, but it's got a good groove.

I'm sorry that Mrs. E's UFO pick was bounced because I was planning a writeup about how amazed and impressed I was when we first started dating that she loved Heavy Metal. That was unheard of among the handful of Black people I'd known in Wisconsin.

She not only listened to Rock but she'd seen a lot of the bands (including UFO). She was a regular at A Day on the Green, Bill Graham's series of stadium shows at the Oakland Coliseum. Those lineups were stacked. Every now and then we'll hear a 70s band and she'll mention she saw them as a teenager. She's still pretty fascinating even after almost 40 years together.

It's such a good song too. Those guitars.... just everywhere. And I'm glad you posted a small version of your writeup here - she must have seen some great bands.

Somewhat similar... My wife doesn't like "metal", but I found out she really meant Metallica / thrash metal. Being married to me she has no choice but to be exposed to all kinds of metal from time to time, and surprised me by not only liking Iron Maiden but agreeing to go to their concert with me in 2019. And the just picked Hallowed Be Thy Name is now one of her all time favorite songs (me too). She likes Lights Out too.

Big 3 could become the big 3 after today and never look back. I could maybe see 2-3 other artists that this may be (Elton, Radiohead, Kinks) but I'm guessing it's one of the 3.

Nice choice. Love it!

Thanks for all of the love and positive thoughts for Martin last night. Just got update that he did okay over night and around where they would expect a dog to be this far removed from the surgery. I’ll definitely take that and hoping for continued progress today.

I’m glad brought him in when we did, and had the gallbladder removed immediately — it was still intact and had not yet ruptured, which hopefully will lead to a positive outcome for him.
How is Martin?
Thanks for checking. So far, so good. Sounds like recovery still going well — he ate a bit yesterday, and doctor was hopeful that he will be able to come home later today after they run some more bloodwork to make sure numbers still good. Before the surgery, doctor had told us it was 50/50; ecstatic that we are looking on the better side of the 50.

Teddy howled throughout the night. If things continue to go well today, I think he will be happy to get part of the pack back.
To update y’all.. Martin did indeed come home last night! Sleeping away right now, and seems a bit high as a kite from all of the pain medicines.

Thanks for all of the thoughts over the past few days!

I may not be around much through the weekend. I'm getting on a plane to Miami in a couple of hours (Yay!) but only staying for one night (Boo!) because tomorrow I'm flying to the DR for a destination wedding (erg!). To paraphrase the old lady innkeeper in Flirting with Disaster: "I am not all-inclusive people."

I'm also gonna semi-spotlight today's pick a couple of hours early. A much more eloquent and prolific poster recently dropped a mini-treatise about the album from which my song comes. At some point earlier, I think he noted that individual songs seem secondary to taking in the record as a whole. I couldn't agree more. Thankfully, the band in question reworked and rerecorded some of their old their old tracks for a new EP in 1999. The new version is sublime, just building and building in intensity till it makes you want to throw your TV out the window or something.

Cheers!

Really good round yesterday. Some notables:

Jive Talkin' - Not the full on Disco Bee Gees yet, but you can hear where they're going.
April Skies - new to me. It grabbed me right away - good song.
Don't You Forget About Me - big time 80's anthem.
The Punk and the Godfather - nice Who deep cut.
Fascination Street - kind of new to me. I should listen to more Cure.
Hallowed Be Thy Name - already posted about this. Fantastic. And I love Stranger in a Strange Land too. I picked Maiden to squeak into the top 10.
Sweet Thing - Van is just so so good...
Why Can't I Touch It? - New to me. Getting a Television vibe here.
Lights Out - already discussed and disqualified but I'll talk about it anyway because those guitars... (I like the replacement pick too).
She's a Rainbow - I don't know if I commented on this when it was previously picked, but it's a great song and shows the versatility of the Stones.

I'm driving back to Vegas today. Home inspection and title insurance bla bla bla. This time wheelchairguy and both dogs join us. Gonna be crowded and annoying. A note on today's pick. It's trip hop whether you think so or not. It's been on my trip hop play list for 20 years. The guys first showed it to the world in 2000. But they were never happy with it. The song writer labored over it until giving up. At one point he thought he'd lost it (the song). Then one day he showed up at the studio to work on the next album and the producer/engineer had a new mix. Trip hop was hot back then. The band is not trip hop (but this isn't their only one that is to me). The song writer cried when he heard this mix. Said something like he'd dreamed of it sounding this way. They changed nothing, and chose it for the first single on the new album. Layered percussions rule.

You flying out of BWI? Hopefully it's a direct flight, as that's a quick one.

When I was going on the honeymoon with my 2nd wife, she booked BWI to Miami, but not direct - we had to fly to freaking Newark. It was less than a year after 9/11 and getting through security at Newark was a nightmare. One of the security folks took pity on us and drove us to our gate in a cart; otherwise, we'd have missed our connection. I never let her book another flight for us.

Announcer: From Boston Mass, right off the Mass Turnpike, it’s What's The Best Way?
All right, here’s your host, Stanley Sperrow –

Stanley Sperrow: Hello, welcome to What’s the Best Way, the only game show by New Englanders, for New Englanders. Ok folks, ready to play?

Contestants: Aya, aya.

Oof. I avoid connecting through Newark/JFK/LGA at all costs.

I had a nonstop flight to Miami but then AA canceled all those routes from BWI minus the one at 6 am, so got rebooked to a short but annoying stop in CLT.

Same thing happened to the last Air Canada flight I took to Montreal from Bmore.
