Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Don Quixote:

Stuck In The Middle with You - Stealers Wheel
(new artist)

Kudos to Don Quixote for putting this smack-dab in the middle of the countdown.
Haha…. When I mentioned last night that I did mine on purpose for today, yeah, stuck this one right in the middle of my list. Surprised first Stealers Wheel appearance, but maybe some higher up (or maybe this is it for them). Such a good song; obviously now most closely associated with Reservoir Dogs.

I debated going with a different one of theirs
We’re all ears…

DrIanMalcolm:

Valerie - Amy Winehouse
(new song, kinda)

@Hawks64 note that this is the "Back to Black" version with only Winehouse, not the one we've heard a billion times with Ronson.
@falguy , I'm counting this as a different song for calculation purposes.

I pressed for this, because as far as I'm concerned this song has nothing to do with Mark Ronson.

Meantime, where do we see the standings as of now?

The spreadsheet was updated yesterday so won't include today's picks you can check it out here. I update it roughly every 3-4 days. When we get closer to the finish line I'll update it more often

Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
I feel like ranting today.

I get SO freaking tired of comments on this one having the word "overplayed" in them.

First of all, what most of the people who make that claim THINK they are referring to is hearing it on classic rock radio (or they are regurgitating tired **** they heard from others). Classic rock radio wasn't a thing until the mid-80s and, by then, "Stairway" wasn't near the most-played Zep record. I heard "Black Dog", "RNR", "Kashmir", "Heartbreaker/Maid", "Fool In The Rain", and others WAY more than this song (part of the reason is that most are shorter songs and more commercials could be squeezed in). What people are REALLY referring to (even though they don't know it) is the fact that "Stairway" was, for a few years in the '70s, the most-requested non-current on AOR radio stations.

Secondly, if a channel is playing a song so much that it's overplayed, change the freaking channel. Tune the dial to a station that has a 200 song playlist and you get what you deserve. "Free Bird" gets this same false rep, when "Sweet Home", "Tuesday's Gone", "Gimme Back My Bullets", "Call Me The Breeze" got played more on AOR & CR channels.

A record isn't overplayed, it's over-listened to. And there's certainly no excuse these days for an "overplayed" complaint.

All that said, this is a magnificent and iconic song. It deserves every accolade it's gotten.

Zegras11:

The Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin
This is just a bludgeoning, nasty piece of work. I don't give a damn about Plant wanting to be a Viking after reading the Elder Edda on three hits of red dragon. The guitars and drums will change your heartbeat if you listen to it too loudly. I'm convinced Alice Cooper ripped that dynamic off for "Billion Dollar Babies".

This has been your Led Zep Public Service Announcement for today.

Looks like Uruk has a bustle in his hedgerow today.

Seriously though, I fully agree with you. There's a reason it's discussed so much - it's just an incredible piece of work. And it's overblown that it's omnipresent. Most stations don't play it that much - probably for being accused of doing so.

I live out in the sticks and my internet will go out periodically. So, I break out my trusty battery-operated radio that has a receiving distance of about half a mile. Luckily, there's a channel that is similar to the "Jack" format that got hot in the Aughts (also, luckily, I don't have to play it that long before I can stream again). I know I'm going to hear "Bennie & The Jets", "Dock Of The Bay", "Don't Stop Believing", and "Le Freak" every hour or two. I love those songs, but I ain't listening to them 12 times a day anymore and calling them "overplayed".

Drives me nuts, zam. You have to search out "Stairway" to hear it nowadays (really, for the last 40 years). Yet, it's still overplayed. SMH.

Yeah, I don't get this. I literally can't remember the last time I heard Stairway to Heaven. Unless I'm in a bar or at some one else's house I am 100% in control of what I listen to. With streaming services, it's easy to avoid the radio if you want to.

I don't listen to commercial radio any more and cancelled my SiriusXM subscription, so I don't have much of a radio barometer any more. But even back wen I wouldn't hear Stairway as much as people think. My kids would say Stairway is overrated as being overrated.

I love both songs.......as we will see

WTF???? How could @Eephus , Mrs. Ee, and I all miss that one? I have no idea how that could have happened. :kicksrock: Eephus, see if the Mrs. would like another selection to replace this. I'd like to keep our list pristine and Kraut-free.

Working on the playlist now...crazy busy work day :sadbanana:

You're all lucky the Swiss part of me balances the German part.

And then there's the Norwegian part that really doesn't get what's going on.

In your defense I think those lists came in last minute.

They were the last two before the deadline (and then cos the day after). I just went through the correspondence with Ee wondering if we had somehow discussed this one, but we didn't. In my defense, I did catch two ineligibles on ditka's list that came in at the same time. I think I was just sooooo tired of vetting at that point. Might have looked at the wrong UFO song/album. Hopefully we can get a replacement. I'll suffer through recalculating everything since it's my fault!

The sweet 16s playlist.
ETA - the Live Valerie version is the only version by Amy that I can find on Spotify, not on the Back to Black album.

I'll check w/ her when I see her.

Sorry. I was so surprised by the UFO selection that I didn't vet the list properly.

I enjoyed these four NEW-TO-ME's the best of the bunch

The Dreaded Marco: Dear God:XTC

Just as a thought exercise, I'm trying to do my top 31 U.S. songs. It's much more difficult than this was and I'll probably just abandon the effort.
I was a different experience for me. For the US, I had 100s of artists, but not many that were my all-timers. For this one, I have a handful of my all-timers so I had 100s of songs from them, but not as many as others when I started.

I still have 2-3 of my favorites to go for the next one if we do that. Get ready for 31 songs of Opeth!!

I won't name names but I think my least favorite song of the draft came this round.

@zamboni I know Whiter Shade of Pale has been picked a few times but such a classic- wish I had thought of it, absolutely love the organ and the production

@Doug B The Kinks rule. It's awesome how they can bounce from one song sounding so twee and self conscious, then the next song sound so violent and unencumbered

@rockaction Tasty choice for Van

@cosjobs One Step Behind! I totally forgot about that song. So silly :)

I'm hopeful this isn't me, because my song had already been selected twice.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I was nervous about my Rolling Stones song, which you can now see was "She's A Rainbow," and whether people would think it was a dumb choice, so I went back to Dr. O's thread and saw he had it ranked in his top 20 (I'm forgetting now exactly where), so that gave me confidence, even though I also saw there that Pip doesn't like it. Then lists came in with that song on there at least two more times and gave me an extra boost.

This is not always my favorite from them, but my list was, as also mentioned previously, heavily affected by recently doing a power-watch of "Ted Lasso," where this song is used in beautiful and heart-warming fashion. Even aside from that, it's a song I love for the gorgeous core surrounded by so many other interesting musical notions running around it. Kind of a masterpiece IMO.

No it wasn't, I actually thought that was a really smart Stones selection. I always think of the Stones as a bluesy hard rock band and forget about some of their really good psychedelic stuff.

Don Quixote:

Stuck In The Middle with You - Stealers Wheel
(new artist)

I heard about the scene this goes with in Reservoir Dogs. Won't see the movie because of that -- not the song, what happens in that scene. I'm fine with most other Tarantino. The song itself is infectious.

Just Win Baby:

Don’t You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds
(new song)

This song was written for Billy Idol and he turned it down. Bet he regrets that now. Listen to the vocal phrasings, they are tailored to Idol's voice.

timschochet:

The Rover - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

I ranked it #14 in Anarchy's Zep countdown and there are days I would have it higher (Binky: lower). My friend did not rank it -- he only listed two songs from after 1973, In the Light and Kashmir.
Dr. Octopus:

The Punk And The Godfather - The Who
(new song)

Doesn't get proper respect as being one of their best songs.

Sullie:

Breaking Point - Eric Clapton
(new song)

I don't really listen to post-1977 Clapton much anymore, but this is one of the best of that category.

Mrs. Rannous:

Crazy Water - Elton John
(new song)

Side 2 of Blue Moon is incredible. This may be my favorite from the whole record. The rest of Blue Moon gets a bad rap.
Doug B:

Destroyer - The Kinks
(new song)

Another great '80s Kinks song, and another that was played at the show I saw in 1990.
Ilov80s:

The Bends – Radiohead
(new song)

The Bends is not as "impressive" as OK Computer and Kid A, but I find myself listening to it more than those. It's complex but accessible. And the title track is one of my favorites from it.

Chaz McNulty:

Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
(new song)

Zegras11:

The Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

#13 and #11 in my rankings for Anarchy, respectively. My friend had them at #7 and #8, respectively.

Oliver Humanzee:

Why Can't I Touch It - The Buzzcocks
(new artist)

Steve Garvey, who played bass on this track, now lives in New Hope, PA, where Ween is from. I would go see shows there frequently and on quite a few occasions have seen him sit in for this song with various Ween side projects and their friends' bands. Including one show that occurred very shortly after Pete Shelley died.

:hifive:

The song is only 4 minutes long. Too short for Pip.
