Happy Fursday to all who observe it.
Mrs. Eephus: Blacks/Radio - The Psychedelic Furs
@ditkaburgers: Pretty In Pink - The Psychedelic Furs
Mrs. Eephus and ditkaburgers still technically live under the same roof so their Psychedelic Furs cycles are synchronized in a variation of the McClintock effect. I'm going to apply for a grant to investigate this further.
Mrs. E went for a deep cut from side two the Furs debut album. She swears they played this live during a show about a decade ago although Setlist.fm doesn't show that. I have to trust my wife more than the Internet but you can make your own decisions.
The Furs are one of her favorite bands. She's seen them dozens of times, always up front on Tim Butler's side of the stage. Like a lot of legacy acts, they are gracious with their hardcore fans who come out to see them every time. They all say hi to Mrs. E and depending on the stage and barrier situation, Richard Butler has been known to lean down and kiss her hand.
ditkaburgers selected a not so deep cut from the Furs second album. She's seen the movie of course but like her mom, she's a fan of the band and has seen them four times by her count. I never understood why they re-recorded a different inferior version of "Pretty in Pink" for the movie soundtrack.
Eephus: Common People – Pulp
Jarvis Cocker has had a long and decidedly inconsistent career but all the planets aligned for this song, the crowing achievement of Britpop. The lyrics use a posh cultural tourist as a prop to both celebrate and satirize class warfare. Cocker's blase vocal asides in the beginning ("I can't see anyone else smiling") initially set the tone before the song builds to a full fledged anthem by the end.
