Pip’s Invitation:

The Song Is Over - The Who
(new song)

Who's Next was one of my very first favorite albums and often topped my list of favorite albums ever when I maintained it. As someone said earlier, it really is a greatest hits album unto its own -- only the presence of the meh Love Ain't for Keepin' tells you that it's not a compilation. Given that the record, whose brilliance has been opined on extensively elsewhere and about which I don't really have anything new to add, has been very special to me since the earliest days of me beginning to forge my own musical tastes, I felt that I needed it represented on this list. My favorite from the record rotates constantly, and right now it's The Song Is Over, a gorgeous elegy (it was supposed to be the closer of Lifehouse) that captures all the brilliance of the members' playing but puts it in the context of a spine-tingling, subtle arrangement. Pete Townshend's singing on the verses may be the best vocal he has ever done.
Probably my favorite song on the album.
Also helps that it hasn't oversaturated the airwaves like the Big Three of Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes and Won't Get Fooled Again.

I'm not a big fan of The Who but was surprised to see that Baba O'Riley wasn't a hit back when it was released - or wasn't highly ranked in the charts from what I could tell.
Like a lot of classic rock songs, Baba just wasn't very top 40 friendly.

And Jennifer Connelly roller skating to this song might be the most erotic thing you'll ever see. 💘
Just realized the guy there is young Moonlight Graham from Field of Dreams. 👨‍⚕️
Frank Whaley. Also in Pulp Fiction---check out the big brain on Brad. The character's name is Brett but it sure sounds like SLJ says "Brad".

And there's no way in hell that Jennifer Connelly character is going to fall for Frank Whaley, Target shelf stocker.
IIRC Whaley also played John Densmore in Oliver Stone's Doors movie.
I think it was Kevin Dillon. Matt’s brother.

Yes, Whaley played Robby Krieger.

Ah. I knew he was one of the non-Jim Doors.

Pardon me as I am still woefully behind and catching up, but where else would I have heard a sample/cover of the Pet Shop Boys 'Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)?' It can't be this as this is the type of 80's music I do not listen to, but I recognize this from somewhere...and made it almost all the way to the end before I hit skip!

Really sad how things went for him. From roller skating through the cassette aisle with Jennifer Connelly, to becoming a low level drug dealer whose exact name eludes Samuel L. Jackson.

Recent car commercial. Have to research when I get back from errands.

New Binky the Doormat:

Squonk - Genesis
(new song)

One of my very favorite Genesis songs, and one of my top 2 from what may be my favorite Genesis album. Was it my #1 Genesis the day I made my list? We'll see.

titusbramble:

Guns Of Brixton – The Clash
(new song)

This makes at least three unexpected deep cuts from London Calling. That record has incredible breadth and depth.

Don Quixote:

Gimme Some Lovin’ - Spencer Davis Group
(new artist)

On my Last 5 Out.
timschochet:

Loving Cup - The Rolling Stones
(new song)

One of Exile's best tracks and special to me because it has been covered regularly by Phish since 1993. Given previous Stones discussion on this board, I suspect we'll be seeing this one again.

Sullie:

Don't Shed A Tear - Paul Carrack
(new artist)

Another incarnation of Paul Carrack! Is his yacht rock masterpiece eligible?
The Dreaded Marco:

Everyday Is Like Sunday – Morrissey
(new artist)

This is my go-to song for impersonating Morrissey's voice. You don't want to hear it unless we are both drunk.

Almost as irksome to me as the missing apostrophe in Fools Gold is the incorrect use of "Everyday" instead of "Every day." The former is an adverb, the latter is an adjective-noun phrase, which is how it's used in the song title. Plenty of other song titles do this too.

Mt. Man:

Come Dancing - The Kinks
(new song)

Someone, I forget who, really wanted this to appear, and here it is. More proof of Simey's point that the '80s Kinks were a great band even if you weren't aware of their '70s and '60s stuff. This was also a pioneering video, which you wouldn't have expected from a "dinosaur act," but visual art was always important to Ray Davies.

zamboni:

Celluloid Heroes - The Kinks
(new song)

This song evokes feelings for me similar to that of my own pick today (The Song Is Over). At my show in 1990, they teased it throughout the set to mess with us before finally playing it in full during the encore.

Doug B:

Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley - Robert Palmer
(new song)

Hey, another song that Phish covers regularly!

I ranked this #1 in our U2 countdown. This is the first of my #1 songs from previous voting-related countdowns to appear in this one.

Would I Lie To You - The Eurythmics
(duplicate – second vote)
FYI @krista4 this pick was from the 13 point round. When picked earlier it was just "Eurythmics" which I think is correct based on wiki (no The) so I have changed this to match the initial pick for this artist. Likely doesn't matter to you but just so we are on the same page
Now would falguy say something that wasn't true?
Always trying to be a good father figure.

That one is for @rockaction .

I noticed Nights in White Satin on the list. There was a time when I was overwhelmed with stress, and I started getting horrible headaches. I went to the primary Dr, who sent me to a neurologist, who figured out it was stress related, and he sent me to some type of therapist that he felt could help me. The therapist said she was going to show me ways to relax my mind and body. One of the ways was she had me sit in a reclining type chair, and she hooked me up a biofeedback machine, and then she put some head phones on me, dimmed the lights, and then "Nights in White Satin" started playing. The biofeedback machine started showing me go into a state of relaxation. It was cool.

In retrospect, I should have taken the live version from One From The Road in which Dave Davies really airs it out, but it's all good.
The relationship between the studio version and that reminds me of the relationship between the VU Sweet Jane and the live version on Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal. Clearly the same song and recognizable as such, but expanded into something pretty different, with lots of guitar heroics.

Probably a lot of songs like that. There's another one in particular from a solo artist who I *think* hasn't been drafted yet here, so I won't spotlight.

There's one band I'm surprised hasn't shown up at this point. Post-punk genre. Maybe they're more liked than I thought.
or a lot less liked.
Or they have an American drummer or something like that.
They did on a later album. A very famous one, as a matter of fact. But earlier, AFAIK they were all English - at least they aren't on the front page here.
If we're talking Carmine Appice again, it could take days to guess.

The bass player is probably from Zanzibar.
Those pesky British protectorates.

:D I love having to look up words from your posts - it's like having a "word a day" calendar!

That is commendable of you. I am completely copacetic with it.

Just remember not to use big words when miniscule ones will do.

I thought someone might come in and correct me: It was an Allstate automobile insurance commercial.

JENNIFER CONNELLY IS NOT SHALLOW!!! :hot: :boxing:
I must admit, along with Jane Seymour (not Henry VIII's Jane Seymour) and Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Connelly is an all-time celebrity crush of mine.

My top 10 from the 15 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. @Pip's Invitation : The Song Is Over - The Who
  2. Doug : Romeo and Juliet – Dire Straits
  3. @landrys hat : Love Reign O'er Me - The Who
  4. @Westerberg : Tempted – Squeeze
  5. @Zegras11 : Where The Streets Have No Name - U2
  6. @jwb : You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ – Judas Priest
  7. @Chaz McNulty : Tainted Love - Soft Cell
  8. @Mister CIA : Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress – The Hollies

Burger King ad execs confirmation bias is getting tickled right now. The jingle doesn't have to be good. It just has to be memorable.
