Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

@Mt. Man True Faith is probably my second favourite New Order track after the one that was in my last five out. Fantastic band live as well
Agreed.

Have you seen any of Peter Hook’s shows in the past few years? They’re pretty great.
I had tickets to see him in Manchester in May 2020
Damn.

I saw him a couple times in the year pre-COVID. He's playing several shows in the UK in April 2023.

I'm surprised so many people selected Valerie. I figured there would be quite a bit of Winehouse but I thought it would be from her album. I came to Valerie late but it quickly became a favorite. Such a groove. It was my most played song a few years ago on that end of year thing Spotify does.
I was thinking this too, but how much of it was to get Ronson on people's list? I was looking at a couple of his I really liked, but they were "featuring" American artists. I thought about Valerie, but had a Winehouse song I loved more, and honestly didn't look more into Ronson's songs b/c I am not overly familiar with him besides the hits.

Speedrun thru the new songs between games

Pip’s Invitation: Yours Is No Disgrace - Yes
Fender and Gibson have them beat by sheer numbers but no other manufacturer made iconic sounding instruments like Rickenbacker's 12-string electric and the bass that Chris Squire played. It's an unmistakable tone that's central to the band's sound.

New Binky the Doormat: 20th Century Boy – T. Rex
It's been nice to see all the love for the Glam era with Bolan, Mott and Sweet well represented.

worrierking: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Ian Dury
The original Stiff Records lineup with Dury, Costello, Lowe and Wreckless Eric was a murderer's row.

titusbramble: The Riddle - Nik Kershaw
Mrs. Eephus will be pleased. She used to like Haircut 100.

Don Quixote: London Calling - The Clash
The band's mission statement

timschochet: Let My Love Open The Door - Pete Townshend
Somebody should do a thread about Townshend's solo catalog. He's a fascinating mix of defiance and vulnerability.

Yankee23Fan: Your Song – Elton John
This would have been my Elton pick. I like the string arrangement here much more than a couple of other John songs from recent playlists.

KarmaPolice: Slide Away - The Verve
Early Verve, interesting pick. The early 90s were a great era for music. Sorry I had to miss it. Thanks ditkaburgers.

Manster: High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night) - Def Leppard
This has a rawer sound than the songs picked off of Hysteria. It's a lot closer to some of the 70s bands that have been chosen.

scorchy: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - The Beatles
The sitar looks incredibly difficult to play. George's playing of it seems pretty rudimentary but it adds a unique dimension to this song.

As I know some pet support in this thread and the US one in the past, I could use some today. I had three pugs (Bess, Martin, and Teddy). Bess passed away earlier this month — she had a urinary blockage that needed emergency surgery, and her heart gave out during the procedure.

We had to bring Martin to the emergency vet this morning — diagnosis was gallbladder mucocele and he needed emergency surgery to remove his gall bladder. Out of surgery now, but next 24 hours are key to see how he bounces back — hoping for the best and could use some positive vibes for Martin, as could use a positive turn after losing Bess just a few weeks ago.

For any familiar with my run through Presidential bios of every President, they are all named after Presidents and First Ladies. And for those familiar with my real last name, yes, Martin’s name is a nod to Van Buren.

Bess

Bess and Martin
Bess and Teddy (Teddy is still doing relatively fine, although currently receiving treatment for an ear infection)

They are so cute, and I'm sorry about Bess. Sending positive vibes, ear scratches, and tummy rubs to Martin. 🤞🍀

So sorry to hear about Bess and my best wishes for Martin.

I have 3 pugs---Roy (12), Mabel (12) and Olive (2). I've always had big dogs until these 3 and I am now a convert.

Another song which, while I love it, I wasn't expecting to get more than one vote, given how many outstanding Kinks songs there are, and how most Kinks fanatics prefer their '60s and '70s stuff to their later stuff. This has gotta be Dave Davies' most famous composition, yes?
Strangers or Death of a Clown may be more known. I don't know. I love all of their decades of music, but I decided to take Living On A Thin Line, because I was in college when the album came out, and I loved the song and the album. As I said when someone else took it, The Kinks played at my university in support of the album, and it was so much fun. It was the last song they played during their encore, and it was awesome. It was easy for it to be my chosen one.
They played at my university in 1990 and this was in the set, albeit in the middle. They finished with You Really Got Me, I think.

NFL games have a LOT of commercials

Sullie: Flesh For Fantasy - Billy Idol
This song is ridiculous but you have to dig Billy's pronunciation of Flesh. "Face to face and back to back/You see and feel my sex attack" is my next tattoo.

Andy Dufresne: Highway Star - Deep Purple
@Hawks64 this one is missing from the playlist
This was the big album when I was in 9th grade and drinking in somebody's basement was a big Friday night. Good times. Great song.

Mister CIA: What Is And What Should Never Be - Led Zeppelin
My mind was blown at the age of 10 by the guitars bouncing from ear to ear on this song. I've never been the same.

Mrs. Rannous: Bang A Gong - T. Rex
Meanwhile I'm still thinking...

higgins: Earth And Sky - Andy Summers
Summers' Jazz Rock Fusion is better than "Mother". He's a fine player but I think he's overdoing it with the guitar synth.

The Dreaded Marco: Poke - Frightened Rabbit
Lovely song. I should go back and listen through Frightened Rabbit again.

simsarge: The Core - Eric Clapton
Haven't heard this one in a long time. Thanks for bringing it back. It has such a great groove. Like it a lot more than the Cream songs picked earlier. The woman singer Marcella Detroit went on to form Shakespeare's Sister with Siobhan from Bananarama.

Mt. Man: True Faith - New Order
Well finally some New Order. One of the greatest second acts in music history.

landrys hat: Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Well finally some Kashmir. I'd never heard anything quite like it at the time and very few like it since.

rockaction: I Feel Free – Cream
I've already praised one Clapton tune today. I take my coffee black.

Hov34: Somebody Else – The 1975
I Like It When You Sleep... has so many great songs. The band is almost singlehandedly keeping alive the classic British artform of four lads with a cheeky frontman.

zamboni: A Letter To Elise - The Cure
Devastating breakup song. It's not about you, it's about me.

Doug B: Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money) - Pet Shop Boys
I guess greed has been big in every decade but there was a contrast between the 80s and the comparatively altruisic 60s and 70s. This satirical takedown still cuts hard.

Val Rannous: Oh Well Part 1 - Fleetwood Mac
Great song. Based in the Blues like so many songs of the era but Green takes it in new and unexpected directions.

Chaos34: Unbelievable – EMF
Surprise global hit was the commercial peak of the Baggy movement. Very unserious but a tremendous groove nonetheless.

Zegras11: Ticket To Ride - The Beatles
Every little thing fits together so effortlessly: the harmonies, the unusual syncopated beat, the sensational bridge, the weird little guitar line under the "my baby don't care".

cosjobs: Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
I'm always amazed at how the drum part in this song can be so loose yet so locked in.

krista4: Sonnet – The Verve
In the immortal words of LFO "Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets". I think I've always preferred it to Bitter Sweet Symphone but I certainly do right now. It probably would be difficult to actually write a pop song that sticks to the sonnet format.

Mi familia

Mrs. Eephus: Red Skies - The Fixx
The Fixx has been a Mrs. Eephus favorite for the entire 40 years we've been together. I remember her coming back to my place after seeing them open for The Police at the first "New Wave" Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum in 1983. That was an inflection point for the big Bill Graham Bay Area stadium shows although the Clash had opened for The Who the previous year. She's seen them a bunch of times since including once at the infamous SF waterfront dive The Pound.

Red Skies is her favorite Fixx song. It brings back happy memories of summer, dancing and being young.

@ditkaburgers: Last Ones Standing – Example
A poppy UK rapper who caught ditka's ear when she was in college. Like almost all modern dance songs, it has a drop before the final chorus that functions like a bridge.

She was 18 when this song came out. I bet a lot of people have picked songs from when they were 18. I know I have.

Eephus: Sexuality - Billy Bragg
Bragg has fought the good fight for decades with dignity and humor. This one is probably as close as he's ever gotten to a pop song. It made a statement in 1991 as AIDS was peaking in the West. Co-songwriter Johnny Marr's influence is obvious and Kirsty MacColl makes another appearance in the countdown.

About five years I found myself standing next to Bragg at a festival. He was in VIP and I was accompanying Mrs. E in the ADA section after she tore her Achilles. There was a short barrier separating Billy and I but I could have reached out and touched him. I didn't but instead babbled something about how much his work meant to me when there was a break between songs.

back in '81 when I moved out, I got a pug ...he was registered, I officially named him "Douglas J Needsomecash"

hence ..."Doug the Pug"

my sister deserves credit for the Doug part - I knew I wanted to give him a "people" name

what a wonderful dog, he slept with me and got very jealous when I would pitch him out of the bedroom when I had the occasional "guest" over

if I didn't make sure to latch the bedroom door, he would jump up on the bed and pee all over the pillow where my guest slept to cover up the smell

he lived for almost 18 years, and pugs usually don't live nearly that long

RIP little guy

The Dreaded Marco: Poke - Frightened Rabbit
Lovely song. I should go back and listen through Frightened Rabbit again.
It is a lovely song and one of their best. I had a tough time narrowing it down to this one from a couple others. One other favorite has already been listed.

My daughter and I share a love for this band and have seen them together a few times. Such a great live band.

Scott Hutchison was a beautiful human and wrote great songs for this band as well as Owl John and for Mastersystem. RIP.

Only 6.5 new artists coming up tomorrow. So goes the British Isles list.

The good news is that we'll have a lot to play with, as among the already-selected artists we'll have 26 new songs! These will include two new songs each in triple-ups of two different top 10 contenders, as well as a new-song double-up of another top 10 contender. We'll also have a double-up battle between two members of the Eephus family.

In addition, tomorrow will feature a Deja Vote from one of our top female artists.

Honestly, today’s selection might have surprised college-age me the most. (Well, that or having U2 so low, but different subject) Not quite my style then, and a video that Wikipedia rather politely calls "surreal". Long story short, times change, tastes change, and now this one’s here.

#18s
Recognized by title alone: 25
Sounded familiar: 3
Knew from this countdown: 1
Didn't know: 13

Selected Favorites:
Yours is No Disgrace (Pip’s Invitation) - This was almost my pick for the Yes song to include.
Let My Love Open The Door (timscochet)
Showdown (Dr. Octopus)
Opportunities [Let’s Make Lots of Money] (Doug B)
Oh Well [Part 1] (Val Rannous) - Another in the category where I know covers and almost forget the original.

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
The Riddle (titusbramble)
Poke (The Dreaded Marco)
Somebody Else (Hov34)
Sonnet (krista4)

She was 18 when this song came out. I bet a lot of people have picked songs from when they were 18. I know I have.
I mean, I just did at #20. But I get what you're saying.

The song she picked didn't give me a lot to work with and I've barely seen her this weekend.
This might be the only song I've ever liked from Example. Like @Eephus said, it's got a great drop but the way he raps reminded me of when dad would play The Streets as a kid (being white rappers might be their only connection haha). I can't remember how I found it, but in 2010 all I did was comb the Top UK Hits on iTunes, so that's probably how it ended up on my playlist.

Ed Sheeran did an acoustic cover of the song the same year, which I prefer, but sadly it's not on Spotify so I'll have to rely on my illegally downloaded version and this youtube upload: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGE2mwIgRs8

Pip’s Invitation:

Yours Is No Disgrace - Yes
(new song)

Here's what I wrote about this in my 1971 countdown (favorite songs from that year that were not on Tim and Binky's lists):

2. Yours Is No Disgrace -- Yes (from The Yes Album)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fUudna1Xuw

With Steve Howe taking over on guitar, Yes made a huge jump in quality -- and popularity -- on their third record, The Yes Album. The new lineup spent months writing and rehearsing in mid-1970, and the new material bore many fruits from those efforts. Most impressive was the nearly 10-minute opener, which not only contains some extraordinary and fluid guitar work from Howe and some of Chris Squire's most melodic bass playing, but also, in contrast to how the band is stereotyped, took on current events in the lyrics. This is an antiwar anthem, and a powerful one, telling the soldiers that they had no choice but to fight and they weren't to blame for the situation.

The structure of the song is far more complex than what the band had attempted on its first two albums, and consisted of several sections that were developed separately in rehearsals and then stitched together -- but the flow and consistency of the song doesn't make that obvious. It heralded a very high level of composition and performance that the band would achieve in the next 2 years, which remains unmatched by most artists, and which would make them one of the top acts of the decade, even when some of their post-1972 albums fell flat.

I saw Yes in 1987 and 1991 and this was performed both times. At the 1991 show, which featured an 8-piece version of the band (Squire, singer Jon Anderson, guitarists Howe and Trevor Rabin, keyboardists Rick Wakeman and Tony Kaye, and drummers Bill Bruford and Alan White), they opened with a spectacular 20-minute version of this.

I saw this tour as well, the Union tour around Cleveland and the ABWH tour in '89, great tours.

I didn't even realize this was Winehouse and Ronson until Krista wrote to me about it sometime after the draft began.

Chaos34: Unbelievable – EMF
Very unserious

Describes me nicely
Happy to see they made someone's cut. I wanted to make space for it, but in the filter stage it was clearly much more guilty pleasure than favorite.

There is bad blood between these two teams from last year. See below... Had he said something about his dad, he would have been suspended by now. He did get an additional 10 minutes in the box.

I can confirm via the Coyotes that Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras did not say anything about Troy Stecher’s father during their dust-up last night but, per a team source, he crossed the line with “some very inappropriate comments.” Stecher has declined comment on the topic.

Yeah, I saw that Tweet, but not sure how Morgan knows he didn't say it if Morgan himself wasn't in the scrum.

Anyway, back to the countdown. /caseykasem
