Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Thanks for all of the love and positive thoughts for Martin last night. Just got update that he did okay over night and around where they would expect a dog to be this far removed from the surgery. I’ll definitely take that and hoping for continued progress today.

I’m glad brought him in when we did, and had the gallbladder removed immediately — it was still intact and had not yet ruptured, which hopefully will lead to a positive outcome for him.

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Ian Dury (worrierking): This is one of only three Ian Dury songs I know, but I find each of them absolutely delightful. Thanks for the earlier bit of backstory.

Poke - Frightened Rabbit (The Dreaded Marco): Frightened Rabbit are a known blind-spot for me but really, really like this song.

A Letter To Elise - The Cure (zamboni): After the awesomeness of Disintegration, I was really disappointed with the follow-up. A Letter to Elise was the exception. Great song.

Unbelievable – EMF (Chaos34): So 1991. Props to EMF for the Andrew Dice Clay sample.

Ticket To Ride - The Beatles (Zegras11): While I'm on the subject of comedians, I can't listen to this song and not hear Eddie Murphy claiming to be the fifth Beatle, and this was originally called She's Got a Ticket to Ride (And the ***** Don't Care).

As of now (before the 15 point picks) we have 7 selections for Zep with no duplicates and TEN Beatles tunes with nary a duplicate. I believe REM had the longest run in the USA thread. They had 9 if I recall correctly. Wonder how much higher LZ and the Fab 4 will go before we get the first duplicate?

New-to-me favorites from #18:

The Riddle -- Nik Kershaw (Titusbramble). Catchy tune that makes good use of its reggae beat. For clarification, this is the "Wouldn't It Be Good" guy, not the former lead singer of Haircut 100 (Nick Heyward).
Poke -- Frightened Rabbit (Marco). Fantastic use of orchestration and atmospherics. Liked it better than the other FR song.
Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money) -- The Pet Shop Boys (Doug B). I'd heard of this one but not actually heard it. Here you can tell Neil Tennant used to be a journalist.

No Zep today but we will have another new Beatles song without duplication! Coming up in a minute.

I always liked the mini-story Tennant weaves into the lyrics. While his character is a full-of-himself grifter, Tennant made sure to take him down a peg ("My car is parked outside / I'm afraid it doesn't work").

Teasers.

Only 6.5 new artists coming up tomorrow. So goes the British Isles list.

The good news is that we'll have a lot to play with, as among the already-selected artists we'll have 26 new songs! These will include two new songs each in triple-ups of two different top 10 contenders (The Clash – London Calling, Guns of Brixton (new), Career Opportunities (new); The Who – The Song Is Over (new), I Can See For Miles (new), Love Reign O’er Me), as well as a new-song double-up of another top 10 contender (The Kinks – Come Dancing, Celluloid Heroes). We'll also have a double-up battle between two members of the Eephus family (The Psychedelic Furs – Blacks/Radio (Mrs. Ee), Pretty In Pink (ditkaburgers).

In addition, tomorrow will feature a Deja Vote from one of our top female artists. (The Cranberries – Zombie)

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Ian Dury (worrierking): This is one of only three Ian Dury songs I know, but I find each of them absolutely delightful. Thanks for the earlier bit of backstory.
This song is way funkier than it has any right to be.
Was gonna go with a quippy reply involving the title of another Ian Dury song but was afraid to spotlight.

No more Ian coming up, likely because the Blockheads were ineligible.

As I know some pet support in this thread and the US one in the past, I could use some today. I had three pugs (Bess, Martin, and Teddy). Bess passed away earlier this month — she had a urinary blockage that needed emergency surgery, and her heart gave out during the procedure.

We had to bring Martin to the emergency vet this morning — diagnosis was gallbladder mucocele and he needed emergency surgery to remove his gall bladder. Out of surgery now, but next 24 hours are key to see how he bounces back — hoping for the best and could use some positive vibes for Martin, as could use a positive turn after losing Bess just a few weeks ago.

For any familiar with my run through Presidential bios of every President, they are all named after Presidents and First Ladies. And for those familiar with my real last name, yes, Martin’s name is a nod to Van Buren.

Bess
Martin
Bess and Martin
Bess and Teddy (Teddy is still doing relatively fine, although currently receiving treatment for an ear infection)
So sorry to hear about Bess and my best wishes for Martin.

I have 3 pugs---Roy (12), Mabel (12) and Olive (2). I've always had big dogs until these 3 and I am now a convert.

back in '81 when I moved out, I got a pug ...he was registered, I officially named him "Douglas J Needsomecash"

hence ..."Doug the Pug"

my sister deserves credit for the Doug part - I knew I wanted to give him a "people" name

what a wonderful dog, he slept with me and got very jealous when I would pitch him out of the bedroom when I had the occasional "guest" over

if I didn't make sure to latch the bedroom door, he would jump up on the bed and pee all over the pillow where my guest slept to cover up the smell

he lived for almost 18 years, and pugs usually don't live nearly that long

RIP little guy
Sorry for your loss. We've had to put down our last dog and a cat in the last 10 months

How coincidental is it that we had a song called Career Opportunities at the same time as Space Age Love Song, when the latter's video features the movie....Career Opportunities?

And Jennifer Connelly roller skating to this song might be the most erotic thing you'll ever see. 💘

The best version of SALS is, I think, the orchestral one they did with the Prague Philharmonic for their album Ascension.

Never saw that video, but love it.

The original video is so money - that hairdo should be in the Smithsonian for cultural significance.

And Jennifer Connelly roller skating to this song might be the most erotic thing you'll ever see. 💘
Just realized the guy there is young Moonlight Graham from Field of Dreams. 👨‍⚕️
Frank Whaley. Also in Pulp Fiction---check out the big brain on Brad. The character's name is Brett but it sure sounds like SLJ says "Brad".

And there's no way in hell that Jennifer Connelly character is going to fall for Frank Whaley, Target shelf stocker.

JENNIFER CONNELLY IS NOT SHALLOW!!! :hot: :boxing:

Pip’s Invitation:

The Song Is Over - The Who
(new song)

Who's Next was one of my very first favorite albums and often topped my list of favorite albums ever when I maintained it. As someone said earlier, it really is a greatest hits album unto its own -- only the presence of the meh Love Ain't for Keepin' tells you that it's not a compilation. Given that the record, whose brilliance has been opined on extensively elsewhere and about which I don't really have anything new to add, has been very special to me since the earliest days of me beginning to forge my own musical tastes, I felt that I needed it represented on this list. My favorite from the record rotates constantly, and right now it's The Song Is Over, a gorgeous elegy (it was supposed to be the closer of Lifehouse) that captures all the brilliance of the members' playing but puts it in the context of a spine-tingling, subtle arrangement. Pete Townshend's singing on the verses may be the best vocal he has ever done.

IIRC Whaley also played John Densmore in Oliver Stone's Doors movie.

Would I Lie To You - The Eurythmics
(duplicate – second vote)
FYI @krista4 this pick was from the 13 point round. When picked earlier it was just "Eurythmics" which I think is correct based on wiki (no The) so I have changed this to match the initial pick for this artist. Likely doesn't matter to you but just so we are on the same page
Now would falguy say something that wasn't true?

Probably my favorite song on the album.
Also helps that it hasn't oversaturated the airwaves like the Big Three of Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes and Won't Get Fooled Again.

I'm not a big fan of The Who but was surprised to see that Baba O'Riley wasn't a hit back when it was released - or wasn't highly ranked in the charts from what I could tell.

It wasn't released as a single in the US. Behind Blue Eyes and an edited version of Won't Get Fooled Again were.
