Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

I won't name names but I think my least favorite song of the draft came this round.

I'm hopeful this isn't me, because my song had already been selected twice.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I was nervous about my Rolling Stones song, which you can now see was "She's A Rainbow," and whether people would think it was a dumb choice, so I went back to Dr. O's thread and saw he had it ranked in his top 20 (I'm forgetting now exactly where), so that gave me confidence, even though I also saw there that Pip doesn't like it. Then lists came in with that song on there at least two more times and gave me an extra boost.

This is not always my favorite from them, but my list was, as also mentioned previously, heavily affected by recently doing a power-watch of "Ted Lasso," where this song is used in beautiful and heart-warming fashion. Even aside from that, it's a song I love for the gorgeous core surrounded by so many other interesting musical notions running around it. Kind of a masterpiece IMO.
I think I had it at #9. It’s a fine choice. My Stones song is “off the beaten path” as well - although it was already chosen here so…

:hifive:

The song is only 4 minutes long. Too short for Pip.
My song today is 3:32! Though I’m sure there’s a 12-in. remix out there somewhere…

My top 10 from the 16 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. @Chaz McNulty : Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
  2. @worrierking : Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
  3. @Zegras11 : The Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin
  4. @Doug B : Destroyer - The Kinks
  5. @Westerberg : Time - Pink Floyd
  6. @KarmaPolice : Fascination Street - The Cure
  7. @New Binky the Doormat : Tempted – Squeeze
  8. @falguy : Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
  9. @jwb : Abacab - Genesis
  10. @Hawks64 : Paint It, Black – The Rolling Stones
I ranked the respective Zep songs here at #10, #21, and #23 in the Zep countdown... which shows that I rank what I view to be Zep's 23rd best song higher than every other song identified in this round.

I'm sorry that Mrs. E's UFO pick was bounced because I was planning a writeup about how amazed and impressed I was when we first started dating that she loved Heavy Metal. That was unheard of among the handful of Black people I'd known in Wisconsin.

She not only listened to Rock but she'd seen a lot of the bands (including UFO). She was a regular at A Day on the Green, Bill Graham's series of stadium shows at the Oakland Coliseum. Those lineups were stacked. Every now and then we'll hear a 70s band and she'll mention she saw them as a teenager. She's still pretty fascinating even after almost 40 years together.

yeah, my next pick for my Stones choice hasn't shown up yet either - doesn't seem like it will, and it's one of the more played, better known ones ...

I think?

Yes. Schenker left after a while.

Checked this morning on this but then forgot to post it: through today's picks, six of the eventual top 10 songs have been selected. Any guesses as to the four that are missing? (Or I suppose, as to the six that are already here, but that seems less fun.)

Obviously I won't confirm or deny any guesses.
My #1 and #6 songs for sure.

Mrs. Eephus' 16 point replacement song

James - Sit Down

She thinks Tim Booth is a fantastic, charismatic front man. The song (which was her second choice by the band without the pesky American guitarist) conveys the joyfulness of the band's music and its lyrics talk about how interconnected we all are human beings.

@krista4 @Hawks64 @falguy

An excellent replacement! Thanks, Ees.

Huh. I think "Destroyer" is pretty obviously stealing the guitar progression and percussive start-stop element of the rhythm guitar from "You Really Got Me" and using it as the bass line and vocal melody of this song. It's almost impossible not to hear. The meta-comment of "here it goes again" to the "Destroyer" chorus is a meta-comment about letting a monster riff determine one's consciousness, it seems.

Least that's the way I took the song and take it now.

Since I didn't want to call out yet another Elton song (love "Levon"), my already-known shout-outs today were going to go to "Sweet Thing" and "Destroyer" for being excellent deeper cuts from those artists, but now with Mrs. Ee's new selection I'm giving my shout-out to that. Very much liked that band but had mostly forgotten them. That song is one of my top choices for them. Which song got nixed?

Of the new-to-me songs today, I enjoyed "April Skies" by The Jesus and Mary Chain, "White Shadows" by Coldplay, and even found myself listening all the way through "Hallowed Be Thy Name" by Iron Maiden, which I loved for the music but not the vocal. The only song to jump onto my playlist today, though, was OH's selection of "Why Can't I Touch It?" by the Buzzcocks. I'm sure it's not technically new to me, but let's be honest that I've developed a keen ability to tune out his music over the years.

"Sweet Thing" - Van Morrison

I can remember late one night that me and @Ilov80s were quoting the lyrics to this one and riffing back and forth (him off the top of his head me having to look it up a bit) so in it went as the song. Seriously. No other reason that that. Well, the song swells and is gorgeous, but so don't most of the songs from Astral Weeks.

But it's more the pleasant memory of that than anything. See? This board definitely influences me, which we'll see later in the countdown, too.

At a Half Price Books looking at vinyl. Anyone want New Order's Substance for...$150?

WTH?

There's an Echo & The Bunnymen for $60. Duran Duran's Rio for $30...that's not bad.

I knew vinyl was resurgent but geeze.

One of my favorites of today. Probably my ultra favorite besides the song I selected. Oh, and "She's A Rainbow" is a wonderful song. Probably the second best today. I'll get to shout-outs later, I think. Some later night reading for y'all.

I always go for used ones in bargain basement bins. Can often find some goodies for as low as 50 cents.

Discogs minimum is sixty dollars, and that's without checking condition. Usually those will be marked with something. It hasn't been released on LP since 1987, if my eyes aren't deceiving me.

Totally OK to listen when he plays the Buzzcocks. They were not belligerent homeless people.

@ditkaburgers: Scandalous (U.S. Radio Edit) - Mis-Teeq
Another Pop banger from her teenage years. She can't recall if it's the first time she heard it but she always associates it with the 2004 bomb Catwoman with Halle Berry. ditkaburgers was 12 at the time and had made the leap away from kid's movies. She was extra excited because a Black woman had the lead in a superhero movie. 21st century kids are very media savvy so she knew it wasn't good when she saw it but at least she was able to salvage this song from it.

Eephus: Valerie - Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse
Six votes, dang. Maybe I should have taken something off of Back to Black instead.

The 16 point playlist wasn't ready when I walked Lou this morning so I listened to Ronson's Version album. I give him an A-grade for concept; horn-driven R&B covers of mostly recent Indie songs was a brilliant crossover move. He was rewarded with a big hit that grew his reputation. The record hasn't held up for me sixteen years later. Valerie is the standout cut by far. Kasabian and Maximo Park covering themselves and the Radiohead song are decent but the rest didn't click for me.

Bumping this for ditkaburgers

When the Levee Breaks and the Abbey Road Medley are things that I think could be top 10 that haven't appeared yet.

They were homo sapiens too. Homo sapiens like you.

(That's actually a Pete Shelley solo song but it's what came to mind.)

Nice to see Suede, Madness and Buzzcocks show up to the party. Steve Diggle brought a bottle of bubbly but it's just for him.

Haven't heard that Del Amitri track for decades.

The intro for "Stuck in the Middle with You" reminded me another more recent song but I couldn't put my finger on it.

The Bends is a reminder of what a force Radiohead could be when they played rock 'n roll.

Elton John goes into double figures for different songs selected by my count. Maybe he's the English Tom Petty

Okay, song reactions. Today's list is a wonderful one:

Jive Talkin' - What an auspicious start! I remember telling wikkid that my favorite music when I was five was the Grease soundtrack and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. I loved the Bee Gees, I said. He was appalled that a five year-old starts off with disco and showtunes. Guess I was doomed from the start. I think I neglected to mention that five year-old me loved the Beach Boys and Beatles, too. But this is a winner from Pip.

Tempted - This reminds me of the girl next door to me in my dorm freshman year. Lots of Squeeze on the cassette deck or CD player. I was blowing out the DIY punk comps by Rhino and The Go-Go's and Billy Joel (of all artists -- I remember studying for an exam once with it on all night), so that was interesting. Anyway, this is a smooth, easy-listening song.

Kashmir - Dope song. Ocean's Twleve comes to mind every time I hear it now, though. Does anybody get that movie, by the way? I still don't understand the heist part of it. I get that it's an homage to New Wave heist films and French directorial techniques and themes, but I still can't figure out the darn heist.

Trash - Cool track. Suede always gets respect, but I never listen. I should.

April Skies - More great music from some masters of music in general. The DJ never has it/JAMC Automatic. Okay, so it's Darklands, but you get the sentiment.

Don't You (Forget About Me) - Yes, I like the Breakfast Club. It's an enduring memory of my teen years. No, it's not a cinema classic. This is a mighty fine song for the movie, though. Enough synth to make it pop, enough lyrical skill to make it meaningful. Swelling chorus.

Stuck In The Middle With You - Who can forget the scene with Michael Madsen dancing and torturing? That's the scene, right? Ooof. This song swings hella.

White Shadows - I can always get down with a moody Coldplay track (if it's a little upbeat in BPM especially)

The Rover - I've never heard all of Physical Graffiti, and don't know this song. Typical Zep. Which, yes, is a good thing. I wonder where it ranked in Anarchy99's countdown. Oh, okay. I'm about a minute and half in and now I remember the song.

Hysteria - This is synth pop extraordinaire. Mutt Lange must have been on this track somewhere. It sounds like Shania Twain only fronted by a British guy. What that means for country or metal I'll let you decide.

Paint It, Black - What a song. I have nothing to add to it.

Abacab - @KarmaPolice's daughter sure has interesting and developed taste. Good for her!

Valerie - God, can Amy ever sing. This is a wonderful version.

The Punk and the Godfather - I flame out on The Who after Sell Out, but this is a fine song. Quadrophenia is a legendary album. I'll let people who know it and understand better than I comment on it.

Fascination Street - This is probably my fourth favorite Cure song. I love the bass line. What was his name again? My first girlfriend adored the bass player and I can't remember his name now, but he was sort of the bane of a slightly bemused and somewhat (not really) jealous sixteen year-old. I remember thinking he was cool, actually, and anybody who could come up with a bass line like this earned my respect.

All The Young Dudes - More Mott, more me. Love it.

Hallowed Be Thy Name - My high school friends who were into music and metal invariably liked Maiden. I was an outlier. I always wanted to like them, but they were too prog and too sweeping in scope for me. Too operatic, really. But I grew to appreciate them and I dig this song. The riffage here around 1:30 in is killer. Bruce is fine form vocally.

Rid Of Me - Already commented earlier that this was probably my favorite song of my limited exposure to her, but I like the demo that she released properly better than this version.

The Killing Moon - Is this a Donnie Darko song? I think it's a Donnie Darko song. It's a wonderful track, regardless. Hey Pip, I got this movie in my sort of lost years, too. Mine just lasted longer than yours, unfortunately.

Day After Day - Again, had no idea this was Badfinger but have heard it before. What a band!

Okay, that's half the list. Won't trouble you anymore unless I get bored late and want to do the other half.

Got caught up today on the playlists.

From Playlist #16:

BLACKS/RADIO - THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS @Eephus family I thought I new most Furs, but I guess I am not familiar with the debut and this one was new to me.
CEREMONY - NEW ORDER @Oliver Humanzee I d on't know why I associated their sound more more with electronic music. Loved the guitars here.
REUTERS - WIRE @rockaction Another where I wasn't expecting what I hear. I thought Wire was more straight punk, and I am glad it wasn't
SPACE AGE LOVE SONG - A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS @Andy Dufresne Of course I know the hit, but nothing else. Great tune, loved the u2-ish sounding guitar

Random thoughts:

I think I've said it before, but Pretty In Pink the song >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pretty in Pink the movie
Holy ****, is White Room great. Why isn't this on my list?
The same can be said for all 3 songs by The Who on the playlist. Love Reign O'er Me, I Can See for Miles, and The Song is Over?

April Skies - The Jesus and Mary Chain (simey) - Every time I see a new JaMC song here, I think "Damn, I should have picked that one instead."

Stuck In The Middle with You - Stealers Wheel (Don Quixote) - Since the ear scene has already been hit a bunch of times, I'll give you a cover by Eagles of Death Metal instead.

Kiss This Thing Goodbye - Del Amitri (simsarge) - Not sure I could have named a Del Amitri song before this draft - now I've got three.

Why Can't I Touch It - The Buzzcocks (Oliver Humanzee) - So good.

Scandalous (U.S. Radio Edit) - Mis-Teeq (ditkaburgers) - Ditkaburgers keeps dropping all these great pop songs that are completely new to me. Keep 'em coming.

Still tired, but less tired. A day to somewhat relax and listen to great music. Again, I recognized a lot of this. Plus had a few cases of “do I know this? I believe so!” along the way. It can’t surprise me that unknown songs are becoming more of a precious commodity, I suppose.

#16s
Recognized by title alone: 29
Sounded familiar: 4
Knew from this countdown: 3
Didn't know: 8

Selected Favorites:
Stuck in the Middle WIth You (Don Quixote)
Paint it, Black (Hawks64)
Fascination Street (KarmaPolice)
The Bends (ilov80s)
One Step Beyond (cosjobs)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
White Shadows (MAC_32)
Kiss This Thing Goodbye (simsarge)
Why Can’t I Touch It? (Oliver Humanzee)

Wait a second, let me sit down for this. Now what's all this?

I've never sat and listened to Physical Graffiti. I've also never sat and listened to any of the Led Zeppelin albums as albums, aside from Led Zeppelin IV (My friend and I listened to that my freshman year of high school in vacation in Rhode Island, a trip I still remember. Such a cool trip. We listened to that and Traffic every night.)

So yeah, lots of stuff to get caught up on, I'd imagine.

This is my favorite mix so far. Probably helps that what would've been my number 2and 3 songs are on it along with great deep track from Maiden. I even like @ditkaburgers Scandalous pick, I've drafted it a couple times in other drafts.

Oh, man - I have to agree with @Raging weasel here. Outstanding playlist. Some great adds to the new playlist, and of the stuff I knew it was all outstanding picks, some I didn't think would get highlighted.

WHY CAN'T I TOUCH IT? - THE BUZZCOCKS @Oliver Humanzee Again, I just assumed a 6min assault of punk, and greeted with that fantastic bass line.
SCANDALOUS - MIS-TEEQ @ditkaburgers Another fantastic pop/dance tune. I am laughing thinking about GB Raging Weasel dancing around to this track. ;)

CRAZY WATER - ELTON JOHN @Mrs. Rannous Mrs. R is looking to be the winner of this whole damn draft for getting me to add an Elton John track to my playlist. It had me from jump as I was nodding along to that bass and about 30secs in I heard his voice and said "dammit, who got me??!!" Fantastic tune, and I've listened to it a few times now.

Many random thoughts:

I'm not sure what krista was worried about, She's a Rainbow is fantastic. Would make a perfect pair with one of my picks.
Oh man, that pair of Maiden songs. I thought Hallowed would be drafted, but Stranger in a Strange Land was a fantastic surprise. Not sure if @Pip's Invitation has chimed in on his thoughts on these.
I am not sure if she is adding it, but I had to put Abacab on my other playlist. So good.
Today's trio of Zeppelin songs had me cursing myself for not having any LZ on my list.
Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?
Another fantastic surprise to see get some love in The Punk and the Godfather

I hadn't heard that Coldplay song before and I quite liked it. I would guess I am higher on Coldplay than most here. Good band.

Shout out @MAC_32
I mentioned a couple weeks ago that my objective with my Coldplay add was to introduce a good contribution from them to someone unfamiliar with them beyond the obvious. Thank you (and others!) for helping me accomplish my goal. They have quite a few great tracks, but you have to get past the headliners. I had a hard time choosing between 3 songs, so I'm happy to see this resonated with you. I get chills multiple times throughout this track...
