I am not the only vote for this song, but I am the first, so this song belongs to me! Me me me!!! Mine mine mine!!!

At seven minutes, it might also be my longest song. The anti-Pip. Listen all the way through. It picks up and twists and turns and every direction is interesting.
Big fan of this song. One of their top 3 for me.

higgins:

Coming Up - Paul McCartney
(new song)
Wasn't this the record Lennon heard and thought about how great it was - until he learned it was Paul?

 Sort of. The story goes that it came on and he was loving it and then Paul's vocal came in and he said something like "**** a pig, it's Paul!" I'm so happy to see this one selected. McCartney II represent!

Also, @Hawks64 , assuming the live version that @higgins selected isn't on Spotify (it might be - didn't check), I'd suggest using the album version of this song rather than the single. It's a lot wackier.

I don't know their whole catalog, but my favorite of known-to-me Doves song hasn't been chosen yet. I'll refrain from posting about so as not to steal anyone's thunder.

Mt. Man:

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles
(duplicate – third vote)

Chaz McNulty:

Yesterday – The Beatles
(new song)

Zegras11:

Day Tripper - The Beatles
(new song)

Respectively, #2, #80 and #21 on my Beatles rankings.

Just Win Baby:

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
(new song)

[holds up boom box]

KarmaPolice:

Life On Mars? – David Bowie
(new song)

Believe it or not, Phish has covered this too.

zamboni:

Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
(duplicate – first AND second votes today)

I would not be surprised is this is one of the top-10 songs that hadn't appeared yet.

Oliver Humanzee:

Five Years - David Bowie
(new song)

Mrs. Eephus:

Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
(new song)

I took Five Years about midway through the Bowie song draft I did on another board. Rebel Rebel is my #1 Bowie and I didn't get a chance to draft it because it went first overall and I did not have that pick.

krista4:

There Goes The Fear - Doves
(new song)

Oh, the Catch the Sun people. Let's see if I dig this one as much.

Found a live version...not sure if it's the right version or not. Also, if it's a youtube link I never open the links, just use the first song that pops up.

Speaking of live releases ... Peter Gabriel's "I Go Swimming" was an outtake from the Melt sessions that never made the final album. Gabriel frequently played the song concert, however.

The studio version was released once, as a promo single in France (listen here). Tony Levin's live bass work and Gabriel's more centered vocals puts the live version way on top.

Dr. Octopus:

Every Picture Tells A Story - Rod Stewart
(duplicate – second vote)
This song just rocks so hard. It also has some of the most clever lyrics I've come across:

Spent some time feeling inferior
Standing in front of my mirror
Combed my hair in a thousand ways
But I came out looking just the same
Daddy said, son, you better see the world
I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to leave
But remember one thing, don't lose your head
To a woman that'll spend your bread
So I got out, whoo
Paris was a place you could hide away
If you felt you didn't fit in
The French police wouldn't give me no peace
They claimed I was a nasty person
Down along the Left Bank, minding my own, whoo
Was knocked down by a human stampede
Got arrested for inciting a peaceful riot
When all I wanted was a cup of tea
I was accused, whoo
I moved on
Down in Rome, I wasn't getting enough
Of the things that keep a young man alive
My body stunk, but I kept my funk, whoo
At a time when I was right outta luck
Getting desperate, indeed I was, yeah
Looking like a tourist attraction
Oh my dear, I better get out of here
For the Vatican don't give no sanction
I wasn't ready for that, no, no
I moved right out east, yeah
Listen, on the Peeking ferry, I was feelin merry
Sailing on my way back here
I fell in love with a slit-eyed lady
By the light of an eastern moon
Shanghai Lil never used the pill
She claimed that it just ain't natural
She took me up on deck and bit my neck
Oh, people, I was glad I found her
Oh, yes I was glad I found her, woo-hoo
Wait a minute
I firmly believed that I
Didn't need anyone but me
I sincerely thought I was so complete
Look how wrong you can be
The women I've known I wouldn't let tie my shoe
They wouldn't give you the time of day
But the slit-eyed lady knocked me off my feet
God, I was glad I found her
And if they had the words I could tell to you
To help you on the way down the road
I couldn't quote you no Dickens, Shelley or Keats
'Cause it's all been said before
Make the best out of the bad, just laugh it off, ha
You didn't have to come here anyway
So remember, every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it, whoo
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it, whoo
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it
Every picture tells a story, don't it, whoo
Every picture tells a story, don't it, whoo
Every picture tells a story, don't it, whoo

Nice to see some Andrew Lloyd Webber love. I know a lot of people don’t like him but the guy really is genius. Especially the early stuff like JCS and Evita.
I have no issues with him. He composed some great songs. There's something to be said for craftmanship. Folks like Webber, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lieber & Stoller, the kids in the Brill Building, Holland-Dozier-Holland, the guys in Grand Funk. Those songs will far outlive us and be loved and covered as long as humans listen to music.

I love In Your Eyes but... From time to time I hear that rhythmic upper range bell sound a bit too much and find it kinda annoying.
What's Youssou N'Dour singing at the end?

Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir

A rough Wolof translation of part of the English lyrics:

Sa bet = Your eyes
chi lamp = the light in(side).
chi tangaay = the heat in(side)
sa bet = your eyes
maangi ci biir = deep inside, way inside

Known-to-me favorites from #13, not including my own pick or Every Picture Tells a Story, which is known to be on my list:

Gimme Shelter -- The Rolling Stones (Binky)
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding -- Elton John (Yankee23Fan and Zamboni)
Baby Blue -- Badfinger (Simey)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps -- The Beatles (Mt. Man)
Rebel Rebel -- David Bowie (Mrs. Eephus)
Anarchy in the UK -- The Sex Pistols (Don Quixote)
Heart of the Sunrise -- Yes (Shuke)
White Room -- Cream (AAABatteries)
War Pigs -- Black Sabbath (Hawks64)
Day Tripper -- The Beatles (Zegras11)
Life on Mars? -- David Bowie (KarmaPolice)
Oliver's Army -- Elvis Costello (DrIanMalcolm)
Five Years -- David Bowie (OH)
Planet Earth -- Duran Duran (Hov34)

Everything Counts -- Depeche Mode (Tim)
Solsbury Hill -- Peter Gabriel (Chaos34)
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me -- Elton John (Andy)

Still got three selections still to come which may end up being unused artists, but after today my list gets a lot chalkier, at least in terms of artist if not song selected. #1 in particular is a band I expect to end up in overall top ten but if someone picks my track in question I'll be surprised
