Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

Pip’s Invitation:

Suspect Device (1979 album version) - Stiff Little Fingers
(new artist)

As befitting my limited knowledge of non-first-tier British Isles punk acts, I came to this song via Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' version, which was released on an EP in 2005 and appeared in their live sets from time to time.

Stiff Little Fingers were from Northern Ireland and their debut single, whose lyrics were written by their co-manager, journalist Gordon Oglivie, conveyed all the fury and anxiety of a community overwhelmed by The Troubles. There were suspect devices everywhere in Belfast at the time. The rage and frustration are palpable in every second of the song -- punk music was the perfect vehicle to convey it.

The first version of the song was issued in 1978 on the band's own label, and made waves after it caught John Peel's attention. But I actually prefer the rerecorded version that kicks off their 1979 debut album, Inflammable Material, released on Rough Trade. It's louder and beefier and conveys even more rage.

Oliver Humanzee:

Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues - Mclusky
(new song)

I don't know that we're going to top this one as far as song titles go.
When the Stones got sued for owing one more song to ABKCO records when they tried to leave, they recorded a song called ********** Blues, to fulfil their obligations, - with lyrics consisting of "I need my **** sucked, I need my *** ****ed". Maybe that?

krista4:

Sunshine On Leith – The Proclaimers
(new artist)

The first of many Scottish acts on my list - I have five more between my seven- and 20-pointers. I saw these guys play in Boston in 1989 and was blown away. It's a shame they became known for that one song (which is good but overplayed now), when they have so many great ones! Their harmonies are sublime. And speaking of homely but talented folks...

The dummies 28th favorites.

OH’s description of Crass was informative. Like Rockaction, I mainly knew about this band as insignia. I’m also very familiar with one song, not the song that OH chose. I won’t name it in case that’s spotlighting (though it would honestly surprise me if another Crass song gets selected.) But it was part of a British punk rock compilation that a friend of mine played a lot.

Crass chat is allowable. As is Crass chat.
OK then. The song I was familiar with was “Bloody Revolutions”. Haven’t listened to it for years (until yesterday) but I distinctly remembered the woman (or falsetto) in the middle of the song singing “You’re far too much of a man for that”. Great stuff.

Well, I went through all the Radiohead albums yesterday, and I have some hard cuts to start making. Initial gut reaction adds to my playlist had 47 songs just from the albums. No surprise that 3 albums dominated the playlist with 8, 7, and 6 songs from each taken. The biggest surprise for me was the 4th album that also got 6 songs added. :oldunsure: The other 5 all had 4 adds from each.

Now I am going through the B-sides once again, then it's time to hit random on the playlist several times and see which songs don't stack up and attempt to cut 20 or so songs.

Rank all the songs, you coward.

Okay, so I can't write up Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" any better than wikkid could, so I won't really try. Suffice it to say that Amy and I had similar problems with similar substances at the same time and I found her defiant "no no no" quite liberating and funny back then. Her insouciance about her impending reality struck me as a perfect rejoinder to those people charged with making my life not quite such a mess. Almost needless to say, I did not find her death as liberating or funny as I found the track, and I would indeed wind up in rehab later on, a move that probably has saved my life up until this post.

Okay, that went from zero to sixty in terms of seriousness in less than a few seconds, but the above is true.

When I went to see Sir Paul at SoFi stadium last year, when he sang “Maybe I’m Amazed” he displayed the cover photo from the McCartney album, the one where he’s holding a tiny baby. Then he said, “She’s a grandmother now.” That freaked me out.

That pic is on the back cover. :grad: But yeah, that's freaky.

maybe today i'll have time to try and catch up on some of the ones I do not know off-hand.

Dr. Octopus:

Perfect Strangers - Deep Purple
(new song)
I loved how the original band reunited after all those years and was able to put out such a kick *** album. Love the vocals and driving ominous riff that permeates the song.

Yup. Usually when a band does this, the new effort really isn't that good. Not the case here at all. I love this album.

am really digging the harder / metal turn in this round. Just starting to listen now so these are the ones I know right away.

Rumour Has It, Maybe I’m Amazed, Roundabout and I Don’t Like Mondays are my favorites from this round.

I never could get into the Alan Parsons thing.
We don't like dealing in rumor and innuendo in this thread. Why don't you just tell us yourself what your favorite picks of the round are.

I'm still laughing at this, and feeling like a dork.
I have to apologize to everyone for this. I need to ask myself 'how bad is this Dad humor' before I hit reply.

KarmaPolice:

Still Of The Night - Whitesnake

and regarding this song... man, it's a hair-metal masterpiece. I loved the Slide It In album, and was excited for this release. This song leads it off iirc, but also led to a bit of disappointment, because the rest of the album kind of went the power-ballad route that a lot of these bands started doing. Here I go Again is decent, but the rest just didn't do it for me.

But this song... wow.

I like Alive And Kicking in all its iterations. I'm partial to the acoustic version.

Tainted Love is quintessential 80's and I sing the #### out of this song often. Did you know there's a nearly 9 minute version?

I'm unabashedly a fan of a lot of Duran Duran.

Crazy Train off of Tribute was for a long time my absolute favorite song. That version just kicks all sorts of ###. How about an isolated guitar track version?
