Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (8 Viewers)

Who is better, Mick Ronson or Adrian Belew?

For this thread, songs with Ronno will dominate. Fripp and Earl Slick will follow with SRV possibly sneaking in a few licks. I love Lodger more than most but I don't think Belew will be represented; nor will Reeves Gabrels and David Torn.

Actually Carlos Alomar will probably finish second but he's strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing.
About to snooze to Lodger. I love being me.

Sorry not to post any updates earlier. I haven't felt quite right today.

If you guys want a heavy metal/hard rock guessing game, it's fine, but someone else would have to lay out the parameters, as I have no idea.

UPDATES AFTER 20 LISTS

Our #2 and #3 artists switched yet again, and though #1 has hung in at that spot for a while, it is extremely close. This is likely the only time I'll give specific point-values, but our #1 and #2 are separated by only 12 points, 566-554. That's just how close it is going to be. Your vote counts. One of our Big Three has appeared on 19 of 20 lists.

While our Big Three each have more than 500 total points, no other artist has garnered 400 points yet, and in fact only three other artists have broken the 300-point mark, so this Big Three really is shaping up to be distantly ahead of the others. One of the three artists with 300+ points seems to have the most fervent fans, as they are averaging over 24 points per vote received. No one outside of the Big Three is coming close to that average.

Now that I think about it, highest average points per vote would be a good contest for artists.

Not a lot more to say about artists, as they are starting to settle into some tiers without as much extreme movement.

For the first time in one of my updates, we have the same leader for the Ace Award that we did last time! This artist even gained an additional vote for their one-and-only song, as did the current runner-up.

The Genesis vs. Peter Gabriel solo discussion came up at an interesting time, as they were right next to each other in the rankings until the last five lists were processed. Each received more votes in these five, but their order has switched.

I'm tired and feeling feverish and have no idea what to say about the song rankings. There are a lot of votes for a lot of songs.
Hope you're feeling better K4!

Maybe I and only a few others will like it, but I thought maybe another of the guessing contests could have to do with Hard rock/Metal artists?
In general, I am going to try to be more involved in the guessing games, and selecting faves from each round. And you know I def dig the idea of a rock/metal one. 🤘
When thinking about it, IMO there is the core 3 for metal in this one. If others are in agreement about that, we could do similar to our general guesses- top point getter song for each of those 3, and/or what the next 3 or artists will be for the genre as far as total points.

Metal may do surprisingly well. I hope so - I like Metal a lot. Especially 70's/80's.
:hifive:

Can’t You Hear Me Knocking has been my #1 Stones song at some points in my life. Was that the case the day I submitted my list? We’ll see in January or February.
It would be my #1 Stones song too, but the Jazz odyssey knocks it down a few notches in my rankings.
This. Probably a few notches down from where it would go for me too.
Random comment that may only be interesting to me - Glass Onion the movie was better than the song. And I love the song.
Krista's reaction

I saw "Knives Out" on a plane and was underwhelmed. Is this one considered to be better? The original was really well received, though, so I guess that was just me.
I liked them both, probably equally. Daniel Craig is having a lot of fun with that Foghorn Leghorn accent he's putting on.
One more before moving on: this Wiki list is what we've been using and will continue to do so.
I've run across this phenomenon with the North Mississippi All-Stars. Probably why, whenever the question is asked, who is the most talented band, NMAS and Los Lobos are always the first to that come to mind.

ETA: Three-hour live show, if you're into that sort of thing.
Edit Part Deux: best part (...if Duane Allman and Dickey Betts made a baby)

Oh, are you a fan of the NMAS as well? I really do like their sound.

At least the food is better in Spain than in Ireland

I actually had a Spanish waiter refuse to serve us food-to-order and insisted we eat it the way the chef had prepared it. He also wouldn't serve me a large helping of frites, but rather a small or medium one. I wasn't that overweight, either. He just didn't think it was appropriate for one person. I almost threw a chair at him to bridge the language gap.

*******.

I was tempted to bring up Franco and the Civil War, but we have our own political problems at home, so I thankfully (for me) bit my lip.

OK Ireland is better for heaping helpings of potatoes

In Ireland, you can carb load to your heart’s content. I remember my wife ordering an entree that included three different kinds of potatoes as sides… fries, a baked potato, and potatoes au gratin. That seemed a bit excessive, but no complaints were made.

I would love that. Mmm...carb load.

Oh, that was funny. That'll be two Eggs Mayonnaise (or whatever he says), one Hermann Goring...

This post lands at random and is not targeted to anyone in particular, but the last few pages seem to be getting close to spoiler-y. Guesses at what the group might like are welcomed and encouraged, but specifics about your own list, including songs or artists that didn't make it, should generally be avoided, in my opinion.
Oh, no. I guess I shouldn't mention that "Don't Stick Stickers On My Paper Knickers" didn't make the cut.

I don't remember ever listening to Technical Ecstasy before, so I tried that today and the follow up album. I sort of wish I could unlisten something.
Not terrible, but just a very stark difference in the opener to their S/T and Back Street Kids.

I am a NMAS fan. It's been a good while since I have kept up with them. I might be pleasantly surprised if I go check out what they've done during the past few years

I doubt anybody else was eyeing 80s instrumental banger "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag" but I'm afraid Pigbag is ineligible. The curse of the drummer strikes again; Brian Nevill was born in Germany to a German mother and British father.

Where and when in Germany was he born? I can't find that info.

While some are favoring more hard rock and metal in this countdown, I'm finding that my list is almost embarrassingly soft in comparison to my US one. Lots of strings and earnestness.
I feel like a lot of the brit pop selections I will have never heard of.

Setting aside the obvious, my list is disproportionately representing a period 1998-2005ish, which was also my time of most intensive and extensive musical exploration, as well as my fondest music-related memories (and probably fondest life memories). I didn't realize until now how deeply affected I still was by that period. You probably won't like most of it. But maybe you can be convinced on a little. :)

Geez, the "favorite song" competition right now is a ****ing blowout. If everyone submits who said they would, we're less than halfway through, so I guess it could change.

Wow. I figured the biggest artists would have a lot of songs represented, which would spread things out, but then again, a squillion Stevie Wonder songs showed up in the US countdown and Superstition still won the favorite song competition.

Yeah, exactly what I thought, though I was surprised about "Superstition," too.

Were Queen eligible, I would have pegged them for top song honors. Not sure which song could be running away with this.

Yeah, seems like that would be a good guess if they'd been eligible.

We're obviously talking about "Fat-Bottomed Girls," right?

I'm a Tenement Funster guy.

Damn really? I love that song. I also love two other non-Freddie songs: “39” and “Sail Away Sweet Sister”

I've had an idea of what song this is. It's on your list. It'll be on mine, as well.

Stumped. I can see a couple of my songs cracking the top 5, but not sure one would be consensus #1.

... except for maybe that one.

My guess for top song would not be one of the big artists.

Discogs lists Nevill as Anglo-German and when digging deeper, it turns out he wrote a memoir in 2013 that talks about his father staying in Germany after WWII.

But fear not because Nevill wasn't the drummer on "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag"; he joined the band shortly after it was released.

Speaking of formatting, another request... I learned that in order for falguy to work his spreadsheet magic, it would be really helpful to have all capitalization the same. Therefore I'm now going through and changing all capitalization to be consistent on every entry (fun!). To make my job less strenuous on future lists, please just initial cap each word of your song titles, whether or not that looks "wrong" (and it does to me, often). No all caps, no complete absence of caps, no random caps. It's not required and I won't send lists back to you if you don't do it, but initial cap everything would be really, really great.

Excel's query editor should be able to take an ill-capitalised list, split it by whatever song/artist delimiter someone is using to get a column for each, Make The Artist's Name Look Ridiculously Unnaturally Typed, then stitch it back together without a bunch of manual editing

Bohemian Rhapsody?
Queen's best? Oh, yeah. My Queen favorite? Absolutely not. This is probably one of those ask me a different week and you may get a different answer's, but right not it's Crazy Little Thing Called Love and the others in consideration are not Bohemian Rhapsody.
