Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

So many songs on these playlists now, it's hard to shout-out all the good ones. I am going to TRY to narrow down my favorites to 5 new to me or great surprises each time. Just know that there are very few skips for me in these, I generally like everything the rest of you are putting in there, and even narrowing it down to 5 was tough.

These are in no particular order, probably just how they came up randomly on the listen and how I wrote them down:

THIS IS A LOW - BLUR @Dreaded Marco (huh, he didn't come up either) I haven't been a fan of Blur, but this one was a very nice surprise!

NEAT NEAT NEAT - THE DAMNED @Mt. Man I joke about The Beatles and Elton John and such, but honestly, what I am least looking forward to is the possible heavy mix of punk in the draft. I've tried many times, but most doesn't click with me. The guitar solo was awesome, and really dug this one.

NOWWHERE GIRL - B-MOVIES @Zegras11 Never heard of the band or song. Loved the mix of synth, driving bass line, and otherworldly guitars.

YOUR GIRLFRIEND - BLOSSOMS @ditkaburgers I will be honest, I didn't think I'd be liking many of your selections, but you proved me wrong right out of the gate. Fantastic pop ditty.

LIGHTS - ELLIE GOULDING @MAC_32 What the ****, man?? This might have been the surprise of the draft. I equate you with more of the rock tunes that we generally seem to snipe off each other. I don't look at who drafts what until after I get through the mix, and was very suprised this was attached to you.

Loved the Shadow Dancing, Is She Really Going Out With Him?, and There She Goes picks, and those stood out to me from the rest of the great mix.
Lol, glad you enjoyed it. Ellie's vocals are the star of this show. And this could absolutely be made into an outstanding hard rock cover.

IMO the NFL is already a fairly poor product to watch now, and that only adds to it.
Link? (Other than Brady)
Just my opinion. I can't get through an NFL game anymore. I can't remember the last full game I watched - probably the ATL/NE Super Bowl? I find it mostly dull as I get bombarded with commercials, replays, and long stretches between plays.

Do you watch NCAA football? That's the one I can't tolerate, for the most part.
Even in my prime football obsession years, I never got much into watching NCAA besides catching a few Badger games here and there.

My 1st choice is NHL, but that got so hard to even find, I've lost touch with that. I used to watch damn near any hockey game I could consume, and spent many a late night in HS and college watching OT hockey games. I've found myself watching a lot more Premier League and other soccer, and I am now way more into MLB because of DFS and fantasy leagues.

MAC had a great and surprising mix of songs in the US countdown, too.
I definitely have a type, but think I'm comfortable veering to all genres as long as it was released after 1989 or before 1980.

Maybe your stash can help with this?
I've tried, and no it doesn't. I was hyper focused on dumb little things on the sidelines and laughing at how much NFL players flop on the ground after missed ints or look around like every missed catch is holding - stuff like that.

It mostly helps with cheesy 80s movies.

Red Zone channel resolves that, but the Sunday, Monday and Thursday night games do seem worse than ever. And their schedules (especially Thursday night) were horrible.
I am a stubborn ***, so: 1. I am not going to pay for that, and 2. IMO if you have to purposely take out all that b.s. to have a consumable product it proves my point.

Oh! I also noticed that tomorrow, an artist takes a commanding lead!
I knew there were more Coldplay fans!!!!
I don't remember if it was you or Pip, but whoever liked God Put A Smile On Your Face is gonna get exposed to at least one more good Coldplay song. A handful of others I hope the peanut gallery pulls into this thing too. I can't stand mainstream Coldplay, but they have some gems littered throughout their first few albums.

Red zone is really cheap. And it's a much better value than paying $10 a month to Spotify to made their content presentation tolerable.

I don't mind Coldplay, even a few of their hits. I had several of their songs written down and like most of the first 2 albums.

ETA: It will blow my mind if you end up taking my personal favorite of theirs. Not sure I've seen it pop up in any of these adventures.

Their 2021 album was very good. The ten minute epic Colortura was one of my favorite songs of the year.

I generally try to stick to favorite instead of getting cute, but while I bent the rules a nudge for them I still hemmed and hawed between several options. Ultimately, my goal was to introduce good Coldplay to someone that doesn't like Coldplay.

I've rode this hobby horse for a long time. I choose Google Music over Spotify years ago, and I was gradfathered with YouTube music (basically same music catalog as Spotify) with 100% ad-free you tube.

Pros: Ad-Free Youtube
Cons: Joe Rogan is paywalled

They still were an odd choice for Super Bowl halftime

Same. I love having ad-free youtube. A few times I hit a yt link and for some reason it doesn't automatically sign me in, and oof the ads are annoying. Also, I like Coldplay, but I think my top 3 are other bands covering Coldplay songs.

And it’s hard to not have a man crush on Scott Hanson.

Also tomorrow, our second double-up battle! Which two people will have different songs from the same artist, and which one is better?

San Antonio in the house

EDIT: Guessing that is Augie Meyers playing keyboards. Circa 1997, I stood behind him at the register at a used-CD shop; he was talking about some recent gigs up in Massachusetts. He was a mountian of a man, probably 6'6".

EDIT2: Freddy Fender and Flacco Jimenez are awesome too. What a band!!

Feed The Birds - Julie Andrews

If I'm being honest, when I started putting my list together this song wasn't on my radar. For I guess obvious reasons, it's not something I listen to often although after thinking through this writeup maybe I should.

I mentioned in the American songs thread that my family are huge Disney fans - the parks, the movies, etc. Mary Poppins is my favorite Disney movie. I watched it as a kid with my mother, I can remember her singing the songs. I've watched it with my kids over the years. We ate at the Disney breakfast where Mary comes to your table. We've toured around the UK at Epcot and gotten pictures with Mary and Bert. And we also loved Saving Mr. Banks which is the story of how Walt made Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins is a little dated and a little sappy, but we still enjoy it and I look forward to one day watching with my (not yet existing) grandchildren.

But that's not why I included it in my list. The brilliant Sherman Brothers wrote what is said to be Walt's favorite song. The soundtrack is one of the most famous of all time, but this song seldom gets attention. This simple song tells some of the greatest life lessons I've ever heard:
  • Be kind.
  • Be charitable.
  • Be generous.
  • Be empathetic.
  • Be humble.
This song makes we want to be a better person. I always fall short, but I strive to be like the bird lady. When Mr. Banks is walking to the bank and thinks of her you can see him realizing all the mistakes he's made. I have to admit I cry every time I hear this song - it's hauntingly beautiful and somber.

Walt Disney's Favorite Song

Feed the birds from Saving Mr.Banks
I reckon, as a Disney nerd, you know who the bird lady is. Jane Darwell also happens to be one of Mr R's favorite actresses. She is just amazing in The Grapes of Wrath.

Straight To... Number One - Touch And Go

Mrs. R! You naughty naughty girl. God, I love that song. Never expected to see it here. Didn't know Touch and Go qualified. Wouldn't have used it, but hot diggity, I've played it in certain situations many a time and it is a highlight of my naughty naughty boy playlist. Love a raunchy sax. Val chose wisely.
Oddly, we both picked songs from shows that were on HBO. He chose The Sopranos theme, and I went with "Straight to... Number One (Duck's Radio Mix)" from G-String Divas. I do love that fat horn sound.

Straight to No. 1 by Touch and Go was new to me and really liked it. It was fresh but classic at the same time.

Well Mrs R chose a more musical "mix" which doesn't have my raunchy sax. This version is the original and on my playlist...

I like the jive beat the mix has. I do also like the original.
