Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

This round was weaker than the first two based on my taste.

I'm not seeing as many already-knowns that I like in this round, either, but I look forward to listening to those that I don't know. Setting aside those I've already mentioned in prior rounds, my favorites here are "There Is A Light that Never Goes Out" by the Smiths and obviously "Imagine." Also a special shout-out to the Pet Shop Boys! Guilty pleasure for me.

ETA: Damn it! "Pink Moon," of course. That's my winner.

There is a slight talent gulf between those two artists. Plus, almost any guitar player can look cool in the right setting. Gentle keyboard playing is another story.
Absolutely but Dire Straits were kind of older when they broke through to the MTV generation. Knopfler was late 30s when Brothers in Arms hit and they became music video stars. Squier would have been an easier sell. I think we actually on what we are saying.

I will explain in my post later
Stand By Me didn't match us? Or was it because I didn't specifically say that I love it?
Two

Totally whiffed on Sweet - made me smile seeing them selected. Ballroom Blitz is a fun song.
I've heard this song before, but before 3 minutes ago couldn't tell you anything beyond that. **heart** By far the best new to me so far.
It was 60/40 picking Ballroom Blitz over their other hit.

Three-Point Selections:

jwb:

Love Is Like Oxygen – Sweet
(new song)

simsarge:

Fox On The Run – Sweet
(new song)

@Mister CIA - which was it? I was thinking Fox but honestly could have gone either way.

ETA - I have further comments but don't want to spoil anything.
Love is Like Oxygen.

Love is Like Oxygen.

That simple little guitar riff... so good.

Pip’s Invitation:

Child In Time - Deep Purple
(new artist)

I cut you all a break by picking a song that only takes up HALF an album side.

We go from a song that sounds a bit like Deep Purple to Deep Purple itself. This tune is absolutely haunting and I have felt that way ever since I first heard it on their 1988 live album Nobody's Perfect. That version made my hair stand on end, and that's with Ian Gillian at diminished vocal capacity. The original version on Deep Purple in Rock is simply astounding (as is its first live release on Made in Japan). This song is the counterargument to anyone who tells you that prog is devoid of emotion.

Tomorrow I will have a song that is the diametric opposite of my first three picks.
🎧

Listening now. Deep Purple was a whiff for me. I think I saw a few names for the partial eligibility list and crossed them off mentally and forgot to go back to double check which albums were good.

This song could go on for 30mins and I'd be happy. Amazing tune.
Christopher Cross-over

The curly-haired yachter could really shred.

They had at least three “big” videos from the Making Movies album prior to Brothers in Arms.

“Tunnel of Love” was played every hour on MTV it seemed.

So was “Skateaway”

Love is Like Oxygen.
Love is a many splendored thing...Love LIFTS us up where we belong...all you need is love.

(Anyone...? :oldunsure: )
Sigh, yes, and I just saw that annoying director's latest movie, Elvis, which manages to both be an hour too long and gloss over some very important stuff that could have used more in-depth exploration. Pastiche-y, crammed with nonsense, and is it possible that Tom Hanks actually sucks in this movie? Why yes, yes, it is.

Well I can't vouch for anything else he's done but giving us scantily clad peak Nicole Kidman is all right by me.

Love is Like Oxygen.

Interesting - I would rank those 3: Blitz > Fox >>> Oxygen

I like all the songs listed. Here are a few favorites:

Love Reign O'er Me - This is my favorite song off of Quadrophenia. 🫶 to Wikkid who loved this tune.
One of the Boys - Good Rock n Roll, and one of my favorites by them. I also like All The Way From Memphis that was taken earlier.
Blue Highway - Love that intro. I have fun vivid memories of this song playing in the background. I also like White Wedding that was taken.
Fox On the Run - I had this 45 when the song came out. I still love the tune. I like the other two Sweet songs taken as well.
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - Top 5 favorite Smiths song.
Pink Moon - I love mellow yellow songs.
Animal - I like the groove of this song, and I like Def Leppard in general.
Alone Again - I love mellow yellow songs.
There She Goes - Nice toe tapping tune. I missed it when it was posted earlier.
Valerie - Both versions of this song listed today are good.
Fairytale of New York - Fun Christmas song. I missed the recent posting.
Time Passages - I've always had a soft spot for this song. Al Stewart sounds so English to me.
This Year's Love - I love mellow yellow songs.
I've always liked the beginning of Girls on Film.

Favorite new to me songs:

Connected
Breakthrough
Daybreak
You Don't Know Jesus - cool instrumental
Take Me Out

Hmm songs:
Crass - This is definitely a song I'd have to be in the mood to hear, but it made me smile. I think I'd like it a lot if I was very high on cocaine.

Just finished with my 1 point favorites

New Binky the Doormat:

Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode

Yankee23Fan:

Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve

DrIanMalcolm:

Magic - Olivia Newton-John

higgins:

Only Time Will Tell – Asia

landrys hat:

All Day And All Of The Night - The Kinks

Won't say much for now but The Kinks are just outstanding - I doubt I hear anything new from them but I think we will see them a lot.

Doug B:
Young Turks - Rod Stewar

Today I learned:

[Stewarts's "Young Turks"] was the first video played on MTV that contained breakdancing. It was released a few months after MTV went on the air, and benefited from lots of play on the channel.

If someone had asked me that as a bar bet, I'd have guessed thousands of other songs before "Young Turks". I guess they're talking about this part ... though I was expecting to at least see some windmilling or something.

Also -- is it me or does this look like A LOT of soft-drink commercials over the years?

Hawks64:

Daybreak - The Stone Roses
(new song)
maybe the best "new to me" song so far. I never really checked these guys out.

It's nice to see a Stone Roses song picked off of Second Coming. It has the reputation as one of the prototypical "difficult second albums" but there's a lot of good stuff there, just not as much as their classic debut.

@Uruk-Hai My seminar tomorrow is at the Grandover.

I met Uruk at the Grandover several years ago for a beer(s) when he and his friends were in town for the ACC tournament. I ate a 🍔 too. I hope they serve some good food tomorrow, and I hope this seminar isn't a super spreader. 😷
That was - what? - 2009 or so? Simey and I had a little problem finding each other because neither of us looked like what the other thought  That was a fun time, though. The folks I was with wanted to go right after Maryland lost. Simey was mad at me because we had tickets for the entire tourney and they went unused for the last couple of sessions. I wasn't in control of transportation, though, and didn't have time to get them to her.

The Grandover a really nice place. The ACCT wasn't as much fun as Atlanta for the non-game stuff, because every team's fans were so spread out (Grandover is waay out from downtown). In Atlanta, everyone except I think BC & Duke (lol) were downtown right next to each other and it was fun hanging with fans of other teams. But the atmosphere for the games was awful in Atlanta, as they were played in the Georgia Dome with a huge damned curtain hanging across half of the place (on the pro side: they stuck the Duke fans in the farthest corner). The Greensboro Coliseum was a much better venue to watch the games.

Your damned avatar is freaking me out, man. Some of the other new ones just confuse me, but yours is giving me nightmares - I'm imagining it breeding with Binky's.

Neat Neat Neat- The Damned

Round 2

I guess it was around that time. It was a long time ago. I wasn't mad about the tickets. I didn't even know y'all had burnt rubber after Maryland's loss until you told me later, and then you mentioned having left with tickets that could have been used. I was like dude I only live about 3 miles away from the Grandover. I could have gotten them. It didn't matter to me, though. I had no expectations of getting free tickets. That was an unfortunate loss for Maryland. Weren't they really good that year?

A lot of fans tailgate in the Coliseum parking lot, and some bring their RVs. I was so excited in 2020 when KC and The Sunshine Band were going to play a free concert outside of the Coliseum at the White Oak Ampitheatre to kickoff the Men's tournament, and it got cancelled the day before due to Covid. I still have those tickets.

I did a zoom meeting the last two years for this seminar, but the last year I was there in person I was playing with my phone, and I had the volume turned off. I can't remember why I brought up youtube, but I brought it up and all of a sudden music started playing and my volume was so loud, and I couldn't get the ****ing thing to turn off. Everyone turned to look at me, and the speaker stopped talking, and I finally got it off. I was so embarrassed. I will not be bringing up youtube this time, but I will surf on my phone if I get reception in the room.

Had to look it up because my memory sucks and those two tournaments run together for me. It was 2010 in Greensboro. Maryland had tied Duke for 1st during the regular season. They had Vasquez, Hayes, and Milburn. Freaking Ga Tech beat them in the quarterfinals. Got one game out of the trip, but it was fun. I wanted to stay and watch the rest of the games, but the others didn't.

2009 was the Atlanta tournament I went to. The Terps lost a close one to Duke in the semis.

Funny story about Atlanta ACCT that year. One of our group found out that they wouldn't serve beer in the GA Dome, so he got one of those false-belly reservoirs and filled it up

Well, now I'm thinking it won't be until Friday that I put up a song that you lot will appreciate. Oi!

I just got to yours now. Never heard it before but I like it a lot. Kind of a different sound from what I know of them (iirc they had a more twangy sound, and I really haven't followed them much). This one sounds very Foo-Fighter-ish which isn't a bad thing.

Well that makes me feel better.

FWIW - I don't think I can name another Mumford & Sons song. I really like how this one drives forward and strips down then amps up the sounds.
