Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Lest anyone be upset with scorchy for messing up their Bitter Sweet Symphony pick  , I'll mention that The Verve actually has four different songs selected. Same with Dusty Springfield who was our other most popular choice for the Ace Award - she gets four songs as well.
I will be honest, I don't think I have heard another Verve song. I am shocked there are 4. Something interesting. There are a few song guesses there that I've literally never heard of.

We love The Verve in this house. My daughter warned me there would be other picks, but I just thought Bitter stood out so much that... well, I was wrong. The kid thinks Ashcroft is pure musical genius and loves his solo stuff too. I still wish she made a list.

Pip’s Invitation:

Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe
(new artist)
As I told Krista when I submitted my list, this is a perfect power pop song that sounds like what Alex Chilton could have done in the late '70s if he had wanted to continue making power pop, which he did not.

I remember it fondly from the car radio and the early days of MTV. It is perfectly constructed in every way -- it sounds like Paul could have written this at the height of his power in the Beatles.

I agree with all of this! Nick Lowe in general is underrated, for his own work and the work he wrote and/or produced for others. I'm sure many people know of his work with Elvis Costello (especially people who are trying to be cool), but I didn't realize until this exercise that he'd produced acts as varied as The Damned, Johnny Cash, Wreckless Eric, John Hiatt, and Mavericks.
Johnny Cash was also Nick's father in law. Imagine being a musician and having that guy as your wife's step dad.

They had a couple other popular songs in the 90s - The Freshmen and Reverend Girl

Up The Junction – Squeeze
(new song)
These are my favorites from the songs I know well. Six of them were in my top 90.

Yesterday was really an amazing bunch of songs. I always knew I was an Anglophile, but the immense chasm between this list and the American one so far (IMO, obvs) totally cements it. I was forced into the difficult decision to be way more discriminating in my round-by-round favorites post lest I end up with 2/3 of the songs from the round getting repeated on it. Also came to the realization that the wording of my categories keep me from listing songs that will be coming up among by own Top 31 (without spotlighting, of course). Oh well.

I'm with you. I'm loving these selections more, and even more so I find almost all of them listenable even if they aren't my favorites, which wasn't the case in the US countdown.
It's pretty much the opposite for me.

There are songs that have been chosen here that I love, and I suspect many more are to come. But the depth & variety isn't anywhere close - in my opinion - to the US version of this countdown. There are a couple hundred artists I regret leaving out of the other, but I'd have strained to make 31 here and most of those wouldn't have even been in consideration for a combined list (maybe 3 or 4).

That's what keeps this rock spinning, though. I'm enjoying following along and reading everyone's stories about why they love these records - which is much more interesting to me than the records themselves.

My Chvrches pick was my major miss of the 31. This was the pick that caused the PM to krista after I submitted. This was the band that was brought up when my wife and I were talking about the UK artists, and she just asked "oh, what Chvrches song did you pick?" - rightly assuming that it should have been a no-brainer it was on my list. If I would have thought of them, it would have been in my top 10. In hindsight, it should be around my #8 pick instead of that one. Love them, and have seen them a few times now. Clearest Blue is the KP family's favorite by them, so that's why it made the list. The song that was the farthest up my list I felt OK with leaving off was No You Girls, so that's what got the axe to fit this one in.

There's No Way Out Of Here - David Gilmour
(new artist)

I love Gilmour's self titled first solo album and anyone who likes the Gilmour-led post-Waters version of Floyd should check it out. The production gives off a great vibe and of course there is great guitar work throughout.

simey:

Time Of The Season - The Zombies
(new song)

This was in my last 5 out.

Yankee23Fan:

Starman – David Bowie
(new artist)

Gonna take this opportunity to post another hilarious scene from Walk Hard.
shuke:

I first got hooked on this song when I heard a live version on Traffic's Welcome to the Canteen. Soon thereafter I bought the Alone Together album and wore it out for the rest of high school and all of college.

scorchy:

The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve
(new song)

I didn't take Bitter Sweet Symphony for the tiebreaker contest because I figured Scorchy would pull out this or one of their other songs. Of course my plan of Son of a Preacher Man didn't work either.

Zegras11:

Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
(new song)

In my top 5 of Beatles songs. My son loves it also.:heart::heart::heart:

Oliver Humanzee:

Suspect Device - Stiff Little Fingers
(duplicate – third vote in three days)

I figured that if I shared any picks with OH, this song was the most likely one.

Johnny Cash was also Nick's father in law. Imagine being a musician and having that guy as your wife's step dad.
On a related note, this ties into my comment about Paul Carrack's all-to-brief tenure in Squeeze. He left after a year to join a backing band for Carlene Carter -- and from there he went to Nick Lowe's Noise to Go. (And after that to Mike and the Mechanics, but you all probably knew that.)

There's No Way Out Of Here - David Gilmour
(new artist)

This was the biggest surprise on the list for me. Nice! Since I went down the Floyd hole last night and this was discussed, here's some background. It's usually attributed to David, but it's a cover. He discovered a folk rock band in 77-78 and a brilliant teenage singer and decided to produce records for both. Unicorn was the band's name and Gilmour liked this one so much he told them he was gonna take a swing at it. His vocals, his guitar, soaring Floyd-like female back up singers. He killed it. Despite the success of Animals, Wish, and Dark the guys were financially desperate having been duped by their financial management. They weren't getting along much or working together. Unicorn flopped. David's solo album flopped. The teenager's debut was a big hit helping David out financially. The rise of punk and the teenager's debut, according to Gilmour, both contributed to the flop of his first solo effort.

Around this time Roger got the guys together and explained what he'd been working on. His little dream of an autobiographical concept album, a film, and a tour where they would play behind a wall. The others had nothing better going so they went to work. And whew, did Roger and David go the extra mile to make it all happen. Anyway the teenager Gilmour discovered was Kathy Bush, but they decided to call her Kate.

Up until 4-5 years ago I thought this was a Monster Magnet song and 1 of my favs by them. They also do a decent cover of Venus In Furs on the same album(Monolithic Baby!)

Known-to-me favorites from the six-pointers, AKA a touchdown when Brett Maher attempts the extra point, excluding my own pick and Suspect Device which is known to be on my list:

Rolling in the Deep -- Adele (Don Quixote)
Valerie -- Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse (Hov34)
Time of the Season -- The Zombies (Simey)
Here Comes the Sun -- The Beatles (Zegras11)
Take Me Out -- Franz Ferdinand (Titusbramble)

Stay With Me -- Faces (Eephus)

Good Fortune -- PJ Harvey (Westerberg)

Conquistador -- Procol Harum (Binky)

It kind of sucks seeing a failure of reactions to your pick when it's been chosen twice already, but at the same time Take Me Out is a banger

Yeah, a lot of people are going to face this. A large number of songs got 5+ votes, so by the time the people who really loved the song come up, they could be played out, so to speak.

I do love "Take Me Out"!

Also, I saw Franz Ferdinand in Chicago when they were on the tour supporting this album, and they were a fantastic live show. One of the best I saw during that time period, and I saw a squillion shows a year back then.

I marked your pick wrong on my master list -- my post is edited now.

The first FF album and Take Me Out in particular was a huge deal among my friends during my Lost Years. It's one of the best examples of danceable rock we've ever seen.

I would agree with this, and it's obvious over the first few rounds and was solidified when Krista confirmed how many fewer artists there were drafted here vs. the US lists despite having several more participants. Both countdowns are great, but my lean with these is more wanting to be introduced to a lot of new artists vs. a lot of songs from fewer newer artists.

Maybe I'm misremembering the first few rounds, but did we have an equivalent of something like the same George Michael song being taken 3 times or the same Stiff Little Fingers songs 3 times?

Sleaford Mods

Last night, while trying to sleep, I was playing a semi-conscious game with El Floppo about homeless guys yelling at me and how that related to this thread's point total. It went over and over in my head. Fizzy!

Honestly don't know why that happened. Yes, Flop loves Sleaford Mods.

Other things:

"Take Me Out" is an awesome track that deserves a meritorious affirmative nod every time it's been posted.

"Outdoor Miner" is a fantastic track, and one I considered.

There's another one there I'm forgetting that I saw and loved. TK.

I opined about "Complete Control" the other day. Suffice it to say that it's the Clash's declaration of independence from every pressure but their own to be the best rock and roll band in the world. That's how they (naively) saw it, anyway.

The time I saw them live was first on during one of the NME tours in 2004 behind the Von Bondies, the Rapture (both ineligible hence naming, House of Jealous Lovers by the latter is incredible) and eligible Welsh band who were headlining but who were terrible, literally half the crowd had left within three songs of their set, myself included

A bit more balanced today on whether I knew the songs or not today. As all things should be? Regardless, always some tough choices to prevent me from talking about half the list!

There's been some, like a couple Deep Purple tracks. That's cool too, but like I said, my slight preference is new artists that I get introduced to.
