Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

New-to-me favorites from #27:

Sails -- Elephant Tree (Manster). Heavy and mesmerizing, like the best Shoegaze.
Leather Jacket -- Mick Taylor (Tim). I had no idea he had a solo career. I would have expected blooze-rock but this was incredibly melodic and almost folk-rock-ish in spots. The instrumental breaks let us know it's really him, though.
Dirty Harry -- Gorillaz (Ditkaburgers). I loved all the stuff going on in this -- incredibly funky and danceable.
Outdoor Miner -- Wire (Krista4). I've heard of Wire but I don't know if I'd ever heard them before. This was more straightforward rock, almost power pop, than I was expecting, and it was glorious.

For me, the British Isles win the head-to-head against the US in most of my favorite genres (goth, post-punk, synth-pop, shoegaze, trip-hop). No contest when it comes to Britpop, obviously. I think the US only has the advantage in 90s alternative and hip-hop.

R&B and Country.
And jazz and blues and showtunes and folk and MOR pop and Grand Funk and.... But I don't think any of those are genres scorchy's into.

Eephus: Stay With Me – Faces
It's hard to get more rock 'n roll than a one night stand and this song is pure excitement. Everything works together well, the driving bassline, the crazed Wurlitzer piano and the two guitars ripping in either ear. Rod's hoots and hollers are the icing on the cake. I love how the song just keeps getting wilder and wilder at the end.
It's bar band music taken to its logical extreme. The whole thing sounds like it's getting ready to fall apart at any moment, but somehow they hold it together. Along with the Beatles' "I'm Down", it's the best non-Penniman Little Richard ever.

- In the "think of them as part of bands not as solo artists" division, I enjoyed the Mick Taylor the most.
This was another song I discovered by making an iTunes Radio channel from a song from Exile On Main Street.

I do have say that, like many others, I regard Mick Taylor’s time as a Rolling Stone as their very best era of music.

I believe this song was part of the rift that developed between Taylor and Keef. Taylor wanted the Stones to record it and Keith was opposed. Mick T was right. It's an excellent tune and one of my faves from yesterday.

He also wanted song writing credits for his guitar solo contributions on songs like “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” and “Time Waits for No One”.

Leather Jacket is a very cool song. The rest of the album is average at best. Time showed Taylor needed the Stones more than the Stones needed him (although he was their best guitarist imo).

Yeah, I was just speaking about my favorite genres. Given my history with classic country, I should have included that. And Latin freestyle too. The UK's got nothing that compares to Shannon, Lisa Lisa, or Lil' Suzy. Don't even come at me with any Samantha Fox.

Let the music play

We keep laughing. Saying things like “no way Joe Jackson can hold off the Mighty Led Zeppelin”….yet here he is stepping out with a lead that grows bigger and bigger.
Come on, little engine that could - Joe Joe Joe.

Yesterday's takes:

Songs On My Original List of 75 that Missed the Cut

Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O’Connor (Just Win Baby)
Dark Entries – Bauhaus (The Dreaded Marco)
Cities In Dust - Siouxsie and the Banshees (Doug B) - if Sinead's had been Mandinka instead, this would have been a strong set at the alt/goth club in 1989.

Songs Not On That List But I Still Love Them

Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe (Pip’s Invitation)
Time of the Season - The Zombies (simey) - my ignorant ### always mixes up The Zombies, The Hollies, and The Animals. This thread has been educational.
Atmosphere - Joy Division (Andy Dufresne)
(Forever) Live And Die - Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark (Mt Man)
Good Fortune - PJ Harvey (Westerberg)
Stay With Me – Faces (Eephus) -
Always On My Mind – Pet Shop Boys (Chaz McNulty)
Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles (Zegras 11)
Outdoor Miner – Wire (krista4) - This is like a different band than my favored first album, but still resoundingly great.

New to Me Songs That I Liked A Bunch

Sails - Elephant Tree (Manster)
Let Me Be There - Olivia Newton-John (simsarge)

Previously Lauded

Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand (titusbramble) - my two-pointer
Suspect Device - Stiff Little Fingers (Oliver Humanzee) - my five-pointer
Complete Control – The Clash (rockaction)
Valerie – Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse (Hov34) - my three-pointer

Lisa Lisa,
Most unlikely band I’ve seen live - with the full force of the Cult Jam.
They opened for David Bowie at Giants Stadium with Squeeze in between and were in early enough for her set for some reason.
That's quite the odd billing. My favorite member of Full Force was always Bow-legged Lou.

ETA: Full Force also produced what's easily the best Samantha Fox song (which I won't name so as not to spotlight any big fans of the naughty girl).

I don't know their whole catalog unless their radio hits were the entire thing, but they were fun.

Lisa was a rather attractive lass.

Round 6 Shout Outs

@New Binky the Doormat Conquistador by Procol Harum: not new to me but I have not heard this in a long, long time. I forgot how catchy it is.
@KarmaPolice Clearest Blue by CHVRCHES: had no idea they were British
@shuke Shouldn't Have Took More than You Gave by Dave Gilmour: a late minute scratch from my list
@Manster Sails by Elephant: never heard of this song or band, it rocked
@Westerberg Good Fortune by PJ Harvey: an artist I have really overlooked for totally unknown reasons, sounds like Patti Smith who I really dig
@Dr. Octopus 's friend Another Nail in my Heart by Squeeze: another song I haven't heard in ages

Will Led Zeppelin continue to be shut out through the seven-pointers tomorrow?

Tomorrow we have, among other things, song vs. song battles in the following categories:
- Shrubbery
- Religion (three-way battle)
- Kathies gaining elevation
- Dumped kitten colors
- Calendar entries (five-way battle, including one battle of the same band's songs)
- Materials for stretchy pants
- Booze (four-way battle)
- Celestial matters (eight-way battle!)

And naturally, we will have Leo Sayer.
Do some songs fall into two of these categories? I know what category my pick falls into (trying to figure out the 2nd song), but I also think it could fall into the Religion 3-way battle.

Yes, some songs fall into more than one category! Song post coming next.

I’m admittedly a sucker for All Cried Out
I love All Cried Out but it still triggers me. October 1986, freshman year of HS. I am all set to go to homecoming with a super-cute girl named Anne-Marie. A week before the dance, she decides she's gonna go with my neighbor/arch-nemesis Trevor instead. I think I hid in my room every night after dinner and listened to All Cried Out on repeat (probably mis-remembering, since it would have been on a cassette dubbed from the radio). Ended up going instead with this metal chick named Dana and it was all cool, until the DJ played Lisa Lisa and I looked over and saw Trevor and Anne-Marie slow dancing/locking lips. So crushing.

Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol
(new artist)

My special shout-outs today go to two songs that were on my short-short list but were just edged out: "Don't Look Back in Anger" and "How Soon Is Now?" Also want to call out "Back in the High Life" and "A New England" for being generally awesome, "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth" for being one of my top five post-Beatles Beatles songs, and "Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman" for being today's best title.

My choice today is from one of my many Scottish artists. It's just a big beautiful pop anthem of the type that sucks me in. I dare you to try to get that chorus out of your brain.

oh man, Pip's "Every Picture Tells A Story" makes me sad that I chose not include Rod Stewart. That album was one of the first handful of albums I ever owned - and I played the living **** out of it.

every song is awesome ...boy this is the 3rd artist I didn't include that I should have

I'm too distracted. Some horrible person dumped a black kitten at the colony a few months ago. I got her spayed and vaccinated back in November. She disappeared yesterday, and I looked around periodically today for her, including tonight until it turned dark on me. It is going to rain tomorrow. I don't have a good feeling about it.
*Update I went out in the rain today to look for her again. I found her closed up in a metal shed that usually has a boat in it. She shot out of there like a bullet. I don't think she learned her lesson.

Tied with London Calling as my favorite rock albums of all time.

Outdoor Miner -- Wire (Krista4). I've heard of Wire but I don't know if I'd ever heard them before. This was more straightforward rock, almost power pop, than I was expecting, and it was glorious.

Meant to reply to this earlier. This is not necessarily typical Wire, and a lot of it is more rocking than this song. We'll have other picks from them that will show the variety.

I really like this song too. I have a couple of Wire albums but not this one. Very different sound.

Yankee23Fan:

Brain Damage/Eclipse – Pink Floyd
I was hoping this would make someone's list. Dark side is a cover-to-cover thing for me, but if there is 'one' song I would pluck out it's this one.

Full transparency - I should have ranked this higher, but I wanted to be the first to unveil. This is where Krista puts my head on a pike.

The Dreaded Marco:

Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones
My Stones contribution was always one of two options. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other which. In search of a tiebreaker I chose Paint It Black because it makes me think of Full Metal Jacket. That's it. I am quite pleased to see the day I put up Paint It Black I also get Gimme Shelter. Because ultimately my pick is half one, half the other in my mind.

Hov34:

Ooh La La – Faces
Thrilled to see this. I'm partial to The Young Dubliners rendition, but as it turns out they're one of many irish-american acts that I thought were just irish before going through this exercise.

krista4:

Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol
 Snow Patrol

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me...
...and just forget the world.

My Stones pick also came down to these 2 songs----the exact same sentiment as you.

Way too many favorites on this list of known songs to highlight all of them but I'll narrow it to these. A few others on the list that I've already liked.
