It's amazing how much we disagree on everything fun in life but seem to agree on everything stressful and unfun.

This is a strange link. Better one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb4kfolKwGA

People who don't send links get whatever comes up first when I google. No time will be spent looking for the "best one" when the drafter of the song couldn't be bothered to. :)
I sent links in my message
I will next time, now that I know. Scout's honor thought you were more or less happy to find links.

Another Double Door fun fact: it's where I met the first Mr. krista, in 1998. My friend Shannon was telling me that the drummer in her boyfriend's band was interested in me.* I'd been doing a lot of power-dating and was tired of it, so I was in the midst of telling her that I was going to take a break from dating, and literally in the middle of my sentence I looked up and saw a guy doing soundcheck for his performance and I said, "...so I'm not going to date anyone for a while...[looks at the stage] except for him." Our mutual friend and former boyfriend of mine, five-time Grammy nominee Justin Roberts**, was also in the conversation and said, "That guy? I could get you a date with him in 30 seconds." And he did.

*Never ever date the drummer. They're all insane. Except Ringo, of course.
**I point this out only because the Grammys are coming up, and he's never won and I really hope he'll win this year!

Prince eventually relented to releasing songs on YouTube and I'm sure Budgie will as well. One can easily see the resemblance of those two artists.

Cigarettes & Alcohol - Oasis
(new song)
In 1999 I went to a New Year’s Eve party at Chap’s shore house in Lavallette. One of our buddies Mark (Derby) was originally from England and had brought a few other Englishmen and women to the party. At one point I went upstairs and all the English men and women we standing up on the coffee table singing this song at the top of their lungs. It’s always been a favorite since.

I was trying to find photos of some of the New Orleans' record stores of my youth
Here is mine from Long Island: Record Stop

I still have fond memories of the store and seeing the picture of the owner Bruce Berg was a bit surreal - he was a huge part of my childhood/teen years, and I hadn't thought of him in many many years.
Mine was Rainy Day Records in Olympia, WA. I spent dozens of hours browsing in this shop.
Princeton Record Exchange for me. Still there, hasn't changed much.

You've done the lord's work here - don't bother having to recheck.

No, I appreciate it but want people to have the links they sent if they took the time to do it. I'll copy yours into the master document now. I suspect they might have been Youtube links that came up as attachments/icons in the message? In those instances, I have to go to the individual links and then copy them into the document. For those that came in like that (rather than a hyperlink or a paste of the URL), then I generally noted at the top of the drafter's list that I needed to go back into their message each time. But I missed putting that notation for you. Apologies again!

It's cool - I embedded the links in the song titles, but should have posted them separately. All good.

I see what happened now. Your original list didn't have links. Then a while later you made a change and sent me a fully new list that had hyperlinks, but at that point I had already completely collated the data from your list, so I simply made your changes on my existing list rather than copying the new one you'd sent. So I wasn't using the one with the hyperlinks. I have it now! Actually the way you did it was perfect and very much the easiest way for me to work with the data.

Don't Ask Me Questions - Graham Parker
(new artist)
Graham Parker is a notable whiff by me.
Like Joe Jackson, I just couldn't decide on a song for him. And if you couldn't pin me down on a song, you weren't making the list.
I had that problem with another band. They created a top-10 all-time favorite album of mine, but I could not separate one song out from the pack, even though one is super well-known. The band has not been selected yet, so I won't spotlight (though they've been mentioned in this thread), but it's a big hint that the guitar player overdosed and died at the age of 26, and he will be featured in a few songs not yet selected with another VERY prominent artist. He could have been everything Jeff Beck was, and more.

The Yardbirds - there it is! With that selection and Van Morrison now every artist on my list save one has been picked. I do still have 15 of my 22 songs still to be revealed however.
The artist in my top 15 that I mentioned yesterday still has not been picked (though they do appear in Last 5 Out).
I only have one artist left that hasn't been taken yet - but he's also part of a band that has been taken.

Mine was Rainy Day Records in Olympia, WA. I spent dozens of hours browsing in this shop.
Princeton Record Exchange for me. Still there, hasn't changed much.

Yep. Same here. Went to Rutgers, so we'd make special trips down Rte 27 just to go there.
Hey look at that, more than 1 Rutgers alum.
I did not go to Rutgers, but most of my family did and I grew up in Piscataway.

I'm trying to remember what movie I associate with Spandau Ballet's True - Wedding Singer?
Sixteen Candles?

ETA: Wikipedia says it was in 50 First Dates (but I haven’t seen it). If thinking Adam Sandler, probably that one.

ETA2: Or I guess right on Wedding Singer with zamboni’s link below — maybe it is easier to list movies it has not been in.

Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
(duplicate – second vote)

This is probably the most American-sounding song I have on my Brit list. It's every bit as good as the best soul songs from our side of the pond -- which is logical since it was "in Memphis." Dusty's vocal is so compelling.
I think the closest American equivalent for Dusty Springfield might be Barbara Mason (who should have been a bigger star than she was) crossed with Patsy Cline, which ain't a bad thing. Dusty certainly wasn't Aretha (no one else was, either).

Where Do The Children Play? - Cat Stevens
(new song)
This is a strange link. Better one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb4kfolKwGA

People who don't send links get whatever comes up first when I google. No time will be spent looking for the "best one" when the drafter of the song couldn't be bothered to. :)
I sent links in my message
I will next time, now that I know. Scout's honor thought you were more or less happy to find links.

In early 2000, a bunch of us (locals musicians and one lawyer!) agreed to go see a band at the Double Door due solely to our friend Thomas being so excited about them. Granted, Thomas got excited about every band (he was a sometimes band manager, sometimes record producer, and all times bon vivant), and there was also a better-than-average chance he was most excited about them because he found one or more of the members cute (which turned out to be the case), but Thomas’s pure joy in music was always contagious, and we followed where he led us and never regretted it. The band, Travis, was just starting to get a little buzz about their second album, but frankly I knew nothing about them yet. WHAT A ****ING SHOW. This wasn’t a big loud rock show where you come out saying they shredded it. But their talent was incredible and somehow they oozed so much charm and evidenced intelligence and showmanship that you just knew that this was a band on a precipice of being huge.

They did start to get buzz from this album (fronted for Oasis on their national tour) and murmurs that they’d be the Next Big Thing, but somehow it never happened for them. It should have. They had superhuman talent and, when you talked to them, seemed like capital R “Rock Stars” in the best of ways. Anyway, this is the song I remember most from that show, and it brought the whole ****ing house down.

I’m happy to see that @scorchy selected them today, too! Both OH and I got doubled-up today (sexy!) on new artists to the countdown.
I gotta run to my next performance review but didn't want to miss Travis talk. So happy to see someone else is a fan.

I first heard the main single from their first album on a Q magazine sampler CD in early 1998. Liked it enough that I was at the record store on the day The Man Who was released in spring 1999. By the end of the year, Travis was one of the biggest selling bands in the UK, with 4 top 15 singles and the album itself finishing third in total sales among 1999 releases. They won best band and best album at the 2000 Brit Awards and headlined that year's Glastonbury. All with barely a peep over on this side of the Atlantic. I was fortunate to see them at one of those Oasis shows as well as a headliner later that year. Start to finish, The Man Who is still one of my most treasured records.

ETA: Turn was my pick and my personal favorite from the album. The CD-single has a great cover of Baby One More Time.

Blew my mind however many years go it was that I found out Dusty was British. The song sounds so American and even the name Dusty Springfield. I would have bet my life that she was a Black woman from Atlanta or Louisville or Little Rock.
