Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

I saw the other post about his comment. My thought was on the lines of me probably liking the pick because finding it desturbing would require attention to lyrics.

I'm not sure why he called it that, but I had kinda tuned out. It's not a lyrics issue, though!

ETA: (Because it's an instrumental.)

Well, ironically I am prone to now not like it because I don't like instrumentals generally.

Evidently I need lyrics, I just often can't be bothered to actually listen to them. :loco:

Want to add that these drafts have been wonderful, and @krista4 has been amazingly generous with her time. And I'll add a thanks to Spotifyguy @Hawks64 and the backups and the Rannouses for the second contest and everyone who is posting and sharing. I know listening and posting daily can be challenging (which I fail sometimes) but the level of participation, even if people only drop in every third day or so, has been great. Special shoutout to @Eephus for his posts on his family's picks.

These drafts have also been very fruitful for me - if I can get just one "new to me" band that I can really sink my teeth into, that's priceless. And "new" is so subjective too - we had a guy in this draft who never heard My Sweet Lord before. Last draft it was me and Seven Nation Army, which was probably even a bigger "huh?" due to the billion-plus spotify plays (although now I do know I've heard it hundreds of times on TV for sporting events, but I never really pay attention to that.)

Expanding on that, I had ignored the White Stripes just because when they were big, other stuff took precedent in my life. But since that last draft, man, I really like them and have gone in pretty deep. I feel like a kid with a new toy, so thanks for that. For this draft, right now The Psychedelic Furs are definitely one I should have paid more attention to. I mean, I knew they existed and recognize the hit or two (how could I not being an 80's teen / 20-something), but I was more into metal then. I really like what I've heard from them and am digging in a little more.

I'm the opposite in many cases. Especially some metal - if you're not Bruce or some other fantastic singer, I'd almost rather just the music. I like Metallica, but some songs of theirs would be better if James just played and didn't sing. And don't get me started on the Cookie Monster growling that ruins a ton of otherwise good metal for me.

Awesome way to look at these projects. I feel the same way - if I can introduce "that" song to someone, it's worth all the obsessing and research. Even moreso the other. If I can get introduced to a new artist or song, or even rekindle a love for a band.....

I don't even know what to say about metal. It's what I grew up on, but I listen to less and less. What I do love I REALLY love - e.g. Opeth as one of my current 5 favorite bands. I also can't tell you what I do and don't like in the vocals with much clarity. I am with you on the growling for the most part, but if a band has enough talent, I can sometimes get over it - again with Opeth and even bands like Death and others. Something on the lines of Cannibal Corpse is a no-go, as is usually anything more screamo. Hell, I even listen to a bit of King Diamond because I love the solo and storytelling. But bands like Dream Theater I can't get over the vocals despite being amazing musicians.

Doug B:

One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head
(new artist)

Favorites from today that I haven't already given a shout out to.
I wonder if this is the only show tune in this exercise? Probably not, though if there's been another one, it's escaped my notice.
I Dreamed a Dream showed up earlier.
Also a song from Mary Poppins.

That’s why I put it at 31 - ain’t nobody stealing that one, bitches!

I was so mad/excited when I saw someone take I Can See For Miles a couple days ago. I thought maybe it was going to somehow not get disused until my selection. It’s always fun to be first on a song even if being later actually means you ranked it better.
Yeah, in retrospect shouldn't the countdown be a count up? Then the person who had the song ranked highest could be first to discuss it?

Yep, not a fan of this concept with this many songs. For one, it's just too many songs to get through in a 24 hour period. I've sort of given up trying. And then if someone lists one of your songs a pick or two above yours it's lost. (Until the top 5 or so). I understand the drawback of a draft, but I also miss talking about a song that has the spotlight and doesn't have to share it with 40 other songs. And I sort of miss sniping.

Oh, and I want my Avatar back...

Settle down - I'll get off your lawn in a minute.

Let me try to clear up my poorly worded diatribe. I am in no way trying to poop on this exercise or take away from any of the unbelievable amount of work that @krista4 has done (she is a saint, and has a permanent place in the FBG Hall of Fame.

I just don't feel like I'm giving anyone's choices the recognition they deserve, because one, there are just too many songs to get through in a 24 hour period. And two, I can't access FBG at work anymore - and while I do get to listen to the mixes (thanks @Hawks64 ) by the time I get home I'm too lazy to go back through the mix and hate to just shout out 1 or 2 songs that stuck out.

And I do prefer a draft and sniping, because it forces me to explore my 2nd, 3rd and probable 4th-10th picks for that artist which sort of get lost. And I know this is "favorite" so it shouldn't matter, but with some artists I could have put 8 songs in a hat and drew one. But if I pick that song as my 15th fav of all time and someone else picks it 17th I feel bad for the other songs I could have picked for that artist to get some recognition.

BTW, the only reason I'm in here now is because we have a Snow (Ice) day... I'll head back to lurking and enjoying the music. Sorry. :kicksrock:

Won't Get Fooled Again - My favorite part is the ending starting with the drums that lead up to the final scream of YEAH.

That old roommate I mentioned a few days ago - the one whose shtick was to start any bong riff session with ELO's Showdown. Well, he also developed a shtick for this one. We had a 3 story townhouse with a loft. His space was the lone room on the ground floor with the over sized garage, which is where we congregated around the bong. But we spent most of our time in the living area on the second floor. My 'bedroom' was the loft that overlooked this living area. We drank. A lot. We also had a tendency to play a lot of the same music during this time period (see, Showdown) and Won't Get Fooled Again got played. A lot. Whenever we got to the extended reset that led to the this climax he'd quietly get up from the table, signaling a break from whatever drinking game we were playing that day, walk up to the loft, and position himself on the ledge. This guy, a drummer since before starting grade school, would then bang out the drum part with his hands on the drywall in perfect unison and culminate with a cannonball onto the couch beside us screaming YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEAAAAHHH in flight.

How none of us died in that house I'll never know.

I think this anecdote surrounding Gimme Shelter interesting:

Jagger stated that the band thought, "it'd be great to have a woman come do the… chorus." They called Clayton "randomly" in the middle of the night in Los Angeles, and she showed up to the studio "in curlers" and contributed her parts in a few takes, which Jagger remarked was "pretty amazing." Clayton performed her parts while pregnant.

I can't imagine what a young KP thought of Them the first time I listened to this. Because of my post above, I put on some King Diamond while cleaning. The story is creepy as hell, and the music+King's voice sounds like hell unleashed (of course in a great way!).

Val Rannous:

When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

I ranked this #5 in Anarchy's countdown. My friend ranked it #21. As you may remember, collectively we ranked it #1.

It is the most thrilling and innovative of Zep's blues reworkings, and got them to the point where there was no use going down that path anymore because they weren't going to rework the blues any better than they did here.

THAT is truly awesome.

I salute you and your drummer buddy.

this kind of nonsense is what I need back in my life.

Given our ages, I would suggest not cannonballing one story down to a couch.

wow ...great story, have never seen that

and love her dissing on the Stones :lmao:

(note: I like the Stones ...)

I have found it easier and easier to keep up, actually. I am not listening to all the playlists start to finish anymore. No need to listen to the repeats unless it's something I really love.

It's also why many of us are doing the after-listen posts, to highlight stuff we love or make posts about our picks. It's a different format for sure, but IMO there is a lot more actual listening to the music and playlists than there is in the typical drafts.
Yep, I love the songs but at some point I am just skipping past Bittersweet Symphony and Zombie. I have heard them a bunch of times the last 2 weeks and I love it. Nothing against those incredible songs but as the playlists go on, I am most interested in the new songs- whether they are classics like When the Levee Breaks or surprise picks like Both Ends Burning.

I wonder if this is the only show tune in this exercise? Probably not, though if there's been another one, it's escaped my notice.
Not sure if it was conscious or not but seems like everyone tried to stay within a pretty tight musical range. The 007 theme from @Eephus is the only song that I can remember that really stood out. There is a whole other world to be explored of British music.

20 feet from Stardom

Saw Clayton do an a capella rendition of the vocal part at a film festival screening of 20 Feet from Stardom. As you can tell from that Queen Latifah interview, she's still a pistol.

I'm back to shuffling since I rarely made it to the end of the playlist.

Nice to hear Idlewild. Note to @MAC_32 this is also a different singer than Frightened Rabbit

Don't think I've ever heard that heavier version of "Pink Flag" before.

Surprised to see Achtung Baby shut out of the U2 songs selected so far.

Love how "Maybe I'm Amazed" build and the organ comes in before the guitar solo. Paul's pretty good at this.

"Don't Bring Me Down" came out when I was in high school. I had a friend named Bruce Adrian (RIP) who we used to tease with don't bring me down Bruuuce when the chorus came up.

The guitar solo in the song by the firm was very Frippy

Side one of John Barleycorn is magnificent.

Didn't expect Sally Simpson to show up in the countdown. I haven't listened to Tommy in a long time.

Enjoyed the hushed and beautiful So deep cut for Gabriel.

@ditkaburgers' Ed Sheeran song got booted because of an ineligible collaborator but I'm glad the countdown has ginger representation.

I need to listen to more solo George Harrison. Of the little I have heard, he's by far my favorite for post-Beatles stuff. Maybe he was't as prolific as John and Paul, but I think he more my speed. He was always my favorite Beatle because he was my mom's favorite. However, she never got into or exposed me much to his solo career.

@Dr. Octopus

I was always most drawn to George written Beatles songs long before I knew or understood that there were clear differences (mostly) between the individually written Beatles. It was shocking to me when I discovered that - this is well after his solo career had started.

it would be good to go through the old Beatles songs that are written by George. He got a few even in the early days ..."Don't Bother Me" was a highlight for me - even as a youngster in '64

  • ‘Don’t Bother Me’ – With The Beatles
  • ‘I Need You’ – Help!
  • You Like Me Too Much’ – Help!
  • Think For Yourself’ – Rubber Soul
  • ‘If I needed Someone’ – Rubber Soul
  • ‘Taxman’ – Revolver
  • ‘Love You To’ – Revolver
  • ‘I Want To Tell You’ – Revolver
  • ‘Within You Without You’ – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club
  • ‘Blue Jay Way’ – The Magical Mystery Tour
  • While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ – The White Album
  • ‘Piggies’ – The White Album
  • ‘Long, Long, Long’ – The White Album
  • ‘Savoy Truffle’ – The White Album
  • ‘It’s All Too Much’ – The Yellow Submarine
  • ‘Only A Northern Song’ – The Yellow Submarine
  • ‘Something’ – Abbey Road
  • ‘Here Comes The Sun’ – Abbey Road
  • I, Me, Mine’ – Let it Be
  • ‘Dig It’ – Let it Be
  • ‘For You Blue’ – Let it Be

ETA: I have to believe that ALMOST everyone here has seen "A Hard Days Night", it on HBO right now, and even though those of you that are much younger cannot imagine the impact this had on American kids at that time ...compared to light comedy movies from that time ...this holds up so well - PLUS you get the music.

😮 That must have been one sturdy couch. My favorite part Live!

Mrs. Eephus: Both Ends Burning - Roxy Music
I played this last night to get her reaction and she just started dancing. All I could get from her was that she was disappointed it wasn't in their setlist when they came to town last year. And she kept on dancing.

@ditkaburgers: Gotta Tell You - Samantha Mumba
Mumba is an Irish-born one-hit wonder who was a contemporary of Britney, Christina and that era of teenpop superstars. ditkaburgers was 8 at the time and had just started listening to a lot of Radio Disney and Top 40 radio. "Gotta Tell You" was in heavy rotation for a while. Mumba has an African father and Irish mother so ditkaburgers could identify more with her than a bunch of blonde girls.

Eephus: Get Started, Start A Fire - Graham Parker
I love Parker's albums with The Rumour. They were a formidable live act in the late 70s. Their show in support of Squeezing Out Sparks is way up my list in concert experiences. But "Get Started, Start a Fire" is my favorite song of his, even though only 40% of the Rumour play on it. The song has a unique spacious sound with Andrew Bodnar's pulsing bassline and Parker singing at the top of his vocal range. The three verses featuring the Mona Lisa's sister, Marilyn Monroe and Joan of Arc all end in flames.

I'm disheartened and not super-into giving teasers today, but here's what I have for tomorrow:

1. Two Deja Votes: one intra-family Deja Vote of a song new to the countdown, and another Deja Vote from a non-Big 3 artist that will have a triple-up tomorrow.
2. A new version of a song that has already been selected by a different artist.
3. Another person loses their selection for the Ace Award due to another song from their artist being selected.
4. Speaking of the Ace Award, there's another double-up tomorrow that will involve another vote for the long-running song leader in the contest (which no one guessed), losing only when the penultimate list came in and included the second song that will be posted tomorrow from the same artist.
5. There's a song on tomorrow's list that's a cover by one of my least favorite artists of a song by one of my favorite artists. Since this was one of the lists that came in without links, I refuse to look it up or listen to it or link to it.

Only six songs from new artists tomorrow, but a ton of new songs from those we already know and love.

If I had to take a stab I’d guess Hallelujah as the song because it’s been covered so many times and I know you’re a big fan of Cohen. I can’t necessarily think of a version that would qualify though.

Oh, that thing caved in on itself. I forget how many times he did it as well as the other copycats that flowed through the house, but its shelf life was...not long. That crazy mother ****er though? He kept cannonballing anyway.

OH's pick finally came up on shuffle. It must have been something for the few people who heard to it in 1977. I kept waiting for someone to step to the mic and begin shouting but it never happened.

I dug the skronky guitar solo that began after the three minute mark but could have done without a couple of minutes of the sustained keyboard chords towards the end.

Known-to-me favorites from #15, not including my own pick. And Valerie. Wait, that didn't actually appear today? What?

I knew almost everything today. Of course OH was one of the holdouts. As was Iron Maiden.

@Zegras11 Killer choice today, this live Detroit version of Pictures of You is striking. Consider me moved.
gotta give @Hawks64 credit for that Live Detroit Spotify post. That is a killer version as are many from that Detroit live.

I had given K4 this link from when I saw them in Boise. Also a great listen.(but not on Spotify)

There are 27 cases of songs on my list being selected. Two are Suspect Device. Two are Cruel to Be Kind. Six are any version of Valerie. Two are Rolling in the Deep. Four are Son of a Preacher Man. One is Showdown. The other 10 are higher (Binky: lower) than #15 on my list.

Not a ton made the playlist, but still a good mix with familiar stuff I loved.

Playlist #15:

EMPTY PAGES - TRAFFIC @Pip's Invitation I'm not overly familar with Traffic. I came in for the bass and stayed for the drums.
YOU HELD ME IN YOUR ARMS - IDLEWILD @titusbramble new song and artist for me here. Great tune.
PINK FLAG - WIRE @scorchy another Wire song I dug. I think I have heard this one, but it wasn't ringing any bells so I added it to the list.

Random thoughts:

I am a little surprised by the Hysteria love, in a good way. I hate Love Bites with a firey passion, and this song is the polar opposite for me on this album.
Somebody would probably overtake Mrs. R for draft winner if they get me to add a Clash song to the list. I just don't get them.
Not sure how I forgot about that Ten Years After tune. I'd Love to Change the World is such a great track - nice pick, @zamboni
So far I am liking the variety of Radiohead picks. Not stuff I was expecting with There There and The Bends the last couple of days. I have my top 36 done and I have been obsessively relistening to the playlist this week to attempt to rank these songs. One of these is on there, and the other is making me reconsider WTF I am doing.
