Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

"Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" - The Buzzcocks

A Pete Shelley-penned tune, this one was picked because of the lead guitar riff between the lines he sings in the opening verse. Simple as that. The lyrics are typical guy/girl stuff, though it was new for a punk rock band to address the issue in such a bourgeois way. Or maybe that should be relatable way. Either way, it's from 1978, right when punk was dying off.

Respectively, #2, #80 and #21 on my Beatles rankings.

1. When was this countdown?
2. Yesterday is *80th* on your Beatles rankings? EIGHTIETH?
1. Last year. https://forums.footballguys.com/thr...nd-173-to-1-countdown-from-1-64-lists.803245/. 71 of us submitted our top 25. After those composite rankings were revealed, some of us submitted lists of 64 and those composite rankings were posted to see if things differed any.

2. That's more about what I think of the 79 songs ahead of it than any kind of criticism of it.

You're in for a treat.

@DrIanMalcolm This is actually a different countdown -- the one Krista did herself in 2019. Didn't involve formal ranking by anyone else. Both threads are very much worth reading if you have the time.

Yep. Gracias on the clarification.

Catching up on the class song thing. We had one when we "graduated" our Catholic K-8 school, it just meant the song they played over a slide show.

But there is no way we had one in high school, unless you're talking about the theme of prom or a dance. Like how would your class song even be used?

Doves' "There Goes The Fear" is very cool. It's got elements of a post-rock or post-hardcore without being either of those two genres. There's definitely a tension and release that those two genres are known for. It's also got a slight jam band feel towards the end and in its length.

Roots Manuva's "Dreamy Days" reminds me of Wyclef. That's a good thing.

Those are the two new-to-me songs I'm taking away from tonight's listening.

New-to-me favorites from #13:

There Goes the Fear -- Doves (Krista4). Another winner from them. The first half reminded me of the Coldplay deep tracks that have been picked in this exercise, and then the momentum really took off in the second half. The percussion-driven ending reminded me of Chicago's "Beginnings."
Bonny -- Prefab Sprout (Eephus). As with Marillion, I remember them being a big deal in the UK in the '80s, but I don't remember if I ever actually heard their music. Very interesting tune with a great melody.
Safety in Numbers -- Head Hands & Feet (Landryshat). An intriguing mix to me -- blooze-rock meets The Band.
I Found That Essence Rare -- Gang of Four (Worrierking). I didn't like this one quite as much as Damaged Goods, but it's got the same kind of appeal.

Hmm. I believe that I mentioned something about triskadecaphobia in the US countdown at this spot. I suppose I could add something about Thirteen O’Clock here, though that was Trevor Jones, not Bowie. Eh. Instead (also?) hopefully enjoy me taking a Deja Vote, all the Portishead, and yes, a little Bowie also.

Dr. Octopus did a Stones countdown https://forums.footballguys.com/thr...-four-musketeers-get-their-ya-yas-out.775791/, as Krista had done with the Beatles before (and I did with Neil Young later -- you saw the Facebook version of that).

Anarchy99 (not a participant in the current exercises) last year ran a Zeppelin vote/countdown in kind of the same format as these ones. https://forums.footballguys.com/thr...evee-breaks-from-led-zeppelin-iv-1971.802661/

Dunno if a Stevie, Bruce or Beatles covers exercise has been done. Before the pandemic I mostly stuck to the Shark Pool and didn't come to the FFA much. Others would have a better idea.

Just confirmed with some Bros from high school (1987) - our "class song" was from Canadian Power House - Glass Tiger

:bag:

P.S. God Bless Bryan Adams

I also didn’t go to my prom, so that’s maybe when it was announced.
I think that's different - the prom has a "theme" and a signature song based on that theme. Maybe it's in my Yearbook somewhere.
I can go back and check and also see Resident Octopus when he was young a beautiful and more importantly had a LOT of hair.
Our class song was Good Times Roll from The Cars. The prom song was Separate Ways by Journey. I only remember a few things about the prom. I remember slow dancing to the song Truly by Lionel Richie with my prom date, and he started singing it in my ear. :x I hated wearing the prom dress. It was like some ballroom gown, and that corsage my prom date gave me took up half my arm. I couldn't wait for it to be over so I could put on my street clothes, and go to the after party with everyone.
I sure hope the party was like this one.

Mandy was about his dog.

Hey, I know this song!

Nineteen-Point Selections:

KarmaPolice:

Life On Mars? – David Bowie
(new song)

Manster:

Glory Box (live Roseland NYC) - Portishead
(new song)

The Dreaded Marco:

Madame George - Van Morrison
(new song)

Mrs. Eephus:

Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
(new song)

krista4:

There Goes The Fear - Doves
(new song)
My top 5 of the well knowns.

I included my own this time because it's one of those great moment in time songs for me. I'd heard a few Van Morrison songs many times over the years of listening to classic rock radio, of course. Although they were good songs that I liked OK, I'd never been a true fan.

One late night on a houseboat in 2002 celebrating my FIL's birthday, I retreated to my "cabin" with another bourbon, my iPod and head phones . I was scrolling through albums and Astral Weeks came up early. I'd downloaded it but wasn't super familiar with it. Hit play.

Loved the title track. Beside You kept it going but wasn't (granted, bourbon)....then Sweet Thing caught my attention again. Cyprus Avenue and TWYLD were pretty OK, but it was 1 a.m. Madame George started and I was mesmerized from beginning to end. Listened to it 4 more times that night. Hundreds of times since.

Whoa, that Roots Manuva song made me feel like I was having a seizure. (Not an insult - it held my interest.)

so Roots Manuva is your "Mary Hart"?

I don't know?

Not a lot of new-to-me songs today. My favorites were from the Ee family with the Prefab Sprout and Karen Harding songs, cos's Jeff Beck selection, and Val's "Superstar," which was a shockingly fabulous version of the song.
Buy the concept album. It's really good. The dude playing Simon the Zealot is outstanding.

I have electricity again!

I also pulled out my senior yearbook as well as the one from my junior year. Nary a mention of a class theme song nor a prom theme. I thought about reaching out to high-school friends, but then the "my fantasy football board friends need to know" part made me hesitate.

I’d love to be involved in any sort of covers draft, Beatles covers in particular are almost as rewarding as the original work

On tour with Joan Jett this year. Maybe I'll go see him for a THIRD time! :excited:

I would have selected Cuts Like A Knife for this activity.

Yes - this was my big find from this playlist as well. Never heard of the band or song, but will check them out more.
Enjoyed that one too. I was just looking up their Wikipedia page, and it lists Rupert Grint (aka Ron Weasley) as a band member from 2001-2005 on drums/vocals. That’s got to be someone just messing with Wikipedia, right?

(Image capture)
I noticed that too. There’s no mention of it on any other Doves or Grint page, so I’m guessing it’s a joke.

Yeah, and Grint would have been 13 in 2001 too. It looks like the Wiki page was last updated over five years ago — love that it’s been up there for that long with no one seeming to care.
