Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Wow, OH had read me the thread when Steve posted it (since I dislike Steely Dan). Last night he told me it had really blown up, but I figured he was exaggerating.

It was suggested to me on my timeline, but it was already drawing comments from guys who specialize in talking about college football, among other things. Though the guy that commented back is a fairly heavy Twitter user, so that shouldn't surprise me.

But it was weird how many people were commenting on it. El-P's girlfriend among them. Weird, small world when you post something online publicly.

New-to-me favorites today: "Darklands" by The Jesus and Mary Chain - oooooo, this one gets a big heart and spot on my playlist.

Ack, I guess that was the only one, though "Morning Glory" and "Borstal Boys" got added as "songs I realized I knew and wanted on there." Just not many new songs for me (or likely anyone else) today.

ETA: Also the one that killed Franz Ferdinand goes in the latter category.

Gavrilo is a phenomenal shot, huh

What can I say? After a string where the division between known and unknown was a bit more balanced (if still very much leaning towards known), today we hit one new artist and relatively few new songs. So, especially as rankings climb and numbers shrink, I can’t be totally surprised by this ratio.

#9s
Recognized by title alone: 29
Sounded familiar: 1 (Do You Want To, which I recognized quickly, but not by title)
Knew from this countdown: 4
Didn't know: 7

Selected Favorites:
Radio, Radio (worrierking/rockaction)
Just Like Heaven (Just Win Baby)
Mr. Crowley (Hawks64)
I Can’t Explain (The Dreaded Marco)
This Is The Day (Eephus)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Long Snake Moan (Pip’s Invitation)
Darklands (scorchy)
Borstal Boys (OliverHumanzee)
The Ghost in You (KarmaPolice) - Yep, time to spotlight a song I liked but didn’t put down here when it showed up before

Really wish I had the energy to go back and post about all the great songs from the last 5 or 6 days, but burned most of it going through all my stacked-up work emails instead. :crying: Made it back to inbox zero by 8:30 pm. Yay me!

Long Snake Moan - PJ Harvey (Pip’s Invitation) - Was hoping something from PJ's commercial breakthrough would show up. Didn't expect it to be this amazing track.

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd (simey/Yankee23Fan) - My other favourite Floyd song. So good.

Just Like Heaven – Cure (Just Win Baby) - To my ear, one of the greatest pop songs ever written. How another of my favorite bands (Dinosaur Jr) managed to butcher it is beyond me.

Do You Want To - Franz Ferdinand (MAC_32) - Thanks for proving FF were no one-trick pony.

This Is The Day - The The (Eephus) - Didn't think my love for this could get bigger, but then it got needle-dropped at the end of my favorite guilty pleasure, Empire Records.

I DO NOT KNOW WHY I SPENT TIME DOING THIS SO PLEASE DON'T ASK WHY.

Since we have so many duplicate songs at this point, I wanted to see how many people I could connect with the following: "Tomorrow [xxxxx] will select a song previously chosen by [xxxxx]." Should have done this for today when we had only new artist, as maybe I'd have hit fewer dead ends that way. Here's the longest one I could put together:

***Please note that when I say you chose a song previously selected by another drafter, your song might actually have been selected by multiple other drafters. I know this but selected the one that would best keep the chain going. Do not mention the other people who selected your song.***

shuke will have a song previously selected by jwb.

New Binky the Doormat: Abbey Road Medley - The Beatles - The first time I was ever in a college bar, I was either a sophomore or junior in high school visiting my cousins at Ohio U, and there was band playing that covered this in its entirety. Was awesome. Up to that point was one of the greatest nights of my life.

worrierking: Radio, Radio - Elvis Costello - I'm not a big fan of his, but this is one I like.

Hawks64: Mr. Crowley – Ozzy Osbourne

Eephus: This Is The Day - The The

The Few. The Proud. The Not-as-Chalky.

I'm personally just a tad surprised by where The Who stands as of now - appears they will be moving into 2nd place in points. They were one of the groups I debated on for top 10 but didn't see them doing this well. I realize they've peaked but they seem like a good bet to stay top 10.

Are you saying you didn't expect them to be top 10? IMO that would seem to be an odd expectation.

My top 10 from the 23 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. @Dr. Octopus : When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
  2. @simey, @Yankee23Fan : Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd
  3. @New Binky the Doormat : Abbey Road Medley - The Beatles
  4. @DrIanMalcolm : Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits
  5. @Hov34 : Ramble On – Led Zeppelin
  6. @Chaos34 : Train In Vain (Stand By Me) - The Clash
  7. @krista4 : Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
  8. @Don Quixote, @Mister CIA : Back To Black - Amy Winehouse
  9. @Manster : Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
  10. @Sullie : You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ – Judas Priest
Best round yet IMO. As it should be.

I have 8 artists I thought could/would finish ahead of them - Beatles, LZ, Stones, Kinks, Bowie, Radiohead, Floyd, Elton John. That leaves them 9th - I had two more that I put in about the same tier - Van Morrison and U2. My point really was I’m just surprised seeing them currently sitting in 2nd but obviously lots of points are still left out there.

Very Old Testament.

Re: the Abbey Road medley. I’ve posted this amazing cover before, but worth doing so again.
I think I lost track of this after you posted this last time. They nailed it throughout, but those last 5 minutes. Wow...
Had to listen to this again in its entirety. You're spot on that they really bring it to an entirely new level starting with "Golden Slumbers" at the 11:00 mark.

AAABatteries:

Zombie - The Cranberries
(duplicate – seventh vote)

I obviously expected Zombie to do well as I picked it as the most selected non-Big 3 song in the contest. So, I'm happy to be giving it a 7th vote even if it doesn't hang on. Song is just awesome and was one of the first I had down on my list. I like other Cranberries songs like Dream and Linger but this was always going to be the one for me.

Twenty-Three-Point Selections:

New Binky the Doormat:
Abbey Road Medley - The Beatles
DrIanMalcolm: Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits
Dr. Octopus: When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
Manster: Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
Andy Dufresne: Forever Young - Rod Stewart
simsarge: She Loves You - The Beatles
Mt. Man: Moondance - Van Morrison
landrys hat: Into The Mystic - Van Morrison
falguy: Where The Streets Have No Name - U2
Hov34: Ramble On – Led Zeppelin
Ilov80s: Time Of The Season - The Zombies
Chaz McNulty: Your Song – Elton John
Zegras11: A Hard Day’s Night - The Beatles
krista4: Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2

Other favorites from this round. Special shout out to @landrys hat selection of Into the Mystic. Possibly my favorite whiskey drinking song of all-time.

My thoughts exactly. Was one of the first songs I wrote down. And I'm not positive, but it may be 'my' song because I had it at 29. ;-)

New-to-me favorites from #9. Not much to pick from because I knew almost everything.

This Is the Day -- The The (Eephus). I recognize the chorus but not the verses -- was the chorus used in an ad? Uplifting and melodic.
Borstal Boys -- Faces (OH). I only know their radio songs. The blooze mayhem that they were so good at creating.
Mr. Crowley -- Ozzy Osbourne (Hawks64). I knew of this song, thanks to all the PMRC outcries and such, but I'd never actually heard it. It sounds menacing and yet vulnerable.

simey: How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees
Teenage Eephus was a dumbass for thinking this song sucked. It's absolutely beautiful.
I can't stand the Bee Gees. I like more testicles in my male singers. But this song is just lovely. It may be the only song of theirs that I like.
Are you referring to their high pitched/falsetto singing? If so, they use their normal voices in most of How Deep is Your Love (maybe that is why you like it), and most all of their early work is in their normal voices. Smokey Robinson would have zero testicles, because he always sang falsetto, and Robert Plant did it a lot with Led Zeppelin, and referred to his as a "full, open throated falsetto." What's this? It's your favorite Freddie singing a whole song in falsetto.

So you've never listened to an FM rock station?

So you've never listened to an FM rock station?

The FM rock stations around here NEVER played the big metal acts until bands like Quiet Riot and Poison started hitting the Top 40 -- and even then, you still wouldn't hear Ozzy, Maiden, Priest, etc.

New Orleans also didn't have an equivalent of Los Angeles' KROQ (sp?) that played non-hit-single post-punk & new wave except for Tulane University's student-run station.

I had two Van Morrison songs on my list originally, I don't remember seeing the other one show up yet.
