Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (6 Viewers)

Quick word on my selection of Black Dog. That riff man!! First time I heard this song I must've been 8 or 9 maybe, I can't remember. My dad used to record his albums on cassette tapes for ease of listening... I used to love to go thru em and put on the phones.....he didn't trust me with his vinyl just yet!.I found Led Zeppelin 4 and put it in the tape player, put the phones on, and Black Dog hit my ears. I rewound it and played it over, and over. The riff, the lyrics.....is there a more perfect just straight up rock song?

They were one of the groups I debated on for top 10 but didn't see them doing this well. I realize they've peaked but they seem like a good bet to stay top 10.
I'm surprised that you're surprised because i figured they would be closer to 3 than 11. Originally I may have included them in the Big 4.
Agreed, in fact I want a list of drafters who didn't put the big 3 + The Who, Bowie and Elton on their list. So they can go on my own "special" list.
No Beatles or Zep on my list :hey:

Fvaorties from the non-chalky songs today:

timschochet:

1921 - The Who
(new song)

zamboni:

I Don't Need No Doctor (live) - Humble Pie
(new song)

Oliver Humanzee:

Borstal Boys - Faces
(new song)

The only song on today's list I don't know. I will probably make through today's unknown list :)

ditkaburgers:

I Took A Little Something – Version – Florrie
(new artist)

Yes, thank god for ditkaburgers giving us something to do!
“Ditkaburgers had the only new artist” is one of the easier correct predictions I’ve made.

I may have overestimated the love for Floyd and Radiohead.

Right now - probably not including today, The Who has had 22 songs selected, Radiohead 8 and Pink Floyd 9 - that's definitely surprising to me. With a lot of points up for grabs it could be The Who finishes closer to 10 than 4 still.

ETA - my numbers may be a little off but close enough to say they've doubled up those artists.

People who like Floyd and Radiohead often REALLY like them. I would not be surprised to see heavy doses of both inside the top 5.

This one is already taken, too.

Oh, just be Harley Quinn like you always were going to be and get it over with. ;)

In all seriousness, were Blossom or Buttercup from the Powerpuff Girls taken? Would that count?

I don't see Harley Quinn on the list, so I guess she's available. I'll have to read about her. Superheroes are not my forte.

Looks like Buttercup is taken, but Blossom is available due to a recent departure from the company. Maybe I could figure out a way to get the "Rocket Raccoon" or "Squirrel Girl" people fired.
Is Usagi Yojimbo available? Stan Sakai's site has all the details. It's one of the most beautifully drawn comics. The original artwork section is wonderful.
No way!....I actually have an Usagi Yojimbo #1 (I think) comic in a box in my basement!
If you have Albedo #2, it's worth abot 8K.

ETA - my numbers may be a little off but close enough to say they've doubled up those artists.

Also not true. The Who have had 13 songs selected. Let me tally the others.

Ahhhh, I bet I (we?) was (were?) misreading your point. You mean "selections," not "songs selected," maybe?

Wait, that can't be right, either, since The Who have been selected 26 times overall so far.

My next guess is you pulled numbers out of your ***?

# of selections per artist (note that this may or may not include situations where an fbg has selected an artist multiple times. i dont feel like verifying at this time. it will be close, tho.

This one's not very meaningful as it definitely does not take into account multiple selections by the same person. For instance, you can see in the prior chart that The Beatles have had 20 songs selected, but this one shows them with only 14 total selections, which obviously is way off. The Beatles have had 27 total selections.

What people think are the "obvious" choices definitely vary a lot across our 45 drafters. I remember at the beginning that shuke insisted that there was a Big 4 that everyone should have, and his Big 4 added an artist - Pink Floyd - that you don't have on your list of six must-haves.

:lmao:

I'm just using the spreadsheet as it's showing to me. The Who has 22 selections (not individual songs) per the spreadsheet.

The Who has had 22 songs selected,

This way of describing it is weird and implies 22 different songs, not selections. Be better. ;)

Yeah, my bad - it was selections - just still surprised The Who would have 22 (or 24 now) selections versus around half that for Floyd and Radiohead. So far at least.
Aren’t you the same dude that ripped Baba O’ Reilly last night? Methinks you’re lacking proper respect for Townshend, Daltry, Moon and Entwistle.

As much as I love Led Zeppelin, I’ve got The Who as firmly #3 only behind the Beatles and Stones. Zep is 3a in my book. Who started earlier, has the whole British Invasion thing, greater longevity, etc.

Nope, not me - I selected it earlier in the countdown.

Some very early teasers and answers. I'm posting these mostly because some of you made guesses at them, either publicly or via PM to me. I'm not going to post your guesses in order to protect your pride. ;) Again, these are extremely early so are not spoilers as a lot changed between the first five lists and the total of 45.

From December 21 (partial list - I'm withholding a couple of the questions as they would be spoilers):

- In addition to the Big Three, there are six additional artists that have been listed four times each. One of those was, IIRC, not listed in the guesses for top choices. This artist is currently at #5 and has three votes for the same song, which is currently the second-ranked song in the countdown.
Answers: David Bowie, The Clash, Elton John, The Who, The Smiths, Elvis Costello
The Clash – London Calling

- The current "we like you, but we don't like like you" artist has four votes accounting for only 50 total points. In contrast, the highest number of points right now (also with four votes) is 109.
Answers: Elvis Costello (50), The Beatles (109)

- On the other hand, the "when we love you, we really love you" award goes to an artist with 80 points but only three votes.
Answer: Pink Floyd

Later, from December 23, with ten lists tabulated (again, very early and would change):

- Our Big Three each have made nine of 10 lists. We have another artist that also has made nine of 10 lists – and has moved into the #4 slot as a result (The Who) - and another that has shown up on eight but is lagging in 8th place (David Bowie).

- The “when we love them we really love them” artist previously mentioned still has only shown up on five ballots, but with enough support to sit in fifth place. (Pink Floyd)

- There is a second tier forming now of seven artists currently holding 122-197 points (The Who, Pink Floyd, Elton John, The Clash, David Bowie, The Kinks, Radiohead). The next artist down from there has fewer than 100 points, including one surprising underachiever (U2).

- There is a new leader for our Ace Award (most points for an artist with only one song taken), but I expect this artist to get more songs selected. (Romeo and Juliet – Dire Straits) Then again, I would have said the same for Cheap Trick.

@AAABatteries , as someone mentioned, Pink Floyd has very fervent fans. See the three parts I've put in red above. I'm not saying they'll overtake The Who (or that they won't), but as they said you might see a lot more of their songs in the upper reaches than you would for The Who, whom most everyone likes but maybe aren't as wacko about.

Twenty-Three-Point Selections:

Pip’s Invitation:

Long Snake Moan - PJ Harvey
(new song)

simey:

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
(duplicate – second AND third votes today)

Just Win Baby:

Just Like Heaven – Cure
(duplicate – second vote

scorchy:

Darklands - The Jesus and Mary Chain
(new song)

Eephus:

This Is The Day - The The
(new song)

falguy:

Where The Streets Have No Name - U2
(duplicate – second vote)

Hov34:

Ramble On – Led Zeppelin
(duplicate – second vote)

krista4:

Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
(duplicate – fourth vote)
I was very familiar with all but 7 of the songs today based just on the title. Excellent playlist today.

These are my favorites of the lot. I'm at a point now where I'll have to list some repeats or there'd only 1-2 songs to highlight.

Of those that I didn't recognize by title my favorites were the Massive Attack and Faces songs.

Because this is relevant (slightly!) to the thread and things discussed before (let's keep this cool) anybody tuning into Twitter would do well to search for "Albini, Steely Dan." Damn thing is making the rounds. It got all the way back to me, and I follow basically nobody on Twitter.

Hey nineteen!

Wow, OH had read me the thread when Steve posted it (since I dislike Steely Dan). Last night he told me it had really blown up, but I figured he was exaggerating.

Count me in on this whole thread, being a combo of A) Steely Dan hate and B) "If you have nothing nice to say, come sit by me."

I think Floyd will have a flurry in the top 10

Albini's rants are funny and his critiques are somewhat justified. I am an unapologetic Steely Dan fan. There are 10,000 other bands who I would dunk on before them, including many in each of the two threads we've enjoyed.

The "not bald guy" was pretty funny.

just saw him on an old Anthony Bourdain - seems like a pretty cool, grounded guy

and I like Steely Dan - but think his comments are bitingly funny

There are 34 cases of someone taking a song on my list. Two are Suspect Device. Two are Cruel to Be Kind. One is Every Picture Tells a Story. Six are Valerie. Two are Rolling in the Deep. Four are Son of a Preacher Man. One is Showdown. Three are How Soon Is Now? Three are London Calling. Three are Baby Blue. The other seven are higher (Binky: lower) than #10 on my list.
Seems subjective

Yeah, my bad - it was selections - just still surprised The Who would have 22 (or 24 now) selections versus around half that for Floyd and Radiohead. So far at least.
I consider Floyd more of an album band than a song band. They certainly had a few songs that were classic rock staples but imo much of their stuff works best in the context of the full album.

Agree and to be clear the reason I pointed out so far is because I do expect Floyd and Radiohead to make a run. And to be further clear - I have The Who in my list and not those other two so it's not that I dislike them - I'm just surprised based solely on years of posts from folks at FBGs about the 3 bands.

Yeah, I guess I didn't word that very clearly. Must be the SARS.

No Beatles or Zep on my list :hey:

reaction.

It sounds slightly ridiculous to me.
What does this mean?
He's probably the most diverse musically in his output than any other artist selected.
I don't have any idea what Andy is thinking, but - to me - The Beatles were at least as diverse in a much shorter period of time. I'm sure some here would include The Kinks, too. Nothing against Bowie, but his "musical chameleon" title gets overblown IMO.
