Hawks64:

Roxanne – Sting
(new song)

:oldunsure: Brainwave from earlier? I posted about this song before the list was released today. Hmmm...
This mention of Sting reminded me of David Lynch's Dune, and made me think of another potential superhero for @krista4 ...

I don't know if you've seen or know much about Dune, but Paul Atreides' mother, Lady Jessica, is pretty bad arse with her Bene Gesserit powers. Of course, Dune being a popular series ... someone might already have her. I wonder if anyone has other Dune characters like Paul Atreides (aka Muad'Dib)?

What the hell is going on in here? Are you guys playing cards?

Sorry, we can get back to the music! Appreciate everyone's help!

(Oh, I also need three "fun facts" about myself. Yippee.)
1. My ex-husband and current rent-paying roommate is totally BFFs with Steve Albini.
2. In certain corners of the world, I am the renowned radio personality "Beatle Fan Krista."
3. My friend keeps being nominated for Grammys and losing, and if it happens again I'm going to sue.

The song was released in 1971, but did not hit my radar before 1979. Is there anyway to capture the love for this song in the years 1972-1978. I'm thinking it was birthed a forgotten gem.

Baba O'Riley used to get played a lot on rock radio in the 70s, probably more than We Won't Get Fooled Again because it's 3 1/2 minutes shorter.
Yeah, my 1970's radio memory comes up short. tbh, it was well past 2000 before I was familar with Slade's body of work (as an example). They were just one of those mysterious bands featured on my album cover sleeves, along with Lobo.

I'm gonna bow out here. Baby O'Riley is a good song, just not that worthy.

Spider-Gwen!

I now consider myself 1000x more knowledgeable about super heroes than I did entering the day.

Because I don't know much, really.

Me too! I even read about Herogasm now - ew.

@Doug B , I've never seen Buffy, but she is taken anyway, as it Spider-Gwen.

This superhero stuff is just the legal department, but that's 300+ people.

I think I like Snowbird or one of the Game of Thrones people best.

I’ve seen the movie a long time ago. Never the series.
I'm doing yet another slow rewatch, and I am still suprised at how well written it is. Still my favorite all-time show.

I'm doing yet another slow rewatch with plenty of interruptions to watch terrible movies when I get high, and I am still suprised at how well written it is. Still my favorite all-time show.
Fixed.

How dare you.

I am currently watching Piranha 3D, and that is a fantastic movie.

Family business

Mrs. Eephus: Autonomy – Buzzcocks (not The Buzzcocks)
Buzzcocks songs picked previously were written and sung by Pete Shelley (RIP) but Mrs. Eephus opts for the Punk Rock heart and soul of the band Steve Diggle. The band's stage show has always consisted of Diggle doing rock star **** at stage right while Shelley looked on wryly from center stage.

"Autonomy" was originally a b-side but it's been a staple of the live shows for decades. Mrs. Eephus loves its galloping intro and shoutalong chorus. For her "there's not much better than yelling "I want you autonomy" at the top of my lungs". I don't know quite how to take that.
The main guitar riff sounds like metal, and the guitar solo sounds like arena rock. Definitely not what you expect from Buzzcocks. But definitely something that would go over well onstage.

New-to-me favorites from #10:

I Can't Control Myself -- The Troggs (Don Quixote). I don't know their material beyond Wild Thing and Love Is All Around. This is a strong tune that holds interest throughout, despite sounding like a '60s pop song written for people not really capable of playing that style.
Me and Howard Hughes -- The Boomtown Rats (Tim). Energetic, catchy new wave. It is new wave, yes? Sometimes we get tripped up over that.
Diary of a Madman -- Ozzy Osbourne (Zamboni). Never heard this album in full. I like how this builds.
Carrion -- British Sea Power (Titusbramble). Kind of sounds like Bowie, which is a plus in my book.

10? 10?! Ten! Ten!!! For everything, everything, everything, everything! Or, at minimum, the 45 songs on today’s list.

#10s
Recognized by title alone: 24
Sounded familiar: 3
Knew from this countdown: 5
Didn't know: 12

Special Shout Out: Skateaway (Doug B) - I was debating putting this in ‘favorites’, but this was one my Last 5 Out. So that felt like cheating a little. But hey, what better use of this category, right?

Selected Favorites:
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Binky)
Let My Love Open the Door (Dr. Octopus)
From The Beginning (higgins)
Shooting Star (simsarge)
Sympathy for the Devil (falguy)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Me And Howard Hughes (timscochet)
Stand By Me (scorchy)
Another Girl, Another Planet (Eephus)
The Cave (AAABatteries)

A lot of first timers among the twenty-two pointers today.

New Binky the Doormat: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Manster: Into The Void - Black Sabbath
The past few days, I was thinking I should have picked Deep Purple instead of Sabbath for the top seven contest but this was a good points day for Sabbath. I prefered "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" of the two but they're both pretty cool and Ozzy could really sing in his prime.

titusbramble: Carrion - British Sea Power
Love this song and drafted it in Genrepalooza. Love the guitars and there are a lot of them.

simey: How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees
Teenage Eephus was a dumbass for thinking this song sucked. It's absolutely beautiful.

Don Quixote: I Can’t Control Myself - The Troggs
Considering changing my ringtone to the "oh no" in the introduction. Pretty cool song that threads the needle between garage rock and bubblegum.

timschochet: Me And Howard Hughes - Boomtown Rats
Used to have this album in college. Thanks for brining back a memory. It's probably the only record to ever namecheck both Howard Hughes and Eva Braun.

Hawks64: Roxanne – Sting
Great song obviously but old Sting not attempting the falsetto chorus takes it down a peg IMO.

DrIanMalcolm: Shine A Light - The Rolling Stones
Exile is deep deep deep and side 4 may be the most solid of them all. Taylor's guitar solo is sensational.

scorchy: Stand By Me (MTV Unplugged) - Liam Gallagher
This household is strongly Team Liam but can you imagine being in potentially, right now, still the coolest band in the world and not doing it because you’re in a mard with your brother?

Sullie: The Nile Song - Pink Floyd
Well, didn't see this one coming. Sounds more like Deep Purple or Black Sabbath than the direction Pink Floyd would take in the 70s.

Mister CIA: Amoreena - Elton John
krista4: Rocket Man – Elton John
Enjoyed both of these. Elton & Taupin wrote some great songs and the backing band is very tight.

Mrs. Rannous: When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
I've probably told this one before but now @ditkaburgers is here to vouch for me. We did a little end of summer trip with the kids to Santa Cruz and met up with the family of one of db's brother's friends for a day of rides and junk food on the boardwalk. When we were heading out we stopped off at one of the arcades. This was during the golden age of rhythm games like Dance Dance Revolution so they had a drumming video game with some pads and a stool. The other dad used to be the drummer for Game Theory and Thin White Rope so I knew we were in for some fun when he sat down and inserted the coins. He chose this song and drew a crowd of about 25 people wandering in from the boardwalk by the time he finished.

higgins: From The Beginning – Emerson, Lake & Palmer
A very nice and non-bombastic song from ELP.

The Dreaded Marco: Death Of A Disco Dancer - The Smiths
All of the band's albums are solid but I think Johnny Marr never played better than on their final album Strangeways, Here We Come.

simsarge: Shooting Star - Bad Company
Rock 'n Roll raised to the level of mythology.

Mt. Man: Hold On Tight - Electric Light Orchestra
Like "Rock On" yesterday and a few others in the countdown, this song simultaneously looks to the past and the future. I don't speak French but the accents in the French verse seem questionable.

falguy: Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones
Heavy hitter. Not much to add other than it's in the pantheon.

Hov34: Bad – U2
Always a showstopper in concert. Still no picks from Achtung Baby

Doug B: Skateaway - Dire Straits
But the music make her want to be the story and the story was whatever was the song what it was

AAABatteries: The Cave - Mumford & Sons
I don't think I've ever listened to a Mumford & Sons album but each of the song picks were immediately recognizable which shows how much they were able to crack the elusive US market which many artists here were unable to do.

cosjobs: Watch Your Step - Elvis Costello
Trust is the sleeper album in Costello's early catalog. The others were the first, the first with the Attractions, the one with the hits, the one with 20 songs, the Beatlesque one but Trust is chock full of songs that show EC's range, ambition and craft.

Apologies to Ozzy and Coldplay, I'm out of ideas.

We're getting too deep (Binky: shallow) in the countdown to be posting favorites because there's too much. So I'll just comment on a premiers.

A couple picks I'm pleasantly surprised to see:
DrIanMalcolm: Shine A Light - The Rolling Stones
Sullie: The Nile Song - Pink Floyd
Mister CIA: Amoreena - Elton John

Great pick here. I know there's been a little talk in thread about them, @General Malaise and I are the closet Coldplay fans on the board.
Chaz McNulty: Yellow – Coldplay

And then there's this. I don't know much about the The Smiths so this is new to me. Fantastic!
The Dreaded Marco: Death Of A Disco Dancer - The Smiths

Carrion -- British Sea Power (Titusbramble). Kind of sounds like Bowie, which is a plus in my book.

Eek, I forgot to list this as one I enjoyed a lot, too. And I thought exactly the same thing - very Bowie-esque vocal sound.

They changed their name to Sea Power after Brexit and released a pretty good album last year.

I reached out on Snowbird, Arya Stark, and Brienne of Tarth. Snowbird just got taken by someone else and wasn't reflected on the list! Arya is of questionable eligibility according to the vetter of the superheroes: " I don’t believe Brienne of Tarth used her abilities for self-serving needs. Arya, could be borderline, though I loved her character. I need to revisit her character’s attributes."

:lmao:

:lmao: so stupid

Ø Magic, flight and strength are good examples. Abilities that any human has (compassion, optimism), do not a superhero make.

Ø Superhero-adjacent characters/teammates (i.e. Peggy Carter, Agent Coulson, members of the bat-family) may be considered.
Oracle would fit in some ways, but I'm sure she's been taken.
Too bad that they called out magic. Probably means that Zatanna isn't under the radar.
Though obviously given recent experience, the answer is (the female) Captain Britain >.>

I assume Trinity is taken? How about Selene from Underworld?

Me and Howard Hughes -- The Boomtown Rats (Tim). Energetic, catchy new wave. It is new wave, yes? Sometimes we get tripped up over that
I guess it’s new wave. The early Boomtown Rats (this song was from their 2nd album) have a lot in common with early Bruce Springsteen actually in that a lot of their tunes are epic with long interludes.

I might end up with Brienne. I like that she rises to the highest ranks in a "man's world," which I had to do for my type of work. I like that she is noble and loyal above all else. And my reference to "all boobs" earlier meant I didn't want some geek's sexualized concept of what an ideal woman is, which Brienne certainly isn't.

She doesn't have any powers. How about Zatanna or Squirrel Girl?

In the 1982-83 SNL season, Julia Louis-Dreyfus played Weather Woman, who could change the weather by 9 degrees.

The only internet evidence of it seems to be on this tumblr page: https://classicajays.tumblr.com/post/78866377783/this-was-a-silly-little-super-hero-sketch-from-the

I bet that's not taken!
I do love the weather woman idea,..... 9 degrees is nothing to scoff at! 😂

Clicking on that link brought another idea.....Toonces! I mean it's a cat who could drive a ****ing car! And I believe K4 is a feline connoisseur.....perfect fit!

New Wave is one of those terms that was used more generically at the time to refer to artists that were new. It's ossified into something different in the decades since.

I'll have to look those and a few of the others up tomorrow. :)

Wait, I didn't see the Weather Woman suggestion earlier. :lmao:

I have the feeling Toonces wouldn't have the right motivations for the vetter of superhero selections.

simey: How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees
Teenage Eephus was a dumbass for thinking this song sucked. It's absolutely beautiful.
One thing that has come out of this thread - and Tim’s 1977 countdown - is how misjudged the Brothers Gibb were by so many. At a time when the only cool thing connecting B and G was CBGB.
Disco sucks!! jk.....kinda
My dad had their albums. I never really got into em. I'm pretty sure if were a teen in the 70's I would've had a t-shirt with the above phrase.

Sadly already covered above (Squirrel Girl twice!) and already taken.

I feel like if you really highlight the car driving capability, just maybe........or you could present this version

I was a teen in the 70s and went to discos with my friends. Had some high waisted, wide legged gabardine slacks and everything.

It wasn't my favorite type of music but the ability to dance helped me woo Mrs. Eephus years later. I just didn't care for "How Deep Is Your Love" because it wasn't what would later be called a banger, it was kind of a mid-tempo song that was too fast for slow dancing and not fast enough to jerk around semi-rhythmically.

Good on you for possibly having worn a T-shirt saying “My dad had their albums”.

Well I'm a horrible dancer, and I drove a tercel, and I was still able to woo Mrs Manster....I'm not sure if that says more about her, or me 🤔

Three Deja Votes tomorrow. One is a song making its countdown debut, one gets its second and third votes, and one gets its third and fourth votes.

In addition, we will have the first song to receive its seventh vote. As a reminder, the winning song in the US countdown ("Superstition") received a total of seven votes.
I welcome our new Verve overlords with open arms.
