Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

That Hawkwind song reminded me a little of Sun Ra.

I saw one of Nik Turner's (RIP) post-Hawkwind projects in late 2015. It was more weird than good but entertaining in a bizarre way. Mrs. E sat that one out so I went with my neighbor the drunk. He thought it was a good idea to drop some acid and disappeared during the second song of Turner's set. He may have gone into outer space because I never found him again that night.

This thread now has the same number of songs (2) that the US thread had that I saw played at my first Grateful Dead concert.

Can you name them?

Lucky 7 had a few more songs I didn’t recognize. Including some repeats, if that makes sense. Plus my 2nd Deja Vote! A high 5 to Just Win Baby for that, of course, even as I (morally) can’t include him below.

#7s
Recognized by title alone: 25
Sounded familiar: 2
Knew from this countdown: 6
Didn't know: 9

Selected Favorites:
This Is Love (MAC_32)
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (Dr. Ian Malcolm)
Fake Plastic Trees (Dr. Octopus)
Young Lust (Doug B)
Thunderstruck (Val Rannous) - I’m not overly sad about missing this one, but cleverness (and/or attention to detail) deserves a (small) reward

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Remember You (rockaction)
The Slider (cosjobs)
Lay Me Down (krista4)
I Wanna Be Adored (Mrs. Eephus) -

New-to-me favorites from #7:

Remember You -- The Zombies (Rockaction). I only know Odessy & Oracle and their two mid-60s hits. This is just as charming as the O&O stuff.
Lay Me Down -- The Frames (Krista4). Lovely. This may only make sense in my head, but it reminds me of some of the White Album acoustic ballads.
Plug in Baby -- Muse (Titusbramble). Dig the frenetic energy.

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
I Wanna Be Adored (Mrs. Eephus) -
It’s been picked like 5 times and you still don’t know it? 🤨
Clearly he didn't adore the song ENOUGH.
I still don't know it now!
More seriously, some rounds with few(er) total unknowns I've been putting songs that I discovered from the draft in that category. I might have to label those more thoroughly, apparently. >.>

Wow, out of the thread for 36 hours and missed 9 pages... haven't caught up yet, but here is my top 10 from the 24 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. scorchy: Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
  2. New Binky the Doormat: Kashmir - Led Zeppelin -- my #21 song in the Zep countdown
  3. Yankee23Fan: Baba O'Riley – The Who
  4. Mt. Man: Fool In The Rain - Led Zeppelin -- not ranked in my top 25 in the Zep countdown... but obviously I like the song a lot
  5. Zegras11: In Between Days - The Cure
  6. Dr. Octopus: Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
  7. Manster: Time - Pink Floyd
  8. Chaz McNulty: One – U2 -- my #4 song in the most recent U2 countdown
  9. Chaos34: Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
  10. AAABatteries: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 -- not ranked in my top 25 in the most recent U2 countdown
Another very strong round.

  14. Ilov80s: Back To Black - Amy Winehouse
  15. Val Rannous: Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Very tough to narrow it down to 15! Easily the strongest round yet for my taste.

I had no idea Thunderstruck was eligible. Had I known, it would have made my list, somewhere just above the cut line. Great song!

What is a Rizzle Kick?
:hey:

I'm so excited I know a @ditkaburgers song. And the only reason I know is Thanks to our exchange student from Norway in around 2012. She was all excited because the ginger named Ed Sheehan came to Nashville and she really wanted to go. So we went even though I had no idea who he was at the time.

Well, Rizzle Sticks opened up for him. I enjoyed them more than I did the ginger :bag:
OH MY GOD!! HOW WERE THEY!?!?

There IS a Prince version of NC2U.

I'm not a big Prince fan to begin with but... I thought it would be better. I would have liked to hear him sing it in the stripped down style that Sinead did.

reaction.

really? there's a Prince version?

just catching up today and saw this ...
What? Everyone knows he wrote it. But he never actually publicly performed it AFAIK.

He did perform it from time to time - was on his greatest hits 2-disc set.

like I said, I was drug there against my will and didn't know who Sheeran was and didn't "get it". But was pleasantly surprised and entertained. Liked your song very much and also remembering Mama Humping and Miss Cigarette as standouts.

Sorry for the spotlighting if anyone else was going to take Rizzle.

It's actually a visceral feeling when listening to a playlist and a few songs in a row that just aren't your jam come on but then... One that IS fills your ears.

Living On A Thin Line

Kayleigh I thought that we'd always be friends
We said our love would last forever
So how did it come to this bitter end?

I've had little time to participate this week. I have a slow workday and have been going through the song list to create a plan for listening to unknown stuff (I'm thinking Fat Tuesday, when I'll be off and Worrierqueen will be in New Orleans).

While going through posts and lists, I have found myself very happy that these songs on my list have been getting considerable love:

More than This
Solsbury Hill
In God's Country (I thought I might be alone on this one)
I Found that Essence Rare (Also thought I might be alone)

Songs not on my list but could have been that I am happy to see get appreciation:

Living on a Thin Line
Fake Plastic Trees.

Hey Jude Reprise
They must have out na-na-na-nahd the Beatles by a healthy amount, which isn't an easy thing to do here.

Hey Jude

That coda is why I chose the song. I have a story. It was too long in my head yesterday, but this morning I can keep it kinda brief. HS basketball. We had an undefeated arch rival with a huge raucus and almost frightening home court advantage. Our bus was pounded on by 40 hands as we entered their campus through narrow gates. Same for the locker room as we dressed for the varsity game. They took us apart in the first half. Led by 15. Their crowd was incredible, standing room only, and so loud. Coach shattered the chalk board in that locker room, accidentally, but he was furious. Put us in a full court press falling back to an aggressive half court trap and we went on a long run. Beat them by 17. Our little away game contingent was the loudest thing in that gym as the clock ran down. Our cheerleaders fired up na na, na na na na, hey hey, goodbye. In the locker room dressing for the ride home it evolved into na na na na, hey jude and carried over all the way to McDonald's where we celebrated with burgers and fries. We happy few.

Anyway, I refused to let The Beatles catalog vex my brain. It was an easy choice.

Great story. I think McDonald's missed a marketing opportunity.

I really like The Cult. I even think the album Beyond Good and Evil is good. The guitar riff on She Sells Sanctuary is probably my favorite of all time.

Speaking of guitars, the work and sound on Driver's Seat is great. That's a great jam.

Another great selection is Run Runaway - love the driving drum beat. Good choice @Val Rannous !

Solsbury Hill might win this thing and almost all would be right with the world if it did.

You all really love that Amy Winehouse, don't you?

Definitely a few more that I'm not familiar with on today's list. Gonna dig in.

"Cadillac" - T. Rex (1972)

This might wind up ugly on the playlist because there are only live versions available on Spotify and they aren't very good. So I've included a different version and link here for anybody interested. This is a track that was left off of The Slider, but I found its groove infectious as a younger man. For the second time in as many days, I've picked a rolling swinger for a sunny, summer day even though it's February. This is pretty jammy as far as a bass line goes, and it has a repetitive riff that carries the song. Bolan here also is infatuated with the idea of the word "Baby," it seems. Anyway, enjoy or wonder what the heck I was doing picking this one for T. Rex.

Baby I wanna walk you home
Oh baby I wanna walk you home
There's a shadow in the bedroom
And I'm scared to sleep alone

Baby doesn't everybody weep
Oh baby doesn't everybody weep
I'd slide up there beside you
But my nightmare's oh too steep

Baby I wanna buy you a Cadillac
Baby I wanna buy you a Cadillac
I bought it with my soul
But you say that you're gonna give it back

Baby, I love you, baby

Here's a very, very jammy live version, replete with delights percussive and otherwise.
