Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

I had fun today. I got fitted for a crown, and the sadistic basterds played both kinds of music- Country and Western.

The plumber I used last week came with a bluetooth speaker and his own special country and western playlist. Know what? It all sounded fine to me.

The standout was Midland. Humor in music ftw.
I like a lot of country music, but this crap was very bad. It was all "i'm the man and I'll look after you just lie back and we'll take our time" bullhockey. It was objectionable.

@Hawks64 @krista4 FYI Doc Oc's idiot who took a Who song picked Baba O'Riley, not Gettin' in Tune -- though it's nice to hear the latter since it wasn't picked and Baba was a squillion times.
That’s my fault. When I put together our playlists I didn’t want the same song twice so if some one selected a song previously selected I’d put another song by that artists on the playlist. Doug did selected Baba O’Riley #1 but since it was already on the playlist from some one else. we went with “I’m In Tune”. I forgot about that when I sent my list of guys 1 and 2 songs to hawks - but remembered when I actually listed them in the thread.

Duffy’s Mercy is one that I thought of after submitting, but would have been in consideration. Sad what happened to her, and the music robbed of.

Duffy's breakthrough came in the same year as Adele's 19.

If you had asked me which one would be a megastar 15 years later, I probably would have gone with Duffy because she was more of a conventional beauty. Fame can be a funny thing.
Duffy’s story is a bit sadder, unfortunately. She essentially left music after this.

The non-Brit/non-US countdown is going to be epic.
Just stick with Canadians and you'll be okay.
Well that includes Triumph so I'll be okay.
I have the recent Triumph documentary on the DVR - looking forward to it.
Where would I find this documentary?
It’s been airing on AXS TV. Dunno if it’s elsewhere. It’s called Rock and Roll Machine.

Produced by Sam Dunn, who was behind the documentary "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" a number of years ago, and a bunch of other band documentaries (Rush, Maiden, ZZ Top, et. al.)

@Raging weasel - THIS is one of my favorite sites, and I think they might have an app for phones too. This doc looks like it's just available to rent for $4. Just search any movie title and it will show where it might be streaming. You can also search or click on actors/directors and just see where their stuff is streaming.

What a ride. Thanks to @krista4 and everyone involved in putting this together. I feel like I should have something profound to say about it all but I'm coming up short. The most prominent thought in my mind is "What am I supposed to do now!?"
I knew this feeling was coming, so that's why I stopped doing my artist deep dives during the draft of artists I need to explore more because of this adventure.

My list got fairly long: Blur, Stone Roses, Deep Purple, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Jesus and Mary Chain, Gomez, Doves, Wire, Van Morrison, P.Gabriel/Genesis, and surprise........ Elton John.

And because of OH, I guess there is some Black Midi thingy I should give a listen to.

Between the bottom of this list and the bottom of the other one, we can perhaps deduce who my least favorite British band might be.

Ouch, none of my picks in the Pip's top 50.
I'd say maybe that means you only like short songs, but we know that's not the case.
Lol, yeah that would take Opeth out and their allergy to songs that are less than 10mins long. ;)

I just found it interesting because off the top of my head I would say many of yours made it on to my playlist, but that is different - mine is more "new to me" and your list is of your established favorites.

Yeah, a "new to me" ranking would probably look very different. I would like to make a "favorite new to me" playlist from this countdown and the US one, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I knew if I didn't do most of it while we went along, I wouldn't get to it. I am not sure I will add any from playlist #1, but I have 82 songs in mine right now.

Yes, we all joked about how concentrated this draft was around several artists, but I found that to be a good thing in the end. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety we got of the musical output from the bands that soaked up the top 10 points. I think it's safe to say that if you listened to all the playlists and STILL didn't get a song from those artists you like, they are not for you. The musicianship was on display for those groups and I felt they all had a variety of songs and it's hard to not like at least a song or two from them.

I don't have an exhaustive knowledge, but I love "Caught By The River". WRNR (RIP, as of last week) in Annapolis turned me onto it. It reminds me of another song, but I can't place it. Anyway, love the guitar sound and the vocal melody.

I had twelve songs nobody else selected, only one of which (Changes by David Bowie) was a surprise. Yet due to the fact that my list included 6 of the group's top ten (Gimme Shelter, Into the Mystic, Comfortably Numb, A Day in the Life, Solsbury Hill and Waterloo Sunset), I ended up as the third chalkiest.

I am surprised nobody selected Something in the Air, by Thunderclap Newman. I happened to hear the Tom Petty version on Sirius XM right at the start of the countdown and wished that I had remembered to include it on my list.

I had it in my first 5 out, so I guess you don't read my posts. @krista4 I feel you.
Sounds like the revolution's here.

"Chap" is actually my friend's real last name - he's polish not British though (think it was actually spelled "Csap" at sometime during his family history).
That would be Hungarian.
I’ll let him know he’s Hungarian and not Polish. He’s lived his 54 years as a lie.
Surnames in Eastern Europe make the rounds. It's very common to find Czech, Hungarian, German, Polish, etc. surnames in any of those countries. All the more since parts of those countries were all part of one nation for centuries leading up to WWI: the Habsburg branch of the Holy Roman Empire, then the Austrian Empire, then Austro-Hungarian Empire.

You friend Chap might know all what's in the following Ancestry.com links ... but he might find them interesting reading all the same:

Either way he seems eligible for the next countdown.

Paul Young covered "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on his first album. It's a great song so Young's version isn't terrible but I wouldn't call it essential either

My favorite version are by the British folk artists Oysterband and June Tabor:

This actually came very close to making my list of 31.

Zoe - I Want You which I can't find anywhere? it was pretty cool.

Could it have been Sophie B. Hawkins?

No, and this sounds like a version of the Dylan song, not the Beatles one?

Now it's going to drive me crazy that I can't find this. Sounded dancy, more along the lines of something ditka would take. It was interesting and enjoyable.

Thank you!!

Just catching up on last night's posts. We went to have dinner in the bar last night and found that it was trivia night, so we ended up eating and drinking for longer than expected. The good news is we came in third and were given a bag of crap! I was happy with our showing because there were a ton of teams, most of them with 6-8 people, and it was just the two of us. Most difficult trivia night I've ever been to, though, almost to the point of being unfun.

He may have. I wonder who his ancestors are. Alas, with all the wars in Europe, it's not always possible to find out.

I fixed this now.
