Gimme 3 bands... (1 Viewer)

I think most here have heard of Night Ranger. Especially because of the song Sister Christian being in Boogie Nights. That song was on their second record which was called Midnight Madness if I remember right.

Night Rangers first record, called Dawn Patrol, came out in late 1982, and was one of the first records I owned as a kid. Dawn Patrol is a super underrated, but really great record from start till finish.

If you give Dawn Patrol a chance, you will hear a bunch of different styles and influences jammed together. This record was like someone put five? random alpha artists in a room, and said go make a record. Actually, that might be what happened. To me, the finished product sounds like all of the guys thought that THEY were the band leader. Each song is a mix of different sounds from different genre.

You may also notice the tunes were pretty long for the time. Dawn Patrol was kinda proggy, but not really. Someone in the band with influence on the mix surely was into prog and it crossed over imo. The pacing was all over the place here and I loved it. Dawn Patrol had nice vocals, a beautiful piano sound, lots of proggy synth, guitars for days, and its super heavy when it gets there.

The extended lead guitar solo's on Dawn Patrol predated Van Halen's 1984. You should notice that the solo's on both the records are very similar in style and class. Who robbed who? Both are great, so who cares I guess. Anyway, check out this crazy record again if you know it. It was my favorite as a kid.

Their 3 album run of Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness, and Seven Wishes was fantastic and live this band still…..still brings it with 3 of the 5 original members (Jack Blades, Kelly Keagy and Brad Gillis) still going strong!

I had no idea. Dawn Patrol crushes the other two in my house (for the reasons I mentioned), but all are vg records.

Call My Name>>>>Sister Christian
Don't @me. 😉

@Todem did one of these guys play with Ozzy? I have heard this guitar work on Speak of the Devil or Bark at the Moon I am almost sure? So Familiar all of a sudden. Tia.

Armored Saint

Savatage

U.F.O.
Another great list. Savatage was great if you liked hard rock. The guitar player was incredible and as underrated as the band. Unfortunately, his brother was the front man and was not pretty enough for the scene and likely some of the reason the band didn’t hit it big.

I believe Savatage eventually morphed into the most popular Christmas band of all time

Brad Gillis played with Ozzy on the Speak of the Devil Tour/Album.

The great Jake E Lee played and wrote everything on Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin.

Check out Jake’s post Ozzy band Badlands. Great album of good ol fashioned hard blues driven rock!! Released in 1989.

Badlands holds up better than most bands from that era due to that blues sound. And Jake E Lee was a beast.

Yes. Savatage definitely morphed from album to album which ended up being the foundation of TSO. TSO was fun at the beginning but doesn’t do much for me now. I will give an album or two a listen in December but that’s it.

Badlands recordings hard to get a hold of as all were confiscated cuz their singer Ray Gillen was a very bad man as I recall

They're pretty big now, no?

almost didn't put them but I'm guessing they sold less records than Darby? Could be wrong. Pumped up Kicks their only true "hit" even though I think they have several other songs just as good and maybe even better.

Zebra - Were big in New Orleans and the NY metro area and had some minor hits in the 80's, but never really broke through.
Y&T - 70's rock band that morphed into hair metal, and has been plugging away for years.
Slade - Big in the UK/Europe, but not so much in the US. Quiet Riot put them on the map when they covered *** on feel the noiz. Slade's version is better.

Super love Slade.

They had a “World Premier Video” on MTV for the first single on their second album, after their big debut album. So while it was very short lived they did break through, just couldn’t sustain it.

Low - 25 year history and a very deep catalog. RIP Mimi Parker.

Sky Cries Mary - Seattle psychedelic rock group from the early '90's.

Damian Jurado - Singer, songwriter. Amazingly soulful, beautiful writing, and voice.

Material Issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjnNERIy0HI

A bad combination of not getting a big break and bad timing. They were a hooky, jangly band in the late 80's out of Chicago when no one was looking at Chicago for anything.

When Chicago became a musical focus in the 90's it was for the sound of the "Smashing Pumpkins", Liz Phair and "Veruca Salt", a total contrast to the sound of "Material Issue".

Oh, wow- had no idea til you wrote this.

Great call.

I have a Low shirt. It's the skeleton of a tree. Very cool, if I may so myself. It's a bit worn, with holes from a stud leather belt that is coming undone a bit in places.

But that's neither here nor there. Just a little background. What a shame she passed on. RIP.
Yeah, they are an amazing band which never made it in terms of commercial success. That probably contributed to their creativity overall, as well as uniqueness. I hope Alan learns to live without his longtime partner .

Same here. Godspeed to him.

Been revisiting the Super Furry Animals discography recently. Kind of rode below the surface of the late 90's/early 2000's britpop wave stateside. Great vocalist, great musicians, quirky and weird. Never really had a "hit" but all their albums are solid.

XTC - were moderately popular for a while and had a few minor hits here in America, but should have been a lot bigger (not being able to tour during most of their peak due to Andy Partridge's stage fright didn't help)
*check out their albums Black Sea and English Settlement

Porcupine Tree - awesome art rock band of the last 30 years, one that has a big underground following, but mainstream success has eluded them
*check out their albums Stupid Dream or In Absentia (great starters)

Huge huge PT and Steven Wilson fan.

He has done quite well and the band did as well. Not internationally superstars but they are the definition of excellence in modern day Progressive rock.

Steven Wilsons new solo record just released as well and it is magnificent. A sonic wonder.

So I will throw out three bands here from the early to mid 90’s.

Candlebox - Yeah the debut was a multi platinum success and they opened for Rush in 1993. However check out Happy Pills and Into The Sun. Both those albums are masterpieces of great rock music with prog overtones. Just awesome.

Virgos Merlot - one album only back in 1999. And that album is a sizzling beast of a record. Not one, not two but three guitarists. Seriously great vocals and front to back not a weak track. They faded away after just one record. I saw them open for Fuel at a club and they simply tore it up.

Jellyfish - two great albums of Beatles infused music. Seriously one of the most overlooked bands of the early 90’s. A 180 from the “grunge” scene that dominated the early and mid 90’s. Highly recommended for people who love vocal driven music with a ton of pop sensibility and great playing.

Lamont Cranston Band -formed in 1969 in the Twin Cities, this blues band is still kicking. They were gaining notice in the 70's and were scheduled to be on SNL but The Blues Brothers became so popular they never got to perform on SNL.

The Band Perry - actually had some great success early with a #1 song "If I Die Young". They decided to go "pursue some creative interests" and their popularity dropped like a falling knife. Kimberly Perry is trying to restart her career in country music this year with a re-release of "If I Die Young".
