Glen Coffee MIA since Thursday morning... (1 Viewer)

I heard a linebacker laid him out during practice on what was supposed to be a "no contact" drill. I wonder if there is a connection.

While Rotoworld's news blurb is saying "Dixon is now the clear "handcuff" to Gore," according to Mike Singletary via Barrows' tweet "Michael Robinson now becomes the No. 2 runner. Singletary says rookie Dixon is "a ways away" from being an NFL runner."

I think I'd invest in Robinson before Dixon right now if I were a Gore owner (redraft), but Dixon would be my pick in a dynasty startup...

49ers backup RB Glen Coffee shockingly announced his retirement from football Friday.

Coffee was nowhere to be found Friday after missing Thursday afternoon's practice. He released a statement Friday afternoon, indicating that he's "moving on" from football. Coach Mike Singletary runs a notoriously tough camp, but there has to be more to the story here. Coffee was battling rookie Anthony Dixon for the No. 2 job behind Frank Gore. Dixon is now the clear "handcuff" to Gore.

Frankly, he wasn't very good anyway.

It's kind of puzzling that he would retire though because he has seemed very motivated since joining the Niners.

With this news, I move Gore even further up my boards (if that is even possible at this point)

With the absence of his primary backup from last season, and the coach seemingly uninspired by Dixon, I think the Niners will have no choice but to ride Gore even more than they were planning to.

Absent injury, I see a top-4 season from Gore now, beating out Ray Rice for 2010.

Agreed, he is at least as talented, probably more so than Rice. Now Gore doesnt have any competition and Rice has plenty, particularly at the goalline. The Ravens have a better Oline, but the gap is not neary big enough to offset the advantages Gore has over Rice. Anyone taking Rice over Gore in Redrafts is too hung up on age.

I agree but it also makes me a bit more leery of Gore making it through the season. I just don't think they can ride him as hard as they have been without some help and I think now they may look at what they have and say "MEH! Just leave Frank in there!"Ok Football gods, do your thing! Send Lynch back to Cali!!

Wow, I remember Coffee being a great back at Bama. I had him pegged as a guy that would enjoy a nice long career as a backup. Talent-wise I've always considered him better than some of the backups in this league.

Apparently Coffee is Favre's illigentiment kid --- Interesting.

Westbrook is going to San Fran now no doubt in my mind.

That's the first thought that crossed my mind as well.I'm sure the Bills are still demanding a 2nd rounder though and the 49ers are comfortable with MRob. If something were to happen to Gore, I think they wouldn't hesitate to offer a deal to Buffalo for Lynch.

I'm guessing there is something we don't know, like a positive drug test or something.
Glen Coffee-RB- 49ers Aug. 13 - 3:41 pm etIan Rapoport of the Boston Herald, who covered Glen Coffee at Alabama, believes Coffee is retiring to pursue the priesthood.

"Having covered 49ers RB Glen Coffee for 3 years, not surprised he retired," tweeted Rapoport on Friday. "He has a higher call. Wouldn't shock me if he headed to ministry." The 49ers retain Coffee's rights, but it sounds like his retirement is for good. He'll remain under contract through 2012.

So when and where do I look for NFL-official confirmation of this??? I can drop him penalty-free in my dynasty if he retires...and if that was in the next 36 hours, that would be nice....

Gore handcuff update, per Singletary:(Rotoworld)

Anthony Dixon-RB- 49ers Aug. 13 - 4:26 pm et Updating a previous item, coach Mike Singletary confirmed that rookie Anthony Dixon will "step into" the primary backup role with Glen Coffee's unexpectedly retiring."He and Coffee were competing to see who that backup guy was going to be," said Singletary. "And right now, it really forces Dixon to grow up really quick. It's one of those things where he is going to take more snaps; he's going to get more of the workload." Frank Gore owners looking for a "handcuff" should target Dixon, not Michael Robinson. If Gore misses time, Dixon will receive the bulk of the workload.Related: Frank Gore, Michael Robinson

You're right. He should have continued doing something to make others happy instead of pursuing what made him happy. Maybe do it until he's crippled at the age of 40.

But then he could heal himself ...

I think he is a moron if in two years, he has another "change of heart." Outside of that the smart thing to do is to walk away before he gets seriously injuried or causes someone else to get injured. Anyway, he is going to have a tough time coming back because there are plenty of teams who won't touch him for quitting and he was blah at best in the regular season.

Isn't doing good for others what Christianity is all about?

NFL football is my favorite sport to watch, but it would be the last sport I would choose to play. It is a brutal game.
