GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (10 Viewers)

It's been a minute since I've had anything positive to say about My Idiot Son (aka The Boy), but here it is.

After flaming out of welding school this past spring, we begged him to DO SOMETHING. ANYTHING. We sent him all sorts of job posts from around the country that would be more adventure-type jobs. He said no to everything. Wouldn't even try. His self-confidence is shot after a few very difficult years on a lot of different levels. We tried to explain that the upside to your life being a dumpster fire is that you can just leave and go on an adventure, unlike those jerk-face college types with all their commitments.

So out of the blue three weeks ago, he tells us he's applied for a job that he found online and already has a Zoom interview that night.

What for, we ask.

To work on a dude ranch in Wyoming for the summer.

Um, what? I mean, um, what!!!!

So he has an interview that night. They have some type of emergency situation where someone backed out last minute. Their season was starting in a few days. So they offer him the job that very night, and he was on a plane to Jackson Hole about 36 hours later.

Pretty huge leap of faith for him. He's afraid of everything (without admitting that). The only time he's ever been gone for an extended period of time was a short week on a camping trip the summer before senior year of high school.

So this is huge, and right up his alley. He basically wants to be a cowboy.

It sounds like Below Deck for dude ranches. It's very high-end, and these groups of 35 come in a week at a time, one after another for the whole summer.

So he's two-and-a-half weeks in at this point and absolutely loving it. Cooking meals on overnight trail rides in the mountains, learning to fly fish, riding horses and herding cattle. All while getting paid and getting free room and board right on the ranch in his own cabin.

There are 24 staff members, almost all are his age. 21 of them are young ladies. (editor's note: Amazon allows you to overnight condoms anywhere in the country.)

He'll be gone until the end of August. Our basement will have probably recovered fully by then.

So, who knows how this will affect him. Maybe he'll stay out there forever. Maybe it will lead to some opportunity.

All we really want at this point is for him to have fun and feel good about himself for a change. Anything else is gravy.

Congrats. That's awesome. I know that exact feeling of just wanting your kids to find something they enjoy that's good and meaningful. Sounds like that'll be a great experience for him. It'll be a little like I remember being a lifeguard - Yes, you're working but you get paid to do something where mostly what the people next to you are paying a bunch of money to do.

And also, this would make a great thread for the whole FFA. I bet lots of people can relate to this as a specific thread.

That’s awesome! My step dad went to a dude ranch in WY as a kid 65 odd years ago

Holiday weekend not off to the best start. Hit the snooze button (thankfully) and started to realize my wife was having a seizure. First time that we know of. She was in bed so thankfully that helped keep her safe. It went on for quite a while so I ended up calling 911 and paramedics came out. She was starting to recover by then (though still out of it quite a bit and couldn’t answer some basic questions) and her vitals were stabilized.

So we elected to wait to call her neurologist she sees for her MS to see if we could get seen there. Annoyed with them as they never called me back and I had to follow-up after an hour. Where they then informed me that since it was her first seizure they wouldn’t see her anyway and we needed to the ER anyway. Fun.

So now we’re in a room at the ER. Getting all sorts of tests to check things out.

Some definite things I’m thankful for though in it all. Thankful I hit snooze and it happened while I was right next to her to see it and do something. Thankful that it turns out that I’m pretty good under those circumstances and was able to react calmly and effectively. Thankful that she was able to stabilize so quickly. Definitely thankful it was today and not tomorrow since my daughter is flying out with our church youth group at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Would have been a total disaster if this happened and either made it impossible for my daughter to go or sent her off with anxiety through the roof.

So now we just sit and wait for bloodwork, tests for RSV/Covid/Strep (because she has a sore throat), x-rays, CT Scan and maybe MRI.

Also thankful this happened this morning because I imagine by tonight through tomorrow there will be a full ER due to 4th of July activity related injuries.

That’s so awesome. Maybe he finds something in it and opens up some sort of career path. If nothing else, sounds like it might be restoring some confidence and making him feel like he has some purpose while also helping him feel independent.

Thanks guys. Right now my money is on low blood sugar/diabetes and/or dehydration. She eats mostly sugar/carbs and only drinks Coke. Something we’ve argued about for years. Half decent chance it caught up to her leading to low blood sugar and dehydration coupled with being pretty warm and wala.

Fan-freaking-tastic!!!

How cool, just like City Slickers!

RUM RAISIN!!!

A banner day yesterday up here in northern Wisconsin.

19 year old caught his first muskie - a nice 40” lake fish. He was fishing with my 17 year old. They go out to lunch since the older boy had to meet his girlfriend later. So the 17 year old went back to the same lake and nailed another 40 incher. His 5th ski.

A hell of a day for this proud papa.

Rode in an autonomous Uber for the first time last week in Tempe. I think because I had 5-6 beers in me I was feeling more adventurous and less anxiety-ridden than normal. Had I been completely sober I think I may have freaked out a bit, if not canceled the ride altogether.

E2A: It was a fairly short ride, maybe 2.5 miles? There was hardly any traffic going back from downtown Tempe to my hotel. I did notice it changed lanes without signaling once, but human drivers do this all the time, so.... not sure if that's a ding on it or not.

With doctor’s permission, Mrs. GD and I went i Annapolis MD this weekend for a quick July 4th getaway while our daughter was on her trip. Had a nice time there.

Have to say, if you ever go, I highly recommend Vin 909 for a meal. One of the best meals I’ve had in a while. The pizzas were fantastic, but we also had a burrata dish with sesame syrup, hibiscus pearls, and sesame crostini that was outstanding. Also tried their side of beets which was really unique and delicious. Prices were really reasonable for the level of food they put out too.

Boatyard had good food too. Though the crab cake sandwich was merely “good”. The crab and artichoke dip appetizer really was fantastic though.

Annapolis Ice Cream Company however was disappointing. Advertise themselves as winners of “Best Of every year since 2004” but the ice cream was Icy and the flavors mediocre IMO. Storm Bros was much better.

And yeah, my vacations tend to revolve around food…

Glad the Mrs is back to vacation mode. Great recovery there. And I think ALL vacations should involve food as it is very relatable. Now craving crab and artichoke dip.

5th!!! I can't tell you how many times I've muskie fished and to this day I've still never caught one. I did have one bite a walleye i had on a stringer in half once. It was like jaws trying to flip the boat over.

Congrats to to them both.

Contained. Really good job by the firefighters
Glad it was xontained so quickly.

**ALERT- POORLY TIMED INAPPROPRIATE "JOKE" COMMENT INCOMING**....
Still waiting on permits for that Emerald Bay project, but otherwise would have saved us some money and time on demo.
Sorry. :bag:
DM me if you need some help with those permits. I've worked in and around permit expediting in Orange County for nearly 30 years. :)

Jiminy Christmas, man... NOW you tell me.

The real issue is our CA architect of record went completely and utterly ****ing AWOL. Told us typically takes 4mo to a year, so we were expecting long leadtime on permits.

He Filed in Aug, which got kicked back to him for missing coastal dev application, as well as solar (he never bothered telling us solar was a requirement!). I think that was in Oct. But we didnt know, because he never told us! So we we're waiting, following up with him- BUPKIS.

Our GC reached out to the county in Feb and finds this info out. Doesn't tell us until April! I scramble to do the coastal app...send it to jabronie CA architect...who goes freaking AWOL again!! Our GC had to literally chase him down and get him back on board.

Thats finally all submitted and the county is FINALLY reviewing our drawing set.

Tl;dr... Can you please go murder our local architect. Tia.

It took us a year to get approval from Emerald Bay design review. That alone is insane.

We have another project in Ojai, so i saw how long permitting takes and was expecting it.

I wasn't expecting our local architect to drop the ball this badly. Nice guy. Highly recommended by the GC. Just up and went *poof* not once but twice. First time, i didnt even know he was awol- just assumed we were on course for a normally long filing

I wasn't expecting our local architect to drop the ball this badly. Nice guy. Highly recommended by the GC. Just up and went *poof* not once but twice. First time, i didnt even know he was awol- just assumed we were on course for a normally long filing
I know a guy if you need a replacement. He drinks a staggering amount scotch.
Is it me?

I typically look for Marriott properties for my work travel. I like accumulating the points and in the cities I'm typically staying in, Courtyard by Marriott is usually the nicest option. But there are times where I find a more "boutique" type of hotel that's nice for a change of pace. There's one in Fargo, ND, which is awesome that I've stayed at a couple times. And I found one here in dusty Bakersfield, CA. It's "downtown" (for as much "downtown" as Bakersfield has), so walking distance to a couple of eateries and place to grab a cocktail. Well, it turns out a friend of mine stayed at this place earlier this year and found out that it's haunted as heck.

I am ultra-sensitive to the paranormal, so I definitely felt it just coming into the lobby yesterday. Turns out my room is on the floor where a ton of stuff happens. I slept fine last night; nothing weird's happened (yet).

In case you're curious....
